Charakaraka Replacement, AK Sign & Ishta Devata

What happens when a planet that was AK changes degree — charakaraka replacement rules. Reading the AK sign in Navamsa to find the soul's deepest tendencies. Ishta Devata (12th from AK in Navamsa) vs Dharma Devata (12th from AmK in Navamsa) — two different deities for two different purposes. Physical characteristics as a lagna verification tool.

"When charakaraka changes in life from one planet to another planet, all the dynamics also change."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Charakarka Replacement

When Two Planets Share the Same Degree

When two planets are at the exact same longitude (same degree), the one with the slightly higher longitude (or by convention, the "higher" one) becomes the karaka, and the other fills the next position.

Example from class (Kiran's chart):

  • Mars: 25°7' → Atmakaraka (AK)
  • Venus: 25°10' → Amatyakaraka (AmK)

These are almost equal. Eventually in life, Mars "steps down" and Venus takes the AK position.

"When charakarka changes in life from one planet to another planet, all the dynamics also changes."

— PVNR

How Atmakaraka Replacement Works

  • During life, at a certain point, the original AK (Mars) is "displaced" from the AK role
  • The next planet (Venus) becomes AK
  • The former AmK slot is now empty → some other planet fills it
  • This marks a spiritual transformation in the native's life

Practical reading note: PVNR was taught by his guru to always take the original AK for Ishta Devata, karakamsha, etc. — even if replacement has occurred.

"Even if there is a replacement, you see from the original Atmakaraka only. That is what I was taught."

— PVNR

AK Sign Analysis

When reading AK in the Rashi or Navamsa chart, the sign it occupies tells you what kind of soul it is at that stage.

AK SignNature of Soul's Focus
TaurusPractical, duty-bound, works hard; "once I have done the puja, I'm done"
AquariusPhilosopher; keeps pondering, no end to thinking; seeks universal mystery
LibraFocused on harmony, balance, diplomacy in society

Kiran's chart (Mars AK in Taurus — childhood):

  • "You just do with a sense of duty. Whether it is puja, meditation, whatever. You do it, and you are done with it."

Kiran's chart (Venus AK in Aquarius — after replacement):

  • Philosopher soul awakened; constant pondering; pain because Venus is in 6H (dushtana) AND combusted by Sun
  • Saturn + Rahu have Argala on Venus from Aquarius → tussle between discipline/tapasya (Saturn) and material luxury (Rahu)

"Between Saturn and Rahu, there is a tussle. You want to be like a yogi, at the same time you want a luxurious life. Once one of them wins, direction would be found."

— PVNR

AK Combusted by Sun

  • Venus combust by Sun when they are together → painful, unpleasant experience
  • But Sun = Vishwatma (universal soul) → the individual soul (Venus) can access light from the universal soul
  • However: Venus and Sun are enemies → the process is painful

"Your soul gets light from the Paramatma, from the universal soul. Your individual soul, Venus, can get some light from the universal soul by pondering. But it's a painful process because of the combustion as well as the 6th house placement."

— PVNR

Ishta Devata & Dharma Devata

Ishta Devata (12th from AK in Navamsa)

(Continuation from Lesson 15 and 16)

  • 12th from AK in Navamsa = what the soul is willing to give up its identity through = path to Moksha
  • If there is a planet in that house → that planet's deity is the Ishta Devata
  • If no planet, look at the lord of that sign
  • If lagna is in 12th from AK → very saintly; person willing to give up entire personality/ego

"If lagna is in the 12th from Atmakaraka, that means your atma is willing to give up your entire existence. That is the nature of a self-realized person or a saint."

— PVNR

Dharma Devata (9th from AK in Navamsa)

NEW principle introduced in this lesson:

  • 9th from AK in Navamsa = the dharma that the soul needs to discharge
  • Look at planets in that sign → if empty, look at the lord
  • This is the Dharma Devata — the deity who helps the soul fulfill its karmic duties

Example from student's chart (Scorpio Navamsa lagna, Sun AK):

  • 12th from Sun (AK) contains Ketu + Mars → Mars aspected by Mercury
  • Mars conjunct Mercury → Mercury shows Vishnu → Narasimha (Mars + Vishnu combination)
  • Ketu in 12th from AK also there → Ganesha or Lalita (Ketu with Moon in Venus sign → Parvati/Lalita)
  • Mars also links to 9th from AK → Narasimha is recommended for both moksha and dharmic duties

"If he prays to Narasimha, it will help his soul fulfill its unfulfilled duties and get more detachment from the worldly things."

— PVNR

Note on other deities: Praying to any deity with a sattvic attitude will lead in the right direction. The chart just identifies which deity will accelerate the progress.

Physical Characteristics and Lagna

PVNR uses physical appearance to help confirm lagna when birth time is uncertain.

"Look at somebody's face. Based on physical characteristics, you can rule out certain lagnas."

— PVNR
