BPHS Ch.12 — 1st House (Tanubhava) Rules: Lagna Lord Conditions, Natural Benefic/Malefic & Special Combinations
BPHS Ch.12 (Tanubhava Phaladhyayam — 1st house effects). Rule 1: lagna lord in 6th/8th/12th house PLUS malefic conjunction = destroys bodily comfort. Both conditions required — dusthana placement alone insufficient. Rule 2: lagna lord in kendra (1/4/7/10) or kona (1/5/9) = good bodily comfort — placement alone sufficient; no conjunction condition needed. Rule 3: lagna lord combust, debilitated, OR in inimical sign = gives diseases. Rule 4: Natural benefics in kendra/kona = removes ALL diseases (strongest antidote). Rule 5: Natural malefic (krura) occupying or aspecting lagna OR Moon + no benefic relief = no bodily happiness. Rule 6: Natural benefic (saumya) in lagna = good looks + royal characteristics/charm; natural malefic in lagna = not good-looking. Rule 8: Sun in quadruped sign + all other planets in dual signs (Gemini/Virgo/Sagittarius/Pisces) = twins or multiples. Rule 9: Sun+Moon in same RASHI AND same NAVAMSHA (Amavasya born, very close) = instability with mother from birth — child may have multiple caregivers, loss of mother, or mother unable to provide care; "you can't take '3 mothers' literally but there is something undesirable with mother." All 1st house rules apply equally from CHANDRA LAGNA. Key interpretive rule for BPHS: Shubha/Papa = FUNCTIONAL benefic/malefic (based on lagna); Saumya/Krura = NATURAL benefic/malefic (inherent planetary nature). "85% of the time Parashara uses these words with this distinction — it changes interpretation significantly."
"Parashara uses two distinct sets of words. Shubha and Papa are functional benefic and malefic. Saumya and Krura are natural benefic and malefic. Same rule stated with "Krura" may give very different results than the same rule stated with "Papa." Always check which word he uses."

BPHS — Tanubhava Phaladhyayam (1st House: Effects)
This is Chapter 12 in Santhanam's edition of BPHS. Parashara systematically gives rules for the first house, covering bodily comfort, diseases, appearance, and specific special combinations.
Rule 1: Lagna Lord with Malefics in Dusthana → No Physical Comfort
— PVNR"Sapāpo dehapo ashtāri vyayagaha... dehasaukhyahrut"
Sanskrit terms:
- Sapāpa = along with malefics (Sa = with, Papa = malefic)
- Dehapah = lagna lord (the one who rules deha/body)
- Ashtāri vyayagaha = one who has gone into 8th (Ashta), 6th (Ari=enemy), or 12th (Vyaya=last)
- Dehasaukhyahrut = one who destroys bodily comfort
Rule: If the lagna lord is in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house AND with malefic planets → destroys physical comfort.
Critical distinction: Both conditions must be present — dusthana placement PLUS malefic conjunction. If the lagna lord is in a dusthana without malefic influence, it alone is insufficient to destroy bodily comfort.
— PVNR"If he is in 6th, 8th, or 12th, that is not enough. He has to be in 6th, 8th, or 12th along with malefics."
PVNR note on "malefics" here: The word used is Sapāpa — Papa typically refers to functional malefics in Parashara's usage. So this rule applies when the lagna lord is with functional malefics in those dusthanas.
Rule 2: Lagna Lord in Kendra/Kona → Physical Comfort
— PVNR"Kendra, kone, angesha sadad ahasukham dhishe"
If the lagna lord is in a quadrant (kendra) or trine (kona) → gives good comfort of the body.
No condition stated about malefics here — being in kendra/kona alone is sufficient. Even without benefic association, the lagna lord in quadrant/trine can give bodily comfort because it is his inherent agenda.
— PVNR"Merely being placed in quadrant or trine gives him enough strength to push his agenda."
Contrast with Rule 1: For bad results (dusthana), he needs both bad placement AND malefic affliction. For good results (kendra/kona), placement alone suffices.
Rule 3: Lagna Lord Combust, Debilitated, or in Inimical Sign → Diseases
— PVNR"Lagna posha astangatah niye satru bhe roga krodh bhavet"
- Astangatah = combust (literally "set," i.e., too close to the Sun)
- Niye = in debilitation sign (nīca)
- Satru bhe = in an inimical sign
If the lagna lord is combust OR debilitated OR in inimical sign → gives diseases.
This is a separate rule from Rule 1 — it is about the inherent weakness of the lagna lord, not its house placement.
Rule 4: Benefics in Kendra/Kona → Removes All Diseases
— PVNR"Shubha kendra trikona stha sarva roga hara aspratah"
Natural benefics (not the lagna lord specifically) placed in quadrants or trines → destroys all diseases.
This is the antidote rule:
- The diseases indicated by Rules 1–3 can be offset when there are benefics in good positions
- Timing matters: during the dasha of a benefic in kendra/kona, the person may recover even if they had disease during the dasha of an afflicted lagna lord
— PVNR"If you see benefics in quadrants and trines, that is enough to offset all other weaknesses."
Rule 5: Natural Malefics Occupying/Aspecting Lagna or Moon → No Bodily Happiness
— PVNR"Lagnay chandrayatha vā krura graha drushtaye thave yute shubhadrishti vijine cha jantur dehasukham nahi"
Conditions (all must be met):
- Natural malefic (kuragraha) either occupying or aspecting the 1st house OR Moon
- No benefic aspect or occupation present
→ Jantur dehasukham nahi = for that person, there is no happiness from the body (poor health)
Key terminology distinction:
- Krūragraha = natural malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, Sun in some contexts)
- Shubha/Papa = functional benefics/malefics
— PVNR"Parashara typically uses krura and saumya to indicate natural malefics and natural benefics. And he uses the word subha and papa to indicate functional benefics and functional malefics."
Rule 6: Natural Benefic in Lagna → Good Looks + Royal Charm
— PVNR"Saumya kehata hai yudhe drushte lagne deh asukan vidha. Lagna saumya surupa syad. Rajalakshana samyutha."
Natural benefic (saumya) in lagna:
- Surupa = beautiful/handsome, good looks
- Rajalakshana samyutha = possessing royal characteristics/charm
Conversely, natural malefic in lagna → person is not good-looking.
Rule 7: Mars or Saturn in Lagna in Aries/Taurus/Leo (Verse Deferred)
A verse specifically about Mars or Saturn in lagna when the lagna sign is Aries, Taurus, or Leo (Mesha, Vrishabha, Simha/Hari). PVNR was unsatisfied with Santhanam's translation and deferred detailed interpretation to a later class.
— PVNR"Hari literally means Vishnu, monkey, horse, lion. Since there is a sign called lion — Simha — Hari means Simha."
Rule 8: Sun in Quadruped Sign + All Planets in Dual Signs → Twins/Multiples
— PVNR"Chatuspata gato bhānu pare vidya samanvitaha — jātāu yamalāvijni"
Conditions:
- Sun is in a quadruped sign: Aries, Taurus, Leo, first half of Capricorn, second half of Sagittarius
- All other planets are in dual signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces (Mercury and Jupiter's signs, which are essentially dual-natured)
- Other planets are also strong
→ Birth of twins or multiples (yamalāu)
This is an extremely rare combination (all planets simultaneously in dual signs). PVNR notes: "You may see a lot of twins but it is unlikely that you will see a twin with this combination."
Quadruped signs (Chatushpada = four-legged creatures): Aries (ram), Taurus (bull), Leo (lion), first half of Capricorn (goat part), second half of Sagittarius (horse part).
Rule 9: Sun and Moon in Same Rasi AND Same Navamsha → 3 Mothers
— PVNR"Ravi-indu yekabhavasthau ekam chakasamanvitau — trimatrajatribirmaasayi pitravratrajaposhita"
- Sun and Moon in the same sign (rasi) AND the same navamsha → they are very close together (Amavasya birth)
- Trimatraj = by three mothers; Tibhirmasa = for three months
- Pitra bhratra poshita = brought up by father and brother
Interpretation: The child will change mothers/caregivers — instability around the mother from birth. Could mean actual change of mothers or that multiple people nurture the child at a very young age.
— PVNR"Literally you can't take it as 3 mothers, but what you can understand is there is something undesirable with respect to mother. There is some instability with respect to mother."
Practical meaning: Loss of mother, or mother unable to care for child → others step in (3 babysitters, father, brother, relatives). The key point is instability in motherly care from infancy.
Rule 10: All Rules Apply from Chandra Lagna Too
— PVNR"Eva mayava phalam vacham chandra adap sadha budhai"
Parashara explicitly states: all the rules given for lagna regarding body, diseases, wounds, moles, etc., apply equally from Chandra Lagna (Moon's position as lagna).
PVNR extends this:
- Wherever lagna is specified, Chandra Lagna is also implied
- Arudha Lagna is naturally included even though Parashara hasn't formally defined it yet
- "The fact that he said lagna and chandra lagna, obviously arudha lagna is included."
Key Teaching: Functional vs Natural Malefics in BPHS Language
Parashara uses two distinct sets of words:
| Word | Meaning | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Shubha | Benefic | Functional benefic (based on lagna) |
| Papa | Malefic | Functional malefic (based on lagna) |
| Saumya | Gentle/benefic | Natural benefic (Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, Mercury alone) |
| Krūra | Harsh/malefic | Natural malefic (Sun, Mars, Saturn, waning Moon, Rahu, Ketu) |
— PVNR"85% of the places he uses the word shubha, papa for functional nature and the word saumya and krura for inherent nature."
Application: When studying BPHS rules, always check which word Parashara uses to determine if he means functional or natural nature. Same rule stated with "krura" may give different results than the same rule with "papa."
