Dasha System Roles, Bhava vs Pada & Marriage Timing Puzzle

Each dasha system has its own specific focus: Vimshottari shows mind's experience; Narayana Dasha shows actual events on the ground; Ashtottari shows life milestones; Conditional dashas show specific karmic threads. Bhava vs Pada (fundamental distinction): Bhava = the house as an ideal category; Pada = the materialized form of that house in the world. Marriage puzzle: Jayaram's chart with three candidate dates (A: January 26, 1997; B: May 9, 1997; C: August 17, 1998). Venus and Ketu as marriage givers — Venus gives marriage through desire; Ketu gives traditional/arranged marriage through dharmic obligation.

"Bhava is the house in the ideal sense — what the house represents. Pada is the materialized manifestation of that house in the physical world."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Dasha System Roles — Each Dasha Has Its Own Focus

A student noted that in previous classes, Narayana Dasha was sometimes used to predict events (marriages, deaths) that it is not technically meant for. PVNR acknowledged this as a real and important point:

The Three Core Dasha Systems

DashaWhat It TracksBest Used For
Narayana DashaMovement of Narayana (Vishnu) in the chart with time; focus of effortWhat the person is actually doing; where their energy is directed
Sudasha (Sudarsana Chakra Dasha)Movement of Lakshmi; focus of blessingsWhere blessings are coming from; where fortune flows
Vimshottari DashaExperience of the mindHow the mind reacts to events; what the mind perceives; emotions and inner experience

Why We (Improperly) Use All for Everything

  • "Boundaries are fuzzy" — when there is effort (Narayana), there is often some blessing (Sudasha) too; they are correlated but not the same
  • When the mind perceives trouble (Vimshottari), probably there is trouble
  • It is not a sin to use Vimshottari for everything, but it is not ideal
  • Every dasha has its precise focus; using each for its designated purpose gives cleaner, more accurate results
  • Example: Narayana Dasha of D2 for financial matters = impeccable; Vimshottari of D2 = not as focused

Many Other Dashas

  • There are many dashas beyond these three, each with its own unique focus
  • The ideal is to match the dasha system to the question being asked
  • Real-life consulting forces compromises; students should strive for purity in analysis

Bhava vs. Pada — The Fundamental Distinction (Review)

TermMeaningNatureExample
Bhava (house)Concept, meaning; what is in the mindIntangible"Comfort" — what I feel inside; nobody else knows my true comfort
Pada (Arudha)Symbol, word; tangible manifestation in the worldTangible"The car I drive" — visible, the world can see and judge it
  • The word "bhava" in Sanskrit means meaning/concept; houses ARE bhava
  • The word "pada" means a word or symbol; Arudha padas ARE padas
  • You communicate bhava using padas because padas are tangible and universally perceivable
  • The 4th house shows your true inner comfort (nobody else can truly know this); A4 shows the tangible indicators of your comfort (your car, your home, your TV)
  • This distinction should be rigorously maintained: houses show internal reality; Arudha padas show external/tangible manifestation

Conditional Nakshatra Dashas — Applicability Rules

Recap: Checking Conditions Before Applying Dasha

When analyzing a chart, first check which conditional dashas apply in the Rasi chart:

ConditionApplicable Dasha
Lagna in VargottamaSatabdika Dasha
Sun in LagnaShaktihaini Dasha
10L in 10HChaturasi Disha
7L in Lagna OR Lagna Lord in 7HDwi-Saptati Sama Dasha (72-year)
  • Conditions are always checked in the Rasi chart (not Navamsa)
  • Once a condition applies, that dasha is used for the chart
  • If the 7L is in lagna, Dwi-Saptati Sama (equal 72-year) nakshatra dasha applies regardless of birth time changes within a few minutes (since 7L remains in lagna for much longer than lagna changes)

Marriage Puzzle — Jayaram's Chart

Chart Data

  • Birth: January 20, 1968, 2:55 AM, Bangalore, India
  • 4 possible marriage dates given:
    • A: January 26, 1997
    • B: May 9, 1997
    • C: August 17, 1998
    • D: August 22, 1999
  • Question: Which is the actual marriage date?

Step 1: Applicable Dasha

  • Venus is the 7th lord and he is in lagna → Dwi-Saptati Sama Dasha applies
  • All 4 dates fall in Rahu mahadasha (approx. 1994–2003)

Step 2: Can Rahu Give Marriage? (D9 Analysis)

  • Go to Navamsa chart for marriage analysis (Parashara: Navamsa = chart of marriage)
  • In D9: Rahu is in 6H with Venus (karaka for marriage + lagna lord)
  • Venus and Rahu are friendly → they exchange results (rule: two planets together exchange results if not inimical; Sun+Rahu = eclipse so no exchange)
  • Rahu will give Venus results = lagna lord results + marriage karaka + aspect on UL and A7
  • UL and A7 are in Sagittarius; both are aspected by Venus/Rahu sign
  • Conclusion: Rahu can absolutely give marriage; the given lagna seems valid

Step 3: Which Antardasha?

  • The 4 dates fall in:
    • Jan 26, 1997 → Moon antardasha
    • May 9, 1997 → Moon antardasha (Jupiter pratyantardasha)
    • Aug 17, 1998 → Mars antardasha
    • Aug 22, 1999 → Mercury antardasha (border of Sun/Moon)

Ruling out Capricorn antardasha (Aug 17, 1998):

  • Capricorn has A8 (Mrityupada = death pada) in D9
  • A8 = problems in marriage, fighting with wife, separation — opposite of marriage
  • Capricorn has no connection to UL, A7, Venus, or Ketu → ruled out

Can Mars antardasha give marriage?:

  • Mars is 7th lord → seems capable
  • BUT: Mars is with Sun in D9
  • Two planets together exchange results → Mars gives Sun's results, Sun gives Mars's results
  • AND: Mars and Saturn have parivartana (exchange) in D9
  • Triple exchange chain: Sun gives Mars results → Mars gives Saturn results → Saturn gives Sun results
  • So in Mars antardasha, Saturn's results are being given; Saturn is in A6 (separation) and 12th from UL → NOT conducive to marriage
  • August 17, 1998 ruled out

Narrowing to Moon and Mercury:

  • Moon is in UL and A7 in Sagittarius → very directly linked to tangible marriage
  • Moon and Jupiter have exchange (parivartana in D9): Moon (10L = social karma) exchanges with Jupiter (3L = initiative/drive) → exchange gives fructification of social function (marriage as social event)
  • This Moon+Jupiter exchange is also Gajakesari Yoga (Moon-Jupiter exchange is auspicious)
  • The exchange fructifies when Moon dasha + Jupiter pratyantardasha runs
  • Mercury is 9th lord in 9H in D9 (aspecting UL as Ketu's dispositor) → also capable
  • Conclusion: Moon and Mercury antardashas both capable; Mars and Capricorn ruled out

Step 4: Narayana Dasha of D9 — 3-Part Rule

Virgo Mahadasha running (Narayana Dasha of D9):

  • Is Virgo capable of giving marriage? Yes — it is aspecting UL and A7; Ketu is in Virgo; Venus aspects Virgo

Applying 3-part rule to Virgo dasha:

  • Virgo is a Sirshodaya (head-rising) sign → gives results in the first 1/3
  • Why is Virgo giving marriage? Because it aspects UL/A7 AND has Ketu+Venus = the last 1/3 (aspects/occupants) is most relevant
  • Lord Mercury is also in Gemini (Sirshodaya) → gives results in 2nd 1/3
PartPeriodResult From
First 1/3(early Virgo dasha)Virgo sign itself aspecting UL/A7
Second 1/3Mercury as lord (9L in 9H, Ketu's dispositor)
Last 1/3Jan 1999 – Jan 2000Planets aspecting/occupying Virgo (Venus, Moon, Mercury, Rahu, Ketu)

Order within last 1/3 (by descending degree):

  1. Venus (28°) = first 2.4 months from Jan 1999
  2. Moon (27°) = next 2.4 months
  3. Mercury (in Gemini aspecting Virgo)
  4. Rahu → Ketu
  5. Ketu (in Virgo, smallest longitude after reversal)

August 22, 1999 = approximately 7 months into the last 1/3 = falls in Mercury's sub-period within the last 1/3

Step 5: Annual TP Chart (Most Decisive)

1996 TP chart (covers Jan 26, 1997 range):

  • Hora lord = Mars; Mars is lagna lord in 12H (D9); not promising for marriage
  • Vivaha Sahama not well-linked

1997 TP chart (covers May 9, 1997):

  • Hora lord = Venus
  • Venus is the 5th lord in the 7th house = wonderful for marriage (karaka for marriage + 5L + in 7H)
  • Venus forms Raj yoga with Mercury (both aspecting lagna)
  • D9: Venus is the 7th lord in 9H (dharma) in UL; Mercury is in 7H
  • This year stands out very clearly as a marriage year
  • Dasha running May 9, 1997: Venus/Mercury in Dwi-Saptati Sama dasha
  • Venus and Mercury form Raj yoga in 7H in Rasi chart → perfect alignment
  • Bhoga of Mercury in Venus mahadasha: Mercury is 11th from Venus (Venus antardasha); from Mercury count 11 = Leo (5H) = Poorva Punya → auspicious event

1999 TP chart (covers Aug 22, 1999):

  • Hora lord = Venus again, BUT Venus is in 6H of D9 = Marana Karaka Sthana for Venus
  • 9th lord in 6H = dharma becomes troubled; person may not follow dharma
  • This year shows fighting with wife, quarreling, A6-related problems
  • NOT the marriage year

Conclusion

May 9, 1997 — confirmed by the puzzle-poser later as the actual marriage date.

Key Teaching: The TP (Tithi Pravesha) annual chart is the most reliable technique for timing events. When multiple techniques give similar results, confidence is high; when they diverge, rely on TP. For specific short-term events, pratyantardasha gives the clearest picture (more focused than mahadasha or antardasha).

Venus and Ketu as Marriage Givers

Why are Venus and Ketu considered the two primary planets for giving marriage?

Venus

  • Natural karaka of love, marriage, and relationships
  • 7th house from Venus = Pisces (Jupiter's sign) = dharma, wisdom
  • Venus gives marriage for kama (love, desire, material partnership)

Ketu

  • Planet of lineage, parampara, succession (Matsya Avatara rescued the Vedas = continues tradition)
  • Planet of moksha — wants beings to complete dharma quickly: get married, have children, fulfill lineage, then go to moksha
  • Ketu gives marriage for the purpose of children and lineage — not for love or material desire
  • If at the time of marriage only Ketu is active in the Narayana Dasha = person got married for the purpose of having children, not because of love
  • If Venus is also involved = some love and kama (desire) is also present
