D10 Career Traced 1998-2005 — Artha vs Kama Trikonas, Eclipse of Luminaries & Bhoga/Paaka

Method — Test Yourself on the Past

The previous class worked a future prediction. This class works a chart where every outcome is known.

• When he was learning, the teacher spent a lot of time on the client's past: "Did it happen? Did it happen like this?"
• The client does not care about the past. The astrologer should.
• If something stands out in a daśā, go to the annual chart of that year. If the suspicion is confirmed, ask: "How was this year? Did this happen?"
• A future prediction gives feedback after three months or a year, and often the person never reports back. The past gives it at once.

"When you are right, it gives you confidence, and when you are wrong, it shows you your weakness. Either way, it is good."

The class plays astrologer. The teacher plays the native: "Let us assume that I am this person. Actually, I am not." The birth time is taken as accurate — no rectification in this class.

• Rāśi lagna: 21°19' Libra. Moon: 4°57' Sagittarius.
• Vimśottarī: Venus daśā till 1999, Sun 1999 – July 2005, Moon from July 2005.

D-10 (Daśāṁśa) — Taurus lagna

• 2nd house Gemini: Mercury (own sign) + Mars.
• 3rd house Cancer: Venus (lagna lord and 6th lord).
• 7th house Scorpio: Jupiter (8th and 11th lord) + Rāhu (co-lord of the 10th, Aquarius) — Guru-Cāṇḍāla yoga.
• 8th house Sagittarius: Saturn.
• 9th house Capricorn: Moon (3rd lord).
• 12th house Aries: Sun (4th lord), exalted.
• Lagna: Ketu.
• Ārūḍha Lagna is Virgo. Mercury is its lord and sits in the 10th from it.

D-9 (Navāṁśa) — Aries lagna

• Jupiter is the 9th lord, in Gemini in the 3rd. He aspects the 9th house by both rāśi dṛṣṭi and graha dṛṣṭi.
• Sun is the 5th lord in the 5th (Leo), 7th from Venus (Aquarius).
• UL and the Dārapada (A7) are in Gemini, with Jupiter.

Artha Trikoṇa in D-10 — Field of Work; Kāma Trikoṇa — Business

The houses of career in D-10 are the artha trikoṇa: 2nd, 6th, 10th. Here they are Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.

• Ask which of the three carries the strong influences. The 2nd dominates: Mercury in own sign with Mars.
• Mercury + Mars = a technical field. Computer science and software fit. Mercury also points to communications work.
• Verdict for the native: "He is in the right field." No reason to tell him to become a musician.

The published class notes state the rule in general form:

• Artha trikoṇa (2nd, 6th, 10th) the stronger in D-10 → the person does service.
• Kāma trikoṇa (3rd, 7th, 11th) the stronger → the person does business.
• Here the 2nd is very strong, so service. Mercury shows intellectual work such as computers.

On the recording, business comes up only under Moon daśā (Part 4): Moon is the 3rd lord and sits in A7. That links two kāma trikoṇa houses (3rd and 7th), so Moon can give an enterprise.

January 1998 — Will He Get a Job? (Natal D-10)

Situation: Age 23. Came to the USA in August 1996 for an MS in computer science. Doing co-ops, MS nearly over, looking for a full-time job. Wonders if he will have to go back to India. Daśā: Venus–Mercury.

Venus–Mercury — the first job

• Mercury is in the 12th from Venus (Venus in Cancer, Mercury in Gemini). The 12th from Mercury is the lagna. Bhoga falls in lagna — a start, a beginning.
• Venus owns the lagna. Mercury owns the 2nd (money) and the 5th (recognition).
• Mercury is lord of the Ārūḍha Lagna and sits in the 10th from it.
• Reading: good chance of a good job in Mercury antardaśā; the career gets a jump-start.
• The rest of Venus daśā is fine too. Venus is in the 3rd, but he is lagna lord and 6th lord and takes care of the career.

Sun daśā (1999–2005) — unstable, not terrible

• Sun is the 4th lord in the 12th house, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. Loss of direction and comfort; no peace for six years.
• From Ārūḍha Lagna he is in the 8th. A dusthāna from both lagna and AL shows change and instability. Mercury and Venus, as 5th lord and lagna lord, could give stability; Sun cannot.
• Sun is lord of UL — some compromise or loss.
• Sun is in A3 — short breaks, contract jobs, or a lot of travel in the job. The 12th house itself shows travel. He may keep a main job and take small contracts on the side.
• Why it is not terrible: a mokṣa trikoṇa lord in another mokṣa trikoṇa, and exalted.
• A student's point, accepted by the teacher: a long layoff needs 3rd or 8th house involvement. Sun has none; he is only in the 12th.
• Reading: strain, travel, some unhappiness, some loss of comfort, but "still okay in career". No exponential growth right after the start.

Moon daśā (from July 2005)

• Moon is the 3rd lord in the 9th house. For Taurus lagna the 9th is the bādhaka sthāna.
• From Ārūḍha Lagna he is in the 5th.
• He owns A11 (gains) and occupies A6 and A7. A6 = job; A7 = partnerships, contacts.
• Either a job that brings many contacts, or a job that slowly turns into business. Contract work is possible too.
• Bādhaka sthāna: "By no means is it great." Unexpected issues come up — problems in the career that cannot be explained.

What he was told in 1998

Computer science is the right line. Try for computer and communications jobs. "Go full throttle, keep sending your resume. You will get a good job this year." From 1999 to 2005 expect slowness and instability; be prepared. After Moon daśā begins, things take off again.

Annual Chart 1998 — the First Job Year

Tithi Praveśa: January 24, 1998, 3:37:05 PM IST. Ruler of the year (hora lord): Jupiter.

Rāśi of the year — Gemini lagna

• Jupiter is the 10th lord in the 9th house, with Mars and Ketu.
• Saturn (9th lord) is in the 10th. The 9th and 10th lords are in parivartana.
• The ruler of the year is well placed, in a good yoga.

D-10 of the year — Leo lagna

• Jupiter is the 5th and 8th lord in the 8th house (Pisces). "8th lord in 8th is a good yoga."
• Mars, the 4th and 9th lord, is with him: Guru-Maṅgala yoga and a rāja yoga of kendra and trikoṇa lords. (The recording says "6th and 9th, and 4th and 5th lords"; in the chart Mars owns the 4th and 9th, Jupiter the 5th and 8th.)
• One is in own house, the other in a friend's house. Both are in A5 — tangible recognition of ability.
• Lagna lord Sun is in the 5th house of recognition, and his dispositor is Jupiter, the ruler of the year. Lagna lord in the 5th is good for recognition, the more so when it is Sun.

Verdict: a good year to find a job. Do not tell him to spend one more year at the university.

Asked which pūjā to suggest, the students offered Śiva and Śrī Rāma. The teacher: "Any deity is fine."

Outcome: the 1998 reading held. He found a full-time job, kept the MS pending, changed jobs a few times, went back and finished the MS, and at one point held a full-time job with a small contract for an earlier employer on the side — the A3 reading of Sun daśā.

September 2001 — Sun–Jupiter and the Job (Natal Chart)

Situation: Age 26. Works at a dot-com. After September 11 the economy falls and he feels "negative vibes" at the company. His family is also looking at alliances for him. Daśā: Sun–Jupiter.

A student wanted to go straight to the annual chart. The teacher: spend a little time on the natal chart first; the antardaśā is only eight or ten months long.

Jupiter in the natal D-10

• 8th and 11th lord: by ownership a plain functional malefic.
• 8th lord in the 7th house. 8th lord in 7th, or 7th lord in 8th, are combinations of death. In D-10 that is the end of a job.
• The 7th is also the māraka sthāna from the 6th (2nd from the 6th house of service).
• Guru-Cāṇḍāla yoga with Rāhu. Guru-Cāṇḍāla can be a dharma-karmādhipati yoga if the two are 9th and 10th lords. Here they are the 8th and 10th lords together — "It is terrible. It is bad for the career."
• Jupiter and Rāhu are not friendly: put them in one hotel room and each stands in his own corner. No friendly exchange of results softens it.
• Pāka: Jupiter is in the 8th from Sun, the daśā lord.
• Bhoga: the 8th from Jupiter is Gemini, the 2nd house — good, but the pāka stays a concern.
• From Ārūḍha Lagna Jupiter is in the 3rd. He is badly placed from lagna and from AL alike.

What saves him

• In D-9 Jupiter is the 9th lord — the great protector. In the rāśi chart he is 3rd and 6th lord of Libra lagna.
• Together: he protects, but by making the native toil and fight obstacles.

"He will bless him with luck. At the same time, he has to use that luck to fight."

• Jupiter owns the sign holding A4 (comfort) and A5 (recognition), and sits in A9 (tangible fortune — when things look bad, something suddenly works out).
• Jupiter is in a fixed sign. When he gives a job, it is a job held for a long time.

Aṣṭakavarga

Jupiter has 7 points (in the D-10, as read out in class).

"Whatever his agenda is, he has the cooperation of all the planets. He says, 'Boys, let's give him a job' — everybody says yes. If he says, 'Boys, let him lose his job' — everybody will say yes."

Verdict from the natal chart

The class put the chance of losing the job at 70–80%. The teacher's question: with the 8th lord in the 7th in Guru-Cāṇḍāla, can he stay in the job whatever the saving graces? The break comes, with fortune after it. Jupiter cuts the wandering career and gives a long job.

Annual Chart 2001 — Moon Eclipsed in Lagna

Tithi Praveśa: January 20, 2001, 6:55:11 AM IST. Ruler of the year: Saturn — in the 2nd house of the year's D-10, in own sign.

D-10 of the year — Sagittarius lagna; the remaining daśās

• Venus: the daśā running when he asked (from August 2001). 6th lord, debilitated, in the 10th. He is A8 lord, but his agenda as 6th lord is service. An artha trikoṇa lord in another artha trikoṇa. Not likely to break the job.
• Sun: 9th lord in the 12th, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna. The lord of protection withdraws protection.
• Moon: 8th lord in lagna, with Rāhu (3rd lord), eclipsed.
• Mars: in the 6th house.

Moon and Rāhu in lagna

• Anything in lagna gives some protection; lagna is the career as a whole.
• But the agendas are malefic. Moon as 8th lord wants a long break. Rāhu as 3rd lord wants a short break.
• A student's defence of the Moon: friendly sign (Jupiter's), in A4, in the 10th from Ārūḍha Lagna, and lagna lord Jupiter has argalā on him and aspects him by rāśi dṛṣṭi from Pisces. Moon and Jupiter in mutual kendras = Gajakesarī yoga.
• The teacher: 8th lord in 8th itself is better than 8th lord in lagna or the 10th. 8th lord in lagna is bad; with Rāhu it is doubly bad.
• The natal Jupiter, whose agenda is to break the career, influences this lagna and this Moon–Rāhu pair.
• The negatives dominate in both the natal chart and the annual chart.

The rule — eclipse of a luminary in an annual chart

"Whenever you have Sun or Moon being eclipsed in an annual chart, you should be concerned. If Sun or Moon is with Rāhu or Ketu, you should be very concerned."

• Rāhu does not oppose the Moon's agenda. He has none of his own. He embraces the Moon and the Moon is confused. This is a different thing from debilitation or exaltation.

"If the planet wants to do good and he is being eclipsed, he will not be able to do that good. If the planet wants to do bad and he is eclipsed, he will do that bad in a double measure."

• So the eclipse of Sun or Moon is never good, whatever their agenda in the chart.
• Asked why it is worse than in the natal chart: in the natal chart it is bad too, but its result may come at one point of life. In a Tithi Praveśa chart it is a key feature of the whole year. Any good or bad combination gives more pronounced results in the annual chart than in the natal chart.
• It holds in every divisional chart: Sun or Moon with a node means a setback in the agenda of that planet in that chart.
• The nodes spoil any planet they join, but with Jupiter or Mars they use only a little energy. Troubling Sun and Moon is the goal of their life. The teacher's comparison: a batsman who plays his best against one particular team.

What he was told in September 2001

Moon daśā of the year runs November 22 – January 12. "November, December, January is a very critical period." You cannot tell him "you are losing your job, type your resume" — but tell him to be careful and to keep the resume ready. A strong chance that he loses the job, and he gets another.

Bhoga and Pāka

Raised by a student on Sun–Jupiter and confirmed by the teacher.

Three uses in this class:

For marriage: if the bhoga is in the 1st, 7th or 9th house of D-9, the antardaśā can give marriage.

The Layoff and the New Job — Annual Daśās, November 2001 – February 2002

These are the daśās of the 2001 annual chart (Tithi Aṣṭottarī), not Vimśottarī.

He needed the job and the H-1 papers before leaving for his wedding in mid-February; without them even his own return was a problem. He had them in time.

Lesson 1 — a terrible antardaśā must give its result

The class had picked Moon–Jupiter for the new job. Moon–Rāhu came right after it, and Rāhu is the antardaśā of maximum tension in an eclipsed Moon's daśā.

"Even if you find that a particular antardaśā is good, if a terrible antardaśā was coming after it, it is unlikely that you would have found a job, because the terrible antardaśā has to give a terrible result."

Had he found a job in Moon–Jupiter, Moon–Rāhu would have had nothing to give.

Why Moon–Moon gave the offer

• Moon–Venus and Moon–Sun show no promise. Moon–Venus also fell in the holiday season, when a new job is unlikely.
• Sun is the 9th lord and lord of A11, and sits in A9 and A10 — but in the 12th house, his maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
• Moon is in lagna, so the bhoga of Moon–Moon falls in lagna. "Any planet in lagna can give a new beginning."
• He is in a friendly sign, Jupiter's.
• He is in A4. A4 is comfort; in this situation the better word is relief. The kāraka of the 4th house is the Moon himself. The kāraka of the 4th in A4, and that in lagna.
• Gajakesarī yoga with Jupiter.
• Against: Moon is 8th lord and Rāhu provokes him to give 8th-house results even more. That same combination took the job away.
• The Moon gives both results in his own daśā. In the last antardaśā, Moon–Moon, he is by himself without other influences, and undoes the damage before he leaves.

Lesson 2 — check the next daśā before you name the period

"When you say this is the period when you will get an offer, you have to make sure that the next daśā is favourable for joining the job. Otherwise, even if the previous daśā seems favourable, maybe your analysis is wrong."

Mars daśā of the 2001 annual chart (from January 12):

• In the rāśi of the year Mars is in the 10th house.
• In the D-10 of the year he is in the 6th house, the house of service. A malefic in the 6th overcomes obstacles and wins. (The recording says "6th lord in the 6th"; in the cast chart Mars is the 5th lord — a functional benefic, as the teacher calls him — placed in the 6th.)
• From Ārūḍha Lagna he is in the 3rd: initiative, hard work, obstacles overcome, a feeling of victory.

He went back to work as soon as Mars daśā began. He then stayed in that one job for more than three years, to the end of Sun daśā in 2005. It demanded heavy travel — Sun in A3.

Remedies Given in This Chart

September 2001 — Jupiter antardaśā

• A student proposed "Om Namaḥ Śivāya Namo Mallikārjunāya".
• The teacher: Jupiter's antardaśā is running, so propitiate Jupiter so that his bad results come in a lesser degree. The devatā of Jupiter is Śiva. This mantra covers Śiva, so it works.
• In the annual chart the Moon troubles during those two months: do something for Pārvatī.

December 2001 — out of work

• The planet important for career in the natal rāśi chart is the Moon, the 10th lord. For the Moon: Lord Kṛṣṇa.
• The teacher's own choice was Venus:
  • In D-10 Venus owns the sign of A10 and is the lagna lord — the foundation of the career.
  • In the rāśi chart Venus is lord of A10 and A5.
  • A10 is the tangible work you do in society — the job you go to every day, as against work in general.
  • Lord of A10 in both rāśi and D-10: "I shortlisted Venus as the key planet for his career."
• He was told to read the Lakṣmī Aṣṭottaram (108 names of Lakṣmī) every day. It took him fifteen minutes at first. He did it daily from that meeting on, and the call came in Moon–Moon.

The astrologer's own mantra

The teacher does this pūjā himself every Friday.

"If you yourself have done some sādhanā of that mantra, it will be more effective for that person. They will get some part of your own pūjā power, your own spiritual power."

• A mantra you do not know yourself is less effective when you prescribe it.
• So lean towards the mantras you have practised, wherever they apply to the chart.

Fasting

• A student's suggestion, accepted: fast on Friday. As you fast on the UL lord's day for marriage, fast on the A10 lord's day for the career to grow.
• The teacher: if the worry is career, go with the A10 lord's day. If the worry is family life, wife, children, go with the UL lord's day.
• Take A10 of the rāśi chart. Example from the class notes: A10 in Pisces → fast on Thursday.
• In this rāśi chart UL and A10 are both in Taurus, so Venus rules both. One day, Friday, serves both, and the deity is Lakṣmī.
