Introduction to Narayana Dasha for Divisional Charts

Every divisional chart has its own Narayana Dasha. It shows where Narayana is for that area of life, and times events of that area very well. The software computes it; the rule is given for those who want it.

The Controlling House

For D-N the controlling house is the Nth house; above 12, remove twelves.

The Rule

1. In the Rasi chart, take the lord of the controlling house.
2. See which sign he occupies in the divisional chart.
3. Treat that sign as lagna and the divisional chart as if it were a Rasi chart, and compute Narayana Dasha exactly as usual: stronger of that sign and its 7th, progression by the nature of the sign, direction by the usual rule.
4. That sign is used only for the calculation. For judging, use the divisional chart's own lagna.

Worked Example: D-10 of Michael Jackson

• Controlling house 10th. The 10th in the Rasi is Aquarius: lords Saturn and Rahu.
• Both are 10th lords, so the stronger in the dasamsa counts.
• First source of strength, number of planets with them: both alone. Tie.
• Next, rasi drishti from Jupiter, Mercury and the dispositor. Saturn receives none: count 0. Rahu (Libra) is aspected by Mercury: count 1. Rahu wins.
• A student asks whether this is rasi drishti. Yes: for this source of strength it is rasi drishti, because it is permanent; graha drishti is temporary desire.
• Rahu is in Libra. Libra and its 7th, Aries: one planet each, both aspected by Mercury, but Jupiter aspects only Aries. Aries 2, Libra 1. Start from Aries.

Progression and Direction

• Movable sign: Brahma progression, one sign after another. Fixed: Shiva, every 6th. Dual: Vishnu, trine by trine.
• Direction depends on the 9th from the starting sign being odd-footed or even-footed. Odd-footed: Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius. The other six are even-footed.
• 9th from Aries is Sagittarius, odd-footed: the dashas should go forward — Aries, Taurus, Gemini.
• The software goes backward: Aries, Pisces, Aquarius. Why? Ketu is in Aries.
• Ketu exception: if the starting sign holds Ketu, reverse. Only Ketu, not Rahu.
• Saturn exception (not applicable here): if the starting sign holds Saturn, always go forward, and switch to Brahma progression, one sign at a time. Saturn does not jump; Brahma is his deity.

Only the 1st Principle for Divisional Narayana Dasha

• Do not take the dasha sign or its 7th as lagna here. Use the divisional chart's normal lagna and see which house Narayana is in and what he activates.
• The 2nd and 3rd principles can be used, but there is more to them; the teacher leaves them for later.
• The activation works through the lord of the dasha sign, whose agenda is the same as Narayana's. Planets in the sign are also energised and push their own agendas. Planets with the lord share the energy.
• The reading of this native's D-10 dashas is at the end of Part 3.

Art and Science

"If you use just Rasi chart and Vimshottari or Rasi Narayana Dasha, what you are doing is basically an art. If you use the divisional chart and Narayana Dasha of the divisional chart, it borders on being a science."

• What is found in the Rasi applies to everybody born in the same two hours. Mars and Ketu in the 4th from the dasha lagna cost this native his peace of mind; for someone born an hour later it may be the mother, or a dispute over a house.
• The teacher calls the Narayana Dasha of divisional charts the most accurate dasha he knows for natal charts, and tells the class to compute their own D-10, D-9 and D-24 Narayana Dashas and bring questions.

D-24 Narayana Dasha — Occult Learning and Evolution

The Four Houses of Occult Knowledge

The kendras from the 8th house: 2, 5, 8, 11.

• A student suggests the 2nd as the house of learning. No: the 2nd is speech and resources; the 4th is learning; the 5th is abilities.
• These are thumb rules. Not everyone learns astrology only in the dasha of the 8th, 11th or 5th. A sign may be weak while its lord is strong in a yoga. Or the D-24 lagna may be wrong: it changes about every five minutes.

Example 1 — A Student Born 1961: Libra Dasha

• D-24 lagna Pisces. Running Libra dasha, September 2004 – September 2011.
• Libra is the 8th house of occult knowledge and holds Jupiter, the significator of traditional and astrological knowledge.
• A5 and A11 are both there.
• The 5th house is the scholarship you have accumulated, the actual ability. A5 is its manifestation — a degree, or sounding like a scholar. Whether he really is one is another question: the houses from lagna are the hidden reality, the arudha is what comes out. Terminology alone makes an argument look too simple or too learned; both impressions can be wrong.
• The student had begun studying a few months before the dasha. The teacher: real progress comes after September, and the period is auspicious for any hidden knowledge, not only astrology.
• The teacher had not seen this dasha before the class; he expected one of the houses of occult knowledge to be running, and it is.

Example 2 — A Student Born 1965: Sagittarius Dasha

• D-24 lagna Aquarius. Running Sagittarius, the 11th house: learning occult knowledge.
• Saturn, the lagna lord, is in it. The lagna is the seed of learning; the lagna lord is the intelligence behind the whole learning process. Signs are situations, planets are the intelligence behind them.
• A very good period for learning of every kind. Because the 11th here aspects the 8th, 5th and 2nd (the four houses are in dual signs, so every planet in them aspects the others by rasi drishti), occult learning is likely too.
• The calculation for this chart: controlling house 12th; the 12th lord of the Rasi is Venus; Venus is in Scorpio in the D-24; the dashas are computed with Scorpio as lagna. Scorpio is not used for judging.
• This student is reasonably confident of his birth time, so the D-24 lagna is taken as it stands.

Example 3 — A Student Born 1963: Capricorn Dasha, Then Sagittarius

Is the D-24 lagna right?

• The lagna is just under 20° Virgo. The D-24 lagna changes if the birth is 8 seconds later, or 4 minutes 59 seconds earlier.
• At 20° the navamsa and the drekkana change too. Earlier classes had fixed the lagna below 20° from his navamsa and drekkana. That rules out Scorpio. D-24 lagna is Libra.
• A student asks whether rectifying a fast chart guarantees the slower ones. Not quite. Fixing the D-24 lagna pins the lagna to a 1°15′ window, but a dasamsa border (21°) can still fall inside it. The divisions are not all aligned: D-10 aligns with D-20, D-12 with D-24, D-3 with D-9; D-9 and D-24 share the factor 3, so they change together at 10° and 20°.
• Rectify with whichever events you are confident about.

Capricorn dasha (1993 – 2005)

• Capricorn is the 4th house of learning. Its lord Saturn is in his own house, owns the 4th and 5th — Yogakaraka. A period of very good learning.
• What he learns depends on the houses Saturn owns, on the amsa Saturn is in (the D-24 amsas have not been taught yet), and on what Saturn controls in the Rasi chart.
• In the Rasi, Saturn is the 5th lord in the 5th house of scholarship, with Mercury and Ketu. Mercury is a significator of astrology; Ketu of traditional Vedic knowledge. Mathematics, logic, analysis, computers, information technology also come from these two.
• Saturn could mean other 5th-house things too. To see which, follow the same Saturn into the divisions: in the D-24 he is in the 4th of learning, and the same Mercury and Ketu are in the D-24 lagna, with Saturn's argala on them. Planets in lagna affect the very seed.
• The Moon is also in the D-24 lagna. In the Rasi the Moon is the 11th lord: gains, and here learning of occult knowledge.
• Saturn in Capricorn aspects the 8th, 11th and 2nd houses, and is the 5th lord. In this chart those four houses are not in dual signs and do not aspect each other; Saturn is the one link between them: aptitude, learning, application, prediction.

The 8th lord of the Rasi

• For occult knowledge the controlling planet in the Rasi is the 8th lord, Mars. He is in the 11th house: conducive to occult learning.
• He is debilitated, retrograde, and with Rahu. The class raises neecha bhanga. The teacher's point is the affliction: Mars with Rahu or Ketu is problematic whatever his dignity. He has seen exalted Mars with Rahu in Capricorn give trouble.
• Here Mars is at 14°19′ and Rahu at about 4°: a lot of distance, so not that bad. A close Mars–Rahu conjunction is a bad affliction for the house. Remedy: pray to Lord Subrahmanya.

Sagittarius dasha (starting within days of the class)

• Sagittarius is the 3rd house: initiative and communication.
• Its lord Jupiter is in the 9th house with Sun and Mars, three mutual friends. No Raja Yoga as such.
• The 9th is protection. In learning, your protection is the guru. The lord of the dasha is the karaka for guru, strongly placed in the house of guru.
• Prediction: he finds a very good guru who guides him on the spiritual path.
• Second prediction: a D-24 dasha of the 3rd house makes a person write — a book, articles for magazines.
• A student asks: what if the 3rd lord were in the 8th? He would still communicate, but within the limits of the 8th: coded, indirect writing, hard to decipher.

Virgo dasha (earlier)

• The student adds that he first learnt astrology and homeopathy in Virgo dasha. Virgo holds A8 and A2.
• The 2nd house is prediction, using the resources; A2 is its manifestation: he is active in applying the knowledge and predicting, rightly or wrongly.
• A8 is manifested occult knowledge: people see him as a man of occult knowledge.
• Still, Libra — the lagna with all those planets, run during school — is the seed of all his learning.

D-24 as the Chart of Evolution

All Knowledge, and Maturity

• D-24 is all knowledge: traditional, astrological, information technology, hardware, software, biotechnology.
• It is also this: a man who shouts at everybody realises one day that people listen when he speaks nicely. That is learning too.

"D-24 is not just a chart of learning a particular subject. This is the chart of evolution as a person. It is basically the chart of getting mature."

• 24 is built on the seed of the 12th house, and the 12th is giving up. It is the chart of giving up your identity, of evolving, of getting humility.
• Divisions 13 to 24 are the plane of consciousness.

Use the Rasi Chart With the Divisional Chart

• This class has given most weight to divisional charts and used the Rasi only for physical manifestation. Some astrologers do the opposite. The ideal astrologer uses both.
• D-24 is only the learning environment. The Rasi is the physical existence through which that environment acts.
• That is why the lord of the controlling house in the Rasi is the seed of the divisional Narayana Dasha: it shows the link.
  • The 10th lord of the Rasi controls the karma you physically do.
  • The 4th lord of the Rasi controls the learning you do.
  • The 8th lord of the Rasi controls occult knowledge — and troubles, health problems, death. Which of these manifests is seen by following him into the divisions.
• The teacher's own example: if Mercury is the 10th lord of the dasamsa, the work is done in an intellectual environment. That the work is typing all day, with trouble in the fingers, and driving fifty miles every Sunday to sit on the floor and teach — that is the Rasi.

Arudha Lagna in Divisional Charts

Lagna, Lagna Lord and Arudha Lagna of a Division

A student asks whether the lagna of every divisional chart signifies the native. Yes:

• The lagna of a division is its seed. It is you from the point of view of that chart's matters: D-7 lagna is you in relation to children, D-24 lagna is you as a learner.
• The lagna lord shows how you use your intelligence in that area.
• The Arudha Lagna of that division shows the image you have in that area.

All three examples are from the chart of the student born in 1963.

D-24: Image as a Student

• AL of the D-24 is in Capricorn with Saturn.
• At school, college or a class like this one, he is seen as diligent, hardworking, sincere, content to keep doing his work. Not as brilliant: Saturn does not show that; Mercury or Jupiter would.

D-10: Image at Work

• AL of the D-10 is in Pisces with Mercury: very intelligent. Pisces is a fertile-minded sign.
• Mercury is debilitated. In the image, debilitated = hardworking; exalted = easygoing, relaxed, cool.
• So: very intelligent, but still works hard.

D-12: Image With Parents

• D-12 is the chart of parents and the parental home. Its AL is in Leo with Mercury and Rahu.
• Mercury: parents and grandparents think him an intelligent child. Leo: slightly adamant, demanding. Rahu: a little devious.
• Compare the D-24: at home he may be thought intelligent and not very hardworking; at school, hardworking. The clashes between what different people think of the same person come from the Arudha Lagnas of the different divisions.

Rasi Drishti on the Arudha Lagna

• Other planets aspect this AL: by rasi drishti Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon.
• A student: graha drishti changes with time; rasi drishti is always there. The teacher agrees.
• Father, mother and grandfather each see him differently; those differences are read from the planets influencing the same AL. The teacher leaves the detail for later.
• For the overall image: the planets in AL, the lord of the sign, and the sign itself.

AL With No Planets

• Take the lord, the house, and the kind of sign. The same planet in an AL in Capricorn and in Aries gives different images: Capricorn is a tamasic sign, a sign of Kali Yuga; Aries is dynamism and creation.
• AL in Leo with no planets: the image of a king. Authoritative; people think he behaves as if everyone were his servant.

What Arudha Lagna Is

"When I say Arudha Lagna shows image, don't think that it is something that is being created by people in their minds. It is something that you are projecting."

• It is maya, but it is the only thing that is relevant, the only truth in this illusory world as far as the material world goes.
• If there is a problem in the Arudha Lagna, other people did not create it. You did. The Arudha Lagna is decided by where the lagna lord is: by how you apply your intelligence you project an image.
• Arudha means the risen one. It is what you make rise so that people can see it.

Philosophy of Astrology — Free Will, Remedies, and the Scientific Future

A student asks: if all this is preordained, what is the power of free will?

Never 100%

• When your predictions come true, tell yourself it will not always happen. Maybe 95%, 90%, 80%, 70% — never 100%.

"The moment you think that, oh, I know principles that always work, you had it. If God likes you, he will find a way to show you that you are wrong. If he doesn't like you, he will let you remain in that illusion for more years."

• The knowledge in the scriptures and classics is not crystal clear. There are many missing links. We can say what is likely; we can never be sure.

Degrees of an Event

• An accident can be small or huge. Trouble can be small or big. The chart does not give the exact degree.
• Knowing a bad time, be extra careful; the degree may come out less than it would have. Knowing a good time, take the risk and take advantage.

Remedies

• By praying to deities and doing remedial measures you can reduce the impact of karma.
• By suffering in another way — fasting every Thursday for forty Thursdays, sitting five hours in a puja — you alleviate other suffering. Nothing comes easy. Paying $1,000 to have it done may or may not help. The equation is balanced at the end.
• A student: even the remedy comes to you only if you are destined to get it.

"You will have gold in front of you, you will just walk over it."

• The teacher agrees it is possible, and that there are combinations showing when remedies are more effective. But again it is 70, 80, 90%, never 0 or 100.
• So the astrologer's duty: even if you think he will not do the remedy, tell him. If your hunch is right he will not do it. If the dasha is conducive to remedies, tell him; most probably he will.
• Your reading is your best guess, not the reality. Act on the best guess each time and you help in most cases.

Setting Expectations

• If you see six years of suffering and a karmic debt that remedies will not clear, say so honestly: "Do this puja, there will be some relief, but not full relief. It will be six years." He can at least be prepared.
• Told "one and a half years", a person fixes his mind on that date. Told "two months" and then "another two months", he gets totally frustrated.
• A man raising money for a new business in a bad period: tell him to wait two years. If he uses up his contacts in the bad years, they may not give when the right time comes.

"Sometimes what you don't do is also valuable."

• If everything were perfectly decided, astrology would be useless. The teacher's contention: it is not perfectly decided, at least as we understand it.

Astrology as a Science

• If rules can be shown to work consistently, that validates the ancient culture.
• The test: the scientific community gives 100 anonymous charts with objective questions — when did he marry; in periods A, B, C, D, which event happened. No astrologer today would score 100%. Astrology is not at that level.
• If part of it is established as a potential science, funding follows, from individuals or governments. Research needs money. Then the classics can be researched thoroughly. The Maharshis taught this knowledge because it has a use; in Kali Yuga it got corrupted.

"My gut feeling is it will happen in the next 10-15 years."

• Today one says 7 chara karakas, another 8; one ayanamsa, another ayanamsa. Everybody pulls in a different direction. Standardising needs a concerted effort, which needs resources, which will not come until people working on their own time and money bring astrology to a certain level.

Helping With Imperfect Knowledge

• A man with a good job and another offer asks whether to move. It can change his whole life. If the next year is bad, tell him to stay. It may still be bad, but he is saved from much worse.

"Even with imperfect knowledge, you can help people. You can help people who are directionless in making important decisions in life."
