BPHS Ch.13 Verses 12–13 — Eyes (Venus Karaka), Speech+Truthfulness & Key Teaching: 2nd House vs 2nd Lord

Verse 12: 2nd lord strong = beautiful eyes; 2nd lord in 6/8/12 = eye problems. Why: 2nd house = right eye primarily (12th = left eye); 2nd lord in dusthana weakens the eye. Karakas for eyes: Venus = karaka for the physical eye organ; Sun = karaka for the sense of vision. Both must be examined alongside the 2nd house. Verse 13: 2nd house AND 2nd lord BOTH with malefics = person is a liar (tale-bearer, speaks untruth) + afflicted by Vata diseases (wind diseases — nervous system, joints, gas). Inverse: 2nd house + 2nd lord with benefics = person speaks truth. Multiple 2nd house karakas: Jupiter = wealth and truthfulness; Venus = physical eyes; Sun = vision; Mercury = speech. Foundational teaching — 2nd house vs 2nd lord distinction: 2nd HOUSE = objective state of accumulated resources (how much is there); 2nd LORD = attitude, approach, relationship to those resources. "You cannot really conclude how wealthy the person is from the 2nd house alone. But you can conclude how wealthy the person feels and behaves from the 2nd lord." 2nd lord with Saturn = selfish, keeps wealth for himself; with Rahu = may cheat to accumulate; with Jupiter = generous, philosophical; with Venus = passionate dynamic use. Wealth definition: "Wealth = resourcefulness — how many resources you can summon. Dana includes currency, stock options, land, connections — all forms of resources." Simple rules like 2nd lord in kendra = moderate wealth (common). Very specific combinations = extraordinary wealth (rare).

"Wealth is a measure of your resourcefulness — how many resources you can summon. That is it. Parashara's concept of Dhana should not be restricted to currency. Money, assets, connections, access — all are wealth."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS — Dhanabhava Phaladhyayam (2nd House Effects)

Chapter 13 in Santhanam's version. Parashara gives systematic rules for the 2nd house — wealth, eyes, speech, truthfulness — from 13 verses.

Verse 1: 2nd Lord in Own House or Kendra/Kona → Wealth

"Dhane sho dhanabhava sthaha, kendra kona gato pi vā, dhanavrudhikaro gneyah"

— PVNR
  • Dhanesha = 2nd lord; Dhanabhava sthaha = in the 2nd house; Kendra kona gato pi vā = or in a quadrant or trine
  • "vā" (or) — the condition is: 2nd house placement OR kendra/kona, not both required

Rule: If the 2nd lord is either in the 2nd house OR in a quadrant or trine → gives increase of wealth.

Counterpart: If the 2nd lord is in a dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) → Dhanahani krut = gives loss of wealth.

Verse 2: Nature of Planet in 2nd House

"Dhanadastya dhanaye saumyaha, papo dhanavinashakrit"

— PVNR
  • Natural benefic (saumya) in the 2nd house → gives good wealth
  • Natural malefic (papa) in the 2nd house → destroys wealth

Two separate rules:

  1. For occupancy of the 2nd house: look at the nature (saumya/krura) of the occupying planet
  2. For 2nd lord: whether it's in its own house or kendra/kona matters (Rule 1)

"As far as occupancy is concerned, look at the nature of the planet. As far as the lord is concerned, whether he is benefic or malefic, 2nd lord in 2nd is auspicious."

— PVNR

Verse 3: Jupiter's Connection to the 2nd House → Wealth

"Dhanadhipo gurur yasya dhana bhava gato bhavet, bhooma sahito vapi, dhanavansan robhavet"

— PVNR

Three alternate conditions (connected by = or):

  1. Jupiter is the 2nd lord and is in the 2nd house
  2. Jupiter owns the 2nd house (regardless of position)
  3. Jupiter is with Mars (Guru-Mangala Yoga)

→ Any one of these → Dhanavan = person will be wealthy

Why: Jupiter is Dhanakarka (significator of wealth). Any connection of Jupiter to the 2nd house blesses it.

Guru-Mangala Yoga (Jupiter + Mars): Even without 2nd house involvement, their conjunction itself is a wealth combination. The manner of wealth acquisition may be Martian (real estate, forcefulness, military, etc.) but wealth is assured.

Nuance: Mars alone in the 2nd house can deplete (natural malefic in 2H), but Mars with Jupiter → Jupiter's karaka power overrides, and the style becomes Martian but still prosperous.

Verse 4: 2nd–11th Lord Exchange or Mutual Kendra/Kona → Wealth

"Dhaneshe labhavasthe, labhesheva dhanamgate, tau bhau kendra konas tho, dhanavansan robhavet"

— PVNR

Three conditions (any one sufficient):

  1. 2nd lord in the 11th house (or)
  2. 11th lord in the 2nd house (or)
  3. Both 2nd lord and 11th lord well-placed in quadrants or trines (both must be fortified)

→ Person becomes wealthy

Why this works — the logic:

  • 2nd house = accumulated resources (what you store/keep)
  • 11th house = gains, what is coming in
  • If the 11th lord (gains) is in the 2nd house (accumulation), gains directly feed accumulation — income is retained
  • If the 2nd lord (accumulation) is in the 11th house, the planet whose job is accumulation is now also managing income — very efficient link
  • Both in kendra/kona = both planets are fortified and can perform their respective agendas strongly

"The planet whose agenda is to accumulate, if he is in charge of the income, will say, let it come in so that I can keep it. There is a synergy between the two things."

— PVNR

Clarification on "both in kendras/konas": They don't have to be in the same kendra or kona. 2nd lord in one kendra, 11th lord in a trine = also fine. Both must be independently well-placed.

Extension (PVNR): 2nd lord in an upachaya (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th) will use wealth for growth — but Parashara didn't explicitly mention this. Since 10th is a kendra, it's covered. 6th house: if 2nd lord is in 6th, wealth requires fighting for it; growth is possible but with struggle.

Verse 5: 2nd Lord in Kendra + 11th Lord in Trine + Jupiter/Venus Aspecting → Extraordinary Wealth

"Dhanesh kendra rashi ste, labhe se tat trikona ke, guru shukra yute drushte, dhana labho mahaan bhavet"

— PVNR

Conditions (all together):

  1. 2nd lord in a kendra
  2. 11th lord in a trine FROM the 2nd lord's position (mutual trine relationship)
  3. Jupiter or Venus conjuncts or aspects either/both of them

→ Extraordinary, exceptional wealth

Key teaching on probability and wealth combinations:

"Any results given by Parashara, you have to take them with a pinch of salt. If a combination is highly probable (every other person has it), it is probably not a combination that will make you like Bill Gates. Whereas if it is a combination that only 1 in a billion have it, maybe it shows something really special."

— PVNR

So Verse 1 gives basic wealth (common), Verse 5 gives extraordinary wealth (rare, very specific).

On mutual trine placement:

"Any planet, when it comes to the trines from it, it will just bless them. If a planet is in a trine from another planet, they will support each other's agenda very effortlessly."

— PVNR

Compare: planets in mutual kendra also support each other but must work hard; planets in mutual trine support effortlessly. Hence mutual trine > mutual kendra for synergy, though both are good.

Caveat: Even if two planets are in mutual trine, if they are enemies of each other (e.g., Sun and Venus), they may not promote each other's agenda as enthusiastically. Must consider compound friendship along with positional relationship.

Verse 6: 2nd and 11th Lords in Inimical Signs + Malefics in/Aspecting 2H and 11H → Financial Problems

"Dhanesho ripu bhavastho, labhe se tathagato yadi, dhanayau papa yuktauva, drishtau nidhana evasa"

— PVNR
  • Ripu bhavastho = in inimical sign (two interpretations: inimical sign OR 6th house — PVNR favors inimical sign)
  • Tathagato = similarly gone (also in inimical sign)
  • Papa yuktau vā drshtau = 2nd and 11th houses occupied OR aspected by malefics

All conditions together → financial difficulties, wealth not smooth

PVNR's interpretation of "Ripu bhava": Likely means inimical sign (not specifically 6th house), because otherwise Parashara would have said "in the 6th house" directly. The fact that he says "similarly placed" for both lords implies they can be in different signs that are each inimical to the respective planet.

Verse 7: Both 2nd and 11th Lords Combust + With Malefics → Poverty from Birth

"Dhanalabhādhipau astau, papagraha taman vitau, janma prabhūti dāridryam bhikshana mala..."

— PVNR
  • Both 2nd lord and 11th lord are combust (asta = set near Sun)
  • Both are with malefic planets
  • 2nd and 11th houses also afflicted by malefics

Janma prabhūti dāridryam = poverty since birth; person lives by begging

PVNR notes this is a rare combination because both lords must simultaneously be within combustion orb of the Sun, along with malefics. Low probability means when it does occur, the poverty is extreme.

Verse 8: 2nd + 11th Lords in Dusthanas + Mars in 11H + Rahu in 2H → Loss by Authority

"Labhe kujo dhane rahu, raja danda dhana kshaya, sasthe astame vyaye vapi, dhanalabha de powyari"

— PVNR

Conditions:

  1. 2nd lord and/or 11th lord in 6th, 8th, or 12th house
  2. Mars (Kuja) in the 11th house
  3. Rahu in the 2nd house

Raja danda dhana kshaya = loss of wealth due to punishment by king/authority (government, court, etc.)

Interpretation:

  • Mars in 11th restricts gains (natural malefic burning the gain energy)
  • Rahu in 2nd shows shock/cheating connected to wealth
  • 2nd/11th lords in dusthanas weaken the houses
  • The combined result: authority-level intervention causes wealth loss

This full combination (all conditions) is specific enough to indicate a significant, sudden loss by force of authority.

Verse 9: Jupiter in 11H + Venus in 2H + 2nd Lord with Benefics + Benefics in 12H → Wealth Spent on Dharma

"Labhe jive, dhane shukre, dhanese shubhasam yute, yaje cha shubhasam yukte, dharmakarmeje dhanabhjayah"

— PVNR

Conditions:

  1. Jupiter (Jiva) in the 11th house
  2. Venus (Shukra) in the 2nd house
  3. 2nd lord with benefic planets
  4. 12th house has benefic planets

→ Wealth is spent on dharmakarya = righteous, beneficial activities (temple construction, charity, feeding people, universities, orphanages, etc.)

Interpretation:

  • 11th house naturally Rajasic → Jupiter in 11th adds Sattva to gains (uses gains for higher purpose)
  • 2nd house naturally Sattvic → Venus in 2nd adds Rajas (dynamism, passion to put wealth to good use)
  • Benefics in 12th show good expenses (spending for righteous purposes)
  • 2nd lord with benefics = generous, open-hearted attitude to using resources

"Saturn in 11th is ruled by Jupiter, shows some fulfillment of the dharma. Venus in 2nd is Rajasic — some passionate use of that wealth. Something beautiful and good."

— PVNR

Guna analysis of 2nd and 11th:

  • 2nd house natural energy = Sattva (stable accumulated resources)
  • 11th house natural energy = Rajas (incoming, dynamic, movement of gains)
  • Best combination: Sattvic influence on Rajasic house (11th) and Rajasic influence on Sattvic house (2nd) = productive tension that leads to righteous use of wealth

Note: Venus is sometimes considered Labha Karaka (11th house significator) by some teachers (PVNR's father's tradition), while Jupiter is Dhana Karaka (2nd house significator).

Verse 10: 2nd Lord in Own Sign or Exaltation → Generous, Helpful Person

"Svabhoot uchaste dhanaadhi se jataka janapa shakah, paropakari khattastya, vijnayo vidya sattama"

— PVNR
  • Svabhoot = own sign; Uchaste = exaltation sign
  • Janaposhakah = nourishes people, gives food to people
  • Paropakari = helper of others (charitable, sharing nature)
  • Khyatastya = famous for these qualities

Rule: 2nd lord in exaltation or own sign → person will feed/help others, be generous, helpful, famous for giving.

Key teaching — 2nd House vs 2nd Lord:

"You cannot really conclude how wealthy the person is with the 2nd house. But you can conclude how wealthy the person feels, how wealthy the person behaves, from the 2nd house lord."

— PVNR
2nd House2nd Lord
ShowsAccumulated resources (objective)Attitude toward resources (subjective)
QuestionDoes person accumulate wealth? How does person relate to and use wealth?

2nd lord exalted → Person feels abundant, generous, shares freely even if not materially rich. Like a billionaire's attitude — "I have so much, let's share."

2nd lord debilitated → Person feels poor, dissatisfied with what they have, reluctant to share even if materially wealthy. "I don't have enough" mindset.

"If the 2nd lord is debilitated, your attitude towards how much money you have will be a little unhappy, a little disappointed. Even if you have $2 million, when asked for $100, you calculate if giving that $100 will bring your wealth down."

— PVNR

Verse 11: 2nd Lord in Paravatamsa or Higher + With Benefics → Effortless Abundance

"Sthite Paravata amsa adau, shubha samyute, tat gruhe sarva sampattiir vinayaas ke na jayate"

— PVNR
  • Paravatamsa = the 6th-level Vaiseshika amsa in the Dasavarga system (planet in own/exalted/Moolatrikona sign in 6 or more out of 10 divisional charts)
  • "Adau" = beginning with this, meaning Paravatamsa and higher (Gopura, Simhasana, etc.)
  • Shubha samyute = with benefic planets (conjunct or aspected)
  • Tat gruhe sarva sampattir vinayaske na jayate = in that person's house, all kinds of resources arrive effortlessly

Rule: If the 2nd lord is in Paravatamsa or higher Vaiseshika amsa AND with benefic influence → all wealth and resources come without effort.

Dasavarga Vaiseshika Amsa system (from least to greatest):

  1. Parijata (1 chart)
  2. Uttama (2 charts)
  3. Gopura (3 charts)
  4. Simhasana (4 charts)
  5. Paravata (5 charts — PVNR wasn't sure if it's 5 or 6; likely 6)
  6. Devaloka (6+ charts)
  7. Higher amsas...

Key principle: The Vaiseshika amsa of the 2nd lord (how many divisional charts it is dignified in) is very, very important for judging wealth quality.

Verse 12: 2nd Lord Strong → Beautiful Eyes; 2nd Lord in Dusthana → Eye Problems

"Sastha astama vyaya sthecha netra vaikal javan bhavet, netrashye balasamyukte, shobhana aksha bhavet naraha"

— PVNR
  • 2nd lord with strength (Balasamyukte) → Shobhana aksha = beautiful eyes
  • 2nd lord in 6th, 8th, or 12th → Netra vaikal = eye problems (weak, malformed, ugly eyes)

Why 2nd house relates to eyes: 2nd house is one of the two houses for eyes (2nd = right eye especially; 12th = left eye). The 2nd lord being in dusthana weakens the 2nd house and therefore the eyes.

Karaka for eyes:

  • Venus = Karaka for the eyes (the physical organ)
  • Sun = Karaka for vision (the sense of sight)
  • Both must be considered alongside the 2nd house

Example: Venus with Ketu alone is not enough to show eye disease — must also check the state of 2nd house and 2nd lord.

Verse 13: 2nd House and 2nd Lord Both Afflicted by Malefics → Liar + Vata Disease

"Dhane se papa samanvitte, dhane se papa samyukte... pishinah satya badi cha, achatyavadi, vatabhyah samanvitah"

— PVNR
  • 2nd house occupied by malefics AND 2nd lord with malefics

  1. Pishinah = tale-bearer, liar (one who makes up stories, speaks untruth)
  2. Achatyavadi = speaks falsehood
  3. Vatabhyah samanvitah = afflicted by Vata diseases (wind diseases in Ayurveda — nervous system, joints, gas, etc.)

Extended rule: The inverse also holds — 2nd house and 2nd lord with benefics → person speaks truth.

Multiple significations of the 2nd house:

SignificationKaraka
Wealth/resourcesJupiter
Eyes (physical)Venus
SpeechMercury
TruthfulnessJupiter
Vision/sightSun

Foundational Teachings from This Chapter

"Wealth = Resourcefulness"

"Wealth is just a perception. Dana means a rupee note, but stock options, land, connections — all are wealth. Wealth is a measure of your resourcefulness. How many resources you can summon, that is it."

— PVNR

Parashara's concept of Dhana should not be restricted to currency. It encompasses all forms of resources — money, assets, connections, access, ability to get things done.

2nd House vs 2nd Lord — Key Distinction

  • 2nd house = objective state of accumulated resources (what is there)
  • 2nd lord = attitude, approach, and relationship to those resources
  • Strong 2nd house → person accumulates well
  • Strong 2nd lord → person has a healthy, positive attitude to wealth, uses it wisely
  • Afflicted 2nd house → poor accumulation
  • Afflicted 2nd lord → distorted relationship to wealth (hoarding, cheating, lying to get wealth, etc.)

On Applying Parashara's Rules Intelligently

"Any results given by Parashara, you have to take them with a pinch of salt. Realize the probability of the combination. If a combination is highly probable, it is probably not showing something extraordinary. If it is very specific, it shows something really special."

— PVNR

Simple rules (2nd lord in kendra) = moderate wealth, many people have it.
Very specific rules (verse 5) = extraordinary wealth, rare.

2nd Lord with Malefics — Reading the Character

Planet with 2nd LordEffect on attitude toward wealth
SaturnSelfish, keeps wealth for himself; accumulation-focused
RahuMay cheat or scheme to accumulate wealth
JupiterGenerous, philosophical about wealth, uses it for higher purpose
VenusPassionate, dynamic use of wealth
MercuryDual — depends on functional nature; clever in resource management
