Shodasha Varga — Complete Division Chart Reference

The class revises what each divisional chart shows before reading the Navamsa.

Divisional Charts and Their Purpose

The Logic Behind Some of Them

• Navamsa and marriage: "Even if marriage is adharma, still it is from Navamsa, because dharma or lack of it is from Navamsa."
• D16: 16 − 12 = 4, so it is a 4th-house matter. How happy or sad you feel is in the mind. It covers all the things that make life comfortable, vehicles included.
• D27: charts between 24 and 36 work at the subconscious level.
• D30: 30 − 24 = 6, so it is the enemy — but the subconscious enemy, your own.
• D40: 40 − 36 = 4, the mother's side. Mother, mother's mother, mother's father and so on. A great karma of theirs hangs on you as a blessing or a curse.
• D45: 45 − 36 = 9, the father's side.
• D40 and D45 are usually ignored. The teacher names a condition under which they are taken up; it is garbled in the recording.

D60 Is the Bottom Line

"Parasara gives it the highest score, more than Rasi and Navamsa combined. That is because this is the karma which you have to experience."

• Rasi, Navamsa and the other charts are vehicles for experiencing that karma. You may have a happy or an unhappy married life; what comes out of it is decided by the Shashtyamsa.
• It is not given the first place in class only because birth times are rarely accurate enough for it.

Student Question — What to Check in the Trimsamsa

• Everyone has evil forces within. Even great saints have soft spots. The question is whether those forces can reach you and make you do karma.
• Check the affliction on the Moon in D30 first. The subconscious attacks the mind first.
• Check the lagna lord of the Rasi chart as placed in D30. He is your intelligence and the seat of your physical existence; all karma is done through him. Whatever joins him in a divisional chart pushes its agenda into your intelligence.
• Check Jupiter, the teacher who advises.
• Check the D30 lagna and its lord too.
• If the Rasi lagna lord is afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn in D30, negative forces are working on your consciousness. They may still not make you do bad karma if Jupiter is well placed in D30.
• Affliction to the D30 lagna lord or to the Moon in D30 pushes the native harder towards bad karma.
• A bad combination in D30 that does not touch these does not matter much.

Manakaraka / Mangalakshana — Each Planet's "Death House"

Marana Karaka Sthana ("Manakaraka", "Mangalakshana" in the recording): one house per planet where the planet is like dead. It does not enjoy being there. What the house asks is against its nature, so it struggles to do the house's work and is weak.

Ketu

• A student quotes a house for Ketu. The teacher: there is no classical sanction for it. The classics give Ketu in the 2nd house very good speech.
• If one must say something: Ketu dislikes every house except the 12th. He only wants to give moksha. Elsewhere he gives material results, which are not to his liking.

How It Is Used in This Class

• In the Rasi chart of the example, Mars and Mercury are both in the 7th house — both in Marana Karaka Sthana. See Part 6.
• In the Dasamsa of the example, three planets are in Marana Karaka Sthana — Sun in the 12th, Mercury in the 7th, Saturn in the 1st. That explains why she does not work and settles the Dasamsa lagna. See Part 5.

Example Chart — Woman Who Never Wanted to Marry

The Case

• A woman of 37, turning 38 in July 2006. Not married.
• She gave no reason. She only said she did not want to marry: she was happy with what she had and did not want trouble.
• In the last two years she changed her mind and is willing to marry. Nothing has come of it so far.
• She lives with her parents and does not work. She took a bachelor's degree in biology in 1988 and does not use it.
• Her elder sister asked for advice.
• Two questions: why did she not want to marry, and when can she marry?

Rasi Chart — Sagittarius Lagna

• Lagna at 12°17' Sagittarius. Moon at 14°46' Aries.
• Lagna lord Jupiter in the 9th, in Leo.
• Mars (5th and 12th lord) and Mercury (7th and 10th lord) in the 7th, in Gemini.
• Sun (9th lord) and Venus (6th and 11th lord) in the 8th, in Cancer.
• Moon (8th lord) and Saturn (debilitated) in the 5th, in Aries. Aries is the Arudha Lagna.
• Rahu in the 4th, Ketu in the 10th.
• Saturn is the Darakaraka and the lord of the Upapada (UL). The 2nd from UL is also his sign.
• Mars is the Atmakaraka.
• A7 (Darapada) is in Pisces, the 12th from the Arudha Lagna.

Marriage Analysis — Rashi Chart

Why She Did Not Want to Marry

Factor 1 — Mars and Mercury in Marana Karaka Sthana in the 7th

• A student notes the 12th lord (giving up) in the 7th. The teacher: Mars is also the 5th lord, and the 5th is stronger than the 12th. Take him as the 5th lord — emotions, love, the ability to attach to people.
• Mercury is the 7th lord, in the 7th.
• The 5th lord and the 7th lord together make a Raja Yoga. But both are in Marana Karaka Sthana.
• The 5th lord in the 7th is good in itself, but he is in Marana Karaka Sthana, so the houses Mars owns are very weak.

"It's basically a Raja Yoga between two dead people, but it's a Raja Yoga."

• The good news: Mercury is in his own house. Any remedy has to look at Mercury.

Factor 2 — Saturn–Moon in the Arudha Lagna

• A student asks why Saturn matters for marriage. He is the lord of the UL and he is the Darakaraka. And he afflicts the Moon.
• Venus is the natural karaka of marriage. The Darakaraka is the chara karaka: at the level of the soul, he is the one in charge of connecting her to another soul in marriage. Here that planet is Saturn.
• Moon with Saturn makes the mind prone to vairagya — loss of interest. In the Arudha Lagna it makes her lose interest in life.
• Saturn is debilitated here. The published class notes call Moon with Saturn a Pravrajya yoga: the mind turns to negative thoughts and gives up worldly attachments.
• A student objects that the Arudha is only how the world sees her. The teacher: it is not just perception; that is how it manifests.

Factor 3 — A7 in the 12th from the Arudha Lagna

• AL and A7, and AL and UL, should be well placed from each other.
• A7 in the 12th from AL: not just marriage — she is not interested in relations with people at all.
• AL and A7 in trines or quadrants make people who are always dealing with people.

Factor 4 — Venus is the 6th Lord

• The karaka is the project manager. For the project "get her married", the manager is Venus.
• In this chart Venus is the 6th lord. The 6th is the house of bachelorhood.

"Even though he is the project manager, in this particular chart he is given the management of the group whose job is to keep her a bachelor."

• On top of that he is in the 8th house.

Factor 5 — the Navamsa (Part 7)

• The Rasi 7th lord Mercury is in the 8th in Navamsa. The Navamsa 7th lord Saturn is debilitated. Rahu, the 8th lord, is in the 7th.

What the Rasi Alone Does Not Settle

• There are enough negatives in the Rasi to show vairagya and no interest in moving with people. If the Navamsa were strong, marriage could still be given. So the Navamsa decides.
