BPHS — 4th House (Continued): Specific Vehicle Timing Verses

The class resumes the 4th-house results chapter at the 10th sloka.

Verse 10: Vehicle in the 12th Year

Dvādaśe vatsare prāpte vāhanasya sukham — when the 12th year of life comes, there is happiness from a vehicle. The conditions, word by word:

• Lagna-sthānādhipe saumye — the lord of the sign holding lagna is a natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, a well-associated Mercury, a waxing Moon)
• Sukheśe nīca-rāśige — the 4th lord is in his sign of debilitation
• Kārake vyaya-bhāvasthe — the kāraka of vehicles, Venus, is in the 12th house
• Sukheśe lābha-saṅgate — the 4th lord has gone into the 11th house

Read together: the 4th lord must be debilitated in the 11th house. The teacher tests this lagna by lagna:

• The only case is Leo lagna with Ketu the stronger 4th lord, debilitated in Gemini — and Venus then sits in Cancer. But the lagna lord is then the Sun, who is not a natural benefic. The verse contradicts itself.
• Santhanam translates it as "4th lord in debility or in the 11th house". The teacher rejects that: there is no word for "or" in the verse. Parashara says vā when he means "or"; otherwise his conditions are joined by "and".
• Lābha-saṅgate means "gone into the 11th house". It cannot be stretched to "with the 11th lord" or "aspecting".
• A debilitated 4th lord giving an early vehicle makes no sense anyway. Debility is undesirable; the 4th lord in the 11th is not.

The teacher's verdict: either a genuine verse with one word corrupted, or a fake verse.

"It is possible that this is a verse from Parashara with some typo somewhere, one particular word gone wrong, or it is also possible that this is basically a fake verse."

He is skeptical of all such verses that name an exact year ("in the 10th year the mother dies"). He has seen no example that proves one. Someone may have padded the chapter. He could invent one from his own chart: lagna lord Mercury in the 8th with Venus, aspected by Jupiter — "in the 17th year he stands state first in the intermediate exams".

What does make sense — the 4th lord in the 11th house:

• Any planet in the 11th gives fulfilment of the desires of its house.
• The 11th is the 8th from the 4th. Taking the 4th as lagna, it is like the lagna lord in the 8th. The 8th shows sudden gains and inheritance, and the lord of a house only does good to his own house.

"Lord of any house will only do good to that house. Will not do harm. So you will expect the 4th lord to give sudden gains, unexpectedly getting a vehicle."

• So a vehicle very early in life is reasonable. Why the 12th year — that is not obvious.

A speculation — ucca instead of nīca: if the word were "exalted", one case works. Virgo lagna: the 4th lord Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, the 11th house. The lagna lord Mercury must then be alone or with benefics to count as a natural benefic.

Homework: find charts with a natural-benefic lagna lord, the 4th lord in the 11th or in debility, and Venus in the 12th; try both readings and bring any striking case to him.

Why these particular years? A student brings up the next verse, which names the 32nd year. The teacher: a good vehicle at 32, 35 or 40 is still a good endowment. The numbers 12, 32 and so on may come from the system in which different years of life are ruled by different planets.

What Counts as a Vehicle

A student asks whether a scooter counts or only a big vehicle.

• A vehicle is whatever you use as your conveyance — a bicycle, a scooter, a palanquin, a BMW, a helicopter.
• Because the verses describe rare, special combinations, a good vehicle is probably meant.
• Good and bad are subjective. For one man a motorcycle is better than a car.
• The verses speak of vāhana sukham — comfort from the vehicle — not of how grand a vehicle the person is seen to own. A man with only a motorcycle can feel like a king; a man with a Mercedes-Benz can be always complaining.

4th Lord with the 10th Lord, Exalted in an Amsa

"Karmeśena yute bandhunāthe tuṅgāṁśa-saṁyute, dvicatvāriṁśake varṣe naro vāhana-bhāg bhavet"

• Bandhunātha (the 4th lord) is conjoined with Karmeśa (the 10th lord)
• Tuṅgāṁśa — the 4th lord is exalted in an amsa. Parashara does not say which. The teacher takes Navamsa, or Shodasamsa (D-16), because Parashara sees vehicles from Shodasamsa.
• Result: the man has the fortune of a vehicle. The teacher renders the year as "the 24th year". (The compound dvi-catvāriṁśa is literally forty-two.)

Exchange of 4th and 11th Lords → Vehicle in the 12th Year

Lābheśe sukha-rāśisthe, sukheśe lābha-saṁyute; dvādaśe vatsare prāpte jāto vāhana-bhāg bhavet.

• The 11th lord in the 4th house and the 4th lord in the 11th house — an exchange.
• It is good. The 11th is the fructification of desires; the 4th is vehicular comfort.
• Result: a vehicle in the 12th year — the same year as verse 10, which also had the 4th lord in the 11th.

The teacher's speculation: two combinations with the 4th lord in the 11th both give the 12th year. Parashara may be using an unstated rāśi daśā that starts from the 4th house (or the 4th lord), the way Narayana daśā starts from lagna, in which the 12th year is significant when the 4th lord is in the 11th.

This exchange is not rare. Memorise it and look for examples.

General Principle: Śubham Śubhatve

"Śubhaṁ śubhatve bhāvasya, pāpatve phalam anyathā"

If the house has functional benefic influences, predict good results. If it has functional malefic influences, predict bad results.

• The 9th lord in the 4th: when his daśā comes there is vehicular happiness and fortune with vehicles.
• The 8th lord in the 4th: tension or anxiety over the vehicle, or an accident.
• Not only occupation. The 8th lord aspecting the 4th house, or conjoining the 4th lord, is also bad.

Parashara states it for completeness. The verses are examples and cannot cover every result.

"You have to intelligently judge the influences on each house and each house lord. There is no other alternative. These combinations can help to an extent, but their aim is to establish the basics for you so that you know how to think."

Key Distinction: 4th House vs. 4th Lord vs. A4

The verses use only the house and its lord. No ārūḍha is involved. That matters, because the three show different things:

Benefics on the 4th house, Saturn in A4:

• The vehicle on the ground is Saturn-like — lowly, not a great car. People say he has "some lowly car".
• But the 4th house is strong, so he is very happy with it.
• Happiness high, perception low.

Benefics in A4, Saturn in the 4th house:

• People think he has beautiful cars.
• He is unhappy. Either he does not use them — two nice cars in the garage, but he works in the city and always goes by train — or he is never satisfied and always wants the next model up.

"All the Arudha Padas are people's perceptions. Those are the tangible things on the ground using which people form their impressions."
