Planet Analogies for Career (D-10 Significations)

The native worked as a software consultant from November 1995 and moved in December 2001 to producing and directing television programmes. PVNR asks the class which planets should show in the artha trikona (2nd, 6th, 10th) of her Dasamsa.

The court analogy

"Sun shows king, Moon shows minister, Mercury shows prince or a scholar in the court of the king, Jupiter shows a priest or Rajpurohit, Venus shows a dancing girl, Saturn shows the workers. If you look at this analogy, you will be able to understand what kind of work these different planets represent."

What the class got wrong, and the corrections

• Software = Mercury, and Ketu with him. Rahu is heavy machinery — hardware more than software.
• Saturn is not "any job that needs discipline." Even actors have to be disciplined. Saturnine jobs are those in which discipline, hard work and the ability to labour are the main thing — the hard, laborious jobs in the lower rung of society.
• Venus = entertainment, as the dancing girl. Actors show a strong Venus in the artha trikonas of the Dasamsa (Tom Hanks and Aishwarya Rai were seen in earlier classes). The analogy is not literal: "Tom Hanks is certainly not a dancing girl."
• A director or producer is not the same as an actor. Venus may be there, but it is not the important thing. The job is to design the show, give it a form, bring the team together and see that the form is achieved. That is closer to writing than to performing — and writing is Mercury.

Mercury vs Venus — Bhu Tattva and Jala Tattva

Venus — the poet

• One of the 108 names of Venus is Kavi, the poet. Venus does show writing, but that writing is poetic.
• It is not to be taken literally. There is a translation from the language of imagination into what you see and feel.
• Venus is a Jala tattva (watery) planet. What he creates can fit into a form but has no clear shape of its own. A poem can be read differently depending on where the reader comes from.

Mercury — the author

• Mercury is the planet of communication, of scholarship, of putting thoughts together in a readable form.
• Mercury is a Bhu tattva (earthy) planet. Earthy means solid: it has a clear form.
• The writing Mercury shows is prose — direct communication, presenting ideas in a solid form. A novel, a story, a newspaper story, a TV story are Mercury more than Venus.

"Venus is the poet, but Mercury is the author. Mercury is the writer."

Media is Mercury

"The planet of media is not Venus. Media is always shown by Mercury."

• So in the chart of a TV producer expect a strong Mercury in the 10th house: the work is to communicate and to give the show a form.
• Mercury in the 10th does not have to mean media. It can be software, mathematics, logic. Media is one of the possibilities. Which one it is depends on the planets that have argala on Mercury (Part 3).
• With the rectified time the Dasamsa lagna is Libra and Mercury is in the 10th house (Cancer). That one placement explains both the software career and the media career.

Argala — How Planets Intervene in the Career

Argala is intervention. From any house or planet, the planets in certain houses intervene in its matters.

The argala houses

• The primary argalas are from the 2nd, 4th and 11th. The 5th gives a secondary argala.
• The 5th-house argala is obstructed by the 9th house (virodhargala).
• PVNR's illustration from his own lagna: the 2nd house has argala on lagna — lagna is who I am, the 2nd is what resources I have, so it shows the effect of my resources on my existence. The 5th has argala on lagna — my abilities have a role in deciding who I am and what I do.

Only the planets in the house count, not its lord

A student asks whether the 11th lord should be taken when the 11th is empty.

• A house with no planet still has argala, but it is very weak.
• "In the case of argala, ignore the lord of the house causing argala. Only the planets there."

Argala on Mercury in the example Dasamsa (Libra lagna, Mercury in Cancer in the 10th)

• 2nd from Mercury — Rahu in Leo (dhanargala). The resources used in the Mercurian career are of Rahu's nature: heavy machines, modern electronic machines, equipment that creates an illusion — or deception.
  • Rahu is research and digging deep. He is also the planet of illusion. Photographers and cinematographers show a strong Rahu in the 10th, and so do magicians: they create something that looks like something else.
• 11th from Mercury — Taurus, empty. No planet shows the motivation.
• 5th from Mercury — Venus and Sun in Scorpio (sutargala). These are the abilities: Venus the ability to entertain, Sun the ability to use contacts and command.
• 9th from Mercury — Moon in Pisces (virodhargala to the 5th).

So the career is given by Mercury, with a Venusian and a solar strand. The solar strand is management — taking authority and telling people what to do. It can also show the use of political connections. Whether she would succeed in politics cannot be said from this alone.

Which side wins

A student points out that the Moon obstructs and looks strong.

• First principle: whichever is stronger, argala or virodhargala, dominates.
• Second principle: the virodhargala still functions.
• It depends on the daśā running. In the antardaśā of the obstructing planet the virodhargala can dominate and there is tension.
• For a static judgment over the whole life, the argala dominates here: two planets (Venus and Sun) against one (Moon).

What the Moon's virodhargala means here

• The Moon is the 10th lord in the 6th — hard work, solving problems herself (Part 5).
• The Sun's argala makes her behave like a king or queen: sit back and tell people what to do.
• The Moon's obstruction mars that to some extent. She gets into every small detail like a diligent minister and solves the problems herself.
• The argala dominates overall, except when the daśās favour the Moon. She still channels a lot of work and has authority in her workplace.

Moon vs Sun — Making Contacts and Using Them

PVNR first says the Sun is the ability to cultivate contacts, then corrects himself.

"Actually, Moon is the planet for contacts, not the Sun. Moon is the planet for creating contacts and Sun is the planet for using those contacts."

• To go to a person you know and say "can you do this, can you do that" — that is the job of the king.
• Sun is the king and Moon is the minister. Both depend on channelling work to other people. Neither does the work himself.
• At the level of the Sun there is more authority.
• Sun having argala on the 10th house in any chart: the person's work has a lot of using influence, telling people what to do, commanding authority.

Which Dasha — Vimshottari from Moon or from Lagna

First rule out the conditional daśās

PVNR runs through the conditions in the example chart:

• Lagna lord in the 7th or 7th lord in lagna (Dwisaptati Sama) — no.
• Sun in lagna (Shashtihayani) — no.
• Lagna vargottama (Shatabdika) — no.
• Lagna in a Venusian amsa, Taurus or Libra (Dwadasottari) — no.

None applies, so Vimshottari is used.

Moon is the default

"By default, it's always Moon. You use Lagna Vimshottari Dasha only when Lagna is really, really strong, much stronger compared to Moon."

• In her chart both are strong, so the Moon is taken.
• The Moon is the karaka for human beings. In a human chart give more importance to the Moon.
• Mundane charts are different. In lunar and solar new year charts, financial and meteorological new year charts, give no special importance to the Moon. Take whichever of Moon and lagna is stronger and compute Vimshottari from it.

Janma Rasi is always the Moon's sign

A student asks whether her rasi is then Gemini.

• Yes. Janma Rasi is Gemini; the lagna is Kanya.
• Whether lagna or Moon is stronger, only the Moon's sign is called Janma Rasi and only the Moon's nakshatra is called Janma Nakshatra.
• Transits are also judged mainly from the Moon, though lagna, Sun and the other references have their own role, as Ashtakavarga shows.

The Six Levels of Dasha and Their Reference Points

PVNR opens his own chart to show how far the daśā levels can be taken. His Mercury daśā runs from 1994 to 2011. A trip to the Grand Canyon in one week, or teaching a class one morning, will not show in the 17-year daśā or in a 2.5-year antardaśā. It has to show at the level whose length matches the event.

The six levels

Mahādaśā, antardaśā, pratyantardaśā, sūkṣma antardaśā, prāṇa antardaśā, deha antardaśā.

The reference to give priority at each level

• The last three are Sun, Moon and lagna again, at a subtler level.
• The class has so far judged everything from lagna. PVNR: you can also look from the Sun at the mahādaśā level and mix the indications.
• How the two are combined: the bhoga house is always read from lagna. The house that becomes the focus — where the effort goes — is read from the placement and lordship of the period lord counted from that level's reference.
• Because the Moon (mind, perception) is the reference at the antardaśā level, arudha padas are very important in judging antardaśās. Whichever arudha the antardaśā lord or his bhoga touches is activated.

PVNR's correction to his own Vimshottari dates

• For the minute levels to work in his chart he has to shift the daśā dates by 1 day 4 hours 17 minutes (he subtracts it).
• He does not know why. His birth time satisfies him in all the vargas; only the daśās are off.
• One possibility he offers: we take the centre of the Moon's disc as the Moon's longitude, but the "spiritual centre" of the Moon may be slightly off it.
• Another: some say Vimshottari is 120 years and 5 days, not 120 years. His events fall between ages 25 and 33, about a quarter of the cycle, and about a quarter of 5 days is roughly a day. The correction may differ in another chart.
• Precedent: Sanjay Rath's grandfather Jagannath Rath rectified lagna and Moon separately, from events as small as which direction a man travelled that morning, and then made daily predictions with Vimshottari alone.

Worked on the day of the class (January 2, 2005)

Deha antardaśā — teaching the class. Rahu deha antardaśā in Jupiter prāṇa antardaśā, running over the hours of the class (6 AM to 2 PM in the published class notes).

• Chart: D-24 (Siddhamsa), because the matter is learning.
• From Jupiter, Rahu is in the 7th. The 7th from Rahu is Pisces, the 10th house of the D-24, with Jupiter in his own sign there. Bhoga in the 10th.
• The 10th is karma in society. A strong Siddhamsa makes a learned person; for the learning to go out into society the 10th of the Siddhamsa must work. With Pisces and a strong Jupiter in the 10th of his D-24, "whatever I learn, I will not keep quiet."
• Whenever bhoga at any level falls in that house, he may be teaching or spreading the knowledge.

Sūkṣma antardaśā — a family vacation. Mercury sūkṣma antardaśā in Jupiter pratyantardaśā, December 19 to January 5 (17 days). An 8-day family trip to the American Southwest fell in it.

• Rasi: Mercury is 7th from Jupiter; the 7th from Mercury is Libra, the 2nd house. Bhoga in the 2nd — resources, and being with the family. It is a Venusian house.
• From the Chara Ātmakāraka (his AK is the Moon, alone at 28°): Mercury is in the 3rd from the Moon. The 3rd shows initiative, siblings and travel. Travel is possible.
• D-16 shows the enjoyment (Part 9).
• D-10: Mercury is 5th from Jupiter; the 5th from Mercury is the lagna, where Saturn sits. Bhoga in lagna: a good time in career, no setbacks. Saturn in the bhoga house: some hard work, but he is in lagna, not the 6th or 8th — things had to be finished before leaving.
• A student reads bhoga in lagna as a new beginning. PVNR: say that only at the daśā or antardaśā level (a change of job or rank). At the sūkṣma level it recurs every few months; a new project at most.

Prāṇa antardaśā — the next three days. Saturn prāṇa antardaśā starts that afternoon.

• Bhoga falls in the 5th of the Dasamsa: recognition of ability.
• Reference for a prāṇa antardaśā is the Prāṇapada Lagna. From it, Saturn is lagna lord in the 8th: very hard work. (Saturn in the 8th from lagna in a natal chart means working hard throughout life.)
• He expects to work hard for three days preparing for the Consumer Electronics Show, because of the recognition.

Do not try this yet

• The lagna of the Dasamsa changes about every 10 minutes. The Prāṇapada Lagna changes sign in the Dasamsa every few seconds. The birth time must be accurate to seconds.
• Even with an accurate time the daśā dates can still be off.
• It took him several days of work on his own chart. He has not done it for anyone else's. At a Vimshottari workshop in Edison, New Jersey, the year before he showed 15 to 20 events of his life down to the deha antardaśā, including the hours of his wedding day.
• For now go only up to the pratyantardaśā.
