Addiction and Substance Indicators

Raised while reading 1.2.95 (Rahu and Gulika):

• Study the charts of drug addicts with Rahu and Gulika as the key.
• Saturn causes sorrow, and sorrow leads to drink.
• A student objected: his Saturn is strong and he does not touch alcohol. The teacher agreed. No single house does it — you can find twelve charts with Saturn in twelve houses.
• What matters is that Saturn afflicts the mind — the Moon. With a negative Saturn, alcoholism shows.
• With a positive, unafflicted Saturn the same contact is found in many saints: Saturn afflicting the Moon is one of the main factors for pravrajya.

"It has to cause shock and sorrow, and then the person will decide what to take, whether alcohol or God's name."

Scorpio Sign Nature

Students had picked up the idea that Scorpio is ice — cold and rigid. The teacher rejected it.

"Scorpio is a very passionate people and they are very vindictive. They are not ice cold."

• What is true is that it is hard to know what goes on inside a Scorpio-dominated person.
• Scorpio is ruled by Mars and Ketu, and both are guhya — secret. Another name of Kartikeya is Guha.
• Rahu digs like Varaha, brings things up and displays them to the world: research. Ketu does the opposite. It is smoke. Throw a smoke bomb at an attacker and you get time to escape.
• Both planets are experts at hiding — Mars at the lower level, Ketu at the highest. The terrorist is always in hiding.

The three water signs:

• Scorpio is one of the dirtiest places: any puddle infested with mosquitoes, water you would not want to drink.
• A student held that swamps and marshland belong to Capricorn. The teacher kept stagnant water with Scorpio.

Weekday Counting from the 10th of Navamsa

The rule (from the previous class): a planet in the 10th house of the Navamsa puts another planet's effect on the Navamsa lagna. Take the weekday order — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — followed by Rahu and Ketu, made cyclical. Start at the planet in the 10th and count to the 4th.

Mars in the 10th:

• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday → the effect of Venus on the lagna.
• Eye for detail, a perfectionist, no tolerance for inferior work.

Rahu in the 10th (a student's question):

• Rahu, Ketu, Sunday, Monday → the effect of the Moon on the lagna.
• This is why the classics say that with Rahu in the 10th the person goes on tirtha yatra, pilgrimage. The Moon is the planet of travel, and it is sattvic, so the travel is spiritual. Venus in that place would give travel for pleasure.

More than one planet in the 10th:

• Take all of them. The combined effect of the resulting planets is felt — miśre miśram, mixed planets give mixed results.
• The dasa running decides which one is promoted.
• If both Rahu's and Ketu's effects fall on the lagna, the person swings from one extreme to the other: from total materialist to spiritualist, or back.

No planet in the 10th: the rule does not apply.

It is read as the qualities of that planet sitting on the lagna. Its dignity or house in the actual chart does not come into it.

Chart Applications

The teacher prefers charts of people known to the class. With a stranger's chart you can only speculate, and the aim is to understand a concept.

Chart 1 — July 5, 1989, 14:07 IST (Libra Lagna, Pisces Navamsa Lagna)

A student, known to one of the class. Libra rises at about 20° with Pisces rising in the Navamsa.

Navamsa placements (Pisces lagna): Sun in the lagna; Jupiter in the 8th (Libra); Saturn in the 7th (Virgo); Moon, Mercury, Venus and Rahu in the 9th (Scorpio); Mars in the 10th (Sagittarius); Ketu in the 3rd (Taurus). Rahu is the Atmakaraka.

• Sun in the Navamsa lagna.
  • A strong Sun on the lagna already means he cannot be at poverty level.
  • A strong Sun gives a good sense of rhythm — playing instruments. A strong Moon gives singing. Confirmed: he does not sing, he plays instruments.
  • Sun in the 1st gives knowledge of the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita (1.2.113). Confirmed: he likes to read the Gita, and is a spiritual person.
  • The Sun is in Pisces, a friendly sign. Not everybody with the Sun in the lagna will take to the Gita.
• Four planets in the 9th in Scorpio.
  • Moon with Venus is not the problem. Mercury with Moon is not good for character, the Moon is debilitated, and the sign is Scorpio.

"You have to see the chart as a whole. But when I see a Scorpio afflicted like that, it will ring bells."

• Read as planets in a trine: Mercury → a Mimamsaka, a good student; Venus → poetry, a critic, eye for detail; Moon → singing, but debilitated, so it does not come; Rahu → big, abstract mathematics.
• Students pointed to the two lords joining in the 9th as a Raja Yoga. The teacher refused: these sutras do not use lordship.
• Mars in the 10th → by the weekday count, the effect of Venus on the lagna: a perfectionist with an eye for detail.
• Venus–Ketu parivartana (Venus in Scorpio, Ketu in Taurus) brings in Ketu's mathematics. With the Sun's light added, he should be good at physics.
• Rahu with Gulika. A student said Rahu is with Gulika. The teacher: Jaimini asks for the 4th or 5th, so it matters little here; were it to count, such a person would be a toxicologist.
• Lagna lord in the 8th (Jupiter). In the Navamsa this shows a person not interested in marrying, who has to be pushed into it by circumstances, and who tends to reject the spouse — the 7th is the 12th from the 8th.
• Mars and Saturn both aspect the Navamsa lagna (by graha and by rasi drishti). Saturn → a traditionalist. Mars → stubborn and hot-headed. A strong Saturn in the 7th is not bad in itself.

Khemadruma from Arudha Lagna (rasi chart):

• Arudha Lagna is Capricorn. Rahu is in the 2nd from it (Aquarius) and Ketu in the 8th (Leo). The Moon in Cancer aspects Rahu by rasi drishti. The combination for Khemadruma exists.
• But Rahu is in its own house, and it is friendly to the Arudha Lagna, which Saturn rules. So Rahu gives its yoga in its own nature — export-import kind of work — when its period comes.
• The teacher knows a similar chart, Rahu in the 2nd from Arudha Lagna: she did well in export-import.
• Had Rahu been weak and the Arudha Lagna ruled by a different planet, Rahu would have afflicted in earnest.

Example chart

The teacher put up the chart of a man he knows very well and asked the class to describe him. The time is tentative. It gives Aries lagna at about 18° with Virgo rising in the Navamsa.

Navamsa placements with Virgo lagna: Jupiter (retrograde) and Venus in the 2nd (Libra); Saturn in the 4th (Sagittarius); Mars in the 5th (Capricorn); Ketu in the 6th (Aquarius); Moon in the 7th (Pisces); Mercury in the 8th (Aries); Sun in the 11th (Cancer); Rahu in the 12th (Leo).

What the class read with Virgo Navamsa lagna:

• Mars exalted and vargottama in Capricorn, in a trine: logic, and an aggressive logic; hot-headed, assertive, no patience — the kind who wants to drive fast cars.
• Saturn and the Moon aspect the lagna (graha and rasi drishti both). Saturn → tradition, hard work, nervousness in front of others. Moon → compassion, interest in teaching, perhaps an author.
• Venus in the 2nd → speaker, poet, critic, since the sutras extend to the 2nd. A student added that Venus has argala on the lagna and is the 9th lord. The teacher: give no importance to lordship here; read the natural karakatva of the planet on the lagna.
• No planet in the 10th, so the weekday count does not apply. A student took the 10th lord Mercury in the 8th to mean poor finances; the teacher did not accept that. In Mercury's dasa he makes money. Saturn's dasa could be bad, since malefic Saturn aspects the 10th; the Moon's aspect on the 10th is the saving grace.

Saturn against Mars:

• These are contradicting influences. Which shows depends on the dasa.
• In the rasi chart Saturn is debilitated, so it is not strong, and Mars is. The man will not sit even five minutes in a prayer session.
• He will have to learn patience, and it will be hard.

"When a person is young, the person is likely to be impulsive and restless. When the person gets older… the natural Saturnian abilities will take over."

• This shows typically once the person crosses 36.

Which Navamsa lagna? — the assignment

Facts given: he is an astrologer who started at 14–16, self-taught, nobody teaching him. He loved mathematics and is very good with numbers. He plays no musical instrument. He is not married.

• The teacher's leaning: "Libra is more sensible."
• A student argued for Cancer: Ketu aspects that lagna as well, and the Sun shows Jyotish. The teacher: an aspect of Ketu is different from Ketu in the 5th. Self-taught means abhyasa, and that is the 5th.
• This is the method: apply the principles, ask the native, and if the picture does not fit, move the lagna and see whether the rest falls into place.
• the birthplace for next week: take the data, decide which Navamsa lagna you prefer, and give the reasons. Also work through the book's own examples before reading the author's analysis, and compare notes.
