Follow-up — Drekkanas and Body Parts

The class opens with a student's question on the previous lesson, where Parashara maps body parts to the drekkanas of the twelve houses. Several interpretations had been given and the students were asked to test them on charts. PVNR gives no verdict.

"I asked you to experiment and then give me your conclusion. I did not want to conclude it myself."

What was clarified

• All the interpretations given are centred on the lagna.
• You do not test each house separately for its drekkana. If lagna is at 15°, the cusp of the 2nd house is at 15° of the next sign, and so on. If lagna is in the 1st drekkana, every house cusp is in its 1st drekkana.
• One of the interpretations: with lagna at 15° Taurus, 10°–20° Taurus is the first set (head, etc.), the same degrees of Gemini show the right eye, and so on.
• A planet such as Rahu placed in a drekkana natally, or transiting it, can give results for the body part of that drekkana.
• Where a body part is in the middle of the body (the back), Parashara split the middle in two; a planet at the centre could show either side.

A student's example — hearing loss

• A chart with Cancer lagna (1st or 2nd drekkana) and complete hearing loss from a nerve problem. The earlier reading: 11th lord Venus in the 6th house; the 11th house shows the ears.
• In the drekkana scheme one drekkana of the 3rd house shows the right ear and one drekkana of the 11th shows the left ear. The student found Mars in the 3rd house but not in the matching drekkana.
• PVNR did not settle it: bring the chart, analyse more, then draw conclusions.

How to test it

• Look at which planet occupies the drekkana and which planet aspects it.
• Example: Mars as 8th lord in the 3rd drekkana of the 8th house aspects the 11th, 2nd and 3rd houses (graha dṛṣṭi), and so the 3rd drekkana of each of them.
• See whether the 6th lord, the 8th lord or the bādhakeśa links to that drekkana, in the natal chart or in transit.
• Rāśi chart only. The body is seen from the rāśi chart, not navāṁśa or daśāṁśa.

BPHS Dhanabhava — Verses 12–13 (Eyes, Truthful Speech)

Verse 12: 2nd Lord Strong → Beautiful Eyes; in a Dusthana → Defective Eyes

"Netreshe balasamyukte shobhanaksho bhaven narah, shashthashtama-vyayasthe cha netra-vaikalyavan bhavet"

• 2nd lord endowed with strength (balasamyukte) → shobhanaksha, he or she has beautiful eyes.
• 2nd lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th → netra-vaikalya: eyes weak, malformed or not beautiful.

Why the 2nd lord: he is not only for resources and their use. "Eyes also are a resource, a resource with which you see the world."

Houses for the eyes: a student pointed to the previous chapter, where the 2nd house is the eye. That is the drekkana scheme specifically. By houses in general, the 2nd and 12th show the eyes: the 2nd is the main controller, and the left eye can sometimes be seen from the 12th.

So far the chapter has covered resources, sharing them with others, and now the eyes — all from the 2nd house.

Verse 13: 2nd Lord and 2nd House Both with Malefics → Liar, Vata Disease

"Dhaneshe papasamyukte, dhane papasamanvite, pishuno'satyavadi cha, vatavyadhi-samanvitah"

• 2nd lord conjoined by malefics and the 2nd house occupied by malefics.

Results:

1. Pishuna — PVNR did not know the word. Santhanam gives "tale-bearer", which he did not know either; the class guessed "one who makes up stories". He said he would look up the root. Left open.
2. Asatyavadi — a liar. "Stay away from the person."
3. Vatavyadhi-samanvita — afflicted by vāta diseases (Ayurveda's kapha, pitta, vāta), the windy kind. Samanvita is normally a positive word; here it is used negatively.

The 2nd house, summed up: your resources and sharing them; gains and how well you spend; your eyes — "not vision, just eyes"; and how truthful you are.

Extension: Parashara gives only the rule for untruthfulness. Reverse it: benefics in the 2nd house and with the 2nd lord, or any strength to the two, make the person truthful.

Karakas:

Venus with Ketu (a student's point about a spot in the eye): Venus is the karaka of the eye, and afflicted by Ketu some eye problem is possible. But many people have Venus with Ketu. The 2nd house and 2nd lord must also play a part.

Foundational Teachings from This Chapter

Wealth = Resourcefulness

Said under verse 4, when a student took dhana to mean money.

• All value is perceived. Stock can go any day; so can gold coins in the garage — a thief can take them. "Wealth is just a perception."
• A currency note is special only because it is used to buy services. If stock options are used to get something, that is wealth too. Do not restrict wealth to currency notes.

"Wealth is a measure of your resourcefulness. How many resources you have or how many resources you can summon, that is it. That is the definition of dhana. Dhanavan means the person has abundant resources."

2nd House vs 2nd Lord

• Saturn in the 2nd house: accumulation is hard. Saturn with the 2nd lord: keeps it to himself.
• Rahu in the 2nd house: shock to the wealth. Rahu with the 2nd lord: may cheat to accumulate.
• 2nd lord exalted or in own sign: shares gladly, uses resources wisely. 2nd lord debilitated: feels he never has enough.
• The same split holds for the other matters of the house: verses 10–12 judge generosity and eyes from the 2nd lord; verse 13 needs both house and lord afflicted.

Probability of a Combination

• Parashara states something basic first and then builds on it.
• A combination every other person has (2nd lord in a kendra; 2nd lord in own sign) shows a basic level. A very specific one (verse 5; Mars in the 11th with Rahu in the 2nd in verse 8) shows something out of the ordinary.
• The verses are thumb rules. Weigh the relationship between the planets, aspects and other influences before predicting.

Mutual Placement

• Mutual trine: each blesses the other's agenda without effort (Lakshmi sthanas).
• Mutual kendra: they support each other but have to work at it (Narayana sthanas).
• Natural enmity between the two reduces it; in mutual trine they still have to reconcile.
