BPHS Ch.33 v23-31: Gulika in Karkamsa+Moon=Thief; Gulika+No Aspect=Death by Poison; Ketu+Malefic=Ear Disease; Ketu+Venus=Dikshita; Ketu+Mercury+Saturn=Impotent; Ketu+Saturn Only=External Sannyasi; Ketu+Sun+Venus=Royal Servant; 2nd from Karkamsa Rahu=Money Loss; Mandi=Gulika (NOT Two Separate Entities)

Gulika in Karkamsa + full Moon aspecting = thief or money stolen ("he is one among thieves; full Moon = pursuit of fullness at any cost; D30"). Gulika + no aspect = death/suffering by poison ("even cancer from plastics/chemicals = poison entering body; D30"). Mercury aspecting Gulika in Karkamsa = many children ("Mercury = multitude; in D7 = many offspring"). Ketu in Karkamsa + functional malefic aspect = ear disease ("Ketu = 12th from Sagittarius = loss from Jupiter's MT = enemy of hearing; from Gemini = 6th lord = disease of ears; D30"). Ketu + Venus aspect = Dikshita ("initiated into religious tradition, genuine sadhaka; Ketu = dispassion; Venus = wisdom; D20"). Ketu + Mercury and Saturn = impotent/infertile ("both neutral/neuter planets + Ketu = absence of generative power; D7"). Ketu + Mercury and Venus = lowly/illegitimate birth ("Mercury born from Moon+Tara illicit union; Venus = licentiousness; D12"). Ketu + Saturn = Tapasvi — real or show of penance ("Saturn = austerity + Ketu = detachment"). Ketu + ONLY Saturn = external sannyasi (wears robes without inner wisdom): "Saturn gives deprivation not wisdom; only Jupiter or Venus give wisdom for genuine renunciation. Real detachment is in the mind — Lahiri Mahasaya had wife, children, job, yet was highly detached." Ketu + Sun + Venus = royal servant ("Sun = royalty; Venus = luxury; Ketu = not the king but respectable position near royalty; D10"). 2nd from Karkamsa: Venus/Mars sign or aspect = Paradarika (interested in others' spouses); Ketu breaks this licentiousness even when Jupiter cannot; Rahu = loss of money. Mandi = Gulika resolution: "Same Upagraha — Parashara uses both terms; this very verse shows Gulika as both thief and victim = one entity not two."

"Ketu in Karkamsa with only Saturn aspecting — without Jupiter or Venus — gives an external sannyasi. He wears the robes. He goes to the forest. But the inner detachment is not there. Saturn gives renunciation through deprivation, not through wisdom. When he meets temptation — beauty, praise, wealth — will he remain detached? Whereas Lahiri Mahasaya had a wife, children, a job, followers — and was fully detached. That is real. Real detachment is in the mind."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS Ch.33 — Verse 23: Gulika in Karkamsa + Full Moon Aspecting

Sanskrit gist: "Saurair hotadhanao jata hai" — "One whose money has been stolen by thieves" OR "Yadah svayam saurodhvavet" — "Or he himself is a thief."

Condition: Gulika is in Karkamsa of a divisional chart, AND a full Moon (or near-full Moon) is aspecting him.

Result: Either the person's money is stolen by thieves, or the person himself is a thief.

PVNR note: "When he says someone's money is taken by thieves, don't think he is talking about a noble person whose money was unfortunately stolen. He is literally talking about somebody who is among thieves — his money may be taken by other thieves. He is one of the thieves."

Why full Moon?: Moon = mind; full Moon = pursuit of fullness, abundance, desire. Full Moon aspecting Gulika (who shows evil/immoral deeds) = "being interested in making yourself happy and going to any extent for it, including stealing."

Why this dosha (D30 probably): Gulika shows Atmakaraka being afflicted by evil deeds/bad morals. D30 is the chart of evil acts (papa purushas). "In D30, this combination clearly applies."

Verse: Gulika in Karkamsa with No Aspect → Death by Poison

Condition: Gulika is in Karkamsa, but NO planet is aspecting him.

Result: "Vipadaha" = somebody who suffers greatly, many hardships. "Vishayid habaha" = killed by poison.

PVNR: "It doesn't necessarily mean a snake or scorpion bites him. Even different kinds of cancer — perhaps some people take a lot of thermocol and plastic into their system and suddenly get cancer. That is also poison. Body is getting something it should not naturally be getting."

Divisional chart: D30 (Trimshamsa) — this is the chart of evil events, punishments, and serious misfortunes.

Verse: Mercury Aspecting Gulika in Karkamsa → Many Children

Condition: Gulika is in Karkamsa AND Mercury is aspecting.

Sanskrit: "Brahadvijah" = one who has big seed/fertility; many offspring.

Apparent paradox: Mercury is generally not good for fertility (Mercury+Saturn aspect can reduce children). So how does Mercury give many children here?

PVNR resolution: "When Mercury aspects the Karkamsa, we are not talking about fertility per se. Mercury is the planet of multitude, of variety. When Karkamsa is aspected by Mercury, that area of life shows 'many.' If this combination is in Saptamsha (D7), then Atmakaraka's karkamsa aspected by Mercury = many children. Gulika adds some shady element — perhaps children from multiple partners."

Divisional chart: D7 (Saptamsha) — chart of children.

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Malefic Aspecting → Ear Disease

Condition: Ketu is in Karkamsa AND a functional malefic is aspecting him.

Result: Ear disease (Kanna Roga) or ear severed/non-functional.

Why Ketu → ears?

The logic chain (PVNR's explanation):

  1. Hearing is associated with Akasha Tattva (space/ether)
  2. Jupiter = karaka for hearing; Jupiter's Moolatrikona = Sagittarius
  3. Ketu = 12th lord from Sagittarius (loss from the place of Jupiter's strength) = enemy of hearing ability
  4. From Gemini (natural 3rd sign of zodiac = ears/communication): Ketu = 6th lord (impediment/disease)
  5. Therefore Ketu naturally afflicts the Akasha Tattva and Jupiter's domain = ears

Nuance: "Ketu doesn't have to give ear problems just because he is in Karkamsa. One needs the malefic aspect. And you should also check if Ketu is the 6th lord or has any connection to the 3rd house in the Rasi chart — if not, this result may be mitigated."

Divisional chart: D30 — chart of serious problems and physical evils.

Note on Trimshamsa tattvas: Each Trimshamsa portion maps to a particular tattva — e.g., Virgo/Gemini portions → Prithvi, Aries/Libra → Jala, Scorpio/Aries → Agni, Sagittarius/Pisces → Akasha/Vayu. The tattva can be read from the sign the afflicted combination occupies in D30.

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Venus Aspecting → Initiated into Tradition (Dikshita)

Condition: Ketu is in Karkamsa AND Venus is aspecting.

Result: "Dikshita" — one who has taken a diksha (initiation), a religious/spiritual person initiated into some parampara, mantra, or tradition. An actual sadhaka.

Why?: Ketu = planet of spirituality and dispassion. Venus = giver of wisdom and bhakti. Venus aspecting Ketu in Karkamsa = wisdom + dispassion applied to the soul's nature = genuine spiritual initiation.

Divisional chart: Probably D20 (Vimsamsa) — chart of spiritual practices.

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Mercury and Saturn Aspecting → Impotent/Infertile

Condition: Ketu in Karkamsa + Mercury AND/OR Saturn aspecting.

Result: "Nirvija" = impotent OR infertile (unable to beget children). If both Mercury AND Saturn aspect, the combination is more certain; if only one aspects, less certain.

Why?:

  • Mercury = neutral planet (neither male nor female)
  • Saturn = neutral planet (same)
  • Ketu = planet of deprivation, taking away
  • All three together = absence of the power of generation

PVNR note: "If Ketu is in Karkamsa aspected by Mercury and Saturn in Saptamsha, it can make it difficult to get a child. The person may adopt a child."

Divisional chart: D7 (Saptamsha) — chart of children.

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Mercury and Venus Aspecting → Lowly Birth (D12)

Condition: Ketu in Karkamsa + Mercury AND Venus both aspecting.

Result: "Dasi putra" — born to a servant maid; lowly birth; illegitimate or socially inappropriate birth.

Why Mercury + Venus show this:

  • Mercury = planet of Mercury (son of Moon+Tara, illicit union — this is Mercury's origin in mythology)
  • Venus = karka for licentiousness, desires
  • Together aspecting an evil planet (Ketu) in Karkamsa = "birth resulting from the licentiousness of some people"

PVNR nuance: "He is not saying the mother and father are both servants and he is born to them. What he is saying is the mother may be working in a house as a servant and may have compromised with the master. The birth is the result of licentiousness. Or the person's mother was a widow and the father was not present."

Divisional chart: D12 (Dvadasamsha) — chart of parents and circumstances of birth.

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Saturn Aspecting → Tapasvi or Show of Penance

Condition: Ketu in Karkamsa + Saturn aspecting.

Result: "Tapasvi" — person of penance; either a genuine ascetic or someone who puts up a show of penance.

Why:

  • Ketu = dispassion, detachment
  • Saturn = austerity, deprivation, renunciation
  • Ketu in Karkamsa = soul's sense of "I" has high detachment
  • Saturn aspecting = adds austerity to that detachment = tapasya (penance)

Discernment: "It is tough to judge whether it is real or show. Both are given by this combination."

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Only Saturn Aspecting → External Sannyasi

Condition: Ketu in Karkamsa + ONLY Saturn aspecting (no other planet, especially no Jupiter or Venus).

Result: "Sannyasi vekhavan" — one who wears the robes of a sannyasi; outwardly renounced.

Key teaching from PVNR:

"Even though Saturn is the karaka for renunciation, he can't give perfect renunciation internally unless real wisdom is there — Jupiter or Venus give wisdom. Unless they are associated, just Saturn by himself can only give external renunciation. He gives renunciation by way of deprivation."

— PVNR

Contrast with Jupiter/Venus aspects:

  • Saturn alone = external show; may fall when exposed to temptations
  • Saturn + Jupiter or Venus = inner wisdom + outer renunciation = genuine

PVNR on real detachment:

"Real detachment is in the mind, not in what you do externally. Somebody may live in a forest for 20 years. But if they meet a beautiful person or people praising them, will they remain detached? Whereas Lahiri Mahasaya had a wife, children, a job, followers — yet was highly detached."

— PVNR

Verse: Ketu in Karkamsa + Sun and Venus Aspecting → Royal Servant

Condition: Ketu in Karkamsa + Sun AND Venus aspecting.

Result: "Raja prasho" — serving the king in a respectable position; in the king's court or close to royalty/power.

Why Sun + Venus:

  • Sun = royalty, power
  • Venus = luxury, royal insignia
  • Together = marks of royal power and luxury

PVNR nuance: "Because Ketu is there, the person is not at the top himself. He is not the king or minister directly. But he has a respectable position — an advisor to the king, a spiritual advisor, a court official. Ketu doesn't make someone the most powerful person."

Divisional chart: D10 (Dasamsa) — chart of career/profession.

Verse 31: 2nd House from Karkamsa — Key Combinations

Why 2nd from Karkamsa matters:

  • 12th house = pleasures, bed pleasures
  • 2nd house = 3rd from 12th = the initiative, interest, and drive toward 12th house matters
  • "2nd from Karkamsa shows the instinctual drive and initiative the person has for pleasures/desires"

Condition A: 2nd house from Karkamsa is in a Venusian or Martian sign (Pisces, Aries, Virgo, Libra), OR Venus and Mars are there, OR they are conjoining/aspecting the 2nd from Karkamsa.

Result A: "Paradarika" — one who is interested in others' spouses; licentious; gynecologist (professional interpretation).

If Venus and Mars BOTH conjoin/aspect: "Permanent result" (stronger than just owning the sign).

Condition B: Ketu's influence on the 2nd from Karkamsa.

Result B: Ketu breaks the licentiousness; even Jupiter cannot restrain this tendency but Ketu (planet of deprivation) can.

Condition C: Rahu in the 2nd house from Karkamsa.

Result C: "Arthani vritti" — loss of money; money goes away from the person.

Verse 31 completed this class: "We are on verse 31. We will start from 32 in the next class."

Mandi vs. Gulika — Resolution

The debate: Some astrologers (Pandit Sanyalad's theory) say Mandi and Gulika are two different Upagrahas:

  • Mandi = shows evils done TO you
  • Gulika = shows evils you do TO others

PVNR's resolution: They are the SAME Upagraha.

Evidence:

  1. Parashara defines only Gulika's calculation (in Saturn's portion) but then uses "Mandi" later as though already defined = same entity
  2. "Mandi" = from Manda (relating to Saturn); Gulika is also defined based on Saturn's portion → both connected to Saturn
  3. This very verse (Gulika in Karkamsa) shows BOTH "his money is stolen" AND "he himself is a thief" — if they were two separate beings, you would need both of them to show both effects; but Parashara uses only Gulika to show both → confirms one entity

"Parashara used both terms in his book for the same Upagraha. He is also known as Mandi. They are not two different beings."
