Worked Example — 1987–88 in the Rāśi Chart

The teacher's own chart: Lagna Virgo, Moon Aquarius, Sun Pisces.

The year. In 1987 he stood first in the state in Intermediate and entered IIT Madras. From 5 April 1987 the 18th year was running: 18 − 12 = 6th house.

• 6th from Lagna = Aquarius; 6th from Moon = Cancer; 6th from Sun = Leo.

Entry chart of the year (rāśi): Sun, Jupiter, Rahu in Pisces; Mercury, Venus in Aquarius; Mars in Taurus; Moon in Gemini (śukla pakṣa); Saturn in Scorpio; Ketu in Virgo.

The rāśi chart shows the physical domain.

Surya chakra — from Leo

5 against 4. For opportunities to do what the soul wants, a moderately good year. Nothing stands out.

Chandra chakra — from Cancer

6 against 3. He felt very good and excited that year.

Lagna chakra — from Aquarius

• Venus, Mercury in the 1st: good, good.
• Jupiter and Sun in the 2nd: good, good (the 2nd is good for benefics). Rahu in the 2nd: bad.
• Mars in the 4th: bad. Moon in the 5th, śukla pakṣa: good.
• Ketu (8th) and Saturn (10th): bad.

5 against 4. His own actions in society that year: moderately good, nothing outstanding.

"From the point of view of my doing things in the society, my influencing other people, nothing really stands out. It is moderately good. But based on how I feel, it is quite good. It is 6 versus 3."

The month he joined IIT — rāśi antardaśā, 7 July – 7 August 1987

• Rāśi antardaśā signs: Cancer (Lagna chakra), Taurus (Chandra chakra), Gemini (Surya chakra). The Chandra-chakra one, for example: daśā sign Cancer, lord Moon in Aquarius, so the antardaśās start from Aquarius and the 4th month is Taurus.
• For the mind take Taurus in the month's entry chart:

4.5 against 4.5 — just average. A month of adjusting to a new state and two new spoken languages: Tamil outside the institute, English inside. He had studied in Telugu medium up to the 10th standard and was not fluent in English. Yet he was happy to have got in. The month before had been a good one.

Divisional Charts in Sudarshana Chakra Dasha — D-24 in 1987–88

Can the daśā be used in divisional charts?

A student asked. Parāśara neither grants it nor denies it; he only says Lagna, Sun and Moon are essential, first house first year. The teacher's view:

"If divisional charts are separate charts, if they can be analyzed as separate charts, then why can't we make the dashas in those charts? Even though it is not explicitly mentioned anywhere, it is my view that you can take the Sudarshana Chakra Dasha in various divisional charts also, and use the same rules that Parashara taught."

• Find the daśā signs from Lagna, Moon and Sun of that divisional chart.
• Read the entry chart in that same divisional chart.
• His advice at the end: look at the rāśi, but the relevant divisional chart matters even more — D-24 (Siddhāṁśa) for learning.
• The divisional lagna is sensitive to birth time. Moon and Sun are much less so, so "how I feel" and "what opportunities I get" can still be read when the time is uncertain.

D-24, 1987–88: daśā signs

• Natal D-24: Lagna and Moon both in Gemini, Sun in Scorpio. With Lagna and Moon together the Lagna and Chandra chakras are identical — two analyses, not three.
• 6th from Gemini = Scorpio (Lagna and Chandra chakras). 6th from Scorpio = Aries (Surya chakra).

Surya chakra — from Aries

• Saturn in the 1st: bad. Jupiter in the 3rd: bad. Venus in the 4th: good. Rahu, Ketu in the 6th: good, good.
• Sun, Moon, Mars in the 8th: Sun (friend's house) and Moon (śukla pakṣa) are benefics in the 8th — good, good. Mars — bad.
• Mercury in the 12th: neutral.

5.5 against 3.5. An above-average year for getting the learning the soul wants. Not a glorious one.

Lagna and Chandra chakras — from Scorpio

8 against 1.

• Even the one bad planet is bad only by thumb rule. From Scorpio, Mars is the 1st lord, Moon the 9th lord, Sun the 10th lord. The three are mutual friends and sit together in the daśā sign: a Rāja Yoga of the 1st, 9th and 10th lords in the 1st house.
• Trilochana Yoga: Sun, Moon and Mars in mutual trines (here, together). Trilochana is the three-eyed one, Shiva. The yoga makes one a conqueror of enemies; it is good for victory and overcoming opposition.
• As far as the mind and learning go: "I feel like I have conquered the world" — on cloud nine the whole year, on getting state first and entering IIT.
• The same count from Lagna: he adapts well to the new learning environment and does well in it. D-24 is the learning environment.

The same planets in the natal D-24

• Natal D-24 (Gemini lagna): Moon in Lagna — name and fame in general. Mars, the 6th lord, is in the 12th (Taurus). Sun, the 3rd lord, is in the 6th (Scorpio). Two duḥsthāna lords in duḥsthānas, aspecting each other (graha dṛṣṭi, mutual 7th): a Viparīta Rāja Yoga.
• Both are tied to the 6th house — one its lord, the other its occupant.
• In the 1987 entry chart the same Sun and Mars give a Rāja Yoga, and in the same sign, Scorpio.
• Malefics tied to the 6th house in a chart of learning: overcoming opposition and doing better than rivals. A year of success in competition.

"Count is for intellectual pygmies. If you believe that you are not an intellectual pygmy, you can do the next level analysis."

D-24 antardaśā — the first month at IIT, 7 July – 7 August 1987

• Scorpio and Aries are both ruled by Mars, and Mars is in Taurus in the natal D-24. So all three chakras start their antardaśās from Taurus and run the same antardaśā sign.
• 7 July – 7 August is the 4th month: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo.

"When you are talking about big periods, there may be a lot of deviation between soul, mind and body. But when you are talking about smaller periods, they are all basically going with the same flow. If not at the antardasha level, then at the next level or the next, eventually there will be some convergence."

• Even with one sign, three readings can be given — opportunities, conduct, feelings. They will be alike.
• Month's entry chart in D-24, from Leo: Mercury in the 1st good; Jupiter (3rd) bad; Sun, Mars, Saturn together — Sun good, Mars and Saturn bad; Venus good; Moon good; Rahu and Ketu bad. 4 against 5.
• Slightly negative. This was not the month of the distinction. It was the month he reached IIT: a strange place, misgivings about the choice of institute and branch, discomfort with English. In the first month an institute teaches almost nothing new; it recapitulates.

"From the point of view of learning, I am not really learning anything important or exciting, and also I am feeling a little uncomfortable because of the newness factor."

• D-24 speaks strictly of the learning environment. The rāśi chart of the same month (Part 6) shows the overall physical existence. He could be glad at the physical level to have reached IIT and still be uneasy about the learning. If the rāśi chart were bad too, other problems would be read.

Marriage, 1 August 1993 — D-9

Marriage is read in the Navāṁśa. Natal D-9: Lagna Taurus, Moon Gemini, Sun Capricorn.

• 1993–94 is the 24th year: 12th house. D-9 daśā signs: Aries (Lagna chakra), Taurus (Chandra chakra), Sagittarius (Surya chakra).

Surya chakra — from Sagittarius

5.5 against 3.5. An above-average chance of an opportunity in the dharmic field the soul desires.

• Ketu, as a benefic in the 8th, gives a sudden marriage.

"I wasn't sure if I was going to get married that year. It more or less happened quite suddenly, and that could be ascribed to Ketu in the 8th house."

Which planets matter for marriage in the natal D-9

A student asked whether the planet that stood out for the 7th house shows up here. So the 7th house is examined from all three references in the natal D-9:

• Mars is the key planet: in the 7th from Moon and 7th lord from Lagna.
• In the entry chart from Sagittarius, Mars is in the 6th — one of the good planets.
• Jupiter (1st and 4th lord from Sagittarius) and Mars (5th lord) are together: a Rāja Yoga, and it involves the key natal planet.
• Moon, 7th lord from the natal Sun, is well placed. Ketu, the other 7th lord from Lagna, is well placed.
• Only Jupiter, 7th lord from Moon, is badly placed despite his yoga: some sluggishness about getting married.

Chandra chakra — from Taurus

• Jupiter in the 1st: good. Mars in the 1st: bad — a malefic in the 1st is plainly bad.
• Ketu in the 3rd: a student pointed out that Ketu was being taken as a benefic here, so in the 3rd he is bad.
• Moon (5th), Saturn (6th), Venus (7th): good. Sun and Rahu (9th): bad. Mercury (12th): neutral.

4.5 against 4.5.

"During this year I may get married, but I am not too excited about it. 'Do you want me to get married? Okay, I will get married' kind of thing. Don't tell my wife."

Lagna chakra — from Aries

• Mercury (1st) good; Jupiter (2nd) good; Mars (2nd) bad; Ketu (4th) good; Moon (6th) bad; Saturn (7th) bad; Venus (8th) good; Sun and Rahu (10th) bad.

4 against 5. Not a year for good proactive decisions in dharma.

"The decision of getting married was not mine. My father said, why don't you get married? And I got married."

Read together: from Sun, an above-average chance of something happening in marriage; from Moon, he marries without much excitement; from Lagna, it is not his own initiative.

Beyond Counting — Key Planets and Repeating Yogas

"Apart from counting scores like a trader — 5.5 versus 3.5, 5 versus 4 — you have to see the quality also. It is not a pure democracy. Not all planets are equal."

1. Find the key planets in the natal chart (of the same varga) for the matter in question: owner, occupants and aspectors of the house from Lagna, Moon and Sun, and the planet common to them.
2. See how those planets are placed in the entry chart from the daśā sign. A planet badly placed by thumb rule matters little if it is not a key planet. A key planet well placed matters a lot.
3. Look for yogas from the daśā sign in the entry chart.
4. See what the planets giving those yogas stand for in the natal chart. When the same planets give a yoga in the natal chart and in the entry chart, that agenda comes up in that period.
5. When two lagnas coincide, give that sign much importance. Body and mind are together, and its list is already the intersection of two lists.

• The count is a good starting point. Go to the next level in any case.
• The teacher uses only Parāśara's classical principles here — not the Tājika yogas. He fishes out the yogas from the daśā sign and checks whether those planets stand for something in the natal chart.
• It is often hard to say exactly what will happen. One can at least say the period is good for that area of life.

Starting the Astrology Classes, 2004 — D-24

The classes began on 5 May 2004, in the greater Boston area. Year April 2004 – April 2005, the 35th: 11th house. D-24 daśā signs: Aries (Lagna and Chandra chakras), Virgo (Surya chakra).

Surya chakra — from Virgo

• Jupiter in the 1st: good. Moon in the 2nd: good.
• Rahu, Ketu in the 3rd: good, good. Sun in the 3rd: in a friendly house he is a benefic, and a benefic in the 3rd is bad.
• Venus in the 4th: good. Mercury (6th): bad. Saturn and Mars in the 10th: bad, bad.

5 against 4. Just above average for long-term opportunity in the learning field.

Who stands out among the good planets?

• Jupiter in the 1st — a trine — in a Mercury sign where he is happy. Jupiter is very powerful for learning.
• Ketu in the 3rd in his own sign Scorpio, a malefic sign: a great deal of initiative.
• Moon in the 2nd is only fair. Venus in the 4th is in an inimical house and not strong.

What Jupiter and Ketu stand for in the natal D-24:

• From the Surya lagna (Scorpio) they are tied to the 5th and 11th houses.
• From the combined Lagna and Chandra lagna (Gemini): Jupiter is in the 10th house (Pisces), and Rahu and Ketu (Virgo) aspect the 10th by rāśi dṛṣṭi. The 10th has the influence of Jupiter, Rahu and Ketu only.
• These planets show his karma in the learning field.

"If I write books, if I engage in arguments on the list, if I share whatever little I find based on what my gurus taught me, if I teach in a class, if the audio is available to other people — all this is mainly because of Jupiter in the 10th house. That is my karma relating to the learning environment."

• This is from the Surya chakra, so Ketu does not hand him initiative; Ketu places him in a situation where he has the opportunity to show it.

Lagna and Chandra chakras — from Aries

• Well placed: Saturn, Mars, Moon, Sun, Mercury. Badly placed: Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu.
• The teacher counts 5 well placed out of 9: a positive year too for what he does and feels in the learning field.

For anything meant to last, Surya chakra comes first

• When someone starts a thing that is to stand for a long time — a political party, a spiritual organization — look at that year's Sudarshana Chakra Dasha and give the Surya lagna more weight than Lagna and Moon.
• If the key natal planets are well placed from the progressed Surya lagna and give good yogas, what is begun that year is auspicious in the long run.
• A man may think "this is what I want to do" when it is not what his soul wants. Then it lasts a few years and goes away.

"Surya lagna shows what your soul desires, what your soul has set out to do. Whatever audio we are creating in this year and the coming couple of years will be beneficial to some people in the long run. My soul has some desire which is resulting in this. This is not something without a basis."

A Month in D-20 — 5 January to 3 February 1994

Spiritual life is read in the Viṁśāṁśa. Natal D-20: Lagna Taurus, Moon Cancer, Sun Virgo.

• 1993–94, 12th house: D-20 daśā signs Aries / Gemini / Leo.
• Antardaśā of this month (the 10th): Gemini (Lagna chakra), Pisces (Chandra chakra), Gemini (Surya chakra). For the Surya chakra: Leo's lord Sun is in Virgo, so the count starts at Virgo and the 10th is Gemini.

Entry chart of the month in D-20: Venus, Mars in Leo; Sun in Virgo; Mercury in Libra; Moon in Scorpio (kṛṣṇa pakṣa); Saturn in Aquarius; Jupiter in Pisces; Rahu, Ketu in Aries.

From Gemini — action and opportunity

6 against 3. The month stands out, both for his own actions in the spiritual field and for the opportunities given. Something important is to be expected.

Yogas from Gemini

• Venus + Mars — the 5th and 6th lords together, in the 3rd house: intelligence joined to the power to overcome obstacles, put into an initiative. The published class notes name it Dhīmantha Yoga.
• Saturn, 9th lord in the 9th: there is no name for it, but it is a great blessing. A strong 9th gives good guidance from within; the 9th is the internal guru and governs right decisions.
• Jupiter, 10th lord in the 10th: Hamsa Yoga. Extremely well placed.
• Sun aspecting Jupiter gives no yoga.

What these planets stand for in the natal D-20

Venus and Mars are together in the natal D-20 as well:

• From Lagna (Taurus): in the 5th house of bhakti; 1st and 7th lords together — Rāja Yoga.
• From Moon (Cancer): in the 3rd house of initiative; 4th and 5th lords together — Rāja Yoga.
• From Sun they are in the Surya lagna itself, but as 9th and 8th lords they give no yoga.
• The same pair gives a yoga in the month's chart. That is enough, even though Venus is badly placed from Gemini.

Saturn is the yogakāraka of the natal D-20, the 9th lord from Lagna. In the month's chart he is in his own sign in the 9th from the daśā sign.

"Your internal guru is giving you Saturn 9th house advice. That guidance will obviously not be to relax. It will be to work hard, to have discipline and struggle. That is what Saturn does."

Jupiter in the natal D-20, from the three references:

• The 4th, the 2nd and the 12th each come up twice. Occupation and ownership outweigh aspect, so the 4th house stands out: he occupies it from Moon and owns it from Sun.
• The 4th is mother, comfort and direction (gati). Śaṅkara: gatis tvaṁ gatis tvaṁ tvam ekā Bhavāni — Mother, you are my direction. Comfort comes from having a clear path.
• In the month's chart Jupiter in the 10th also aspects the 4th from the daśā sign.

"In the D20 chart, the 4th house will show the spiritual path, the spiritual direction that you have. It is the beginning of the Moksha Trikona. Having a good path is the beginning of your process of getting Moksha. That is the seed."

What happened

• Until then he did various pūjās and read the Lakshmi Ashtottaram once or twice now and then. In January 1994 the thought came suddenly: read it 108 times every Friday.
• The stotra has a line promising that an intelligent man who reads it every Friday for a year becomes like Kubera, with the eight aiśvaryas. He was 23 and that excited him. 108 seemed too long, so he tried it for one day to see how long it took, and then took it up for a year.
• The guidance from within was toward hard work — Saturn's kind.

"During that one year I understood that money doesn't really matter, and I was much more happy. I found direction in my life when I did it. I decided that I don't want to be Kubera, I don't want to be anybody, I just want to be myself. So I don't do it with a particular desire, I just do it."

• He had kept it up for eleven and a half years at the time of the class.
• His advice: if Venus is a good planet in your rāśi, Navāṁśa or Viṁśāṁśa, read the Lakshmi Ashtottaram on Fridays. If not 108 times, then 11, or 3, or even once.

The 12-Year Repeat — 1987 and 1999

In 1999–2000 the D-24 daśā was again Scorpio / Scorpio / Aries, exactly as in 1987–88.

• Both years were good for learning. The natal chart seen from Scorpio may hold something good that runs as an undercurrent. It is possible to read the natal placements from the daśā sign for such a basic pattern recurring with the 12-year cycle, something like a Jupiter cycle.
• The specific result comes from the entry chart. The planets in the sign differ, the yogas differ, so the results differ. In 1999 look at Sun in Scorpio — he is the bhrātṛkāraka in the teacher's chart, who shows the guru — and at where Jupiter is and what yogas form.
• One year may be excellent and the year 12 years later very bad in the same area of life. Or both may be good in different ways, through different activities.

"The yogas will be different, the planets will be different, so based on it the results will be different."

Hierarchy of Charts, Ashtakavarga and Sahamas

Correlate each level with the one above

In the January 1994 example the month's yogas were compared straight with the natal chart. The teacher corrects himself: the stricter method is level by level.

• Months come from years, and years from the natal chart.
• Correlate the annual chart with the natal chart, the monthly chart with the annual chart, the 2½-day chart with the monthly chart.

Ashtakavarga

• Parāśara says plainly that combining this daśā with Ashtakavarga gives very good predictions. Besides counting good and bad planets, look at the Ashtakavarga scores of the houses.
• Use the level above: the natal Ashtakavarga with the annual chart, the annual chart's Ashtakavarga with the monthly chart, and so on.
• Details are left to the next class.

Sahamas

A student asked how this works with the sahamas, which matter so much in Tājika charts.

• Parāśara did not mention sahamas when he taught the Sudarshana Chakra, so the teacher does not use them here. There may be a link, but there is no classical statement of one.

What the technique is good for

• Thumb rules give a yes-or-no tick for a year, a month, a week, a day, down to 2½ days.
• Finding the yogas and correlating them with the natal chart shows in which year, month or day a given planet gets to give its results.
