Pakistan Chart Analysis

The chart the teacher uses: August 14, 1947, midnight, IST (5h30m east), Karachi (67°E03', 24°N52').

Why this moment

• Pakistan and India had the same time zone then.
• Pakistan chose to become a state on August 14. India waited until the midnight between the 14th and the 15th. The charts are about 24 hours apart.
• Some take 9:00 or 9:30 on the morning of the 14th, when the celebrations were held. Officially the state came into existence at midnight.
• Karachi was the centre before Islamabad became the capital, and the celebrations were there.
• The charts of India and Pakistan are well studied and reasonable. For the US the teacher is not fully convinced by any chart, because none explains all the past events.

Rāśi chart

• Lagna: Aries. Moon: Gemini, in Ardra.
• Mars with Moon in the 3rd (Gemini). Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn in the 4th (Cancer). Jupiter in the 7th (Libra). Rahu in the 2nd (Taurus), Ketu in the 8th (Scorpio).
• The rāśi chart shows the physical existence of the country as a whole.

Navāṁśa = international relations

In a mundane chart the navāṁśa shows interactions with other countries, foreign relations, the international dharma.

• Navāṁśa lagna: Libra.
• Jupiter in the 8th (Taurus). Venus and Saturn in the 4th (Capricorn). Rahu in the 5th (Aquarius). Sun and Moon in the 6th (Pisces). Mars in the 3rd, Mercury in lagna.

Jupiter Mahadasha — Viparita Raja Yoga (navāṁśa)

• In the navāṁśa Jupiter is the 3rd and 6th lord, a great functional malefic, placed in the 8th house → Viparita Raja Yoga, the reversal Raja Yoga.
• "From rags to riches kind of yoga… going from one extreme to the other extreme."
• Such a daśā starts on a negative note. The reversal can be sudden: normal Raja Yogas can come slowly, Viparita Raja Yogas reverse fortune suddenly.

What happened:

• For a while in this daśā Pakistan's economy was in shambles and its foreign relations poor.
• Relations with the US were sinking through the 1990s. After Musharraf took power in a coup they plummeted; Pakistan was suspended from the Commonwealth.
• After September 11 heavy pressure was put on Musharraf, and he chose to help the US. Pakistan became the number one ally in the war on terrorism, is getting the weapons it wants, and its relations with many countries, even India, are improving.

A student's question: a Mālikā Yoga in the navāṁśa?

• A chain of planets in consecutive houses should ideally cover 5 houses; 4 can be accepted.
• Rahu or Ketu cannot be the only planet in one of the houses of the chain. Here Rahu stands alone in his house, so there is no Mālikā Yoga.

Ketu Antardasha (to August 2001)

Read for the country overall, from the rāśi chart.

• Ketu is a malefic in the 8th house, but in Scorpio, his own house. Being in own house makes the result straightforward; being in the 8th still gives sudden changes and troubles.
• The classical result of Ketu in the 8th is an undiagnosable disease — something that eats the body like a pest while the cause cannot be found. Ketu is Dhumaketu, fire and smoke; he burns wherever he sits so that there is moksha.
• In another sign the result would be terrible. In Scorpio it is contained. But Scorpio is not completely his house: Mars is the stronger 8th lord. So the trouble comes, but it does not burn the country away.
• Pakistan was infested with terrorism in this period.

Rahu and Ketu in terrorism:

• Rahu = the bosses, planners, think tanks — Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
• Ketu = the executors. Ketu is headless: these people do not apply their head, they carry out instructions — Mohamed Atta and the like.
• If the 8th or 12th house or the bādhaka sthāna of a nation is activated in a daśā or antardaśā and Ketu is involved, terrorism is one possible cause.
• Ketu also shows religious fanatics who blast temples or mosques — a headless activity.
• On the positive side Ketu shows those who give up their ego and take the path of moksha.

Venus Antardasha (navāṁśa)

• A student objects that there is deception. The teacher: Rahu shows deception, and Rahu is strong in the 5th house of the navāṁśa. Clever manoeuvring in foreign relations is not ruled out. That does not change the reading of Venus.
• Venus is the lagna lord of the navāṁśa. Lagna = a fresh beginning, solving the problem and starting anew — here, in foreign relations.
• Venus joins Saturn. For Libra lagna Saturn is the Yogakaraka, lord of the 4th and 5th — a quadrant and a trine. With the lagna lord this makes a couple of Raja Yogas.
• A Saturn–Venus yoga is always excellent for Taurus and Libra lagnas, and most auspicious for Capricorn and Aquarius too.
• They are friends. A Raja Yoga between friends is much better than one between enemies.
• Venus is also the dispositor of Jupiter, so he can trigger Jupiter's Viparita Raja Yoga.
• AL of the navāṁśa is with Venus. AL shows image. This is the period when Pakistan gets a new image.

Bhoga of the antardaśā:

• Venus is 9th from Jupiter. The 9th from Venus is Virgo — the bhoga, what is experienced.
• Virgo is the 12th house from the navāṁśa lagna, and it holds A8 (sudden developments).
• The 12th is the house of relief. The 4th starts the moksha trikona and the 12th ends it: "now everything is resolved". Shackling and the removal of shackles are both the 12th — which is why it is the house of imprisonment, mental imprisonment included.
• The 12th also shows giving up something, making compromises.
• So: sudden developments, some compromises by Pakistan, and relief. Jupiter–Venus was a very beneficial antardaśā.

Moon Antardasha — navāṁśa

• Bhoga: Moon is 11th from Jupiter; the 11th from Moon is Capricorn, the 4th house — sukha. In foreign relations that means more satisfactory, more peaceful relations. In both Sun and Moon antardaśās Pakistan will seem to be making peace with other countries.
• Dispositor: Moon is in Jupiter's sign, but Jupiter is not in Moon's sign, so there is no exchange with Jupiter. A dispositor still has control — like a landlord or a boss who asks you for tickets to a show you are organising: you have to manage it. The dispositor can push his agenda in your daśā.
• Conjunction with Sun: Moon and Sun are together in Pisces in the 6th. Moon gives Sun's results, and Sun gives Moon's.
• Sun is the 11th lord. Libra is a movable sign, so the 11th is the bādhaka sthāna. Sun is the bādhaka lord in the 6th.

The bādhaka lord by house:

• A student calls the bādhaka lord in the 6th good. It is not.
• The bādhaka lord is auspicious only in the 12th, the house of giving up: the one whose job is to nag you is put in charge of compromise and cannot trouble you much.
• In any other house he troubles you. The 6th is one of the worst.
• The 6th is the seen enemy. The bādhaka is the unseen enemy — you cannot perceive him.
• The 6th gives troubles and also the energy to overcome them. A bādhaka lord placed there follows his own agenda: he gives the trouble and may take away the ability to fight.

Moon's own promise:

• Moon is the 10th lord — karma in the world, here in foreign relations.
• He is the natural kāraka of peace, in a peaceful sign, Pisces, owned by Jupiter.
• Given the two resources of the 6th, he uses the one that suits his agenda: he gives the energy to overcome existing troubles rather than new big ones.

"The lordship shows the agenda. The planet cannot forget it unless he is forced to… And the placement shows the resources at his command."

• If the sign were Aries, Mars as house lord would tell Moon to give some troubles too. Lordship, house occupied, the nature of the planet, the nature of the sign and the dispositor must all be weighed.

Net result: what Moon promises (obstacles overcome, something achieved abroad) is delivered by Sun. What Sun promises (worry, tension) is delivered in Moon's antardaśā. Sun as a troublemaker shows trouble from kings and bosses; for a country, pressure from "the big boys" — the US, the UK. The coming year and few months will not be smooth: authoritative countries will press Pakistan to change, whether or not it reaches the media. Pisces being Jupiter's sign, it will not be very bad.

Moon Antardasha — rāśi chart

• Moon and Mars are together in the 3rd, so Moon gives Mars's results.
• Mars is the lagna lord — the planet who cares most for the well-being and existence of the native.
• The 3rd, the house of initiative, is one of the few good houses for Mars. The other favourable houses for him are the 6th and the 11th.
• Result: be bold, perhaps a new beginning, and aggressively safeguard the well-being of the country. Moon and Mars also form a Raja Yoga.
• Someone had predicted years earlier that Pakistan would break up or join India in 2005–2006. This antardaśā does not show it.

Rahu Antardasha (2007–2008) — rāśi chart

• Rahu is the 11th lord. Aries is a movable sign, so the 11th is the bādhaka sthāna. Rahu is the bādhaka lord.
• He sits in the 2nd house, the house of resources and food. The bādhaka's agenda is trouble that cannot be diagnosed or cured. "Keep him fed well. What will he do? He will feed you poison."
• There is a principle that Rahu in the 2nd shows death by poison. The 2nd is also a house of death.
• So Rahu shows some poisoning of the country. Even if Pakistan stems internal terrorism, big problems can come in Rahu's antardaśā.
• Irrespective of placement, Rahu's antardaśā in Jupiter's daśā (or the reverse) brings friction. Jupiter is discretion and wisdom; Rahu is foolishness, deceit, illusion. They pull apart.

Ārūḍhas with Rahu:

• Hostility is in the mind — intangible. A war is tangible, and tangible things are seen from ārūḍha padas.
• A6 shows tangible fighting, confrontation with other nations or entities. A6 is with Rahu.
• UL is the manifestation of the 12th: tangible loss. UL is also there.
• When A6 and UL are together in a nation's chart, it usually loses when it fights. Better not to fight.
• This is a gross rule. Two ārūḍhas in one sign tend to go together but need not: a planet influencing the sign picks the ārūḍha that suits his own agenda. Annual charts can also modify it.

Prediction: 2007–2008 is not an auspicious period for Pakistan. A small chance of another confrontation like Kargil. India should be very diplomatic, and the world's statesmen should keep a tab on Pakistan.

India's Chart Analysis

The chart: August 15, 1947, midnight, IST, New Delhi.

Why India waited a day

• India did not take independence the day it was available. On the 14th Moon was in Ardra.
• Ardra's lord is Rahu only in Vimshottari; other daśās give it other lords. The deity is the true ruler, and the deity of Ardra is Rudra.
• Rudra is the fiery form of Shiva. The Rudras are the fire that keeps body, life and soul together. Death comes not when Rudra arrives but when Rudra leaves; while the Rudras are intact Yama does not come near. Worship of the Rudras (Rudram, Chamakam) keeps them with you.
• The Pancha Loka Palakas, invoked first in the Satyanarayana vratam: Ganesha, Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and Gauri. They rule the five bhūtas. Brahma rules air — air is expansion, and creation is an expansion. Vishnu rules ether (ākāśa): all-pervading and unseen. Rudra rules fire (agni), the inner fire included.
• Was the time chosen astrologically? Nehru would never have accepted it publicly. Dr. B.V. Raman and others have said astrologers were consulted. The astrologers themselves were divided, and an odd time such as 9:57 would not fit Nehru's secular image. Midnight was acceptable. "It's not really the greatest muhurta", but the best within the constraint.

Rāśi chart

• Lagna: Taurus.
• Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Saturn in Cancer, the 3rd house. Mars in Gemini (2nd), Jupiter in Libra (6th), Rahu in lagna, Ketu in the 7th.
• All five planets in Cancer are in the 11th from Arudha Lagna.
• Navāṁśa lagna Pisces; Venus and Saturn fall in the 11th there.

Which Vimshottari

Students counting planets around Moon and Lagna get different numbers. The teacher notes that Moon is at one end of its sign and Lagna at the other end of its sign, which changes the pada-based count, and takes Lagna Vimshottari. By it India has been in Saturn Mahadasha since 1999, with Saturn–Venus running in 2007.

Whose results Saturn gives

Five planets are together. Arrange them by beneficence and the ends exchange results.

• Order: Venus → Mercury → Moon → Sun → Saturn.
• Venus is the only benefic.
• Moon is Krishna Trayodashi — not a benefic at all, a full malefic.
• Mercury is with Venus but also with several malefics: a mixed malefic. A mixed planet ranks above a pure malefic, so Mercury comes before Moon. (Had Moon been full, Moon would rank above Mercury.)
• Venus and Saturn exchange results. Mercury and Sun exchange results. Moon gives the residual results.

When there is also an exchange of signs

From the published class notes; this part is not on the recording.

• A planet's daśā results change when other planets are with the daśā or antardaśā lord, or when it is in parivartana (exchange of signs) with another planet.
• Apply the parivartana first, then the benefic-to-malefic order among the planets that are together.
• Example: Moon and Saturn in Pisces in the 6th, Jupiter in Cancer in the 10th. Moon and Jupiter are in parivartana. Moon's daśā gives Saturn's results, Saturn's daśā gives Jupiter's results, Jupiter's daśā gives Moon's results.
• Without Saturn in Pisces it is a plain exchange: Jupiter's daśā gives Moon's results and Moon's daśā gives Jupiter's.

Saturn Mahadasha

• Saturn gives Venus's results. Venus is the lagna lord (and 6th lord) → new beginnings.
• Venus is in the 11th from Arudha Lagna → tangible gains. A bad planet there may suppress gains; the lagna lord gives them.
• "Since 1999, it is a very good period for India."

Venus Antardasha

• Venus gives Saturn's results.
• Saturn is a malefic in the 3rd house: India will be bold and aggressive, not mild.
• Saturn is the Yogakaraka for Taurus lagna.
• Saturn lords the sign holding A6 and A7 (Capricorn) — see below. A confrontation is possible in this antardaśā.
• Both charts point the same way: Pakistan runs Rahu, India runs Saturn–Venus. "2007–2008, there should be some concern." But Pakistan's Rahu is a bādhaka lord in a house of death, while India's Saturn is a Yogakaraka.

The Saturn–Venus Raja Yoga

• Venus at 22°34' Cancer, Saturn at 20°28' Cancer — within about 2°. A very powerful Raja Yoga of lagna lord and Yogakaraka.
• It is activated in Venus–Saturn or Saturn–Venus.

"During 2006–2009, there is some danger of a confrontation, but at the same time, this is the period when India's Raj Yoga will be activated."

• The rise of India seen so far is a prelude to a bigger Raja Yoga, likely during 2008–2009.

A6 and A7 together

• A6 = tangible confrontation: the starting of a war, the conducting of it, the end of it. It need not be a physical war (that needs Mars); it can be a verbal confrontation.
• A7 = tangible diplomacy, dealings with other countries.
• Both are in Capricorn. Confrontation and diplomacy go together for India: it uses diplomacy to avoid a war, and during a war it does a lot of diplomacy so that other countries do not intervene.

How a planet is tied to a house or an ārūḍha

A student asks why A6 and A7 are being read for Saturn. Lordship, placement and aspect all give results, each in its own way:

• Desire alone does not deliver. The house lord is the people manager and the kāraka is the project manager. A planet with graha dṛṣṭi and a good relation with either the lord or the kāraka can get onto the "project".
• Here every planet in Cancer has graha dṛṣṭi on Capricorn. Many planets want to give India wars, and many want to give diplomacy. Saturn alone is also the lord, so Saturn's daśā can give a confrontation.

Ārūḍhas of Venus — the Raja Yoga at the tangible level

Ārūḍhas show tangible things: GDP growing 10%, unemployment falling 3%, a war won, Pakistan submitting to India's demands in the Shimla Agreement. A "new beginning" is intangible.

• A5 (in Taurus) = formal, tangible recognition of abilities. In a person: awards and trophies. For India: something like a Security Council seat, or the world's magazines writing of India as an upcoming country the way they write of China.
• A11 (in Taurus) = tangible gains, fulfilment of deep desires.
• A9 (in Libra) = Bhagya pada, tangible fortune.
• Venus lords all three. Saturn lords A6 and A7.

Principle: 9th lord and 10th lord together is a Raja Yoga. In the same way, A9 and A10 in one sign, or their lords together, is very auspicious — an indirect Raja Yoga mentioned in some classics (not all classics use ārūḍhas).

• Here the A7 lord joins the lord of A5, A9 and A11. So the Saturn–Venus Raja Yoga works at the tangible level as well as the intangible.
• Some Raja Yogas fructify only in the intangible domain and the world does not see them. This one fructifies at both levels.

Annual TP Chart for Pakistan 2001

The Tithi Praveśa chart of 2001, the year of the big change. It falls on August 16, 2001.

The chart

• Annual lagna: Scorpio.
• Hora Lord (ruler of the year): Mars, placed in lagna.
• 8th house (Gemini): Moon, Jupiter, Rahu, Venus.
• Saturn in the 7th, Sun in the 9th, Mercury in the 10th, Ketu in the 2nd.

Positives first: Mars in lagna

• Lagna = new beginning. Mars in lagna = bold new beginning.
• Mars can show Pervez Musharraf: a military leader fully in control of the country that year, making a new start.
• A student notes Mars is also the 6th lord. For Scorpio lagna Mars in lagna is still very auspicious; it shows great determination. It will not come smoothly — he acts as 6th lord too — but placed in lagna he looks after lagna first.
• The teacher's analogy: with one house in the town where he lives and another in Florida, he cares about both, but his actions go to the house he lives in.

The 8th house

The 8th is very important in mundane charts: sudden changes, tension, unease in the country.

• Moon in the 8th is in Marana Karaka Sthana. Moon is the mood of the country. Ashtama Chandra is terrible: people depressed, unhappy, angry.
• Jupiter with Rahu — Guru Chandala Yoga. Rahu is not too close to Moon but is close to Jupiter. Jupiter is the 5th lord, and he is destroyed in the 8th. Wisdom is eclipsed; tension and confusion.
• Venus with Rahu — wisdom blocked by intrigue-diplomacy, a get-something-done attitude.
• The teacher of the demons and the teacher of the gods sit together with Rahu.
• A year of much pain and unease, and at the same time a bold new beginning. Both factors play out.

Annual lagna from natal lagna

The link between the natal chart and the annual chart: see which house the annual lagna is from the natal lagna. It shows the karmic influences triggered that year and supplements what the Hora Lord shows.

• Natal lagna Aries, annual lagna Scorpio → the 8th.

"If the annual lagna is in the 8th house from natal lagna, it shows that year will be a year of pain, suffering, paying for your sins basically. On the other hand, if it is in the 9th house, it shows reaping the good things that you did."

The Hora Lord's graha dṛṣṭi

• Mars in Scorpio has graha dṛṣṭi (his 8th aspect) on Gemini.
• When the ruler of the year has graha dṛṣṭi on planets, he can keep them in check — "under a tab".
• Because lagna and the Hora Lord are so strong, the country will not break and nothing untoward will happen. Amid much trouble a bold new beginning is made.

What happened

• Pakistan was given a choice: be with the US and go against the Taliban, or face its wrath.
• A very tough trial — the Pakistani army had supported the Taliban and terrorists were everywhere.
• Musharraf made the bold move. Many did not expect him to survive it.

No Raja Yoga in this year

A student asks about Viparita Raja Yoga in this chart; it does not qualify (see the software caution section). This year shows no Raja Yoga: Pakistan is pushed into a corner and complies. The Raja Yoga came in the following years because of what was done in this one — arrests of important men, continued US pressure, then US trust, and now the F-16s. An annual chart shows only what is in store for that year: here compromise, pain, and taking it boldly.

Kala Sarpa vs. Kala Amrita Yoga

In both the Pakistan and the India chart all planets lie between Rahu and Ketu.

The two yogas

• Kala Sarpa Yoga: the planets start from Ketu and go up to Rahu — Rahu is leading. Over time it becomes poison. It may start as amrita, but the person accumulates terrible karma unless there are relieving factors (such as a planet in exaltation).
• Kala Amrita Yoga: Rahu is earlier and Ketu is leading. Over time it becomes amrita.
• Both India and Pakistan have Kala Amrita Yoga.

How seriously to take it

• The yoga is not mentioned in any classic, though it is much dreaded.
• It usually does not hurt at 20 or 30. It fructifies in the 40s, and then makes big changes in life.
• It is not something to worry about; many other conditions matter. No blanket statement can be made.
• Names by the sign Rahu occupies (Vasuki, Karkotaka, Adishesha…) are possible. It is the same yoga.

Astrologers who exploit it

• Some call it "Maha Kala Sarpa Yoga" to frighten people. The teacher knows of no such distinction.
• His example: a man learned in mantra shastra, who himself conducts homas and yajnas, was told his daughter had Maha Kala Sarpa Yoga and that the remedies had to be done only by the astrologer's own priest.
• Such astrologers know a few terms — Kala Sarpa, Sade Sati — and look only for those. People in trouble come to astrologers, and they are exploited. Fees have risen with the new-economy salaries; gem traders tie up with astrologers on television.

"If we are greedy and if we do bad karma for the greed, the karma that we incur is much worse than anybody else. Compared to a doctor who may cheat, an astrologer who cheats, he will really incur heavy karma."

• No karma is escaped — if not in this life, the next, or the one after.
• Help people with astrology when you have time. Taking money for it the teacher does not think a good idea, though it may be acceptable. At least do not cheat.

Viparita Raj Yoga — Software Caution

A student asks whether the 2001 annual chart of Pakistan has a Viparita Raja Yoga: the 12th lord (Venus) is in the 8th.

• The 12th lord in the 8th alone, or with another dusthana lord, is Viparita Raja Yoga.
• The 12th lord in the 8th with trine and quadrant lords is not. Here Venus is with Jupiter (5th lord) and Moon (9th lord).
• The software reports it because it is a very partial yoga. The software flags any dusthana lord in a dusthana, or two dusthana lords together.
• Even two dusthana lords together are not good in every house. Together in a dusthana, good. Together in a trine, it may not be good.

"You have to take the yogas given by the software with a pinch of salt. You have to judge."

So there is no proper Viparita Raja Yoga in the 2001 chart. The reversal for Pakistan came in the years after.
