Lagna vs Moon Deep Teaching — Legislator vs Executive & Sarvatobhadra Chakra Intro
Lagna = executive: implements agenda, acts in the world, cannot contemplate — "a dumb servant." Moon = legislator: experiences the world through senses, processes impressions, forms the action agenda. To understand WHY someone acts: look at Moon. To understand HOW they act: look at Lagna. "Moon is the legislator who makes rules; Lagna is the executive who enforces them." Sarvatobhadra Chakra (SBC): nakshatra-based transit tool for looking at life force through planetary positions. Vedha = piercing/obstruction when a transiting planet contacts a natal nakshatra — can purify or obstruct. Latta = "kick" — unfavorable blow, especially bad on Janma Nakshatra. Planetary nakshatra aspects: every planet aspects 15th nakshatra from itself; Jupiter = 10, 15, 19; Saturn = 3, 5, 15, 19; Mars = 1, 3, 7, 8, 15; Sun/Moon = 14, 15. Retrograde planet: aspects go backward in direction.
"Moon forms the agenda; Lagna implements that agenda. Moon is the legislator; Lagna is the executive. If the mind is dead, you are basically God — you don't need a Lagna anymore."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Lagna vs. Moon — Deep Teaching (Revisited)
Moon = The Legislator Within
- Moon = mind
- Mind functions at 3 levels:
- Experiences the world (receives input through senses)
- Processes experiences — forms desires, impressions, synthesizes what you want to do
- Forms agenda for action — decides how you want to change/influence the world
- "Mind is that through which you experience the world AND that which synthesizes your response to it"
- "Mind is not just reaction — it is also the basis of action"
- "If mind is dead, you are basically God (jivanmukta) — you don't do anything"
Lagna = The Executive Within
- Lagna = that through which you actually act in the world
- Lagna implements the agenda set by Moon
- Lagna is "a dumb servant" — it acts, but does not contemplate
- "Moon forms the agenda; Lagna implements that agenda"
Combined Understanding
- To understand a person's actions: need BOTH Moon (agenda) and Lagna (implementation)
- To understand why someone acts a certain way: look at Moon's nakshatra, sign, etc.
- To understand how they act: look at Lagna's sign, lord, etc.
- "Moon is the legislator who makes rules; Lagna is the executive who enforces them"
Introduction to Sarvatobhadra Chakra (SBC)
What It Is
- Sarvatobhadra = "auspicious in all directions/rounds"
- A nakshatra-based chakra (diagram) for looking at overall life force through transit
- One of the principal tools for nakshatra-based transit analysis
- Shows transit influences on the natal nakshatra pattern
Vedha — The Key Concept in SBC
- Vedha (primary meaning = to pierce; secondary = obstruction) — when a transiting planet has Vedha on a natal nakshatra, it:
- Purifies or
- Obstructs that nakshatra's energy
- "Nature of planet slightly modifies because of Vedha"
- Vedha = a kind of aspect or influence in the SBC framework
Latta — The Unfavorable Blow
- Latta = a "kick" or blow
- If a planet has Latta on the Janma Nakshatra (natal Moon's star, shown in red) → unfavorable for the native
- "Planet having Latta is generally not good"
- In JH software: right-click → "Highlight Rasis and Latta" to see Latta placements
Planetary Nakshatra Aspects in SBC
Each planet has special nakshatra aspects (beyond the zodiacal 7th house aspect):
| Planet | Nakshatra Aspects From Its Position |
|---|---|
| Sun, Moon | 14th and 15th nakshatras from them |
| Mars | 1st, 3rd, 7th, 8th, and 15th nakshatras |
| Mercury, Venus | 1st and 15th nakshatras |
| Jupiter | 10th, 15th, and 19th nakshatras |
| Saturn | 3rd, 5th, 15th, and 19th nakshatras |
Note: The 15th nakshatra is common to all = every planet aspects the 15th nakshatra from itself.
Speed Affects Direction of Aspect
- Retrograde (vakri) planet: aspects go backward (full aspect in backward direction)
- Normal speed: aspect in direct forward direction
- Fast moving: full aspect in forward direction
- Moon's normal speed ≈ 13°/day; fast = >13°
Upagrahas (Sub-Planets) in SBC
| Upagraha | "Parent" / Type |
|---|---|
| Kala | Son of Sun |
| Artha Prahara | Son of Mercury (discriminates, differentiates) |
| Yamaghantaka | Son of Jupiter |
| Gulika | Son of Saturn |
| Mrityu | Related to Mars (Mrityu Sahama) |
- If any upagraha occupies a nakshatra that becomes active in Tribhagi: propitiate that nakshatra's deity
- "If Kala, Mrityu, or Gulika is in the currently active nakshatra, worship the deity of that nakshatra"
