Annual TP Analysis — Methodology, Multiple-Planet Exchange & Gandanta Warning

Example chart

A student gives the class a puzzle: his father's chart and a date. The class has to work out what happened on that date.

Lagna 22°41' Libra with debilitated Sun in it. Moon 15°41' Cancer. The student has checked the time against all the events of the life.

The puzzle: Something happened on January 14, 1980. What was it?

Annual TP chart (Tithi Pravesha) for 1979–80

He was born in October, so January 1980 belongs to the year that began in 1979.

• Tithi Pravesha: November 12, 1979, about 10:10 PM, at the birthplace. (The recording sounds like "10:20 PM". The chart read in class — Gemini rising with five and a half minutes left before the lagna changes — is the 10:10 PM chart; at 10:20 PM Cancer rises.)
• Hora lord (ruler of the year): Saturn
• Lagna: Gemini, with Mandi
• 3rd house, Leo: Mars (4th degree), Moon (8th degree), Rahu (11th degree), Jupiter (14th degree)
• 4th house, Virgo: Saturn
• 5th house, Libra: Sun, debilitated
• 6th house, Scorpio: Mercury (11°) and Venus (16°)
• 9th house, Aquarius: Ketu
• Tithi Ashtottari dasha of the TP chart on January 14, 1980: Mars had just started. The calculation can be a day off, so it could also be the very end of Moon.
• If it was still Moon: by the exchange rule (section 3) Moon gives Mars's results, and Mars is the 6th and 11th lord in the 3rd.

Rahu sits between Moon and Jupiter and afflicts both closely. There is a Gajakesari yoga, but both its planets are afflicted by Rahu. Mars is a little away from Rahu; the planet closest to him is Moon.

No Kala Sarpa or Kala Amrita yoga: Moon and Mars are on one side of Rahu, Jupiter on the other.

Exchange Rule for Several Planets Together

Covered in an earlier class and applied here. When several planets are together in a sign they switch results.

The method:

1. Arrange the planets in order of natural beneficence — the most benefic first, the worst malefic last. Degrees do not matter.
2. Pair the first with the last, the second with the second from last, and so on. Each pair exchanges results.

In the TP chart: four planets in Leo, in the order Jupiter, Moon, Mars, Rahu.

• Moon ↔ Mars
• Jupiter ↔ Rahu

So Mars, the dasha lord of the day, will mainly give Moon's results.

Caution given at once:

"If I and somebody I hate are together, then we may not really speak. So there may be some exceptions."

It is the thumb rule of the classics and works most of the time.

Jupiter, Moon and Sun do not exchange with Rahu

A student asks how the exchange works in the natal chart, where Moon, Rahu and Jupiter are together in Cancer.

"Even Mars may be willing to exchange results with Rahu, but Jupiter, Moon, and Sun will never exchange results with Rahu."

• Rahu with just one other planet, and that planet is Jupiter, Moon or Sun: do not exchange. Each gives its own results. This much is a firm thumb rule.
• Two of the three with Rahu (Sun + Jupiter + Rahu, Sun + Moon + Rahu, Moon + Jupiter + Rahu): the exchange is even less likely.
• A mediator can make it happen. With Mercury, Rahu and Jupiter together, Mercury may mediate — the student tells the teacher "there is something good in him", and the teacher, out of love for the student, goes along. Moon is no such mediator: when Jupiter says "I hate that guy", Moon will not argue for Rahu.
• A third or fourth planet makes it tricky (for example Jupiter + Mars + Rahu). Look at who aspects them, who their dispositor is and whether he is a friend of Rahu, and decide. There is no thumb rule that works perfectly. Use intuition whenever Rahu or Ketu is involved.

In the natal chart: Moon is in his own house and does not like Rahu. Jupiter is exalted and comfortable. Rahu is ignored by both. They are irritated by him, but they will not swap clothes with him. So Jupiter gives his own results — those of the 3rd and 6th lord in Gandanta.

Gandanta — The Most Important Warning

The student now asks the class to look at the natal Vimshottari dasha. On January 14, 1980 it was Venus dasha, Jupiter antardasha. The class does not know how big the event was, so it starts with the antardasha lord.

Jupiter in the natal chart:

• Exalted in Cancer in the 10th — but he is the 3rd and 6th lord for Libra lagna, a functional malefic.
• Moon and Rahu are with him. Rahu is the closer of the two. Some affliction.
• He is the Atmakaraka. Atmakaraka dashas and antardashas are periods of tribulation.
• He is in the last degree of Cancer.

Definition: Gandanta is the border between a water sign and a fire sign:

• Pisces / Aries
• Cancer / Leo
• Scorpio / Sagittarius

The last navamsa of the water sign and the first navamsa of the fire sign are Gandanta. The last degree and the first degree are particularly bad.

"The real definition is not 1 degree, it is 1 navamsa. One navamsa on both sides is Gandanta. But 1 degree is even stronger. And here it is not even 1 degree, it is less than 10 minutes. It is 9 minutes."

Jupiter is 9 arc-minutes from the Cancer–Leo border: Ashlesha Gandanta. It applies to any planet — Rahu, Jupiter, Moon — and to the lagna itself.

Reading: a functional malefic, 6th lord, in extreme Gandanta, afflicted by Rahu. He will not exchange with Rahu (section 3), so he gives his own result. The event is a negative one, and since he is the 6th lord it could be an accident. He is in the 10th, so a student asks whether it happened at the workplace. It could; decide that from D-6.

Natal D-6 (Leo lagna) confirms it:

• Jupiter is the 8th lord in the 8th in Pisces. The 8th shows sudden injuries.
• He is with Mars, the planet of suddenness. Mars is the badhakesha.
• Mars is lord of A6 and Jupiter lord of A8.
• Two planets together: Jupiter gives Mars's result in matters of D-6 — fighting, being hit. A terrible, sudden hit.

The lesson:

"If you see any planets in Gandanta like this, never ignore that, because those planets will give something serious in life."

• Maybe not in every dasha or antardasha of that planet, but it is in him to do it.
• Jupiter is the greatest protector. Even he does this when in Gandanta.
• It does not need a malefic or a 6th lord. Any planet in Gandanta can bring something serious to the body in its dasha.
• When a planet is this close to the border, some mishap is likely in its antardasha. If other factors show something else, you are missing something.
• When the same thing is corroborated in D-6, the person is very unlikely to escape that antardasha.

Remedy:

"If he did Mrityunjaya mantra for the previous 40 days, every day 108 times, maybe the accident would have been less intense. That is all we can do as astrologers. We cannot avoid it, but we can reduce the magnitude."

Mantras may or may not help when the affliction is this bad. But advise them. People do not come asking "what happened to me in 1982"; they come asking about a job. If you see a planet in Gandanta, or in Marana Karaka Sthana badly afflicted by Rahu, the 8th lord or the badhakesha, expect some evil in its antardasha and give a remedy.
