Identifying a Saint's Chart — 3rd and 6th from Arudha Lagna

The Question

The question is not "is this person spiritual?" It is: is this a materially inclined person, or a saint who does not care for material success?

The Core Rule

• 3rd house = parākrama, initiative. 6th house = fighting and defeating enemies.
• Lagna is the true nature inside. Arudha Lagna is what finally manifests in society. A saint may have a lot of fire within; what manifests has to be soft.
• So judge the 3rd and 6th from Arudha Lagna:
  • 3rd from AL = the seed, the first instinct. Without it you do not even feel like fighting.
  • 6th from AL = actually fighting and finishing the enemy off.
• A saint fights only the enemies within — and that is seen from Lagna, not from Arudha Lagna.
• A student asks whether the 8th counts too. No: only the 3rd and 6th. Of the upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11), these two show how you fight.

Benefics vs. Malefics in 3H/6H from AL

Malefics There Are Not "Bad"

• For a businessman or politician, Mars in the 3rd and Saturn in the 6th from AL is good: it makes him ruthless. Saturn in the 6th from AL gives a lot of sorrow to enemies.
• The same combination in the chart of a supposed saint shows a problem.

When the House is Empty

• Look at the nature of the sign. A sign owned by a benefic is a benefic sign for this purpose; a sign owned by a malefic (PVNR's example: Capricorn) keeps some malefic nature even when empty, because its lord gives the results.
• Rāśi dṛṣṭi on the house comes next, and is only secondary.

Which Planets Count as Benefic

• Venus is always benefic. Only Mercury is sometimes benefic and sometimes malefic, depending on whom he joins.
• Sun is treated as a benefic in matters of dharma, marriage and the like, especially in a friendly sign.

Swami Jayendra Saraswati's Chart

• AL = Pisces.
• 3rd from AL = Taurus: empty, a benefic sign (Venus owns it). Rāśi dṛṣṭi on Taurus comes from Cancer, Libra and Capricorn — Sun (Cancer), Jupiter and Mars (Libra). Sun is in Moon's sign and the matter is dharma, so Sun counts as benefic: two benefics against one malefic.
• 6th from AL = Leo: Venus occupies it. Rāśi dṛṣṭi comes from Aries and Capricorn (empty) and Libra (Jupiter and Mars).
• Mars is the only troublemaker. He aspects both houses, so there can be some aggressive instinct and some aggressive follow-up, but Jupiter and Venus dominate him.
• The yoga is not 100% here, and very few charts have it at 100%. The benefic domination is clear: the chart is a saint's.

The Murder Charge

• By the chart, the charge of hiring men to murder Shankararaman is against his nature.
• Very likely the charges are false or framed — or somebody around him was involved and he had nothing to do with it.

First Step With a Saint's Chart: the 9th Lord

• The 9th is the house of dharma. See how strong it is and what influences it.
• Then see the ṣaṣṭyaṁśa (D-60 division) occupied by the 9th lord. It shows the kind of karma carried from all past lives, which defines the dharma followed in this one.
  • 9th lord in Rākṣasa ṣaṣṭyaṁśa: the dharma followed is that of demons. A killer, an assassin, a thug, a rogue — not a saint. Even if he wears the garb of a saint, he follows rākṣasa dharma.
  • 9th lord in Deva ṣaṣṭyaṁśa: godly karma in past lives; a subtle and noble dharma is given in this life.

Dharma is Not a Constant

• Each person gets his own dharma according to his evolution as a soul.
• PVNR's illustration: for an unlettered man who drives a bullock cart for a living, going to the temple and saying "Rama, Rama, Rama" each week is his dharma followed to the fullest. He does not have to teach astrology or spread religion.

What Moola Dasha Shows

• Moola Dasha shows when the results of past-life karma come to you in this life.
• You hurt somebody in the past life, somebody hurts you in this one; you did somebody a great favour, somebody does you one. Moola Dasha says when.
• It answers "why is this happening to me?" — which past-life karma is being activated now.

Swami's Chart

• 9th house from Capricorn lagna = Virgo; 9th lord = Mercury.
• Mercury is in Deva ṣaṣṭyaṁśa.
• Mercury's Moola Dasha: 1967–1981 (14 years, with the 12-year option below).
• So in Mercury's Moola Dasha a high dharma comes to him as the fruit of godly karma of past lives.
• PVNR did not remember the date he joined the Peetha — "sometime in the 1960s", possibly before 1967. Even if he was named successor before this dasha began, these 14 years defined his dharma: he learnt the Vedas, Vedāṅgas and all the Vedic knowledge from the previous Jagadguru, Swami Chandrasekharendra Saraswati.

What the Rāśi Chart Cannot Tell

• The rāśi chart only says the dharma is lofty. It does not say in what form it comes — as head of a maṭha, as an astrology teacher, as a software entrepreneur.
• For that, see the houses Mercury owns in the D-60 chart; that shows exactly what karma is unfinished from the last life. In judging Moola Dasha the D-60 is the most important chart.
• PVNR refuses to read the D-60 here because the birth time is not rectified.
• A student asks whether he had some part of dharma left unfinished and has to finish it now. PVNR: that is a possibility.

"Mercury being the 9th lord, he will define his dharma. And Mercury being in Devāṁśa, he will give a very lofty dharma to this person, and that will happen in Mercury's Moola Dasha."

The 0-or-12 Years Controversy

• A planet's Moola Dasha length comes from counting from the sign it occupies to its moolatrikona sign. Jupiter in Scorpio → Sagittarius is 1.
• If the planet is in its moolatrikona sign, the count can be taken as 0 or as 12.
• PVNR: by his experiments the 12-year option is better.
• Here Saturn is in his moolatrikona (Aquarius), so the two options shift the dates by 12 years. With 12, Mercury runs 1967–1981.

The Question That Prompted It

A student points out that in the 1990s the Swami left the maṭha for a few weeks and nearly gave up his sannyāsa. If he had "found himself" in Mercury's Moola Dasha, why that confusion?

PVNR's Answer

• Moola Dasha is not the dasha of finding oneself. It shows only when the result of past-life karma arrives.
• Finding oneself is not a single instant. It is continuous, through the whole life and through several lives.
• Atmakaraka Kendradi Graha Dasha is the one that shows the evolution of the soul within this life: how you discover yourself, or how you move away from what your soul wants; the confusions of the soul and the lessons it learns.
• The student notes that in that dasha Mercury runs 1987–2001. PVNR leaves the dasha for a later class.
