Key Principles from This Lesson

Rasi Sandhi / Balavastha

• A planet in the first degree of a sign is in Rasi Sandhi. It is in Balavastha, deep infancy, and weak.
• This is not Gandanta. Gandanta is a separate thing; the teacher names the first three degrees of Leo as Gandanta in the lady's annual chart.

Badhakasthana by Lagna Type

• Badhaka means troublesome, troublemaker. Badhakesha is the lord of that house.
• "Any evil combinations in the Badhakasthana are even more evil."
• In D6 the 6th, the 8th and the Badhaka show big ill health.
• A natural malefic in the 6th is normally good. As Badhakesha in the 6th he is bad.

Mandi and Gulika

• Upagrahas, the two sons of Saturn, "more evil than Saturn."
• In the 5th of D24 they afflict intelligence and the ability to learn, even with no planet in the house.

Strong Is Not Good

• Vaiseshikamsa and similar counts measure strength only.
• A strong planet that is your enemy by lordship is a strong enemy.

Affliction in D30 — Sign Quality

• For mental problems look at Moon and Mercury in D30.
• The same holds in D6: planets in Cancer give good results easily and bad ones with difficulty; planets in signs of Saturn and Mars the reverse.

Reading Sub-Periods

• The antardasha lord is a subordinate; the dasha lord is the boss and has the final say.
• Read a pratyantardasha in the context of the antardasha, and the antardasha in the context of the dasha.
• A problem in the rasi chart can be many things. The divisional chart of the matter (D6 for disease, D24 for learning) must confirm it.

Prasna Rules

1. Jupiter in lagna, aspecting lagna, or with or aspecting the lagna lord: the question is genuine.
2. Navamsa lagna tied to the person's natal chart (his lagna, the sign of his lagna lord): the stars are answering.
3. Otherwise skip the prasna.
4. Navamsa = past. Rasi = present. Parashara Drekkana = future.

Gemstone and Prayer

• Prayer: going to the planet's house. A malefic relents; a weak benefic is motivated. Even the worst malefic can be prayed to.
• Gemstone: bringing the planet into your house. It strengthens his influence on your life, not the planet. Never a malefic. A very weak well-wisher gains nothing from it — pray to him instead.
• Wear the stone of a planet that is good for you across the relevant vargas and able to act.

Vastu — Questions at the End

A student asked which direction a house should face for a couple, going by their names or nakshatras; the house they were considering faces southwest. The teacher: "Unfortunately, I have no clue... I am not a Vastu expert." What he does say:

Facing and the Main Door

• "East is good, west is bad, north is good, south is bad" are thumb rules. The shastras say the main door can be in any direction; in each direction a particular portion is good.
• Divide the plot into 9 × 9 = 81 equal squares — the Vastu mandala. Each square has a deity, some auspicious, some evil. A door in an auspicious deity's portion is auspicious.
• Reference: the books of Dr. Niranjan Babu, son of Dr. B.V. Raman, which collect the door positions from the Vastu classics.
• In both astrology and Vastu there is a recent wave of faith in India, mostly superstition. Most practitioners know a handful of thumb rules.

Rooms

• Kitchen: Agneya, the southeast, is good for cooking.
• A kitchen in the southwest, the direction of negativity and of a demoness: negative energy enters the food daily. He knew a man who, misremembering a book, had a good plan mirrored to put the kitchen there, and suffered in that house. His dasha was bad enough to corrupt his own judgment.
• Master bedroom in the southeast, the direction of fire: quarrels. He knew six or seven couples who fought after moving into such a house and patched up after moving out.
• Some astrology classics fix each room from the horoscope and Ashtakavarga. He does not know whether that is the teaching of rishis or a later invention.

Every Direction Has Two Sides

• South is Mars: fighting. West is Saturn: suffering and hard work — but also discipline, austerity, perseverance.
• Southwest is Nirriti, a demoness, and Rahu's direction: crookedness, cheating, underground activity — but also cutting-edge work and thinking beyond the box. In Dasamsa, planets in Nirriti amsa show either underground work or breakthrough research.
• "Every planet, every god, every demon has a good and bad side."
• Learn the thumb rules from the shastras, but modify them judiciously by the nature of the person. A fighter by his chart may do well with what others avoid.

On Giving Advice

Give the best advice that comes to mind. Whether the person listens is his destiny. If he is destined to suffer by bad advice, the adviser's intellect will be clouded for a while. That is not in our control.
