Verse 61 — Benefic on the 11th from Karakamsa

Verse: "Svāṁśād ekādaśe sthāne śubha-kheṭa-yutekṣite, bhrātṛ-saukhya-yuto bālaḥ sarva-kāryeṣu lābha-kṛt."

Karakamsa: the Atmakaraka signifies the soul. The sign he occupies in a divisional chart is the Karakamsa. It shows the inner sense of self.

Condition: a functional benefic conjoins or aspects (yuta / īkṣita) the 11th house from Karakamsa.

Result:

1. Bhrātṛ-saukhya-yuto — happiness from siblings; a good relation with them. See it in D3, the chart of siblings.
2. Sarva-kāryeṣu lābha-kṛt — profitable and fortunate in all endeavours. See it in D10, the chart of the works of the person.

D1 and the divisional charts (said for the guests in class):

• D1, the rāśi chart, is the physical chart. It shows the body — looks, health.
• The other charts are abstract. Work done, knowledge held, religiousness are not physical; each Dn throws light on one such area.

Verse 62 — Malefic in the 11th from Karakamsa

Condition: a functional malefic (sa-pāpe) in the 11th. The verse does not name the reference; it is the same Karakamsa.

Result:

• Kumārga-lābha-kṛt — he makes profit by a devious, bad path: wrong, illegal or immoral things.
• Vikhyāto vikramī caiva — nevertheless well known and bold. "Could be infamous, but at least he is known among people."
• Nātra saṁśayaḥ — there is no doubt.

Why: the three Kama Trikonas are 3rd, 7th and 11th.

• 3rd — the seed, the initiative from which desires are born.
• 7th — the desire itself and its pursuit.
• 11th — the culmination: fulfilment of desires, profits.

"If that house from the Karakamsa contains any planet, benefic or malefic, the person will be lucky. Any planet influencing that house will give the person gains materially. However, depending on the nature of the planet, if it is a good planet, it will be through a good path. If it's a bad planet, it will be through a bad path."

Verses 63-64 — The 12th from Karakamsa: Good and Bad Expenses

Good planet in the 12th from Karakamsa → sad-vyaya: expenditure on good deeds. The house the planet owns tells the cause:

• 4th lord — buying a house, good clothes, jewellery.
• 5th lord — scholarship, books; or expenses for one's children and their schooling.
• 7th lord — the spouse; or growing the business, a partnership.
• 9th lord — father or religion: building a temple or church, founding a religious organisation.

Malefic there (a planet owning bad houses) → expenses on a bad matter:

• 6th lord — court cases and litigation, curing a sickness, fighting enemies.

Which chart? (a student's question)

Money is one chart; litigation is D6; sickness is D6 and D30. So which one is used?

• D2 is the chart of wealth and all financial dealings. A planet in the 12th from Karakamsa in D2 shows expenses. The 12th is not only losing: it is also spending on purpose, donating, giving away. "12th house is the house of letting things go."
• What that planet stands for is read from the other charts:
  • It has a strong link to the 9th house in D20 → he spends heavily on religious and pious acts.
  • It has a strong link to the 6th house in D9 (6th = quarrels with the spouse, separation, divorce — the loss of the 7th) → a costly divorce: a large settlement or a long litigation. The teacher knows one such chart.
  • It has a strong link to the 8th house in D6 (chronic disease, sudden disease, disease hard to diagnose) and is also badly placed in the rāśi chart in connection with the 6th or 8th → he falls sick and spends heavily on it.

"You can connect various divisional charts either through the signs or through the planets. The same planet is having a link with two different houses in two different divisional charts. The planet, when its period comes, will bring some connection between those two parameters."

The Aries of D10 and the Aries of D20 are the same Aries.

Verse 65 — Exalted or Own-Sign Benefic in the 12th: A Good Loka

Condition: a functional benefic in the 12th from Karakamsa, and that planet is in own house (sva-bha) or exaltation (ucca) — very well placed.

Result: sad-gati — after death the soul goes to an auspicious loka.

The lokas:

• Seven worlds above and seven below — fourteen in all.
• They are not places one walks or flies to. They are realms of consciousness. Even while alive on earth, the consciousness can go there.

After death — three courses:

1. The soul stays stuck, in denial, unable to accept that the body is gone. The teacher's analogy: a man evicted from a house he lived in for 70 years, waiting outside for someone to let him back in.
2. It accepts the loss and moves into a new house — rebirth. The merits and demerits of earlier lives form the new horoscope: some things come easily, some with difficulty.
3. It leaves the town altogether — goes to one of the fourteen realms, higher for merit, lower for sin, and stays until that merit or demerit is exhausted. Then it is sent back to earth.

The lesson: the 12th is the house of giving up, acceptance, compromise. In the chart of money it is expense. From the sense of "I" it is letting the body go.

"So 12th house is the house that shows the path you take after you are dead."

Which chart?

• A student asked whether it could be D1, since the body is physical. The teacher: it could, but the verse speaks of an aṁśa, so it is something else.
• D30 — the chart of sins and evils — applies in part.
• D20 — the chart of spiritual progress, the struggle to find God. Moving to a higher world is finding God to a greater extent, so D20 is a candidate.
• He leaves it open. No one can check where a dead person went, so there are no examples to study. "I don't really have a clear guidance that I can give you on this verse, unlike the other more material verses."

Verses 66-68 — Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa: Moksha

Rahu and Ketu

• Rahu, the north node — the pursuit of happiness in the material world. The soul caught in polarities: beautiful and ugly, pleasure and pain.
• Ketu, the south node — the pursuit of the true self, the God within. Ketu is the planet who shows liberation.
• The story of the demon who drank the nectar and was cut in two by Vishnu is a metaphor for this, not a physical event.

Ketu with a benefic → mukti

• Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa, conjoined or aspected by functional benefics → the person gets mukti (moksha, nirvana): the state with no "this is me, this is somebody else".

Ketu in Aries or Sagittarius → sāyujya

• Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa in Aries or Sagittarius, aspected by a functional benefic → sāyujya-padam: he merges in God.
• Why these two signs? They are the 1st and 9th of the natural zodiac — fiery signs, the signs of dharma (see Part 8).
• A person given to dharma tends to have a mission. A mission blocks liberation: until it is done he is not free. A strong fiery sign shows a man on a mission.

"But if Ketu, the planet of dispassion, the planet of detachment, the planet of liberation, is there, even in such a sign, it can be conducive to freedom. The person will still get moksha."

• A student asked why Leo is not named. "You can say Leo also. To fit in the metre, he just took a couple of examples."

Ketu alone, or with a malefic → no mukti

• Ketu alone in the 12th, or conjoined or aspected by a functional malefic (6th lord, 12th lord and the like) → he does not get mukti and does not see an auspicious loka.
• The teacher's caveat: take it with a pinch of salt. A bad influence does not always deny. If Ketu is strong — own house, exalted, a friendly sign — he may resist, and the person may still get moksha.
• Bottom line: bad influences on Ketu are a problem; good influences help.

Deity by the Planet with Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa

The verses now name the deity the person becomes attached to and through whom he reaches moksha. The planet is the one influencing Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa — with Ketu, aspecting Ketu or the sign Ketu occupies.

See it in D20, the chart of worship, religious activity and the pursuit of God.

Notes on the table

• Sun and Jupiter both give Shiva. Sun is fire: Rudra, the destroyer. Jupiter is the teacher of the gods, kind and compassionate: Shiva as the teacher.
• Lakshmi is not just money. She has eight forms — giver of health, food, bravery, vehicles and so on. The eighth, Moksha Lakshmi, gives liberation and dispassion. With Venus and Ketu there may first be the blessing of Dhana Lakshmi; in the end it turns into Moksha Lakshmi.
• Mars is the commander in the planetary cabinet, and Skanda commands the army of the gods. For the gods within to defeat the demons within, boldness and initiative come first.
• Saturn's rider. Mercury and Saturn show Vishnu, but Saturn in a malefic sign shows a tāmasic devatā. Malefic signs are those owned by natural malefics: Aries and Scorpio (Mars), Capricorn and Aquarius (Saturn). Signs of Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and the Sun are benefic; the Moon's sign is on the border, as the Moon is benefic or malefic by phase.
• The next verse names Venus or Saturn in a malefic ṛkṣa. Ṛkṣa can mean sign or house. Since the previous verse already said "sign", the teacher takes it as a malefic house from lagna — 6th, 8th or 12th. The place is the 12th from Karakamsa, but from lagna it can be any house.

Why a tāmasic devatā for Rahu

• Sattva — purity and clarity, a stable and clear equilibrium. Not outward niceness over inner anger; that is denial.
• Rajas — animation, effort to move from tamas to sattva.
• Tamas — darkness, a stable but impure equilibrium.
• Vishnu is shown as sāttvic; Durga and Kali as tāmasic. That does not mean the goddess is filled with darkness.

"No goddess is filled with darkness. The thing is, she is capable of taking even somebody in darkness into light. Whereas a God like Vishnu, he will work on somebody who is already in sattva."

• The teacher's analogy: a bright child learns from a gentle teacher; a stubborn child needs a stern one. The fierce deities may give some hardship at first, but they force discipline and make one deal with the negative qualities fast, without compromise.
• Rahu is the planet of materialism and delusion, so under his influence a tāmasic devatā is needed.

Rahu and Ketu are always together in D20 (a student's objection)

• Yes. But by sign, company and aspects one of them dominates. Ketu dominating — an inborn interest in moksha. Rahu dominating — it takes strong effort.
• Rahu can be a benefic or a malefic: 9th lord in one chart, 6th lord in another. The functional nature is seen from lagna, not from Karakamsa.

Examples the teacher cites

• He wrote an article on these verses with 15 to 20 examples — Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Ramana Maharshi, Sivananda, Vivekananda, Sarada Devi — people known to have progressed through one deity (Skanda, Ganesha, Kali, Vishnu). It is in the Jyotish Writings Yahoo group.
• Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and Sarada Devi — all three Kali worshippers — have the Rahu–Ketu influence. Another disciple of Ramakrishna worshipped a form of Vishnu (Narasimha, he thinks); in his chart Mercury or Saturn comes out instead.

The 6th from Amatyakaraka

The last line of the passage: the same results can be read from the 6th house from Amatyakaraka instead of the 12th from Atmakaraka.

The two karakas:

• Atmakaraka — the king of the nativity ("not even the ascendant"). The inner awareness of "this is me", the soul's notion of who it is and what it must pursue.
• Amatyakaraka — the minister who advises the king. The sense of purpose, the mission for which one came to earth. Vivekananda: taking Advaita to the West. Yogananda: teaching Kriya Yoga in the West. For another it is building a temple, or getting children into school.

Why 12th from one and 6th from the other:

• The sense of "this is me" has to be let go to reach God → the 12th, the house of letting go, from the Atmakaraka.
• The mission is not let go. It is fulfilled, fought for → the 6th, the house of obstacles and overcoming them, from the Amatyakaraka.

Which matters more:

• Until the mission is done there is no moksha. So the 6th from Amatyakaraka is, in the teacher's opinion, the more important of the two.

"If it is strong, don't even look at 12th from Atmakaraka. Look at 6th from Amatyakaraka and say, worship this planet."

• Worshipping that planet creates the conditions for working on the mission. When the mission succeeds, the 12th from Atmakaraka — the ego merging in God — can be thought of.
• "A king cannot just retire. The minister will come and say, no, we have to get this done."

Which chart (a student's question): the sense of purpose is seen in D9 and D10. All accomplishments in the world, not only the profession, are D10. So this is read mainly in D10, and to some extent in D9.
