Children — Timing Conception and Birth

Question (end of April 2005): married since 2002, no children yet. "Should I plan for children this year?"

In D-7 the class did not use ārūḍhas. The teacher: what ārūḍhas show in the Saptāṁśa is not well understood; take the houses and their lords.

Annual chart 2005 — D-7, Capricorn lagna

• Mars is the ruler of the year. He is the 5th lord of the year's rāśi chart (Cancer lagna), and in D-7 he is exalted in lagna.
• So something concerning children happens this year.
• A child conceived after April cannot be born inside this annual year. This year can give conception and the news; the birth belongs to the next year.
• Venus — the same daśā that gives the job change: 5th and 10th lord of the D-7, the yogakāraka, in the 9th house. He is debilitated. Even so, the 5th lord in the house of fortune gives happy news about children.
• Venus is also the planet that shows the first child in the natal D-7 (Part 15).

Annual chart 2006

Ruler of the year: Saturn.

• Putra Sahama is in Pisces in the rāśi chart. Its lord is Jupiter, the putra kāraka.
• D-7 of the year has Cancer lagna, an even sign. Count five signs backward: Pisces. Pisces shows the first child, and it acts as the lagna of that child.
• Jupiter occupies Pisces, his own sign. For the first child to be born in a year, that lagna must be strong. It is.
• The lord of the Putra Sahama of the rāśi chart sits in the very sign that shows the first child.
• Jupiter's daśā in the 2006 annual chart: April 26 – June 27. Expect the birth in May–June 2006.

Working back to the conception

A birth in May–June needs conception in August–September 2005. The daśā running then in the 2005 annual chart is Venus — which the 2005 D-7 already favours.

"For Jupiter daśā in 2006 to give a child, Venus daśā in 2005 has to give the conception as well as the news."

What he was told, and what happened

• Told: job change likely August–October; try for a child in August–September; strong chance of a birth next May–June.
• Conception came in August 2005. The pregnancy was confirmed in early October.
• The birth itself was still ahead when this class was held; it stands as the prediction for May–June 2006.

Sex of the First Child from D-7 — and Where It Failed

A student asked whether the annual chart can show the sex. The teacher: no — the natal chart only.

The rule

1. Look at the D-7 lagna. Odd sign: count the 5th forward for the first child. Even sign: count the 5th backward.
2. If Rāhu or Ketu influences the lagna, reverse the direction. Example: Pisces lagna counts backward to Scorpio; with Ketu in Pisces it counts forward to Cancer.
3. Take the lord of the sign reached. Treat him as the lagna of the child.
4. Planets with that lord: Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Rāhu = boy. Moon, Venus, Ketu = girl. Saturn and Mercury are eunuchs and count as girl.
5. The sign that lord occupies: odd = boy, even = girl.
6. Modifiers exist — parivartana among them — and were left for a later class. A parivartana involving the lagna reverses the sex of all the children.

Applied to this chart — natal D-7, Aquarius lagna, Ketu in lagna

• Plain count (Aquarius is odd, forward): Gemini. Lord Mercury is in Capricorn with the Moon. Moon = girl; even sign = girl.
• With the Ketu reversal: Aquarius is also Rāhu's own sign, so Ketu in it is strong and the reversal is applied. Backward: Libra. Lord Venus is alone in Taurus, an even sign = girl.
• Both counts say girl.

The result

The ultrasound showed a boy.

"Either way, it has to be a girl. So our astrology basically went wrong on that."

• There is a parivartana in this D-7 between Sun and Jupiter. It does not involve the lagna; it involves the 7th house. The teacher does not know of a rule that makes it count, and wondered whether a strong 7th should be treated the same way.
• An ultrasound that says boy seldom turns out a girl. The reverse happens more often. So the reading is taken as wrong.

"Timing the birth is easier. But predicting the sex of a child — there are some thumb rules, but they are not 100% right. They are right only 80% of the time."

Closing — a Fuzzy Science

"It is not a deterministic science. It is a probabilistic science. It is a fuzzy science."

• There is no formula that yields the answer. List the positives, list the negatives, balance them, and judge which is more likely.
• That takes intuition, situational sense and practice.
• A wrong conclusion early can send you off on a tangent. When intuition says you are straying, step back and look at all the factors again.
• On the failed sex prediction:

"However many predictions you make correctly, you have to always realize that there is something missing. Hopefully, if we keep working on it, we will find some more missing links so that the next generation is placed better than we are."
