D12 Parents Analysis — Mother from the 4th Lord, Father from the 9th Lord

The Lord Shows the Person, the Ārūḍha Shows the Results

• The teacher asked the class: in D-12, how do you analyse the father? Students answered "the 9th house" and "the 9th from A9". Both were set aside.
• The 9th house is the environment.
• The 9th lord — where it is placed, the planets with it and from it, the influences on it — shows the father himself: the intelligence behind him, what he thinks, what he does. Is he a nice person, intellectual, artistic? This is the pāka of the 9th house.
• A9 shows the results: is he having a good time or a bad time, did he go bankrupt, does he have health problems. A student suggested A9 is "the father in physical form"; the teacher said no — the ārūḍha shows results.
• The same holds for the mother with the 4th house, the 4th lord and A4.

Why the lord and not the house

• For the parent's own "lagna", one student wanted to take the 4th house itself. The teacher takes the sign where the 4th lord sits.

"The person is alive. The person is not a situation or circumstances. Graha represents people. So you analyze it from the lord, not from the house."

• The house also shows influences — where she was, how her surroundings were — but he has found the lord very accurate.

The D-12 of the Example Chart

The D-12 placements

• Lagna Libra. Venus in Capricorn (4th). Saturn and Ketu in Aquarius (5th). Mercury and Mars in Gemini (9th). Rahu and Moon in Leo (11th). Jupiter in Virgo (12th). Sun in Scorpio (2nd).
• The teacher states that Mercury and Saturn are both retrograde.

Start with the lagna and the lagna lord

• In any varga chart the lagna is the self. The lagna lord is the native's intelligence and actions in that environment — in D-12, towards the parents.
• Lagna lord Venus is in the 4th house. The native is attached to his mother and will try to do something for her.
• A student asked: thoughts or actions? Both — you cannot act on what you have not thought. Whether it materialises, and how far, is seen from the ārūḍha — AL, because this is about the native himself, not about his mother.

The 4th and 9th lords

• State it in full, step by step: "the 9th house is Gemini, the 9th lord is Mercury, placed with Mars" — not just "9th lord in the 9th".
• 4th lord Saturn is in the 5th, a trine from the lagna.
• 9th lord Mercury is in the 9th, again a trine.
• Both lords in trines: a decent relationship with both parents. This is only step one.

The lagna lord from the two lords

• Venus is a natural friend of both Saturn and Mercury. With the temporary relation added (friend when the other is in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th), Venus is more of a friend to Saturn than to Mercury.
• Say it methodically: "Venus, the lagna lord, is in the 12th from the 4th lord Saturn" and "in the 8th from the 9th lord Mercury".
• So the lagna lord is in a duḥsthāna from both. Do not jump to a conclusion from that. It can mean physical separation. It does not say the relationship is bad, though distance does affect a relationship.
• One participant confirmed it from his own chart: 9th lord in the 8th house. His father was away from his birth; for the first 25 years he saw him three months in a year, and after the father retired he himself moved abroad.

The Mother — from the 4th Lord

• The class was split into two teams, one for each parent.
• The 4th house is Capricorn. Its lord Saturn is in Aquarius. Aquarius becomes the mother's lagna.

Lagna lord in the lagna

• Saturn in Aquarius: lagna lord in the lagna. A fairly smart lady, perhaps with good health.
• Ketu is with Saturn. Venus is in Capricorn, Saturn's other sign — the link of Venus with Saturn that completes the yoga below.

Tapasvi Yoga

• Saturn, Venus and Ketu in combination give Tapasvi Yoga.
• In the example chart's D-12, taken from the mother's lagna Aquarius: Saturn and Ketu are in the lagna, and Venus is in Saturn's sign Capricorn.
• The parts, as the class worked them out:
  • Saturn — hard work.
  • Ketu — detachment.
  • Venus — passion. Tapasya needs passion; without it persistence does not develop.
• The story behind the name: Bhṛgu hung upside down from a tree and did his penance. Upside down is Ketu, the hard work is Saturn, the enthusiasm is Venus.
• Result: a hardworking, passionate person who works without caring what is happening around them, and withstands any weather and any situation.

"For me, it's slightly cold — okay, I will study tomorrow, or I will go to the temple tomorrow, or I will not do my japa today. But such people are not like that."

• Saturn with Ketu also gives vairāgya, a non-materialistic leaning. The native confirmed his mother is spiritual and of that temperament.
• A student raised Saturn and the Moon. The teacher: for vairāgya the Moon is typically afflicted. Nobody turns to tapasya from a comfortable life; people look for a lasting answer after they go through troubles.

The 5th from her lagna — intelligence

• The 5th from Aquarius is Gemini: Mars and Mercury are there, Mercury in its own sign, and Jupiter aspects from Virgo (rāśi dṛṣṭi).
• Mercury and Mars give a sharp intellect. Jupiter's influence gives wisdom. Tough, hardworking, intelligent and wise.
• The native objected: he could not say about her intelligence, because she never studied. The teacher's answer: not being educated does not mean not being intelligent. Every action needs intelligence.
• Confirmed by the native: people keep asking her for advice, and she guides many people even now.

The 10th from her lagna

• The Sun is in the 10th (Scorpio): pride in her work.
• The Sun is the 7th lord. 7th lord in the 10th: she does what she herself wants to do. The 7th is desire, and here it is joined to karma.

Health — Saturn in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna

• The native said her health is not good, against "lagna lord in lagna".
• Lagna lord in the lagna is typically good for health and intelligence. But Saturn in the 1st house is in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna. A lagna lord in MKS with respect to that lagna harms the health. Here Aquarius suffers.
• The other factors: Ketu in the lagna, and Saturn retrograde. Saturn gives lung problems.

The other lord of Aquarius — Rahu

• Rahu, the co-lord of Aquarius, is in the 7th from it (Leo). Lagna lord in the 7th would make her social.
• The native said she is not social. So Saturn prevails.
• The Moon is with Rahu. This is not the mother's own chart, so the Moon here is not "the mind" — it is only the lord of Cancer, the 6th lord in the 7th. That can give problems in relationships. Read the 7th here as relationship in general, not as spouse.
• A student read it as fickle-mindedness. The teacher allowed it as one indication: Saturn by nature is steady, holds its opinion and takes long to change it, but in MKS that quality is reduced.

Feedback is part of the method

• These are broad strokes. If they do not fit, go back, ask, and correct.
• You cannot read everything from the chart unaided. When the native says "she is like this", go back into the chart and see whether it makes sense.

The Father — from the 9th Lord

• The 9th house is Gemini and its lord Mercury is in it. Gemini becomes the father's lagna.

Mercury with Mars in the lagna

• Mercury in its own sign, in Gemini: an intelligent, analytical, logical man.
• Mars is with him: assertive, aggressive, dynamic. Mars is also the 6th lord from Gemini, in the lagna — such people are typically very assertive.
• Mercury and Mars are not the best of friends, and Mars is in Mercury's house.
• A student said Mercury "will act as Mars". The teacher corrected the wording: Mercury is Mercury and Mars is Mars. Say instead that Mercury is influenced by the planet with it. Planets giving each other's results is a matter of when results are delivered, not of what the planet is.
• Here Mercury is in its own sign and retrograde, so the Mercurial qualities prevail over Mars.

Retrograde Planets

• Stated in the example chart's D-12, where Mercury — the 9th lord, taken as the father — is retrograde in its own sign Gemini with Mars.

"Retrograde planet is full of strength. It is as strong as an exalted planet. Cheṣṭā bala means to try. So such a planet is not going to give up."

• So be careful before saying a retrograde planet takes on the role of a planet joined to it. The rules for when one planet is influenced by another are still not clear. The teacher's own view: a retrograde planet stands on its own.
• From one of the Bhṛgu books: three or four sages are discussing a chart with Jupiter in the 5th. One says the kāraka in its own bhāva destroys it. The others say Saturn aspects, so there will be no child. Then Pārvatī comes and says they are all wrong — this person will definitely have a child, because Jupiter is retrograde.
• Cheṣṭā bala is unpredictable. A retrograde planet does not conform to the rule of the Sun and the Moon, who are always direct.
• Give retrograde planets respect, and do not club this exception together with the other rules. Take it step by step.

3rd, 6th and 9th from his lagna

• Rahu in the 3rd (Leo) and the Sun in the 6th (Scorpio): malefics in the 3rd and 6th. A fighter — "I will get my thing done". Hardworking, but not in the mother's way: he works at removing the obstacle.
• Saturn in the 9th (Aquarius): a student said "traditionalist". The teacher: look at the trines and see which planet is stronger. Mercury is stronger and prevails. Saturn's share is that he does not lean to blind faith. He is sceptical at first, but sincere.

"Saturn, when he doubts, is because he has a doubt, not because he wants to create doubts or prove anything. Rahu is different that way."

Bādhakeśa in the 4th

• For Gemini, a dual sign, the bādhakeśa is the 7th lord Jupiter. Jupiter is in the 4th (Virgo).
• Bādhakeśa in the 4th shows instability of house and home — in childhood or throughout life. A student had guessed that the father kept moving from place to place.

Occupation — 10th lord in the 4th

• Jupiter is also the 10th lord from Gemini, in the 4th.
• The 4th house is learning; it is also healing — doctoring, nursing (kārakas Moon and Mercury).
• The 4th house and Virgo both point to farming.
• Jupiter there does not make him a different kind of farmer; it shows the extent of knowledge.

What the native confirmed

• His father's job kept him travelling all the time.
• He is an education instructor for farmers — he teaches farmers.

"We did not jump to conclusion. We did not try and club multiple parameters together. We took one and analyzed how it made an effect. That way things become very clear, and you know what the role of each parameter is."

What the Lord Analysis Leaves to the Ārūḍha

• Everything said about the mother and the father in Parts 7 and 8 came from the lords. It is all about what the person is and does.

"We did not say he was successful or not. We did not say did he have health problem. All that will come from ārūḍha."

• The mother's long working day — up at 4 AM, cooking for everyone, the market, to bed at 10 — is seen from the 4th lord. Whether the work bears fruit is seen from A4.
• The lagna and lagna lord show what moves the person from within. That may not be what ends up manifesting.
• Example given from another student's chart: Libra rising, Mars in the 4th giving Ruchaka Mahāpuruṣa Yoga — tremendous energy within. But her Ārūḍha Lagna is in Gemini, so she comes across as friendly and social. She confirmed it.
• How the person comes across, how all that inner energy finally manifests, and the final results, are seen from the ārūḍha.
