Chart Analysis Methodology — The 5-Step Framework

The complete step-by-step methodology for reading any divisional chart: Lagna sign → Lagna lord → Planets in Lagna → Aspects → Arudha. Why you go to the corresponding divisional chart to find the "why" behind Rasi-level events. Key principles for synthesizing multiple levels.

"If you see Shani and Rahu in somebody's 4th house in Rasi, that means at the physical level he does not have comfort. But WHY? — you have to go to the corresponding divisional chart to find out."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Chart Analysis Methodology (Full Framework)

Step-by-step approach when analyzing any matter:

Step 1: Identify the Varga (Divisional Chart)

Choose the divisional chart corresponding to the life area you want to study.

Life AreaChart
Physical existence, health, personalityD-1 (Rasi)
Marriage, inner nature, dharmaD-9 (Navamsha)
Career, professionD-10 (Dashamsha)
Education, learning (general)D-24 (Siddhamsa / Chaturthamsha)
Spirituality, upasanaD-20 (Vimsamsa)
ParentsD-12 (Dvadashamsa)
ChildrenD-7 (Saptamsha)
Past life karmaD-60 (Shashtiamsa)

Step 2: Identify the Relevant House

Different meanings of the same house apply in different divisional charts:

House4th house means this in:
D-1 (Rasi)Heart (physical), overall happiness
D-24 (Siddhamsa)Education / learning
D-12 (Dvadashamsa)Mother

"If you see Shani and Rahu in somebody's 4th house in Rasi, that means at the physical level he does not have comfort. He is not happy. But WHY? — you have to go to the corresponding divisional chart to find out."

— PVNR

Step 3: Analyze the House (Four Influences)

In order of importance:

A. Occupants (highest direct influence)

"The occupants decide what actually happens in that house — like us conducting classes in a room we don't own. The owner sets some rules, but the occupants define the room's character."

— PVNR

B. House Lord (ownership = boss / sets the rules)

  • Commands all resources related to that matter
  • "The boss" — even if not present, can veto things

C. Graha Drishti (planetary aspect = desire, temporary)

  • A planet having graha drishti on a house has a desire to influence that matter
  • This desire is triggered only during a specific Dasha or transit
  • It is temporary, not permanent
  • Analogy: Someone has a desire to learn astrology — but that desire only becomes action when the right time comes

D. Rashi Drishti (sign aspect = permanent but not necessarily strong)

  • The planet has a permanent presence in that house's affairs
  • But this influence may be minor
  • Analogy: A typist who attends all meetings of a project and keeps diligent notes — permanently present, but not decisive
  • Importance depends on whether the planet also has Graha Drishti, Argala, etc.

E. Argala (decisive intervention, triggered)

  • The planet is destined to influence that house — it has no choice
  • It may not even "want" to influence that house, but it must
  • Analogy: The physical design engineer in a chip design project — his work is mandatory for the project to complete, regardless of how much he understands the whole picture
  • Also triggered by Dasha/transit — temporary in timing but decisive in nature

Summary: Graha Drishti = desire. Rashi Drishti = permanent minor presence. Argala = destined decisive intervention.

Key Principles Crystallized in This Lesson

1. House vs Lord — Animate vs Inanimate

"Rasis are inanimate — just environments/places. Planets are animate beings with life and agency."

— PVNR
  • To see the influence on a matter → look at the house
  • To see the person connected to a matter → look at the house lord (the lord = the person with life)
  • Example: 9H shows guidance received from guru. But the Guru himself = 9H lord.

2. Kendras = Vishnu Sthanas = Effort; Trikonas = Lakshmi Sthanas = Blessings

  • Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10): effort, action, Vishnu's domain
  • Trikona (1, 5, 9): fruits, blessings, Lakshmi's domain
  • Lagna = both a Kendra and a Trikona → doubly important
  • A planet in Lagna is both well-supported by effort and blessed by fruit

3. When Raj Yoga Bears Fruit

  • Every Raj Yoga has a trigger — it doesn't run from birth
  • The trigger = the right Dasha or circumstance arriving
  • Once triggered → the yoga lasts for life
  • But the peak material fruits are usually concentrated in a particular Dasha period

"Just because you don't know astrology right now, it doesn't mean you won't become a great astrologer. Just the right Dasha has to come."

— PVNR

4. Yogakaraka — The Most Potent Raj Yoga Planet

When one planet owns both a Trikona (5H or 9H) AND a Kendra (4H, 7H, or 10H), that single planet is a Yogakaraka — it creates Raja Yoga on its own.

Chart: For any given Lagna, find which planet owns both a trine and a kendra:

LagnaYogakaraka
Capricorn / AquariusVenus (owns Taurus + Libra from these lagnas)
Cancer / LeoMars (owns Scorpio + Aries)
Taurus / LibraSaturn (owns Capricorn + Aquarius)

5. Graha Malika Yoga

  • Requirement: 4+ consecutive houses each occupied by at least 1 of the 7 planets (Ra/Ke excluded)
  • The house where it starts = the trigger
  • The house where it ends/culminates = the primary result
  • A very rare and powerful yoga — when found, immediately indicates greatness in that divisional chart's domain
  • Usually overlooked; PVNR specifically praised the student who found it in this class

6. Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga

  • Triggered by the owner of the sign where the neecha planet sits — when that owner is in a Kendra
  • The owner (in Kendra) = effort being applied → the neecha planet will eventually be "satisfied"
  • The yoga is activated by the owning planet's Dasha/transit, not the neecha planet's own Dasha
  • After activation, remains throughout life

7. Tapasvi Yoga

  • Combination: Venus + Saturn + Ketu together, in mutual trines, or in mutual opposition
  • More potent when occurring in the 8th or 12th house (Moksha Trikona)
  • 8H is stronger location than 12H for this yoga
