BPHS Ch.24 — 5th Lord in Houses 1–3: Scholar/Crooked (Argala on 10th), Family Patriarch (5L in 2H), Brothers (5L in 3H) & Amala Yoga (Benefics in 10th)

Parāśara’s verses on the 5th lord in the first three houses, each result explained by taking the relevant house as lagna. In lagna: a scholar with fortunate children, yet thrifty (6th lord from the 12th with argala on the 12th), not straightforward (8th lord from the 10th with argala on the 10th) and a gatherer of easy money (10th lord from the 8th in the 6th from the 8th). Amala Yoga, benefics in the 10th from lagna and Moon, is brought in to show that the 10th is the house of conduct. In the 2nd: many children, wealth, the pillar of a big family, good reputation. In the 3rd: close to brothers, miserly, absorbed in his own work.

Key principle

Planets in lagna always have an argala on the 12th house. So they have an influence on the spending of the person.

BPHS Chapter 24 — 5th Lord in Lagna, the 2nd and the 3rd

5th Lord in 1st House (Lagna)

The teacher asks the class to guess: good or bad? A student says "excellent results". The verse then lists two good results and three bad ones.

Results given by Parāśara:

  • Vidvān — a scholar
  • Putra-sukhānvitaḥ — has happiness from children
  • Kadaryaḥ — does not spend much money; miserly or thrifty ("it could be either")
  • Vakra-cittaḥ — crooked-minded; not straightforward
  • Para-dravyāpahārakaḥ — takes away other people's money

The student's guess stands. A trine lord in lagna is a good combination.

"It is a good combination. The thing is, he chose to emphasize on some negatives so that you know those are also possible."

Vidvān (scholar):

  • Lagna is the basic nature of the person. The 5th lord of scholarship in lagna: scholarship affects the basic nature. He is a scholar by nature and is seen as one.

Happiness from children:

  • A student asks: the 5th lord in lagna shows some effect of children on the person, but what makes it happy or unhappy? The teacher agrees it can go either way.
  • The 5th lord in lagna means a lot of attention goes to children. It may be pride ("my son is the Prime Minister of India") or worry ("my son doesn't want to study").
  • Parāśara states the positive, and there are reasons for it:
    • From lagna the 5th lord aspects the 5th house by graha dṛṣṭi (half aspect).
    • He is in a trine from the 5th house.
    • Take the 5th house as lagna: the lagna lord is in the 9th. The children are fortunate.
  • Worry over children comes only if the 5th house and this planet are both afflicted. Then the children cannot realise their fortune and the father is preoccupied with it.

Kadaryaḥ (miserly):

  • A student proposes the 2nd house. The teacher: the 2nd shows his financial position, not his spending. Spending is the 12th house.
  • A planet in lagna is in the 2nd from the 12th, so he has argala on the 12th.

"Planets in lagna always have an argala on the 12th house. So they have an influence on the spending of the person."

  • From the 12th house the 5th lord is the 6th lord, the lord of obstacles. Wherever he sits, he wants to obstruct spending. The argala lets him do it.
  • It does not mean the person is a miser. When this planet's periods come, there are brakes on spending.

Vakra-cittaḥ (crooked-minded):

  • The teacher calls it unfair at first sight: a trine lord in a trine, and the man is called crooked.
  • Straightforward or cunning is seen from the 10th house (a student's answer, accepted).

"10th house shows, apart from the karma, the actions of the person, 10th house is the house of the basic character of the person. The basic character and the conduct of the person in the world."

  • The planet in lagna is in the 4th from the 10th, so he has argala on the 10th, as he has on the 12th. The same principle gives a second result.
  • It is not a good argala. The 5th house is the 8th from the 10th, so it is the argala of the 8th lord on the 10th. He is a scholar, but he is not conducive to good conduct in society. There are some spots on his behaviour.
  • A student asks whether this is a basic trait or shows only in the planet's daśā. Answer: it is a basic trait in general, and more pronounced during the daśā of the planet.

Amala Yoga (brought in to show that the 10th house is the house of character):

  • Amala Yoga (not Vimala Yoga, which a student first thought of): benefics in the 10th house from lagna and from Moon, or at least from lagna. Some authors state only lagna. If the 10th from both has benefics, it is good.
  • Result: spotless behaviour in society and an excellent reputation.
  • Reputation is normally seen from the 5th house, but that reputation is following: people who want to emulate you. The 10th is reputation for deeds and behaviour.

"The 10th house is reputation as in people say, oh, he did this deed, he did that, he behaves like this. So all that behavior, your behavior in the society is also from the 10th house, not just your work."

  • So the 8th lord from the 10th having argala on the 10th shows some spots on the behaviour. He is not spotless.

Para-dravyāpahārakaḥ (takes others' money):

  • Other people in general are the 7th house. (The 11th is close friends.) Their money is the 2nd from the 7th: the 8th house.

"8th house in your chart is basically money that you get from other people. It's the 2nd house from 7th house. So 8th house is the house of easy money. Other people's money basically that becomes yours."

  • Take the 8th house as lagna. The 5th lord in lagna is the 10th lord in the 6th from there: the lord of one upachaya in another upachaya.
  • The upachayas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th.

"If the lord of one upachaya is in another upachaya, it shows some kind of accumulation."

  • Counted from the 2nd house, that is accumulation of one's own money. Counted from the 8th, it is easy money: gambling, inheritance, some other means.
  • He need not be killing people and taking their money. The bottom line: he has a good chance of accumulating a lot of money easily. A student adds "or become a parasite"; the teacher: possibly.

5th Lord in 2nd House

Results given by Parāśara:

  • Bahu-putraḥ — many children
  • Dhanānvitaḥ — endowed with money
  • Kuṭumba-poṣakaḥ — feeds the family
  • Mānī — has honour; a respectable person in society
  • Strī-priyaḥ — liked by women, or liked by his wife. Strī can mean either. "What exactly Parāśara means, we are not sure."
  • Suyaśā bhuvi — good fame in the world

Many children:

  • The lord of children is in the 2nd, the house of family: many children in the family (a student's point, accepted).
  • The 2nd is the 10th from the 5th. The 5th lord in a kendra from the 5th house is conducive to good children and many of them.

Wealth:

  • The planet who controls his abilities is in the house of money. He puts his intelligence into money.
  • Take the 2nd house as lagna: the 4th lord is in lagna. A kendra lord in lagna is good for that house.

Kuṭumba-poṣakaḥ (feeds the family):

  • Anybody feeds his wife and children. The meaning is a man who earns a lot and sustains many people: brothers, sisters, parents, uncles. He is the pillar of a big family.
  • The 2nd is the house of family. From the 2nd as lagna this planet is the 4th lord in lagna. The 4th lord is property: big houses, vehicles, comforts, some peace of mind for the family. Movable and immovable property.
  • He is a patriarch bringing up a big family.

Mānī (honoured):

  • A student says honour comes from the 5th house. The teacher: the 5th is abilities. Respect and honour in society are from the 10th.
  • From the 10th house this planet is the 8th lord in the 5th. "It can be good or bad."
  • The recording is interrupted here (the equipment is being adjusted) and the point is not taken further.

Strī-priyaḥ:

  • A student's reading: from the 7th house as lagna he is the 11th lord in the 8th.
  • The teacher goes to the 11th house instead. The 7th is relationship; the 5th from the 7th is the other person's emotional attachment to you. So the 11th is close friends: people who know you well and are attached to you.
  • From the 11th house this planet is in the 4th, so he has sukha argala on the 11th. And from the 11th he is the 7th lord, the lord of interaction.
  • The 7th lord of interaction in the 4th house of sukha, with argala on the house of friends: his friends are comfortable with him and on good terms with him.

"I am not sure why it is these women, but in general his friends are very comfortable with him and have a good relation with him."

Suyaśā (good reputation):

  • Reputation is seen from the 5th house. The 5th lord is in a kendra from the 5th.
  • He is also in a trine from the 10th (the 2nd is the 5th from the 10th). He will generate good reputation.

5th Lord in 3rd House

Results given by Parāśara:

  • Bhrātṛ-priyaḥ — liked by his brothers and likes them; close to brothers
  • Piśunaḥ — the teacher does not know the word. A student reads out the printed translation, "tale-bearer"; someone suggests a person who carries talk from here to there. "I will postpone this particular word."
  • Kadaryaḥ — miserly
  • Svakārya-nirataḥ — absorbed in his own work; not interested in helping others; self-centred, but he does a good job with his work

Close to brothers:

  • The 5th is not only fame and children. It is discretion, judgment and emotional attachment. The lord of that house in the 3rd gives attachment to brothers.
  • A student's point: take the 3rd house as lagna and this planet is the 3rd lord in lagna. The 3rd lord is initiative. The brothers have a lot of initiative and there is cooperation between them.

Miserly:

  • Same logic as for the 5th lord in lagna. There the 6th lord from the 12th had the 2nd-house argala on the 12th. Here he has the 4th-house argala on the 12th (the 3rd is the 4th from the 12th).
  • His agenda is to put brakes on spending, and he has argala on the house of spending.

Absorbed in his own work:

  • The 10th is the work of the person. The 3rd is the 6th from the 10th: he is in an upachaya from the 10th. He accumulates work. If the 10th is the list of things you have done, he builds his résumé.
  • The 3rd is also the house of initiative. He puts in a lot of initiative and gets a lot done.
  • Why his own work and not other people's? Giving and helping are partly from the 12th house: giving, compromise, humility. This planet is not conducive to the 12th and has argala on it. He does not give what he has to others, whether time, energy, or above all money.
  • Take the 2nd house of his wealth: he is the 4th lord from the 2nd, placed in the 2nd from the 2nd, with argala on it. He accumulates his money.
  • So he accumulates his money and his karma. He does not compromise and help others. He does his own work.
