Teaching — Ātmakāraka = Ahaṅkāra

The answer to the student's question in Part 2: why are other people seen from the Ātmakāraka?

All is Brahman

• In Vedānta there is no variety. Variety is perceived because the senses are there and the mind listens to them.
• "Soul" is an abstraction. What exists is consciousness perceiving the world, with an I-ness stamped on it.

"All consciousness is actually one, but a part of it has a particular I-ness stamped on it and it is seeing the world through a particular prism."

• Wife, father, mother are not separate existences at this level. They are notions held by the individualized consciousness, shaped by everything done with this I-ness in previous lives.

Ahaṅkāra

• Of the four parts of the antaḥkaraṇa — ahaṅkāra, buddhi, citta, manas — the Ātmakāraka is ahaṅkāra.

"Ahamkara, people somehow think it means pride. That is not the real meaning. That is the colloquial meaning today. Ahamkara means the sense of 'this is I', the definition of I."

• Buddhi (logical mind), citta (memory) and manas (sensory mind) are all controlled by ahaṅkāra. It is the base.
• This is a subtle mind above the ordinary one. In it sit notions such as "I came to do such a thing; I wanted it last life and did not do it." Thousands of such notions define the I.

Houses from Karakāṁśa

• The Ātmakāraka is the sense of "this is I". The houses from it are the rest of the universe as that I holds it: 7th the spouse, 9th the father.
• It is not your perception of the wife you see. It is the soul's sense of "this should be my spouse".
• These are aspirations. The soul aspires; it may or may not be given. What happens on the ground can differ.
• A man who died wanting to marry a rich person is born with that at the core of his I.
• Not every desire comes to fruition. The desires that have the karma to push them through are what the Ātmakāraka and the houses from it show.
• A strong 5th from Karakāṁśa: his sense of I is defined by knowledge. He values scholarship.

The last thought

• The last thought as consciousness leaves the body is the seed of the next life.
• Prithviraj Chauhan repelled the invader many times, was defeated, and was taken as a prisoner to the Afghanistan–Iran area, where he died. He ate their food and drank their water, so ṛṇas formed. Before they put out his eyes he saw their architecture and may have heard their music, and may have thought, "this is different, but this is also nice."
• By the vision of the yogi Vimalananda, he was born as Akbar, and his wife Samyukta as Jodha. The ṛṇa with the Rajputs remained too: Akbar was born and brought up in a Rajput house.
• From the yoga stories: a deer killed by a lion thinks at the last moment "I wish I were a lion" and is born a lion.

"Whatever you desire, if you have enough punya, enough karmas to actually get that, you will get that. That is shown by Atmakaraka. Atmakaraka is your aspirations, your sense of who you are or who you should be."

Teaching — Amātyakāraka = Sense of Purpose

A student asked what conscience is, and which planet rules it.

• Amātya means minister. The sense of purpose counsels the I-ness and guides every decision: not only who you are and what you are entitled to, but what you came for.
• The Amātyakāraka does not tell right from wrong. It tells what your job is. Jupiter tells right from wrong.
• Buddhi is shown by Amātyakāraka and Jupiter together. Conscience, the highest level of buddhi, is their combination: it knows right from wrong and sees it through the prism of your own dharma. The Ātmakāraka controls it too, as he controls everything in the chart.
• Everything that influences the Amātyakāraka and Jupiter colours the buddhi. The teacher's own Amātyakāraka is Mars, in Aries with Mercury and Saturn; all of that shapes how his Mars works.

"Without a minister, king cannot do much. So king comes with minister. A chart comes with Atmakaraka and Amatyakaraka, not just with Atmakaraka."

King and minister

• A weak minister who does not have the king's ear cannot carry out his agenda. The minister has the agenda, the king calls the shots.
• When the minister is strong, the king is only the one who puts the stamp.
• Judge the strength of both.

Said later, while reading the example chart:

• Amātyakāraka in a quadrant or trine from the Ātmakāraka is a good combination. The teacher names it Rājamaṇḍala yoga (the word is unclear in the recording). Check also whether the two are friends.
• When king and minister are on good terms, what the minister wants has a good chance of getting done. Then go by the Amātyakāraka; he matters more than the Ātmakāraka.
• If the Amātyakāraka is very weak, go by the Ātmakāraka. But a king who must do everything himself gets little done. Both strong is best.

6th from Amātyakāraka

• The 6th is the obstacles you overcome. The 6th from Amātyakāraka is the obstacles overcome to fulfil your purpose.
• Parāśara, listing the deities to be seen from planets, gives two together: the 12th from Ātmakāraka and the 6th from Amātyakāraka. He gives them no names; the names in use are from our generation. He speaks of both in the context of becoming free — mokṣa, sāyujya.
• 12th from Ātmakāraka = giving up the sense of "this is I".

"Even if you write a thousand million times, I am Brahman, I am Brahman, you will not become Brahman. You will still be your Narasimha, because maybe this Narasimha wants to do something. Until he actually does it, he will be blocked from realizing his true nature."

• Some desires must be fulfilled first. The purpose may be small or large: a temple promised long ago, a hospital in the native town. Until it is done you are not free.
• So for some people the 6th from Amātyakāraka matters more than the 12th from Ātmakāraka. Finishing that work may not give mokṣa, but it can give a big spiritual push.
