BPHS Ch.24 — 5th Lord in Houses 7–9: Very Dharmic (9L in 11th from 9H), A5 in 9H = Blessed, Breathing Disorders (5L in 8H = 6th from 3H) & Fortunate Son

5th Lord in the 7th, 8th and 9th — Saptama, Randhra, Bhāgya

5th Lord in 7th House

Verse: suteśe saptame mānī sarva-dharma-samanvitaḥ, putrādi-sukha-yuktaś ca paropakaraṇe rataḥ

• Mānī — honourable, respected
• Sarva-dharma-samanvitaḥ — endowed with all kinds of dharma; religious, pious, righteous
• Putrādi-sukha-yuktaḥ — happiness from children
• Paropakaraṇe rataḥ — engaged in helping others

Honourable (mānī):

• 7th = interaction with people; 5th = recognition. The lord of recognition sits in the house of interaction. He interacts a lot and is popular because of it.
• The usual test for mānī is to take the 10th house as lagna. Here that gives the 8th lord in the 10th (the 5th is 8th from the 10th, the 7th is 10th from the 10th). That can be a sudden rise in respect or a bad name. It does not tally.
• So the word is used in a different sense here. With respect to the 5th and 7th the planet is well placed; with respect to the 10th it is not.

"So somebody who deals with people and who is well known in the circles basically. He may or may not have accomplished a lot of things."

Very dharmic (sarva-dharma):

• A planet in the 7th has argala on the 9th house (the 7th is 11th from the 9th).
• Take the 9th house of dharma as lagna: the planet is the 9th lord in the 11th. The 9th from the 9th is its fortune and protection, and its lord is in the house of fulfilment.

"As far as 9th house is concerned, he is really blessed by this particular planet's placement. So he is very dharmic, very pious, very religious, righteous."

Happy with children:

• The 5th lord shows the children, and he is well placed in a quadrant from lagna.
• A5 falls in the 9th house (lord is 3rd from the 5th; 3rd from the 7th is the 9th).

"Arudha of any house, if it falls in the 9th house or 5th house or any trine, that Arudha is blessed."

• From the 7th the planet has argala on the 4th house of sukha (the 7th is 4th from the 4th). The planet whose agenda is children feeds his comfort. He is comfortable and peaceful about what his children are doing in life.

Helpful to others (paropakāra):

• Other people = 7th house. Take the 7th as lagna: the planet is the 11th lord in lagna.
• The 11th is fulfilment, gains, getting what you desire — here counted from the 7th, not from lagna. He plays a role in other people getting what they want.

Santhanam's note on this verse:

• A student asks about the note in the Santhanam edition: tall in stature, honest in serving his employer, speaks only truth.
• PVNR: Parāśara said none of this. Truthfulness is seen from the 2nd house and lagna, not from the 5th. The note may have been culled from another classic. Ignore it and stay with Parāśara. In general the native will be a righteous person; that much is not surprising.

5th Lord in 8th House

Verse: suteśe randhra-bhāvasthe svalpa-putra-sukhānvitaḥ, kāsa-śvāsa-samāyuktaḥ krodhī ca sukha-varjitaḥ

• Randhra — literally a hole, a vulnerability; the 8th house
• Svalpa-putra-sukhānvitaḥ — little happiness from children. "When you specifically say little, it means it is not much."
• Kāsa-śvāsa-samāyuktaḥ — cough, allergies, bronchitis, asthma; breathing disorders
• Krodhī — an angry person
• Sukha-varjitaḥ — without happiness, peace or comfort; wretched

A trine lord has gone into a dusthāna, the house of death, anxiety and tension. The results follow from that.

Little happiness from children:

• Where is A5? An ārūḍha cannot fall in its own house or the 7th from it, so A5 cannot be in the 5th or the 11th. The lord is 4th from the 5th; 4th from the 8th is the 11th, which is barred; take the 10th from there. A5 is in the 8th house itself.
• When the lord of a house is in the 4th from it, the ārūḍha is in that same 4th.

"If the Arudha of any house is in the 8th house from Lagna, it's not really auspicious."

• Either he has no children, or has difficulty getting them, or he has them and they keep him tense. The 8th gives not only death but tension.

Breathing problems:

• The class debates 3rd or 4th. The 4th is the heart. The 3rd is the throat, the ears and the upper respiratory tract.
• A planet in the 8th from lagna, the house of long suffering, is in the 6th from the 3rd. That can give ear, nose and throat problems, and especially respiratory tract problems.
• The limit on this rule: every planet is in the 6th from some house. A planet in the 7th is 6th from the 2nd and could trouble the eyes or the face. For the result to come, the planet must have some role in giving disease apart from that. Here it is in the 8th house itself, so it has.
• PVNR's own case: Virgo lagna, 5th lord Saturn in Aries in the 8th.

"During Saturn-Rahu, I did actually get allergic bronchitis. I basically had breathing problem for several years. Only after Mercury Dasha started, I discovered Ayurveda and I cured myself using Ayurveda."

• He puts the duration at somewhere between 5 and 10 years, "maybe around 8".

Anger (krodhī):

• Houses 7 to 12 show kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya. Krodha is the 8th.
• The planet has argala on the 5th house of emotions (the 8th is 4th from the 5th). It wants emotional stability and sits in the house of anger. The native can be short-tempered.
• PVNR was very short-tempered at one time. Saturn by himself gives stubbornness, not the fiery impulse that krodha is; Mars does that. His Saturn is in Aries, Mars's sign, with Mars there too.

No happiness (sukha-varjitaḥ):

• The 8th is not a house of being happy. It is the house of working hard, being tense, being anxious. The planet in charge of emotional stability is there, so there is no relaxation for the person.

The positive side — PVNR's own Saturn:

"It was during the Saturn Dasha that all the materially good things happened to me, like coming state first, getting 2 BA degrees in Sanskrit, 1 BA degree in Hindi when I was 10 and 11, going to IIT, coming to US, getting a master's, and having a 9+ GPA out of 10 in IIT Madras. All the academic distinctions happened in the Saturn Dasha."

• A student puts it down to Saturn's nīca-bhaṅga rāja yoga. PVNR: not necessarily. The planet that has the nīca-bhaṅga rāja yoga gives the rāja yoga, not necessarily the planet that caused the cancellation. Saturn has it, so Saturn can give.
• Parāśara gives only the negative results. There are others:
  • 5th = scholarship, 8th = working hard → a workaholic who works hard for scholarship.
  • 5th = mantra, 8th = sādhana → someone who can sit for a long time without worrying about anything and just do the mantra.
• The 5th lord in the 8th has argala on the 5th house. In his case Saturn also has graha dṛṣṭi on the 5th (the 10th aspect from Aries falls on Capricorn). Argala and graha dṛṣṭi together make the 5th strong.
• In his chart of education Saturn is in an upachaya, the 3rd house. "So there are other factors as well. It's not just this Rasi chart."
• The 5th lord in the 8th also has argala on the 7th (2nd from it) and the 10th (11th from it). The planet holding the key to scholarship influences interactions and karma: the native may use his scholarship in both.

"So there are tens or hundreds of possibilities. What Parashara said is just one possible result."

A sign with two lords (student's question — Scorpio in the 5th, Mars and Ketu in different houses):

• These verses never apply in toto, even with a single owner. They are guidelines.
• Look at who is in the 5th, who has argala on it, where the kārakas are. Among Mars and Ketu the stronger dominates; the weaker may still give some result.

5th Lord in 9th House

Verse: suteśe bhāgyage putro bhūpo vā tat-samo bhavet, svayaṁ vā granthakartā ca vikhyātaḥ kula-dīpakaḥ

• Putro bhūpo vā tat-samo bhavet — the son will be a king or the equal of one
• Svayaṁ vā granthakartā ca vikhyātaḥ — or he himself is an author, and famous
• Kula-dīpakaḥ — the light of the family; one who brings name to the lineage

The translation is corrected:

• Santhanam renders the first line as "the native will be a prince or equal to him". PVNR does not agree. The line is about the son.

"'Va' means 'or', 'svayam' himself. This is clearly saying that the previous line was about the child, not about the person being a prince or king."

Fortunate son:

• 9th = fortune, 5th = child. All you can say is that the child is extremely fortunate.

"It doesn't necessarily mean he is king, but it means he is in a very good position in life."

Famous:

• The answer from the class is A5: with the lord 5th from the 5th, the pada falls in lagna.
• The lord of the 5th house of fame is in a trine. He is well known and has a good following.

Granthakartā:

• The stress is on fame, not on the book. In the old days one of the very few ways to become famous was to learn a great deal, put it in a book and teach it.
• Any link with writing? From the 3rd house of communication the planet is in the 7th and aspects the 3rd. So there is a chance of reputation through writing, or through some other 3rd-house matter. The bottom line is fame.

Kula-dīpaka:

• A student asks whether it means the highest in the family. Not necessarily. Dīpa is a light. He makes the family known to the world: the world talks about him and his family.
