BPHS Ch.18 Verses 1–6 — 7th House: Spouse Happiness, Venus Sthirakaraka, Three Types of Karaka & Affairs by Planet in 7H

BPHS Ch.18 (Jaya Bhava Phaladhyayam — 7th house results). Verse 1: 7th lord in own/exalted sign = complete happiness from spouse. Verse 2: 7th lord in 6/8/12 without dignity = wife is diseased or seriously unhappy marriage. Verse 3: Venus in 7H = native has very strong worldly desires (atikami). Venus (Sthirakaraka) afflicted by functional malefics = death or suffering of wife (men's chart); Jupiter afflicted = husband death/suffering (women's chart). Three karaka types: Naisargika (Brahma) = timing of spouse's arrival; Charakaraka (Vishnu) = Raj Yogas, sustenance; Sthirakaraka (Shiva) = death, calamity, suffering. Verse 4: 7th lord strong + with/aspected by functional benefics = wealthy, respected, moves in big circles (7H = 11th from 9th = fortune fulfillment). Verse 5: 7th lord debilitated/combust/in inimical sign = diseased wife OR many wives (negative — each wife sick or dies). Verse 6: 7th lord in Saturn/Venus sign + exalted + functional benefics = many wives (positive — fortunate with spouses). Verse 7: planet in 7H → type of affair: Sun=barren/royal woman; Moon=flexible by sign; Mars=very young or barren; Mercury=businesswoman or veshya; Jupiter=Brahmin's wife or pregnant woman; Saturn/Rahu/Ketu=old/lowly/outcast/foreigner. A7 (Daraphada) is the tangible manifestation; D1 is primary for physical affairs (not D9).

"Venus is the Sthirakaraka for wife in men's charts — Shiva's domain. That is why Venus afflicted shows death or suffering of wife. Jupiter for husbands in women's charts. The three types of karaka serve three different lords."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS — Jaya Bhava Phaladhyayam (7th House Effects)

Parashara begins Chapter 18 (Santhanam): "Jayabhava phalam vakshe shrunutvam dvijasattama" — O great learned Brahmin, I shall tell the results of the 7th house, please listen carefully.

Verse 1: 7th Lord in Own Sign or Exaltation → Complete Happiness from Spouse

"Jayardhipeh swabhay swotche, tri sukham poornam adhishet"

— PVNR
  • Jayardhipeh = lord of the 7th house
  • Swabhay = in own sign; Swotche = in exaltation sign

Tri sukham poornam = complete happiness from spouse/women

Verse 2: 7th Lord in Dusthana (6/8/12) Without Own Sign/Exaltation → Wife Has Diseases

"Kalatrapah vinasvarksham, vyaya shasta astama sthitah, rognim kruute narim, tatha tunga adhikam vinah"

— PVNR
  • 7th lord in 6th, 8th, or 12th house
  • AND not in own sign, not in Moolatrikona, not in exaltation (tunga adhikam vinah = without these dignities)

→ The native's wife (narim) will be roghini (diseased/sickly)

PVNR's nuance: This doesn't necessarily mean the wife is sick at marriage — she may become sick afterward. More broadly, suffering and unhappiness relating to the spouse.

Verse 3: Venus in 7H → Strong Desires; Venus (Karaka) Afflicted → Death/Suffering of Wife

Part 1: "Saptametu siddhe sukreti vakkami bhaven naraha"

  • Venus in the 7th house → The person will have atikami = very strong desires; worldly desires are amplified

Part 2: "Yatracottasthite papayute stri mananam bhavet"

  • Venus, wherever he is, afflicted by functional malefics (papa = functional) → Stri mananam = death of the spouse (or serious suffering of wife)

Critical distinction — Three types of Karaka:

Karaka TypeRuled byUsed for
Naisargika KarakaBrahmaTiming when spouse/child arrives (creation)
CharakarakaVishnuRaj Yogas, sustenance of life
SthirakarakaShivaDeath, suffering, Arishta; timing death/calamity
  • For a man: Venus is the Sthirakaraka for spouse → afflicted Venus = suffering/death of wife
  • For a woman: Jupiter is the Sthirakaraka for husband → afflicted Jupiter = suffering/death of husband
  • This explains why Venus (not the 7th lord) is used here: Parashara is looking at death/suffering (Shiva's domain)

"Some traditions use Jupiter in women's charts for all spouse matters. But in our tradition (Parashari), Jupiter is used for the spouse's death/suffering — the Sthirakaraka role."

— PVNR

Verse 4: 7th Lord Strong + With/Aspected by Functional Benefics → Fortune, Wealth, Respect

"Jayashe subhairyuktodrushto va balasa myutah, tada jato dhanimani sukha souagya samyutah"

— PVNR
  • 7th lord is strong (bala)
  • 7th lord is with or aspected by functional benefics (subha = functional)

→ The native is dhani (wealthy), mani (respected), sukha souagya (comfortable and fortunate)

PVNR's explanation: 7th house is not just the house of marriage. It is:

  • 11th from 9th: fulfillment of fortune
  • 4th house argala: direction, happiness
  • 6th house argala: effort and overcoming obstacles
  • The extrovert lagna: how you interact with the world; who you move with

"The world judges you based on your interactions. 7th house is who you are moving with. If 7th lord is strong and with functional benefics, you move in big circles — this shows wealth and fortune."

— PVNR

Chart application rule: Apply results about spouse's happiness in Navamsa (7th house in D9). Apply results about wealth/fortune from 7th house in D2 (Hora) and D4. Rasi chart = physical body and physical interactions.

"Rasi chart is primarily a chart of your physical body. Don't downplay the physical aspect of each house."

— PVNR

Verse 5: 7th Lord Debilitated/Combust/Inimical/Weak → Diseased Wife or Many Wives (Negatively)

"Nitye satrugrahasthe va nirbale cha kalatrapae, tasyapi rogunibharya bahubharjo naro bhavet"

— PVNR
  • 7th lord in:
    • Nitye = debilitation
    • Satrugrahe = inimical sign
    • Aste = combustion
    • Nirbale = generally weak

→ Wife is roghini (diseased), OR the native has many wives — but negatively (wife dies, so he marries again, that wife is also sick, then another)

Converse principle: Since verse 4 gives a positive result for strong 7th lord, the opposite (verse 5) gives the negative version. Parashara doesn't always repeat the converse — he implies it.

Verse 6: 7th Lord in Saturn/Venus Sign + Exalted + With Functional Benefics → Fortunate with Spouses

"Manda bhaya shukra geha jaya dishah shubhakshite, swatiya kegey tu visheshena, bahubharyjo narabhaved"

— PVNR
  • 7th lord in a Saturnine sign (Capricorn/Aquarius) or Venusian sign (Taurus/Libra)
  • 7th lord is exalted in one of these signs
  • 7th lord is aspected or conjoined by functional benefics

Bahubharyo = many wives — but positively (fortunate with spouses; great luck in marriage)

Who can be exalted in these signs? Saturn (in Libra = Venus sign), Moon (in Taurus = Venus sign), Mars (in Capricorn = Saturn sign). So this applies to specific lagnas where these planets are the 7th lord.

Desha-Kala-Patra principle: "Having many wives" in a different era = being very lucky and fortunate with one's spouse in the modern context. Results must be interpreted within the context of time, place, and social condition.

Verse 7: Planet Occupying 7H → Type of Extra-Marital Affair

The planet occupying the 7th house suggests the nature of the person's desires and affairs.

— PVNR
Planet in 7HNature of Affair Indicated
SunAffair with a barren/childless woman, or a royal woman
MoonAffair based on the sign Moon occupies (Moon is flexible, shows multiple possibilities)
MarsAffair with a very young woman (teenager) or barren woman
MercuryAffair with a businesswoman, or a person of low character, or a veshya (prostitute)
JupiterAffair with a Brahmin priest's wife, or a pregnant woman
Saturn/Rahu/KetuAffair with a lowly/old woman, an outcast, or a foreigner (in case of Rahu/Ketu)
VenusMissing from list — Venus IS the base karaka; his presence defines the "affair" framework

Why Venus is absent: Venus is the planet of desires and physical relationships itself. All these affairs have a link to Venus as the base. The other planets modify what TYPE of person the affair is with.

PVNR's practical caution:

"You cannot look at a planet in the 7th house and say 'you are having an affair with X.' That would be terrible. There must be a clear combination indicating extramarital involvement — Rahu's influence, weakened dharma (9th house afflicted), and A7 (Daraphada) showing tangible relationship outside marriage."

— PVNR

A7 (Daraphada): The Arudha of the 7th house = tangible manifestation of relationships and affairs. If A7 contains these planets, the interpretation becomes more apt.

Divisional chart for affairs: Rasi chart is most important for physical relationships (more so than Navamsa, which is Dharma-amsa). Affairs are physical, so D1 is primary.
