"In mundane charts, you are reading the birth chart of a nation or an event — not a person. The same house principles apply, but they refer to the nation's affairs."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Mundane Astrology — Introduction

Mundane astrology studies groups of people (countries, communities, companies, institutions) rather than individuals.

Why It's Different from Individual Charts

  • In a person's chart, there is a clear "soul" (Atman), a body, a mind — all well-defined
  • In a country's chart, these are conceptual: What is the soul of India? What is the body of the US?
  • The birth moment of a country (when a new existence begins) is often contested or ambiguous
  • For some countries like India (August 15, 1947, midnight — unambiguous) it works perfectly
  • For US: 10+ different charts are used by different scholars, none is clearly correct
  • PVNR tried all major US charts; none gave satisfactory results

Vimshottari Dasha for Countries — Questionable but Used

  • Parashara says: 120 years = paramayush for human beings in Kali Yuga
  • For horses, elephants, crows, etc., different paramayush values are given
  • Why should a country have the same 120-year paramayush as a human?
  • Using 120-year Vimshottari for a country that may live for thousands of years is questionable
  • However, astrologers do use it and get some results, so it's not entirely wrong
  • Annual charts (Tithi Pravesha equivalent) are not questionable because they compress to 1 year regardless of paramayush

Mundane Calendars — Complete Overview

The key insight: Use the right calendar for the right purpose. Do not try to see everything from one chart. Different communities in India independently developed different calendars, and each is best suited for specific areas of life.

Solar Calendars (Saura Mana)

CalendarTriggerWhat It Shows
Mesha SankrantiSun enters AriesPolitical happenings at high levels — political intrigues, top-level policy
Makara SankrantiSun enters CapricornPolitical happenings at mass level — how the masses react to politics; also Kali Yuga events
Ardra PraveshSun enters Ardra Nakshatra (6°40' Gemini)Meteorological purposes — weather patterns, rainfall, natural phenomena

Why Capricorn for Kali Yuga? Capricorn is Saturn's sign (Tamasic), and Mars is exalted there (another Tamasic planet). Jupiter gets debilitated in Capricorn — dharma is debilitated in this sign. Both Saturn and Mars are strongly connected to Capricorn in Kali Yuga. (Chinese New Year is also Sun-Moon conjunction in Capricorn = Magha Shukla Pratipada.)

— PVNR

Why Gemini for weather? 3rd house is associated with weather and natural phenomena; Gemini is the 3rd sign of the natural zodiac. Both Ardra Pravesh (in Gemini) and Ashadha Shukla Pratipada (Sun-Moon in Gemini) relate to weather.

— PVNR

Amanta Lunar Calendars (Month Ends with New Moon / Amavasya)

CalendarTriggerWhat It Shows
Chaitra Shukla PratipadaSun + Moon conjoin in PiscesGeneral mundane events in the country; overall year outlook; most widely used by Telugu, Kannada people
Kartika Shukla PratipadaSun + Moon conjoin in LibraFinancial events — business, commerce, stocks, financial health; used by Marwaris, business communities
Ashadha Shukla PratipadaSun + Moon conjoin in GeminiWeather patterns — natural calamities, heavy rain, climate extremities
Magha Shukla PratipadaSun + Moon conjoin in CapricornKali Yuga events — strife, societal conflict, adharma; used as New Year by Chinese calendar

Why Libra for finances? 7th sign of natural zodiac = house of business, trade, partnerships. Symbol of Libra = the scales of a balance — used by both the goddess of justice AND the businessman.

— PVNR

How month names are given (Amanta):

  • The nakshatra where the Full Moon will fall in that month gives the month its name
  • If Moon will be in Chitra star at Full Moon → that month is called Chaitra
  • If Moon will be in Vishakha star → Vaishakha
  • This shows that even the Amanta calendar has a deep connection to the Full Moon

Shuklanta Lunar Calendar (Month Ends with Full Moon)

CalendarTriggerWhat It Shows
Vaishakha PurnimaSun in Aries + Moon exactly opposite in LibraSpiritual aspects of the country — how dharma is upheld, spiritual events, religious leaders
  • Used in Orissa, Bengal, Tamil Nadu as the main New Year
  • Full Moon = auspicious for spirituality: Moon (mind) is in 7th from Sun (soul); mind desires the soul = spiritual seeking
  • All full-moon-based calendars focus on spirituality and spiritual events

Why seashore, caves, mountains for spiritual practices?

  • Pisces = seashore, middle of ocean, hermitages of Maharshis (rishis), prisons, hospitals — all watery places and places of bandhana
  • Capricorn = marshlands (Bhumi sign with crocodile — part land, part water)
  • Aquarius = mountains, hills, mountainous regions

Mundane Chart House Meanings

For any mundane chart cast for a country, the houses mean:

HouseCountry Meaning
1H (Lagna)Overall existence and well-being of the country; how the people feel in general
2HResources: money, food, agriculture, natural resources, staff, finances
3HInitiative, boldness, bravery; short travels; also weather/climate
4HHomeland, territory, comforts; agriculture (related to 2H)
6HWar, military conflicts, enemies
7HForeign policy, international relations, interaction with other nations
8HInstability, anxiety, unrest among people; borrowing/debt; inheritance; upheaval
9HDharma, judiciary (courts upholding law), religion, spiritual institutions, churches
10HExecutive branch of government — karma of governance, administration
11HGains of the country; friends of the country; allies
12HLosses

Key interpretive principles:

  • 10th house = administration (governance) — inanimate
  • 10th lord = administrator (governor/president) — animate; the one responsible for governance
  • Occupants of 10H = other people (ministers, lobbyists, legislators) who have their own agendas and intervene in governance
  • 9th lord = judiciary — judges, also religious/spiritual leaders
  • The 9th house covers both courts (upholding material law) and religious institutions (upholding spiritual law)

Analyzing the Mundane Chart

General Principles

  1. Check lagna and lagna lord — strong = country in good shape overall; weak/afflicted = anxiety/instability
  2. Check 2nd lord — strong = good resources/finances; afflicted = financial concern
  3. Check 10th lord — strong = executive does well; in Raj Yoga = lucky period for the ruling party
  4. Check 6th house — afflicted = war/conflict; malefics in 6H = aggressive posture
  5. Papakathari on any house = troubles to that area

Benefics vs Malefics in Mundane Charts

  • For benefics: well-placed means in kendras/trines (from lagna)
  • For malefics: well-placed means in 3H, 6H, 11H (Upachayas)
  • These same rules apply in mundane charts as in individual charts

Example Analysis: US Lunar New Year (March 20, 2004 — Chaitra Shukla Pratipada at Washington DC)

Lagna: Leo (Sun is LL)

  • Sun (LL) in 8H = anxiety for the country; country's fundamental existence colored by uncertainty, instability
  • Jupiter (8L) in Lagna = exchange (Parivartana) between 1H and 8H = Duryoga
  • Conclusion: Lagna lord in 8H + exchange of 1st and 8th → country full of anxiety; will not be relaxed
  • Jupiter is LL's exchanged partner → they are in friendly signs → better than, say, Mars-Saturn Duryoga, but still inauspicious

2nd Lord (Mercury) in 8H:

  • 2nd = resources; 8H = borrowing, debt, anxiety
  • The financial resources of the country are tied to borrowing; debt will be on people's minds
  • Result: Country will continue to borrow; no fiscal responsibility expected this year

9H-10H Parivartana (Mars + Venus):

  • Mars (9L = judiciary) in 10H; Venus (10L = executive) in 9H → Raja Yoga
  • But Mars and Venus are terrible enemies → they will work together but with friction
  • Conclusion: There will be clashes between the judiciary and the executive, but ultimately things will work out

3H analysis (war/initiative):

  • Ketu in 3H = headless, thoughtless, dumb aggression
  • Mars (aspecting by Rasi drishti) = reinforces aggression
  • Jupiter (aspecting by Rasi drishti) = brings some logical second thoughts about peace
  • Conclusion: Country continues war with aggressive posture; Jupiter's influence creates some desire to get allies on board and think about peace

6L in 11H:

  • 6L (Saturn) whose agenda is war, placed in the house of friends → the country goes to its friends and says "support our war"
  • Not a good year for genuine friendship; allies are being pressed into supporting wars
  • 11L in 8H = not a good year for friends/allies either

Foreign Policy (Navamsha):

  • Navamsha = dharma and relationships chart → right chart for foreign policy
  • In Navamsha: Jupiter (LL) in 10H → in charge of foreign policy; doing Jupiterian karma = good period for diplomacy and cooperation
  • Moon (8L) in 10H → Moon's period = bad for foreign travel and relations

Election Analysis — Makara Sankranti Chart (Jan 14, 2004)

Why Makara Sankranti chart for elections?: Sun-enters-Capricorn chart shows high-level political mechanics and outcomes better than the general Lunar New Year chart (which shows how people feel generally).

Finding the Ruling Party/King

  • 10th house = administration/governance (inanimate)
  • 10th lord = the actual ruler/president (animate)
  • Occupants and aspectors of 10H = other players who influence governance (legislators, lobbyists)

For the 2004 US election (Makara Sankranti chart):

  • LL Venus in 10H = governance is good for the country; executive is working for country's well-being
  • 10th lords = Rahu and Saturn (both rule Aquarius) → determine stronger
    • Count aspects: Mercury aspects Saturn (2 votes), Jupiter aspects Rahu (1 vote) → Saturn is stronger
  • Take Saturn as the ruler's significator → Saturn is in 2H (resources)
  • Venus (5L) in 9H from Saturn = trine lord in another trine = blessings; things come easily; lucky period
  • Conclusion: Ruler gets lucky — wins without the prolonged fight everyone expected

Finding the Opposition Party/Leader

  • 6th house from 10H = 3H = opposition party
  • 3rd lord = Moon (for this chart) = leader of opposition
  • Moon's placement: Take Moon as ASC for the opponent → Venus is in 6H from Moon → Marak position (2nd from 5H = end of power quest)
  • Venus here is also 9th lord with Papakathari around him → protection of the opposition is destroyed
  • Conclusion: Not only Kerry, the entire Democratic party suffers heavy losses — consistent with what actually happened

PVNR's Observation: In the last ~6 US elections, at the time of the election, the antardasha in the Lunar New Year chart was always Mercury's (even as the main dasha changed). Mercury = karaka for counting of votes, for taking diverse views and forming one conclusion — the election process itself.

Financial New Year Chart Analysis

US Financial Chart (Kartika Shukla Pratipada, Nov 12, 2004)

  • Both Lagna lords (Mars + Ketu) in 12H: Major weakness
  • 8L in Lagna: 8th house of anxiety and borrowing — country's financial existence governed by the principle of borrowing
  • Conclusion: Terrible financial year for US — deep concern about borrowing and debt; not a year of financial growth

India Financial Chart (Same Date, Different Lagna — Gemini)

  • LL Mercury in 6H:
    • 6H = Upachaya (growth and accumulation)
    • Mercury is specifically suited to 6H and 8H (accumulation-oriented planet)
    • For financial charts, LL in Upachaya = good for accumulation of wealth
  • 4H Raj Yoga: Jupiter (10L) + Venus (5L + 12L) in 4H
    • Both aspecting Lagna by Rasi drishti
    • 5th and 10th lords in Raj Yoga = excellent for the country
    • Venus gives more 5th house results (5H > 12H in strength)
  • Conclusion: Good year financially for India — wealth accumulation, raja yoga active → better than US

Annual Full Moon Chart — Spiritual/Dharma Analysis

Vaishakha Purnima Chart (US)

Sun in Aries, Moon exactly opposite in Libra = important for spiritual events and dharma in the country.

Analysis of 9H (dharma sthana):

  • 6th lord Moon and Ketu are in 9H, within 3° of each other = eclipse happening in 9H
  • This is a solar eclipse (Sun and Moon involved with Rahu-Ketu axis)
  • Sun and Moon being eclipsed by nodes is extremely terrible (worse than eclipse of other planets)
  • The eclipse is in the dharmasthana (9H) itself → adharma will prevail in the country during this year
  • Moon is Bhatrikaraka (DK or BK per context) → in country's charts, BK shows spiritual leaders
  • When BK is eclipsed by nodes in the 9H → spiritual leaders of the country face trouble

Papakathari on 9th Lord:

  • Take 9th lord Venus as Lagna
  • From Venus: Saturn and Mars in 2H (one side) + Sun and Rahu in 12H (other side)
  • = Papakathari from 4 malefics on all sides
  • 9H lord under Papakathari from 4 malefics → those who uphold dharma are in deep trouble
  • Sun + Rahu in 12H from 9L = imprisonment of spiritual leaders possible during this year

Amanta Chart for US (April 8, 2005) — Gandanta Eclipse Chart

New Year starts during a solar eclipse (eclipse starts 12:51 PM, ends 5:18 PM; New Year chart is within this window).

Gandanta:

  • Gandanta = border between fire and water signs
  • The three Gandanta points: Pisces–Aries border, Cancer–Leo border, Scorpio–Sagittarius border
  • These are inauspicious — the last degree of a water sign and first degree of a fire sign are extremely unstable
  • Rahu is at 29° Pisces = in the most extreme Gandanta point → highly inauspicious
  • Rahu (at 29° Pisces) is eclipsing Sun and Moon at 25° Pisces

Chart Assessment:

  • LL in 8H (afflicted by Gandanta Rahu) = country starts the year with anxiety and turmoil
  • 6H with exalted Mars = country will be very aggressive militarily
  • Does not look like a great year for US; more anxiety and aggression expected

7H (Foreign Policy) in this chart:

  • Venus (exalted) + Rahu in 7H
  • Venus + Rahu = planets of diplomacy (Rahu is primary karaka for diplomacy; Venus secondary)
  • Both strong in 7H = good diplomatic engagement with other nations
  • But Mercury retrograde in exaltation in Lagna (with Ketu) = indecision, confusion about steps to take
  • Final conclusion: More diplomacy than past years, but also more confusion and some headless decisions

Key principle: Rahu + Venus = diplomatically clever; this combination is both about real diplomacy (Venus's beauty and relationships) and false diplomacy (Rahu's manipulation). "Diplomacy is a demonic thing" — the karaka is Rahu.

Vimshottari Dasha in Mundane Charts

Which Vimshottari Seed to Use?

In natal charts, Moon is almost always the seed (even if Lagna is slightly stronger, Moon still works).

In mundane charts, this rule is relaxed:

  • If Lagna is stronger than Moon (more planets in kendras from Lagna) → use Lagna Vimshottari
  • This gives far better results in mundane charts

Note: In Lunar New Year charts, Moon is almost always stronger because Sun and Moon are together at the time of chart casting, so Moon naturally attracts many planets into its kendras. But always check and verify.

— PVNR
  • Utpanna Tara (5th star from Moon's nakshatra) = another possible seed; if it shows more planets in kendras than both Moon and Lagna → use Utpanna Tara Vimshottari

Dasha Compression:

  • Normally Vimshottari = 120 years
  • For annual mundane charts, the software compresses the entire 120 years to fit within the New Year's duration (from one new year chart to the next)
  • This gives you very accurate sub-period timing within the year
