Curses from Past Life (from Book 1 Notes, pp. 76–77)

This was not taught in this class. The class of Lesson 18 has no discussion of curses. In Book 1 these notes are the last items (50–62) of Lesson 17's list, printed on p. 76, the page where Lesson 18 begins. PVNR taught the material at the end of the previous class, on the chart of that class, not on the Virgo-lagna chart above. It is kept here because of where the book prints it.

When to Look

When someone is laid off or stuck for a long time, check whether a curse from a past life has recently become active. If one has, the trouble may last longer than the other charts suggest. Use Moola daśā.

The Curses

Affliction means occupation or graha dṛṣṭi by Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu. Rāśi dṛṣṭi is not counted here.

• All three — kāraka, house and lord — must be afflicted. The yoga is strong when at least the kāraka is afflicted by two malefics. One malefic gives a weak yoga.
• Activation: if the Moola daśā of the planet giving the curse is running, the curse "is sitting on your head."

What the Afflicting Planet Says

• Mars: the person cursed in anger.
• Saturn: in sorrow.
• Rahu or Ketu: in shock; he felt deceived, let down.

A Curse Is Karma

"Curse doesn't have to be something that is delivered verbally. If you are mean to your wife and your wife is unhappy with you, but she doesn't say a word and she goes through suffering, that becomes a curse in the next life."

Not the Maharṣi of the films throwing water. Whatever you do to others, you experience its fruit.

Application (the Previous Class's Chart)

• Wife's curse: none. Saturn aspects Venus, but the 7th house is not afflicted.
• Mother's curse: none. Mars aspects the 4th house and Saturn is with the 4th lord Jupiter, but Moon is not afflicted.
• Father's curse: weak. Sun, the 9th lord and the 9th house are all with Rahu, but Rahu is only one planet. Neither Saturn nor Mars aspects the Sun, so the father was neither sad nor angry; with Rahu, he felt cheated. If it bore fruit at all it was in the native's boyhood (1967–1979). Had Saturn also afflicted the Sun it would certainly have borne fruit.
• Brāhmaṇa śāpa: none. Jupiter is with Saturn but no second malefic afflicts him.
• No curse was running. Nothing from past karma was holding him back.

The Karma a Planet Carries: Shashtyamsha

• The Moola daśā running was Saturn's (1998–2016). Moola means root: it shows the root cause of what is happening.
• See the planet's Ṣaṣṭyāṁśa (D-60). Saturn was in Chandra Rekhā aṁśa, a benefic one. But it is the line of the Moon, not the full Moon: awareness of being incomplete and the aspiration to become full. A period of strong desire and of working toward it, without obstacles.
• By contrast Mars in that chart was in Kulaghna aṁśa: destruction of the family line. His daśā brings bad events in the family.
• If a curse is running — PVNR knew a man with a Sarpa yoga who was out of work for two and a half years in that planet's Moola daśā — advise remedies for that particular śāpa.

Key Principles Summarized

Birth Time Rectification

1. Ask how accurate the time is and who recorded it.
2. If there is a question, the chart of that matter must be right. Otherwise find the divisional chart whose lagna is nearest a border within the stated error.
3. Start with the higher charts (D-9, D-3, D-10) where only two or three lagnas are possible. Go to the finer ones later.
4. Test each candidate lagna against known events: marriage, siblings, children, career.
5. Do not conclude from one factor. Note what is more and less possible, then check with other daśās, Tithi Praveśa and transits.
6. Each technique that agrees raises your faith in the chart. It can also expose a wrong chart.

Dashas

• Vimshottari is based on Moon and shows the mental outlook. Good, not always perfect.
• Narayana daśā is of signs and shows what happens on the ground.
• An event happens because several daśās point to the same thing.
• Be relaxed in judging the mahādaśā and strict in judging the antardaśā.
• For marriage see the 7th from Venus as well as the 7th from lagna.
• In Tithi Praveśa, a planet in a trine or quadrant from the ruler of the year gets its agenda done. The natal chart takes precedence over the annual chart.

Relations in D-3 and D-7

• Rahu or Ketu met in the sequence ends it. Rahu in the sign itself: that one comes and is the last.
• Jupiter in a friendly sign, aspecting the sign beyond Rahu or connected with its lord, gives one more.
• Always ask about miscarriages. One shifts the whole sequence by a step.
• Sex from the sign: odd male, even female; Gemini female, Cancer male, Aquarius female, Pisces male. It works well in D-7 and less reliably in D-3.
• Of two co-lords (Saturn/Rahu, Mars/Ketu) the stronger is the one with more planets; failing that, the one with more of Mercury, Jupiter and its dispositor conjoined or aspecting by rāśi dṛṣṭi.
• In Saptāṁśa judge from the signs; the ārūḍhas matter less there.
• You see the relative's life as it is from the native's side. What he has no awareness of is unlikely to show.

Placements

• Sun in the 9th: idealistic, forces principles on others.
• Planets in the 6th: a service-based career.
• Mercury in the 8th: a good placement; widely read.
• Saturn or Rahu in the 9th: follows custom but questions belief.
• Ketu alone in lagna: headless, will not listen. Ketu with Jupiter: Jupiter's head.
• Rahu in the 3rd: argues and wants to convince.
• Lagna lord in the 9th: his own boss.
• Saturn in the 4th: sukha lopa. Ketu in the 8th: long life with constant unexplained ailments.
• Bādhakasthāna: 11th for movable, 9th for fixed, 7th for dual lagnas. Inexplicable troubles.
• The 7th is māraka to service (2nd from the 6th); so is the 12th (7th from the 6th).

D-10

1. Lagna: what he is at work. Ārūḍha Lagna: the image colleagues have.
2. See whether the 6th (service) or the 7th (business) is stronger.
3. The Dikpāla aṁśa of the planets that control the career gives the nature of the work.
4. Debilitated planets in D-10: patient hard work. Exalted planets: good when things come easily.
