Two House Constructions — Annual Chart Double Link, Conditional Dasa Scope & Benefic vs Malefic Building Dasha

Events:

1. Construction of a house in India began January 19, 1991 and finished in August; the family moved in during October 1991 and lived in it.
2. A second house was built in the USA from September 1999; they moved in on February 10, 2000 and live there.

A student asks how to tell moving into an existing house from constructing a new one. The teacher does not know a rule for it. Hard work can come either way — one buyer he knows took a house from a bank and had two years of repairs to do.

D4 Placements

• Mercury (lagna lord) and Mars (3rd and 8th lord) in Gemini, the 10th.
• Jupiter (4th lord) and Saturn (5th lord) in Capricorn, the 5th — a Raja Yoga of the 4th and 5th lords.
• Ketu (3rd lord) in Aquarius, the 6th, which is A4.
• Rahu (6th lord) in Leo, the 12th, which is A8.
• Sun (12th lord) in Taurus, the 9th. Venus (9th lord) in Aries, the 8th.
• AL and A6 are in Sagittarius.

The Conditional Dasha Does Not Show It

• The 10th lord is in the 10th in the rasi chart, so Chaturaseeti Sama Dasha applies. It gives Venus–Venus for 1991, and Venus is in the 8th of D4.
• The teacher asks for an honest answer. The class says it makes no sense. The 4th and 3rd houses should be involved and are not.
• A house in the spouse's name is still his house if he built it to live in; it must show in his chart.

Vimshottari, 1991: Ketu–Saturn

• Ketu is the 3rd lord, of investing in property, in the 6th house — a malefic lord of the 3rd in the malefic 6th, well placed — and he sits in A4.
• Saturn is the 5th lord in the 5th: purva punya. He is with Jupiter and so gives Jupiter's results. Saturn also co-owns Aquarius, which is A4. Jupiter is the 4th lord, of comfort and house, and owns Sagittarius, which holds AL and A6 — a big loan or big labour.
• The dasha lord is in the 6th and the antardasha lord is tied to A6: he overcomes many obstacles. At that time building a house in India meant hard work.

"The 4th lord and the 5th lord together — that's the blessings of Maha Vishnu in the matters of D4, in the matters of real estate."

• 3rd house, 4th lord, A4, 5th house, 6th house: every parameter is met.

Narayana Dasha of D4, 1991

• As first calculated the event falls in Gemini dasha, Leo antardasha (construction) and Virgo antardasha (moving in). Gemini aspects the 4th house and holds Mars, karaka of real estate. It shows the event only vaguely. See Part 6: the teacher recalculates without the Saturn exception.
• Without the exception the dasha runs backwards and 1991 falls in Leo dasha.
• Leo is sirshodaya: its own results come in the first third. The lord Sun is in Taurus, prishtodaya: his results come in the last third.
• The middle third, September 1990 to September 1991, is one year. Four planets occupy or aspect Leo — Rahu in it; Venus, Jupiter and Saturn by rasi drishti — so each gets three months.
• Order: Venus (27°54′) first, Rahu second, Jupiter and Saturn third and fourth.
• Rahu's quarter, December 16, 1990 to March 14, 1991: construction began. Rahu owns A4 and is 7th from it. He is 9th from AL, protecting status. He is the 6th lord in the 12th — Vipareeta Raja Yoga. He is also in A8: tension and anxiety over the venture.
• Jupiter and Saturn, March to September 1991: most of the construction. They give the yoga of the 4th and 5th lords and aspect the 12th house of expenditure. Things went smoothly.
• Moving in, October 1991: Virgo antardasha. Virgo is lagna. The dasha or antardasha of lagna brings a new beginning — in D10 a new job or a new line, in D4 a new house or rearranging the old one.
• A11 falls in Virgo lagna: manifested gain.
• By the three-parts rule October falls in the last third: Sun's results. Sun is the 12th lord, of displacement, in the 9th house of fortune.

"It's not basically losing something, not basically moving to a bad place. It's basically moving to a nice, warm house. So he gave displacement as well as fortune."

• On selling: a student asks about selling a house. The 11th must also be involved, since money comes in even on a sale at a loss. Afflictions to the 11th show a gain that is less than hoped.
• A8 with Rahu shows anxiety about the venture. An accident cannot be read from D4.

Second House, 1999–2000: Venus–Mars

• Vimshottari: Venus mahadasha, Mars antardasha.
• Mars is the karaka of real estate and the 3rd lord, of investment. He aspects the Saturn–Jupiter Raja Yoga by graha drishti (his 8th aspect). He is also 3rd from Venus.
• In the Narayana Dasha this house was built in Gemini dasha: Mercury, the lagna lord, in his own sign with Mars.

Rule: Benefic or Malefic Dasha at the Time of Building

• The first house came in Ketu mahadasha and in Leo dasha — the 12th house, holding Rahu. The second came in the dasha of Venus, the 9th lord, and in Gemini dasha.
• Ketu is in the 6th house of obstacles and Leo is the 12th: the first home came with obstacles and compromises. Gemini holds Mercury in his own sign in a quadrant, giving Bhadra Mahapurusha Yoga: the second house met no obstacles.

"When a property is constructed in the dasha of a malefic planet or a dusthana, there can be gain from that house. You can make a lot of money from that house, but you may not get a lot of happiness from it, or you may not live there for a long time."

• A house built in the dasha of benefic planets, or of signs and planets tied to good houses — a trine or a quadrant — makes the native happier there. He does good work in it, prospers, and lives in it longer.

Tithi Pravesha 1999–2000

• Displacement is seen from the 12th and 8th houses: losing one residence and moving to another.
• A4 is in the 12th house (Sagittarius): giving up a residence.
• The 4th house holds Venus, the yogakaraka for Capricorn: he is happy with his residence in the year.
• The 4th lord Mars is in UL (Aquarius): a tangible change. A4 in the 12th and the 4th lord in the arudha of the 12th make a double link between the 4th and the 12th. That shows a change of residence.
• Sun, the hora lord, is the 8th lord in the 5th house of purva punya. In the rasi chart of the year he is in the 11th.
• Lagna is strong: the lagna lord Saturn is in lagna, with Rahu. Jupiter, lord of the 12th and 3rd, is linked with Ketu (the two are together in Cancer in D4).
• He moved in on February 10, 2000, in Mercury's period. Mercury is the 9th lord in the 9th, exalted. D4 is the chart of fortune: fortune manifests.
• In the rasi chart of the year (lagna Libra) the same Mercury is the 9th lord exalted in the 12th house: fortune through displacement.

Tithi Pravesha of 1990–91 and 1991–92

• 1990–91: construction began in January, in Mercury's period. Mercury is with Mars and gives Mars's results. Mars is the 3rd and 8th lord: putting money into a house.
• 1991–92 (year began September 14, 1991): he moved in October — Sun's period or Moon's? Sun is in lagna and is a malefic in the 3rd from AL, so he is seen to have much initiative in this matter. Sun is the likelier: in the D4 lagna he gives a new beginning in 4th-house matters. A student argues for Moon as showing the hard work; the teacher grants the point but holds Sun the strong candidate.

Dasha Pravesha Chart

• Cast a chart for the moment a Narayana mahadasha begins and look at its D4. A sign that holds, or is owned by, a strong or helpful planet there can give the event in its antardasha. A sign with a good yoga in it gives an auspicious period.
• In this native's Gemini dasha pravesha D4, as the teacher reads it: Taurus holds Sun, the lagna lord; Leo is lagna and holds Jupiter, the purva punya lord; Virgo is owned by Mercury, strong in his own sign. Construction began in Leo antardasha, the first move came in Virgo antardasha, the second move in Taurus antardasha.

Conditional Dasa — Scope and Limitations

• The 10th lord in the 10th shows strong karma to be done. Events of that area are seen best in Chaturaseeti Sama Dasha. Lagna lord in the 7th or 7th lord in lagna shows a strong desire; events of fulfilling that desire are seen best in the dasha that condition gives.

"For each special dasha, there is a focus area in which it is absolutely the best, and as it deviates from the focus area, it starts becoming less effective."

• There are no clear guidelines for where the focus area ends. The teacher does not think the knowledge on conditional dashas is perfect: some charts show other events in them clearly, and some, like this one, do not.
• His working rule: when a conditional dasha applies, try it. If it makes no sense in a particular divisional chart, ignore it there and go back to Vimshottari.
• The condition is judged in the rasi chart only. The dasha is then applied to events in the divisional charts.

"Vimshottari Dasha is like the character actor who always does well in any movie that you watch."

• In some films a hero takes the limelight from him. In a film with no hero, the character actor is the best actor on the set.

Narayana Dasha of D4 — Starting Sign and the Saturn Exception

• The Narayana Dasha of a divisional chart Dn starts from the sign that holds, in Dn, the lord of the nth house of the rasi chart. For D4 it is the sign holding the 4th lord of the rasi chart (or the 7th from it, whichever is stronger).
• In Example Chart 2 the rasi lagna is Sagittarius. The 4th lord is Jupiter. Jupiter is in Capricorn in D4, so the dasha starts from Capricorn. Capricorn was stronger than its 7th.
• From Capricorn the dashas would normally run backwards. Saturn is in Capricorn, so the Saturn exception applied and the software ran them forward. That put 1991 in Gemini dasha, which showed the house only vaguely.

The Corner Case

• Saturn is in his own sign but retrograde.
• Jupiter is with him: debilitated with neecha bhanga, and retrograde — "as though he is exalted." Jupiter is very strong.
• The teacher asks whether the Saturn exception might then not apply. He turns it off. The dashas run backwards and 1991 falls in Leo dasha, which fits much better (Part 4).

"When Jupiter says, no, you don't have to go forward, in this case you go backwards, Saturn says, okay, sir, I will listen to you."

• He offers this as a corner case the theory does not cover, not as a rule. In his experience, when he doubts whether an exception should apply and tries without it, things sometimes make much more sense.
