Which House Shows Which Stage

Why the 6th, when marriage uses the 8th:

• The 8th destroys one thing and starts another. A new marriage ends the old one, so each further marriage is the 8th from the last (7th → 2nd → 9th …).
• A degree does not destroy the earlier study. It builds on it. For changes that build on what exists, use the 6th-house progression.
• The 6th is an upachaya. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are the upachayas, the houses of accumulation; the 6th is the house of growth.

How to Judge the Subject

• See who owns the house, who occupies it, who aspects it.
• Graha drishti is a desire to learn something. Rashi drishti matters more: it is the permanent influence, what you actually studied through those years.
• For each planet there are many subjects; the chart only narrows them down.

Kerry's 4th House — Basic Education

D-24 lagna is Aquarius. Mercury is in the 4th (Taurus).

• Mercury in the 4th → he does well.
• Mercury is the 8th lord → changes and instability in basic education. It can also show breaks (stopping school, working, returning years later). Kerry had no breaks that PVNR knew of; the instability was moving from country to country, with new languages and cultures each time.
• Mercury is also the 5th lord, and the planet of flexibility → intelligent; he adapts well.

Kerry's 9th House — B.A. in Political Science

The 9th is Libra.

• Rashi drishti on Libra: Saturn (Leo), Moon (Aquarius), Mercury (Taurus).
• Of these, Saturn also has graha drishti on Libra (his 3rd aspect) → desire and permanent influence both. Saturn's influence is the strongest.
• The stronger reason: from Libra Saturn is the yogakaraka (4th and 5th lord), and he sits in the 11th from Libra.
• Among the subjects of Saturn are sociology and political science. The Sun is the planet of kings, Saturn the planet of the masses.
• Saturn is in Leo, the 5th sign of the natural zodiac, the house of power. A student suggested checking the amsha ruler: Saturn is in Skandamsha. Skanda is the chief of the army of the gods — energy and power.
• So: political science with a focus on empowering ordinary people. He took a B.A. in Political Science from Yale.

When it ended: the 8th from the house of that study ends it. 8th from Libra = Taurus, with Mercury. He graduated in 1965, in Rahu dasha, Mercury antardasha.

Kerry's 2nd House — Law

The 2nd is Pisces.

• The Sun is in it. Jupiter owns it and has graha drishti on it from Scorpio. Mars aspects it from Virgo.
• Sun could give politics, Mars engineering, Jupiter teaching, religious studies or law.
• Jupiter wins. Take Pisces as the reference lagna for this study: its lord Jupiter is in the 9th from it (Scorpio). The 9th is dharma and protection; a lord in the 9th from his sign protects it, and the 9th is a house where Jupiter takes control.
• He studied law after coming back from Vietnam. PVNR notes it was not strictly a master's — more a second first degree, a law degree.

The Principle

When several planets influence the house of a study, the planet strongest from that sign decides:

• from Libra, Saturn the yogakaraka;
• from Pisces, its own lord Jupiter in the 9th.
