Tribhagi Vimshottari Deep Philosophy — Nakshatra as Pranavayu & 3 Gunas

Core difference: Standard Vimshottari = how the mind experiences things (planet-centric); Tribhagi = what life force drives the mind, why the mind feels a certain way (nakshatra-centric). Nakshatra = a specific station of Pranavayu (vital life force) — as Moon progresses through nakshatras, the mind takes the energy of each station. Even Rahu nakshatras differ totally: Ardra (Rudra = fiery, dynamic), Swati (Vayu = airy), Shatabhisha (Varuna = watery) — different life force qualities despite same planet lord. Punarvasu (Aditi) = all good qualities naturally flourish; Shravana (Vishnu) = very auspicious; Ardra = powerful but unstable fire. The 3 nakshatras of each planet represent its sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic expressions. Don't reconcile conflicting dasha signals — understand what each system specifically shows. Three dasha systems together: Vimshottari (mental experiences) + Tribhagi (life force state) + Narayana (circumstances on the ground).

"Even though Ardra, Swati, and Shatabhisha are all Rahu nakshatras, they are totally different. The nature of the life force is totally different. Tribhagi shows this difference clearly."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Nakshatra Sutras Continued

Continuing from Lesson 63 — reading two more nakshatra mantras:

NakshatraDeityNote
Mrigashirsha (Mrigashirshe/Nogasira)Soma (Moon deity)"Mriga = deer; Shirsha/Sira = head; Deer's head"
ArdraRudra (a form of Shiva; fiery god)"Symbolizes fire in the world; very dynamic and energetic"
PunarvasuAditi"Mother of all the devatas; from whom all good qualities are born"

Next class: Mrigashirsha and Ardra done today; next = Pushyami

Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha — Deep Philosophy

Nakshatra as Life Force (Pranavayu)

Core teaching:

  • Nakshatra = a specific station of Pranavayu (life force/vital air)
  • Moon = mind; as Moon is progressed through nakshatras, mind takes the energy of each nakshatra's station
  • Different nakshatras = totally different qualities of life force (even if ruled by same planet in Vimshottari)
  • "Even though Ardra, Swati, and Shatabhisha are all Rahu nakshatras, they are totally different — the nature of the life force is totally different"

Examples of nakshatra life-force quality:

  • Ardra (Rudra): Fiery, dynamic, can be unstable or powerfully energetic; lot of fire and energy moving the mind
  • Punarvasu (Aditi): Very auspicious; mind filled with all good qualities; relaxed, compassionate; all good qualities naturally flourish — "She is that principle from which all good qualities within you are born"
  • Shravana (Vishnu): Very auspicious (Lord Vishnu = sustainer)
  • Mrigashirsha (Soma): Lunar, nourishing quality

Why Tribhagi Gives Better Nakshatra Insight

  • Normal Vimshottari: each planet's dasha bundles 3 nakshatras together — you lose the specific nuance of which nakshatra is active
  • Tribhagi: each nakshatra gets its own dedicated period
  • "In normal Vimshottari, even though it is a nakshatra dasha, the focus is not on nakshatra but on Moon's progression. In Tribhagi, each nakshatra is individually delineated."
  • PVNR: "Pay more attention to nakshatras in Tribhagi, not to the planet. Planets are secondary here."

The Three Gunas and Trine Nakshatras

  • Each planet's 3 nakshatras (120° apart) represent the 3 gunas:
    • One = Sattvic quality of that life force
    • One = Rajasic quality
    • One = Tamasic quality
  • "Whatever is driving your mind, if mind is not above guna, it takes the nature of one of the three gunas — sattva, rajas, or tamas"
  • Tribhagi shows which specific guna expression of the life force is active at any given time

What Each Dasha System Shows (Summary)

DashaPerspective
VimshottariWhat is the mind experiencing? How does the mind feel?
Tribhagi VimshottariWhat is the state of mind? What life force is driving the mind? Why does mind feel a certain way?
Narayana DashaWhat is happening on the ground (circumstances)? What is the ultimate reality?

PVNR's key principle: "These dashas are NOT alternatives — they are different perspectives of the same reality. Combine them. Don't just pick one."

How to Use Tribhagi Vimshottari Dasha

Step-by-Step

  1. Find the current Tribhagi dasha nakshatra (from JH software: Dasas → Vimshottari → Tribhagi variation)
  2. Focus on that nakshatra specifically, not just the planet ruling it
  3. Look at what is in that nakshatra in the natal chart:
    • Any planets?
    • Any sahamas (event points)?
    • Any special lagnas?
  4. Look at what is transiting that nakshatra right now:
    • "Whichever planets are in that nakshatra right now, or aspecting it by nakshatra drishti or rasi drishti, will naturally have an influence on mental state"
  5. Combine natal + transit understanding of the nakshatra

Best Application

  • PVNR: "The most useful application I have found for this dasha is in mundane charts"
  • Specifically: Kartika Shukla Pratipada chart (day after Deepavali) = used for stock market prediction
  • "I taught at Akshaya Vidya Gurukulam — using Tribhagi with Kartika chart to predict stock market for next year"
  • Also applicable to annual charts in general, but PVNR's experience is mainly in mundane

Using with Transits

  • Look at transiting planets in the active nakshatra right now
  • Example: "I am running Rahu-Ardra Tribhagi dasha. Look at Ardra. What planets are transiting Ardra right now? Those will influence my mind."
  • Combines beautifully: Tribhagi shows the station; transit shows the current influences on that station

Reconciling Conflicting Factors — Fundamental Principle

Question asked: If Vimshottari shows one thing and Tribhagi shows another, how do you reconcile?

Answer: "99% of the time when people ask 'how do you reconcile two factors,' the answer is you don't reconcile — you understand exactly what each one shows."

  • First understand: What exactly is this factor? What exactly is that factor?
  • Are they showing the same thing? If not, no conflict exists
  • "Just like Sheshu and Narasimha are different people but same Paramatma — they are not contradictory"
  • "Lagna and Moon are not alternatives. They are different aspects of the same reality."
