Ayurvedic Constitution from Chart: Kapha=Jupiter/Venus/Full Moon; Pitta=Sun/Mars/Ketu; Vata=Saturn/Rahu/Waning Moon/Mercury-Variable; Body=Lagna; Mind=Moon; Persona=AL; Quantitative Aspects ≥75% Dominate; Prakriti (Birth Chart) vs Vikruti (Current Dasha); 6L/8L Pumping Dosha = Actual Disease
How to read a person’s Ayurvedic constitution from the chart. Kapha is shown by Jupiter, Venus and the full Moon; Pitta by Sun, Mars and Ketu; Vata by Saturn, Rahu and the dark Moon; Mercury takes the dosha of his company. The body is read from Lagna — its sign, planets in the 1st house, the Lagna lord, and above all the computed percentage aspects on the Lagna degree, where the top one or two planets above 75% decide. The mind is read the same way from Moon and the Moon-sign lord, and can differ from the body. The persona the world sees is read the same way from Arudha Lagna. The page also covers prakṛti against vikṛti, how a daśā raises its planet’s dosha, why a 6th or 8th lord pumping a dosha turns it into disease, and how to eat when two doshas are present.
Key principle
See which planet is there in the lagna, and more importantly, see the aspects on the lagna. Aspects are very important in determining constitution. Whoever has the highest aspect, the top one or two planets who have more than 75% aspect, they will have a strong say in the constitution of the person.
Ayurvedic Constitution from the Chart
Why from the chart:
- Seeing a person, one can guess — "a strong Pitta person, maybe some Vata". The guess is not always right.
- Sometimes there is only the chart of someone far away.
- The mind can have a different constitution from the body. The teacher knows a strong Pitta man whose mind is full of Vata — always anxious, nervous.
- One who knows his constitution can eat and care for his health accordingly.
The Three Doshas
| Dosha | Elements | The type | Planets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kapha | Earth + water (solid and liquid states) | Tends to be fat, low metabolism, absorbs whatever is eaten. Stable, creative, resists change. Negative: sluggish, lazy, dull | Jupiter, Venus, the full Moon |
| Pitta | Fire + water (liquid) | Stout, well-built, good muscles. Doers, with initiative and energy. Negative: irritable, frustrated, angry, short-tempered | Sun, Mars, Ketu |
| Vata | Air + ether | Thin, weak, emaciated. Unstable, hyper, flexible. Negative: confusion, anxiety, nervousness | Saturn, Rahu, the dark Moon |
- Fire is transformation: it turns uncooked rice into cooked rice. Turning a plan into an actual company or an actual pūjā is the same fire. With too little water, things burn to ash — that is the irritable Pitta.
- Sadness shows the type too. A depressed Vata person: "Why does everything happen to me? I am a loser." A depressed Pitta person: "Why should it happen to me? This is so stupid." He finds fault with the people around him. He is fiery even when sad.
- Types by body: Vata the yogi, Pitta the sportsman, Kapha the couch potato. Kapha people have a lot of hair. Pitta people do not.
- There are exceptions in all of this.
Moon: on Amāvasyā he is full Vata, on Pūrṇimā full Kapha. In between he moves step by step — 90% Vata and 10% Kapha, then 80/20, and so on.
Mercury: he takes the qualities of the company he is in. He can show any of the three. In the charts below: with Ketu he is Pitta; alone with Sun in a sign of Mars he is Pitta; with Venus and a dark Moon he is Kapha with some Vata.
Dosha and constitution (a student asks if they differ): the doshas give the constitution. With no dosha at all one would be in samādhi. Every dosha stands between a person and that.
Body: Lagna
- The sign of Lagna. Aries is a fiery sign, so some Pitta.
- Planets in the 1st house, and how close they are to the Lagna degree.
- The Lagna lord: his own dosha, and the planets close to him or aspecting him.
- More important than all of these: the aspects on Lagna.
"See which planet is there in the lagna, and more importantly, see the aspects on the lagna. Aspects are very important in determining constitution."
Use the computed aspect, not the rough one: not "Lagna is in Aries, Jupiter is in Sagittarius, so there is an aspect". In Jagannatha Hora, in the window showing longitudes, open Planetary Aspect Evaluation and read the percentage.
"Whoever has the highest aspect, the top one or two planets who have more than 75% aspect, they will have a strong say in the constitution of the person."
- Above 80% he calls very strong. A 69% aspect he calls "not even three-fourths" and sets aside.
The 1st house in these readings starts at the Lagna degree. A planet behind the Lagna degree, even in the same sign, he places in the 12th house. A planet in the next sign within 30° of the Lagna degree he places in the 1st. The same holds from Moon and from Arudha Lagna.
Mind: Moon
- Moon's own phase — Kapha or Vata.
- The lord of the Moon sign, and who influences that lord. This counts for more than Moon himself, "because Moon is always going to be Kapha or Vata".
- Aspects on Moon, read the same way.
- Planets close to Moon in his sign.
Persona: Arudha Lagna
- Lagna is the body as it is. Moon is the mind as it is. How the person comes across to the world is a third thing, read from Arudha Lagna.
- Same method: the lord of the Arudha Lagna and his company, planets close to the Arudha Lagna, and the computed aspects on it.
- The teacher shows it on Indira Gandhi's chart at the end of the class.
Prakṛti and Vikṛti
- Prakṛti is the natural constitution — what Lagna and Moon show in the birth chart.
- Vikṛti is what has been altered: the present state. Through life the constitution shifts with the daśā, the transits and the lifestyle. A Kapha-Pitta person can have a Vata problem for a time.
- A planet's daśā or antardaśā raises that planet's dosha — in the body or in the mind, depending on what the planet touches. Vimshottari is enough, or any nakshatra daśā.
When a Dosha Becomes Disease
"If the planet who is influencing happens to be 6th lord or 8th lord — 6th and 8th are houses of disease — the extra dosha being pumped into the system, whether it is Pitta or Vata, can even cause disease."
Eating with Two Doshas
- Do not lower one dosha at the cost of raising the other.
- Food that provokes the third dosha, the one the body does not hold, is affordable. It will be thrown out.
- Some foods lower a dosha without raising any other, but they work slowly. A plain kichadi of moong dal and rice with cilantro and coriander seed raises none of the three.
- The final aim is to have no dosha at all. Any dosha stops samādhi.
