Planetary Avasthas — Age, Alertness & Mood States + Sayanadi 10-State System (Most Important)

Parashara defines three avastha categories for planets: (1) Age-based (Balaadi) — Bala(0°-6°), Kumara(6°-12°), Yuva(12°-18°), Vriddha(18°-24°), Mruta(24°-30°) for odd signs; reversed for even signs; Yuva = most productive; planet nature modifies this (Mercury stronger young, Saturn stronger old). (2) Alertness-based (Trividha) — Jagrata(fully gives results), Swapna(half results), Nidra(inactive); sattvic planets in nidra still have some wisdom; tamasic planets in nidra go into very deep sleep like Kumbhakarna. (3) Mood-based — Shanta(peaceful), Mudita(delighted), Dina(helpless), Viklava(crippled), Kopita(angry), Dukhita(distressed), Kala(mischievous). Most Important: Sayanadi Avasthas (10 activity states) — "Parashara gave all categories, then said Sayanadi are the most important." Sayanadi states: Shayana(relaxed-resting), Upaveshana(sitting/half-active), Netrapani(active-watching), Prakashana(glowing/radiant, very auspicious), Gamana(going away, unfavorable), Agamana(returning, unfavorable), Sabha(at assembly/honored, very auspicious), Agama(traditional work, favorable), Bhujana(eating/nourishing), Nritya-Lipsa(eager to dance, very auspicious), Kautuka(extremely eager, very auspicious), Nidra(sleeping, unfavorable). Critical: Shayana for malefics = dangerous — "villain is relaxed because he has already arranged his evil scheme." Dasha 4-part rule: benefics give results in order — house occupied, yogas, houses owned, own avastha; malefics give own avastha first, then owned houses, yogas, house occupied. Sayanadi results apply in the 1/4 period when the planet gives its own results.

"Nritya-Lipsa — the planet wants to dance. It says: I want to get him married, I want to make him a scholar, I want to do it! If a malefic is in Shayana, you should be concerned — he must have already arranged his scheme while relaxing."

Age-Based Avasthas (Balaadi Avasthas)

The 5 stages of planetary age, based on the planet's position within a sign:

AvasthaDegree range (odd signs)Description
Bala (infant)0°–6°Needs nourishment and protection; frail
Kumara (adolescent)6°–12°Growing, not yet fully capable
Yuva (young adult)12°–18°Most productive; fully mature; can protect itself
Vriddha (old)18°–24°Weakening; frail again
Mruta (dead)24°–30°Barely alive; very weak

For even signs: The order is reversed — the first 6° = Mruta, the last 6° = Bala.

Important nuance: These avasthas are not absolute:

"There are some old people in their 70s and 80s who are so productive. And some people only 10-15 years old who have achieved so much. Adi Shankara mastered Brahma Sutras, all Upanishads, Vedas, Vedanta before age 20."

— PVNR

Also, the nature of the planet modifies the interpretation:

  • Mercury (the learner) may be stronger in Bala/Kumara avastha — the learner within is strongest when young
  • Saturn (the patient elder) may be stronger in Vriddha avastha — patience and discipline belong to old age

"For different planets, if you understand their nature, you can see which avastha is actually better for that planet. Parashara gives the basic framework — use your common sense to build on it."

— PVNR

Alertness-Based Avasthas (Trividha Avastha)

Three states, corresponding to the Upanishadic concept of Avastha Traya:

AvasthaEquivalentPlanets' behavior
Jagrata (awake)Waking stateFully gives results; sees reality
Swapna (dreaming)Dream stateGives half results; partially active
Nidra (sleeping)Deep sleepDoes not give results; inactive

"In nidravastha, the planet does not want to listen to you. You say, please I want a wife, please get me married. The planet says, I am sleeping. Let me have a nice sleep."

— PVNR

"Jagrata avastha is the most powerful — the planet is awake to the reality and gives results fully."

— PVNR

Planet-specific: A sattvic planet (Jupiter) in nidra still has some wisdom operative; a tamasic planet (Saturn, Mars) in nidra goes into very deep sleep (like Kumbhakarna). So the sleep of a benefic is not the same as the sleep of a malefic.

Mood-Based Avasthas

A collection of emotional states that modify how the planet expresses itself:

  • Shanta (peaceful) — calm results
  • Mudita (delighted) — happy, giving results joyfully
  • Dina (helpless/sad) — weak, cannot give
  • Viklava (crippled) — hampered in giving results
  • Kopita (angry) — aggressive results
  • Dukhita (distressed/depressed) — very unhappy, gives misfortune
  • Kala (mischievous) — troublemaker; creates difficulties

"If a planet is in Dukhita avastha and very old, that weakness will give its results in due time during that part of the dasha."

— PVNR

Sayanadi Avasthas — The 10 Activity States (Most Important)

These are based on what activity the planet is currently engaged in. Parashara says these are the most important:

AvasthaActivity meaningQuality
Shayana (lying down)Relaxed, restingModerate — planet gives results in a relaxed, unhurried way
Upaveshana (sitting)Half-activeModerate — some activity, neither fully passive nor active
Netrapani (eyes+hands)Watching and doingActive but not achieving great things
Prakashana (glowing)Shining, radiantVery auspicious — results come easily without struggle
Gamana (going away)In transitionUnfavorable — energy wasted in changes
Agamana (coming back)ReturningUnfavorable — energy wasted in changes
Sabha (at assembly)On the podium, being honoredVery auspicious — planet has stature being put to visible use
Agama (traditional work)Engaged in traditional/religious activitiesFavorable
Bhujana (eating)Nourishing itselfModerate — needs nourishment to give results; not fully auspicious
Nritya-Lipsa (eager to dance)Excited, wanting to show offVery auspicious — eager to give results
Kautuka (very eager)Extremely eagerVery auspicious — results given with great enthusiasm
Nidra (sleeping)InactiveUnfavorable — planet does not act

"Prakashana avastha: things just happen so easily around you. You do not have to struggle. The planet does not really have to do much — results are very easily given. Like somebody who is just glowing."

— PVNR

"Nritya-Lipsa: The planet wants to dance. 'I want to get him married, I want to make him a scholar, I want to do it!' The planet is saying — I want to dance!"

— PVNR

Key Special Notes on Shayana (Lying Down):

  • Shayana ≠ sleeping. It is a relaxed, comfortable state.
  • For a benefic in Shayana: comfortable, things are being done nicely, you feel at ease
  • For a malefic in Shayana: very dangerous — like a villain who is relaxed because he has already arranged his evil scheme

"If a malefic/villain is lying on a bed, you should be concerned. He must have arranged some way to escape. Maybe he sends 10 goons to kill the hero while he relaxes on a bed."

— PVNR

How to Use Sayanadi in Practice:

Use Sayanadi avasthas particularly in the 1/4 of the dasha period when that planet gives results. This connects to the 4-part rule for dasha interpretation:

For benefic planets (the planet worries about others first):

  1. First 1/4: Results of the house occupied
  2. Second 1/4: Yogas (who the planet is with)
  3. Third 1/4: Houses owned by the planet
  4. Fourth 1/4: Planet's own avastha (its state)

For malefic planets (self-occupied first):

  1. First 1/4: Planet's own avastha
  2. Second 1/4: Houses owned
  3. Third 1/4: Yogas
  4. Fourth 1/4: House occupied

"Benefics are like nice people — they care about others first, themselves last. Malefics are like very self-occupied people — they worry about themselves first."

— PVNR
