BPHS Ch.24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 7–12: AL in 10th/5th/9th, Scholar/King/Renunciant Results & Why 8th = Emotional Instability

BPHS Chapter 24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 7–12

The class picks up at verse 7; lagna lord in houses 1–6 was done earlier. The teacher's purpose is to show how each result is derived, not to hand out verdicts:

"Take it with a pinch of salt. This is just to show you how to think."

Lagna Lord in 7th House

If the lagna lord is a malefic: the wife will not live long.

If the lagna lord is a (functional) benefic: a traveller (aṭana), or poor (daridra), or detached (virakta), or a king (nṛpa).

Why the wife is short-lived (malefic):

• Take the 7th house as the wife's lagna. The native's lagna lord is her 7th lord — a māraka for her.
• The 8th is the house of longevity; the 7th breaks longevity.
• A malefic māraka sitting in her 1st house can harm her body and shorten her life.
• If the lagna lord is a benefic, this need not happen.

Why a traveller:

• The 3rd is the main house of travel; the 7th is the secondary one. The 7th has the 5th-house argala on the 3rd.
• The 3rd is one specific journey. The 7th is long journeys — being on a big trip and moving from place to place.

Why poor:

• The 7th is the 6th from the 2nd house of wealth. The 6th is fight and obstacles.
• So he fights to accumulate money.
• "It doesn't necessarily mean he will be poor, but if he is really rich, he will probably not have to fight."
• A planet in the 7th shows the person's fighting spirit for money.

Why detached:

• The teacher does not accept this one. Detachment is seen from other houses, not the 7th.
• "I am also not really convinced why the lagna lord in the 7th house should give detachment… I will not even be surprised if there is some typo there."

Why a king:

• The 7th is the 11th from the 9th — gain of fortune.
• The 7th is the house of dealing with people. One who deals with many people is probably influential.
• Arudha Lagna: the lagna lord is 7th from lagna; the 7th from him is lagna again. An ārūḍha cannot fall in the house itself or its 7th, so take the 10th from there: AL is in the 10th house.
• From AL the lagna lord is in the 10th (the 7th is 10th from the 10th) — the house of work in society. A benefic lagna lord there gives great work in society.
• He need not be a literal king — an influential person.

Lagna Lord in 8th House

Results: an accomplished scholar (siddha-vidyā-viśārada), diseased (rogī), a thief (caura), very angry (mahākrodhī), a gambler (dyūtī), going after others' wives (paradāraga).

Why an accomplished scholar:

• A student asks whether this means occult knowledge. The verse does not say so — it says a scholar in general.
• The 4th is the process of learning. The 5th is the 2nd (accumulated wealth) from the 4th — what you accumulate as you learn. The 5th is the scholarship you possess.
• The 8th has a strong 4th-house argala on the 5th.
• The 8th is the house of occult knowledge, but it matters for knowledge in general. Lagna lord there makes a person very knowledgeable, not only in the occult.

Why diseased:

• The 8th is a house of disease. With the lagna lord there, the person's intelligence is always on disease and what to do about it.

Why a thief:

• The 8th is the house of suddenness — sudden gain and sudden loss. Unexpected inheritance is seen from it.
• That is gaining after somebody else falls. The 8th is the house of gaining at somebody else's cost.
• It can show a thief, but not necessarily.

Why very angry:

• Emotional stability is seen from the 5th. The 8th has argala on the 5th, so planets in the 8th have a bearing on it.
• This applies when the planet is of that nature. With Sagittarius rising and Jupiter in Cancer, do not say he will be very angry. If the planet is Mars or like Mars, apply it.

"Look at the planets in the 8th house to see the nature of emotions of the person. Is he emotionally stable and calm, or is he very unstable and very irritable."

Why a gambler:

• The 8th is the house of suddenness and of the gambling spirit — risk-taking.
• People with a strong 8th or important planets in the 8th do not take the normal way. They take big risks. Whether the risks work depends on the strength of the planet and the yoga.
• Dyūta is literally dice. It does not mean he rolls dice every time. He is a born risk-taker.

Why going after others' wives:

• The 7th is the house of desire. The 8th has the 2nd-house argala — the argala of resources — on the 7th.
• If the planet is conducive, the desire is strong and needs to be fulfilled. He may be licentious.
• In other combinations interest in other women comes because the wife is short-lived or sickly. Here it is simply strong desire.

A student's question — does lagna lord in the 8th (2nd from the 7th, a māraka house) break the marriage?

• Possible, no guarantee. For the longevity of the first marriage the 7th house and the 7th lord count more than the lagna lord.
• 3rd and 8th are one kind of house; 2nd and 7th are another. The trouble comes when the two kinds mix: 7th lord in the 8th, 3rd lord in the 2nd, 2nd lord in the 3rd, 8th lord in the 7th.
• Lagna lord in the 2nd is, counted from the 7th, the 7th lord in the 8th — more serious. That is where Parāśara gave two wives.
• Lagna lord in the 8th does not by itself mean a short-lived wife.

Lagna Lord in 9th House

Results — no negatives are given: fortunate (bhāgyavān), loved by people (janavallabha), devotee of Viṣṇu (viṣṇubhakta), very talented (paṭu), eloquent (vāgmī), has wife, sons and wealth.

Why fortunate: the 9th is the house of fortune.

Why loved by people:

• Do not take the 7th of interacting with people — the 9th has no argala on it. Take the 5th house of following.
• The 9th is the 5th from the 5th and has argala on it. And the Arudha Lagna falls in the 5th (9th from the 9th).
• So this is a big following, like a star, a politician or an actor — not being liked by Tom, Dick and Harry.

Why a devotee of Viṣṇu:

• Not necessarily Viṣṇu. He may worship Śiva, Allah, Mother Mary. The 9th is the house of religion: he is dharmic, religious, pious.

Why talented:

• The 5th house of abilities contains the Arudha Lagna, and the 9th has argala on it.

Why eloquent:

• A student offers the 3rd house of communication. The teacher: speech is the 2nd; the 3rd is general communication.
• Eloquence is about the perceived speech, so count from the Arudha Lagna. AL is in the 5th; the 2nd from it is the 6th.
• The 9th has the 4th-house argala on the 6th. Planets in the 9th govern how the world perceives his speech.
• The planet must itself be one conducive to good speech. Lagna lord in the 9th alone is not enough.

Lagna Lord in 10th House

Results: happiness from the father (pitṛ-saukhya-samanvita), honoured by kings (nṛpa-mānya), famous among people (jane khyāta), wealth earned by himself (svārjita-sva).

Why happiness from the father: the 10th has a strong argala on the 9th house of father.

Why honoured and famous:

• The 10th is the house of one's activities in society and of the respect one commands there. It is also called the siṁhāsana sthāna — the house of the throne.
• Not necessarily kings or politicians. He is respected and well known.

Why self-made:

• The 10th house of karma — the person's own actions — is strong.
• The 8th is getting money easily, at another's cost, or by inheritance. The 10th has no argala on the 8th, so planets in the 10th cannot give the results of the 8th.

Lagna Lord in 11th House

Results: always gaining (sadā lābha-samanvita), good character (suśīla), fame (khyāta, kīrti), many wives and many good qualities (bahu-dāra-guṇair yuta).

Why always gaining: the 11th is the house of material gains and profits.

Why fame: the 11th is the 2nd from the 10th house of respect in society.

Why good character:

• Lagna is the basic house for character. The 11th has argala on lagna — the conclusive, final argala. The lagna lord has argala on his own house and gives good health and good character.
• The Arudha Lagna falls in the 9th (11th from the 11th) — the house of dharma. He is seen as a righteous person, not as a ruthless exploiter, even if he has several relationships.

Why many wives:

• A student: he makes a lot of profit, so he can afford them. The teacher accepts that as common sense and asks for more.
• The 11th is the 5th from the 7th. The 5th from any house is the person's ability in that matter. So the 11th is the ability to forge and keep up relations with people — which is why it is the house of friends.
• The 7th is also romantic and sexual relations. So the 11th can show the ability to forge relationships with many people.
• Several combinations in this chapter give many wives, each with a different shade. Here it is because the person is a smooth handler of people.

Good character and many wives — a contradiction? (a student's question)

• Like "poor or a king" for the 7th, these are possibilities. Each result comes from a different factor: character from the argala on lagna, relationships from the argala on the 7th.
• To choose, see the lagna lord's relationship with the 7th lord and with the kārakas — Jupiter and Sun for good character, Venus for sexual relationships — and consult the navāṁśa and other divisional charts.
• Having relationships with many people is not in itself bad character. Ethics, and even astrological rules, are judged by deśa-kāla-pātra — place, time, and the person's culture.
• In old days several wives who knew of each other and were content was not held against a man. Draupadī had five husbands, spent a year with each, and while with one did not even think of another. She is held to be of spotless character.

Lagna Lord in 12th House

Results: no bodily comfort (deha-saukhya-vivarjita), wasteful spender (vyartha-vyayī), very angry (mahākrodhī) — if devoid of the conjunction or aspect of a benefic (śubha-dṛg-yoga-varjite).

Why no bodily comfort:

• The 12th is the house of giving up, letting go, losing, not having. Lagna is overall well-being; its lord is in the house of loss of well-being.
• He is not healthy and not in good physical shape. (A student adds the aspect on the 6th house of obstacles; the teacher agrees.)

Why a spender:

• The 12th is the house of spending. His intelligence is always on his spending. He spends easily, without thinking much.
• The teacher calls "wasteful" unfair. If the lagna lord is a friend of the 9th lord, he may be giving to dharmic causes — a temple, a church. Wasteful spending is one possibility.

Why very angry:

• The 8th is one house that shows anger, and the 12th has argala on the 8th.
• Emotional stability is the 5th, and the 12th is the 8th from the 5th. Planets in the 12th trouble emotional stability.
• If the planet is one that gives anger, it makes him very angry.

"Whether anger or not, whether he gives irritability or not, he will basically spoil the emotional stability of the person, the judgment of the person, the discretion of the person."

The exception: with the aspect or conjunction of a functional benefic these results are toned down to a large extent.

Renunciation (in answer to a student):

• The 12th is the house of renouncing. A strong 12th, especially with the lagna lord there, is conducive to renouncing the self.
• "Renouncing material things is bad for material people, but good for spiritual people."

Arudha Lagna Stated in This Class

The teacher does not give the Arudha Lagna for the lagna lord in the 8th, 10th or 12th.

On Practice

Before the charts the teacher repeats his standing advice:

"As long as you know the fundamental building blocks, you can directly go to practice, because there are no real thumb rules that work all the time. It is a matter of multiple parameters, multiple factors that you are balancing."
