BPHS Ch.24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 7–12: AL in 10th/5th/1st/9th/6th, Scholar/King/Renunciant Results & Why 8th = Emotional Instability
LL in 7H: if malefic = wife short-lived (native's LL = wife's 7L = Maraka placed in her 1H); if benefic = traveler (7H=long journeys) OR poor (6th from 2H = fighting for wealth) OR king (AL falls in 10H — cannot be in 1st/7th, take 10th from 7th = 10H; from AL, LL in 10th = influential in society). LL in 8H: accomplished scholar (8H has strong Argala on 5H; deep/occult knowledge); diseases; thief/benefiting at others' cost; very angry (8H disturbs 5H emotional stability); risk-taker (Jyota); licentious (2nd Argala on 7H = resources for desire). LL in 9H: all positive — fortune, large following (9H has 4th Argala on 5H of followers), religious, talented (AL in 5H), eloquent (4th Argala on 6H=perceived speech from AL). LL in 10H: father's happiness (Argala on 9H); honored by kings; famous; self-made (10H has no Argala on 8H = no inherited success); AL in 1H. LL in 11H: always profitable (11H = gains); good character (AL in 9H = dharmic image seen by world; 11th Argala on 1H strengthens lagna); fame; multiple relationships (11H = 5th from 7H = skill at relationships). LL in 12H: no bodily comfort; spendthrift (12H = expenditure); very angry (12H disturbs 5H emotional stability from 8th from 5H = 12H); natural renunciant = bad for material life, good for spiritual; offset by benefic aspect. 12H = renunciation; LL there = intelligence directed at loss/giving up.
"Lagna lord in 9th — all positive results. He has a large following: 9th house has strong Argala on the 5th house of followers. The Arudha Lagna falls in the 5th house. From AL, his lagna lord is in the 5th — abilities strongly activated, world sees him as talented. All positive, no negatives."

BPHS Chapter 24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 7–12
Lagna Lord in 7th House
If malefic planet:
- Wife will not live long (short-lived wife)
If benefic planet:
- Traveler (unstable, moves from place to place)
- OR poor / financially struggling
- OR detached / no interest in pleasures
- OR a king / highly influential person
Why wife is short-lived when lagna lord is malefic in 7th:
- Taking 7th house as lagna (wife's reference), the native's lagna lord = her 7th lord = Maraka for her
- A malefic Maraka placed in the wife's 1st house (= native's 7th) can harm her longevity
Why traveler when benefic:
- 7th house is the house of long journeys (vs 3rd house for short journeys)
- "7th house shows being on a big trip and going from one place to another place and keep moving"
Why poor when benefic:
- Lagna lord in 7th = 6th from 2nd house (wealth house)
- 6th from wealth = fighting to accumulate money, struggling for wealth
- "If he is really rich, he probably doesn't have to fight"
Why a king when benefic:
- Arudha Lagna calculation: When lagna lord is in 7th, you can't place AL in lagna or 7th (exception rule); take 10th from 7th = 10th house
- So AL is in the 10th house (= house of career, position, respect in society)
- From AL, lagna lord is in the 10th = great work and actions in the society
- "The person is influential in the society — whether or not they have a literal kingdom"
Lagna Lord in 8th House

- Diseases (Rogi)
- Thief / one who gains at others' cost (Taurau)
- Very angry (Mahakrodhi)
- Gambler / risk-taker (Jyotara)
- Interested in others' wives / licentious (Paradaragaha)
Why accomplished scholar:
- 8th house has strong Argala on the 5th house (4th house Argala from 5th)
- 5th house = scholarship; 8th house planets intervene powerfully on scholarship
- In general: 8th house is the house of occult knowledge, deep knowledge
- "Planets in 8th house, especially if lagna lord, make a person very knowledgeable — not just occult, but in general"
Why diseases:
- 8th house is the house of disease; lagna lord there = person's attention is always on overcoming illness
- Person may suffer from or be preoccupied with disease
Why thief / gaining at others' cost:
- 8th house is the house of sudden gain AND sudden loss
- Inheritance, unexpected windfalls = 8th house
- "Gaining from somebody else's fall — that is shown by the 8th house"
- Not necessarily a literal thief; can mean benefiting at another's expense
Why very angry:
- 8th house has Argala on 5th house (emotional stability house)
- Planets in 8th affect emotional stability
- "Whether anger or not, the 12th house placement will spoil the emotional stability and discretion of the person"
- Rule: Look at 8th house planets to see the nature of a person's emotional state
Why gambler / risk-taker:
- 8th house = suddenness; also the house of risk-taking spirit
- "People with strong 8th house are born risk-takers — they don't take the normal way"
- Jyota (dice) literally = gambling, but means bold risk-taker
Why interested in others' wives:
- 7th house = desire; 8th house has 2nd house Argala (resource Argala) on 7th
- 8th house provides the resources for the 7th house desire
- "He may be licentious — strong desire that needs to be fulfilled"

Why eloquent speaker:
- AL is in 5th house
- 2nd from AL (speech) = 6th house
- 9th house has 4th house Argala on 6th house

- 10th house itself = house of respect and honor in society
- "He is the Simhasana Sthana — the house of the Crown"
Why self-made:
- 10th house is the house of karma and personal actions
- 8th house = gaining at others' cost / inheritance; 10th does NOT have Argala on 8th
- "Planets in 10th house cannot give the result of 8th house" = no inherited success
- Therefore success must come from his own effort

- Lagna lord in its own Argala house strengthens the lagna
- Also: AL falls in 9th house (count 11th from 11th = 9th)
- The image of the person is in the house of dharma — "seen as a righteous person"
Why many relationships:
- 11th house is 5th from 7th house
- 5th from any house = abilities relating to that house's signification
- 11th from 7th (romantic relations) = skill at forging and maintaining relationships
- "11th house is the house of friends — gives the ability to have relationships with many people"
PVNR's note on multiple relationships and culture: "In today's world we judge this negatively. But in ancient India, having multiple wives with everyone's knowledge and consent was not bad character. Draupadi had 5 husbands and is considered a person of spotless character — during each husband's year, her mind didn't think of the others." The judgment of "good or bad" is always desh-kala-patra (place, time, and cultural context).
Lagna Lord in 12th House

EXCEPTION: If a functional benefic aspects or conjoins lagna lord in 12th, these results are "toned down to a large extent."
Why no bodily comfort:
- Lagna = overall well-being; 12th = house of loss and giving up
- Lagna lord in the house of loss of well-being = cannot give physical comfort
- Person is not healthy, not physically in great shape
Why spendthrift:
- 12th house IS the house of spending and expenditure
- Lagna lord there = person's intelligence always focused on spending
- "He may be spending on good causes — not necessarily wasteful, but he spends easily without restraint"
Why angry:
- 8th house Argala from 5th = emotional stability house (8th from 5th = 12th)
- Planets in 12th disturb emotional stability and judgment
- Also: 12th has Argala on 8th house of anger
PVNR note on 12th house: "12th house is the house of renunciation. Lagna lord in 12th makes the person a natural renunciant. That is bad for material life but good for spiritual life."
