Argala — Planetary Intervention

Argala (intervention or bolt): planets in the 2nd, 4th, and 11th from any sign decisively modify its outcomes. Virodha Argala (obstruction) from the 12th, 10th, and 3rd can cancel it. The three layers of planetary influence: aspects, Argala, and occupation. Why a planet far from a house can be more decisive than a direct aspect.

"The word "Anargala" (without bolt) means free-flowing, unobstructed. That is why "Anargala speech" means smooth, flowing speech — speech without any bolt or obstruction."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Argala (Intervention)

Meaning

The literal Sanskrit meaning of Argala is "the bolt on a door" — something that locks a particular aspect of a house conclusively. In modern textbooks, it is translated as intervention.

The word "Anargala" (without bolt) = free-flowing, unobstructed. That's why "Anargala speech" means smooth, flowing speech — speech without any bolt/obstruction.

What Argala Does

A planet that has Argala on a house locks a particular aspect of that house conclusively. It makes a decisive, formal intervention — it is not just desire (Graha Drishti) or proximity-influence (Rashi Drishti), but a binding determination of some matter related to that house.

The Three Types of Argala

Counted from the house in question (not from the planet):

Argala TypePositionWhat It Controls
Secondary Argala2nd house from targetControls the resources and sustenance of that house
Primary Argala4th house from targetControls the happiness and direction of that house
Desire Argala11th house from targetControls the gains and fulfillment of desires of that house

How to think about it:

  • 2nd from any house = the resources feeding that house
  • 4th from any house = the sukha (comfort/happiness) and direction of that house
  • 11th from any house = the gains and fulfillment related to that house

So if a planet sits in the 2nd, 4th, or 11th from a house, that planet has Argala on that house — it locks something about it.

Example Using Sri Rama's Chart

In Rama's chart (Lagna in Cancer):

  • 10th house = Aries (career)
  • Planets in the 2nd from 10th (= Taurus = 11th house) have Argala on career
  • Planets in the 4th from 10th (= Cancer = 1st house) have Argala on career
  • Planets in the 11th from 10th (= Aquarius = 8th house) have Argala on career

So you check: which planets sit in these positions? Those planets conclusively intervene in Rama's career matters.

Virodha Argala (Obstruction to Intervention)

For each type of Argala, there is a counter-position that can block it:

Argala FromVirodha Argala (Obstruction) FromLogic
2nd house12th house12th = loss, opposes the 2nd's resources
4th house10th house10th = karma/action, opposes the 4th's comfort
11th house3rd house3rd = initiative/effort, opposes the 11th's gains

The Cancellation Rule

Virodha Argala cancels Argala only if the obstructing planets are stronger (more in number or stronger in dignity) than the Argala-causing planets. If the Argala planets are stronger, the Virodha Argala fails and the Argala stands.

The Special Rule for Malefics in the 3rd

Natural malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, Sun) in the 3rd house from a target house cause a special Argala instead of just Virodha Argala. The 3rd house is the house of initiative, courage, and drive. Malefics (who are naturally aggressive, hard-working, or destructive) in the 3rd from a house actually intervene forcefully in that house's matters rather than merely obstructing.

This makes logical sense: initiative (3rd house) powered by aggression/hard-work (malefic energy) = a forceful, conclusive push.

Summary: Three Layers of Planetary Influence

Understanding a planet's influence on any house requires checking all three:

LayerQuestionTool
1. Graha DrishtiDoes this planet want to influence this house?Check planetary aspect rules
2. Rashi DrishtiIs this planet positioned to influence this house?Check sign-based aspect rules
3. ArgalaDoes this planet conclusively determine something about this house?Check 2nd, 4th, 11th positions (and Virodha Argala)

A planet with all three on a house has maximum influence — desire + ability + decisive intervention.

Practical Examples Discussed in Class

Sri Rama's chart was used throughout to illustrate:

  • How to find which planets have Graha Drishti on each house
  • How to find Rashi Drishti based on sign types
  • How to find Argala and Virodha Argala
  • How all three layers combine to determine actual planetary influence
