BPHS Ch.34 Sagittarius/Capricorn/Aquarius/Pisces: Sag=Sun+Mars Benefic+Saturn Maraka; Cap=Venus Yogakaraka+Moon Malefic(Karka=Lord=Extreme Desire); Aqu=Venus Yogakaraka+Moon 6L Worst Malefic; Pisces=Mars+Jupiter Raj Yoga+Mars Won't Kill; Three House Categories: Trikona=Lakshmi Blessings, Kendra=Vishnu Effort, 3/6/11=Struggle; Closing: Yogas Override Base Classification

Sagittarius lagna: Venus (6L+11L) = only functional malefic (doubly malefic); Mars (5L+12L) = benefic (5L trikona primary); Sun (9L) = clear benefic (pure trikona lord); Jupiter (1L+4L) = neutral (Kendrajatva reduces lagna lord benefit); Saturn = primary Maraka (2L+3L; "nihanta bhaskarat malaha = clearly Saturn is Maraka"); Sun+Mercury = Raj Yoga pair (9L+10L). Capricorn lagna: Venus (5L+10L) = Yogakaraka (trikona+kendra); Mercury (6L+9L) = qualified benefic (friend of Saturn tips toward benefic); Moon (7L) = malefic — special teaching: "Moon is the karaka of 7th house (desires); when karaka ALSO owns that same house, results are maximal to the point of extremity; Moon as 7th lord = overwhelmingly strong desires = malefic quality"; Mars (4L+11L) = malefic (11L dominates); Jupiter (3L+12L) = malefic (3L dominates); Saturn (1L+2L) = "not a killer by himself; lagna lordship protects." Aquarius lagna: Venus (4L+9L) = Yogakaraka (classic kendra+trikona); Moon (6L) = worst malefic (unambiguous); Jupiter (2L+11L) = malefic (11L + enemy of Saturn); Mars (3L+10L) = malefic (3L dominates). Pisces lagna: Mars (2L+9L) = benefic (9L primary); Moon (5L) = clear benefic; Jupiter (1L+10L) = neutral; Saturn (11L+12L) = malefic + primary killer; Mercury (4L+7L) = malefic (double Kendra = maximum Kendrajatva; also can kill as 7th lord); Mars+Jupiter = Raj Yoga pair (9L+10L, friends); special: "Mars as 2nd lord is technical Maraka but won't kill — benefic + friend of lagna lord protects him from killing function." Three house categories: Trikona (1/5/9) = Lakshmi sthanas (blessings come from past punya, no effort needed); Kendra (4/7/10) = Vishnu sthanas (effort required but flows; neither blessing nor struggle); 3/6/11 = struggle houses ("you must work hard, fight, desire intensely — even when the end result is good, the process is malefic"). Closing: "Parashara says: other yogas in coming chapters can MODIFY or OVERRIDE this house-based classification; you must combine both frameworks."

"Why is Moon as 7th lord malefic for Capricorn? Moon is the karaka of the 7th house — it is the significator of desires, of mind, of attachment. If Moon also OWNS the 7th house, it gives those results maximally, to the point of extremity. The person has overwhelmingly strong desires and attachments. That excessive desire-energy is malefic — not because the desires are bad, but because the energy itself is restless and unsatisfied. The karka owning the same house it signifies — this is a principle Parashara applies throughout."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Sagittarius Lagna

Sanskrit: "Yeka yeva kavihi papaha... bhau ma divakara bhau... yogobhaskara somyabhama... nihanta bhaskarat malaha"

Lagna: Sagittarius (Dhanu)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Venus6th + 11thOnly maleficBoth 6th and 11th = malefic houses; clear double malefic
Mars5th + 12thBenefic5th = trikona (Lakshmi sthana = excellent); 12th = vyaya (takes shade of other house → 5th); overall benefic
Sun9thClear beneficPure 9th lord = trikona = unqualified benefic; "he owns only 9th, so he is a clear benefic"
Jupiter1st + 4thNeutralLagna lord = benefic; 4th = kendra (Kendrajatva dosha for benefic); net = neutral; "lagna lord benefits, 4th Kendrajatva reduces it"
Saturn2nd + 3rdMalefic (conditional)3rd = malefic; 2nd = Maraka (neutral-conditional); Parashara didn't specifically mention him as Papa, so he is less-explicitly malefic; but 3rd lordship tends toward malefic
MoonBy sahacharaNot mentioned; based on company
Mercury10th + 7thBy sahacharaNot specifically mentioned

Raj Yoga pair: Sun + Mercury

  • "Yogobhaskara somyabhama" = yoga given by Sun and Mercury → 9th + 10th lords = Raj Yoga for Sagittarius

Maraka: Saturn

  • "Nihanta bhaskarat malaha" = "clearly marka is Saturn"
  • Saturn = 2nd lord (Maraka) + 3rd lord (vitality); owning both the house of vitality (3rd) and Maraka house (2nd) → primary killer

Venus can also kill: As 6th lord (functional malefic) + enemy of lagna lord, if Venus is in the 7th house or associated with Maraka houses, he can also function as a Maraka

  • "Malefics who are associated with 2nd and 7th houses become killers — this applies to functional malefics"

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Capricorn Lagna

Sanskrit: "Kavya rekha... kuja jivendra vaas papaha. Shubhau bhargava chandrajau. Mandraswayam nahantasyat. Kaviraya kaha yoga pruth."

Lagna: Capricorn (Makara)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Mars4th + 11thMalefic11th = always malefic; 4th = neutral for malefic planet; 11th dominates → malefic
Jupiter3rd + 12thMalefic3rd = malefic; 12th = depends on other house (3rd); 3rd lord status dominates → malefic
Moon7thMalefic7th lord → see special teaching below; Moon = karaka of 7th + lord of 7th = doubly desire-oriented = malefic
Venus5th + 10thYogakaraka5th = trikona (excellent); 10th = kendra (Kendrajatva, but 5th overrides); Yogakaraka
Mercury6th + 9thBenefic (qualified)9th = trikona (benefic); 6th = malefic; friend of Saturn (lagna lord) → friendship tips balance toward benefic
Saturn1st + 2ndNot a Maraka by himselfLagna lord = benefic; 2nd = Maraka; but "Saturn himself is not a killer" — lagna lordship protects
Sun8thNeutral8th lord → see other house (none for Sun); enemy of Saturn; even with benefics unlikely to become benefic → neutral at best

Yogakaraka: Venus alone

  • "Kaviraya kaha yoga pruth" = Venus alone is the Yogakaraka
  • Mercury-Venus yoga NOT the primary Raj Yoga for Capricorn because: Mercury owns 6th (malefic house); 6th lord + 10th lord together = Duryoga (not Rajyoga); "6th lord + 10th lord together is not a clean Raj Yoga — it is tainted"
  • Why Mercury-Venus yoga weaker: "If 6th lord is with any quadrant/trikona lord, it is actually a Duryoga, not Raj Yoga"

Maraka determination:

  • "Mandraswayam nahantasyat" = Saturn himself won't kill; as lagna lord he protects
  • "Hanti papa kujada yaha" = Mars, Moon, and Jupiter (functional malefics) can kill when associated with 2nd/7th houses
  • Saturn may kill only when with a planet that associates him with Maraka houses

Special Teaching: Why Moon as 7th Lord = Malefic (Karka-Owns-Same-House Principle)

Question: Why is Moon malefic for Capricorn (7th lord) when 7th lordship is "ambiguous" for most planets?

PVNR's answer:

"Moon is the karaka (significator) of 7th house — it is the karaka of desires. Moon represents mind, and mind is where all desires are rooted. If Moon (karaka of desires) also OWNS the 7th house (house of desires), he will make your desires very, very strong — overwhelmingly so. When you have such strong attachment and desire, you are basically in a state of 3rd/11th house energy — striving, attached, suffering. That is why Moon as 7th lord = malefic."

— PVNR

General principle:

  • "When a planet is the KARAKA of a house AND also the LORD of that same house, it gives those house results VERY STRONGLY — sometimes to the point of extremity"
  • Moon as 7th lord: extreme attachment, excessive desire → creates suffering → malefic quality
  • Same principle: Jupiter as 5th lord (also karaka of 5th) → extremely strong 5th house results (good in this case because 5th = trikona = blessing)

Teaching: Three Categories of Houses

"Let me explain why 3/6/11 are malefics, Kendras are neither, and Trines are benefics."

— PVNR
House GroupCategoryMechanismResult
Trikonas (1,5,9)Houses of Blessings (Lakshmi sthanas)Things come to you from past life punya; no effort neededBenefic (planet gives freely)
Kendras (4,7,10)Houses of Effort (Vishnu sthanas)Requires effort; things don't come freely but not a struggleNeutral (neither free blessing nor suffering)
3, 6, 11Houses of StrugglePassionate drive, fighting obstacles, fulfilling desires — you MUST work hardMalefic (planet creates effort/struggle)
2, 8, 12Separate category8th = sudden changes (ups and downs); 2nd = resource management; 12th = how you give/releaseMixed/associationist

Teaching on Vishnu vs. Lakshmi houses:

  • Vishnu sthanas (Kendras) = houses of effort, doing; Vishnu is the sustainer who maintains through action
  • Lakshmi sthanas (Trikonas) = houses of blessings; Lakshmi brings prosperity without requiring the person to struggle
  • "In Vishnu sthanas you work but it flows; in Lakshmi sthanas it comes as blessing; in 3/6/11 you struggle and fight"

Why 11th house = malefic despite being "gains":

"11th house is gains — you get what you wanted. But to get what you want, you had to have passion for it, you had to charge yourself up. Getting what you wanted involves effort. The planet responsible for giving you your desires has to make you charged up to get them — it doesn't let you relax. That energy is malefic (struggle-generating), even though the end result may be good."

— PVNR

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Aquarius Lagna

Sanskrit: "Jeevachandra kujaha papaha. Sukra surya atmajau suvhau. Rajayoga karo gneyaha kavir eva brahma spatihi. Brahma spatihi sau suryo bhau maste hamtaro."

Lagna: Aquarius (Kumbha)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Jupiter2nd + 11thMalefic11th = always malefic; 2nd = neutral-conditional; 11th dominates; also enemy of Saturn (lagna lord)
Moon6thMalefic6th lord = always malefic; unambiguous
Mars3rd + 10thMalefic3rd = malefic; 10th = neutral for malefic; 3rd dominates → malefic; also enemy of Saturn
Venus4th + 9thYogakaraka4th = kendra + 9th = trikona = classic Yogakaraka (kendra+trikona lord)
Saturn1st + 12thBeneficLagna lord = benefic; 12th = depends on other house (lagna = benefic) → overall benefic; "unless badly afflicted by malefic that acts more as 12th lord"
Mercury5th + 8thNeutral-to-benefic5th = trikona (good); 8th = associationist; 5th ensures minimum neutral; if well-associated → benefic
Sun7thBy context7th lord = Maraka for service; enemy of Saturn

Yogakaraka: Venus alone

  • "Rajayoga karo gneyaha kavir eva" = only Venus is known to give Raj Yoga
  • Venus-Mars yoga not great: 9th+10th lords are enemies; Mars is functional malefic → tainted yoga
  • "Only Venus gives clean Raj Yoga because he is the Yogakaraka"

Killers: Jupiter (2nd lord + enemy), Sun (7th lord + enemy), Mars (3rd lord + enemy of Saturn)

  • Mars as killer: 3rd lord = vitality; 3rd = house of vitality; if 3rd lord (vitality giver) is an enemy of lagna lord, they can give trouble with vitality/longevity
  • "Because he is a malefic associated with the house of vitality, and moreover an enemy of the lagna lord, he may give problems"

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Pisces Lagna

Sanskrit: "Mandraśukram... saumyaaha papaha bhaumavidhu suvhau. Mahisutha Guru yoga kara kauchemahisutha. Marako pina hantaso mandagnao marako..."

Lagna: Pisces (Meena)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Saturn11th + 12thMalefic11th = always malefic; 12th = depends (but with 11th tainting = malefic); enemy of Jupiter
Venus3rd + 8thMalefic3rd = malefic; 8th = conditional; enemy of Jupiter → overall malefic
Sun6thMalefic6th lord = always malefic; despite being friend of Jupiter
Mercury4th + 7thMalefic (Kendrajatva)Owns 2 kendras (4th + 7th) = maximum Kendrajatva dosha; no trikona → malefic or at best neutral
Moon5thBenefic5th lord = pure trikona = clear benefic
Mars2nd + 9thBenefic (primary benefic)9th = trikona (excellent); 2nd = Maraka (conditional); 9th overrides → benefic; Mars is friend of Jupiter
Jupiter1st + 10thNeutral/slightly beneficLagna lord = benefic; 10th = kendra (Kendrajatva reduces); Parashara doesn't mention as benefic or malefic explicitly → neutral

Yogakaraka pair: Mars + Jupiter

  • "Mahistha guru yogakaraka kauchemahisutha" = Mars and Jupiter will give Raj Yoga
  • Why: Mars = 9th lord (trikona), Jupiter = 10th lord (kendra); both friends; both on the benefic side
  • "They will give a Raj Yoga because they are friends and both are benefics in their own way"

Special rule: Mars = Maraka but won't kill:

  • "Mahi sutaha marakopi nahantaso" = Mars, though technically a Maraka (2nd lord), HE DOESN'T KILL
  • Why: Mars is a benefic and a friend of Jupiter (lagna lord); though 2nd lord = theoretical Maraka, beneficence + friendship prevents actual killing
  • "You can call him killer, but he doesn't really kill"

Killers: Saturn and Mercury

  • Saturn: functional malefic + enemy of Jupiter + 7th lord association = can kill
  • Mercury: 7th lord (Maraka) = can kill when associated with Maraka houses
  • "Mandagnao marakau" = Saturn and Mercury are the Maraka planets for Pisces

BPHS Ch.34 — Closing Verses (Parashara's Summary)

Sanskrit: "Yevam bhavaan vipatena jnamma lagna vacharih. Subha asubham cha grahanaam pratipaaditam. Anyaana pi punar yogaan nava yogaan vishinchevayi. Dehinaam cha phalam vachham pravakshyam iti danaham."

Translation: "Like this, based on house ownership from the birth lagna, the beneficence and maleficence of planets is established. But OTHER YOGAS also — the various yogas I will mention in the next chapters — considering THOSE also, the results for living beings should be spoken. I will tell you those yogas now."

PVNR commentary:

"Parashara is clearly saying here: what I just told you (this chapter's lagna-based benefic/malefic rules) is the generic foundational framework. But the yogas mentioned in the next chapters can MODIFY or OVERRIDE these determinations. You must combine both frameworks — the house-based determination AND the yoga-based results — to give proper readings."

— PVNR

Key implication: This is not a static lookup table. House ownership determines tendency; yogas formed by planets can enhance or suppress those tendencies:

  • A malefic planet forming a powerful yoga may give great results
  • A benefic planet ruined by its yoga association may fail to help
