Planetary Combinations for Mutual Aspects

Mutual Placement

A student asks whether a 4th/10th placement, such as Saturn and Mars now, can cause something bad.

• The exception in quadrants: two planets at loggerheads.
• Mars and Saturn in 4th/10th — Saturn in the 4th from Mars, each aspecting the other by graha dṛṣṭi — is dangerous.
  • Mars: aggression, fight. "Why suffer? Give the suffering back to somebody else."
  • Saturn: patience. If necessary, struggle, suffer and get it over with.
  • Mars is red, Saturn is blue: the red boxer and the blue boxer.

Partial Aspects (Parashara)

• All planets aspect the 7th in full.
• In full, in addition: Mars the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th.
• Going strictly by Parashara, all planets have these special aspects, only not in full:
  • 4th and 8th — three-quarters (the teacher: "I may be getting it reversed")
  • 5th and 9th — half ("that I know for sure")
  • 3rd and 10th — one quarter
• Mars in Aries aspects Leo with a half aspect; Jupiter in Aries aspects Leo in full.

Trines Are Blessings, Quadrants Are Work

• Planets in trine promote each other by placement, not by aspect.
• Quadrants are Vishnu sthānas, trines are Lakshmi sthānas.
  • Vishnu: work, your contribution to society. Quadrants show the activities that have to happen.
  • Lakshmi: the fruit of previous good work. Trines are what is given.
• Trines from any house are the blessings of that house. The same for a planet: the trines from it make it shine.
  • 10th house (karma): its trines are the 2nd (resources — money, family, friends, connections) and the 6th (overcoming opposition, the struggle you put in). Both make the work happen.
  • 11th house (gains, fulfilment of desire): its trines are the 3rd and 7th. Without initiative there is no fulfilment — there are no desires.

1. 3rd house — the start of desire: initiative. "I want to do this."
2. 7th house — nurturing and pursuing the desire.
3. 11th house — fulfilment. You get what you wanted.

Moksha Trikona

A student asks how the 4th and 12th can bless the 8th when the 8th is a bad house.

• Bad and good are relative. The 8th is sudden changes and suffering — and hard work. It is the house of sādhana, the tapas sthāna.
• 4th — happiness and comfort. Unhappy and restless, you cannot work hard. Comfort is a blessing for tapas.
• 12th — expense, giving up, letting go, detachment. Moksha is only its final stage. If you do not let things go you are forced to lose them, so loss is also the 12th. Detachment is necessary for tapas.

"Doing tapas, being detached, having comfort — all these go together. They bless each other. They promote each other."

Eclipse Charts for Prediction

Rules

• When suffering follows close on an eclipse, the eclipse may have been its harbinger. Cast a chart for the eclipse at the capital of the country.
• It can be cast for the start or for the peak. From the teacher's own research, the start matters more than the peak. The Rasi chart is usually the same for both.
• Whatever an eclipse brings comes within three months.
• No daśā is given for an eclipse chart. Only the chart is read.
• Read houses only. The teacher ignores ārūḍhas in eclipse charts — he does not know what they mean there.
• 1st and 8th houses: unrest, suffering, disasters in the following months.
• Eclipses bring all kinds of events, not only natural disasters.
• Other charts can confirm: the country's annual chart, its Lunar New Year chart (Chaitra Shukla Pratipat).
• Lunar or solar New Year chart? Mass suffering concerns the mind of the people — Moon — so the lunar chart. Power struggles go with Sun — the solar New Year chart.

Solar Eclipse, Islamabad, October 2005 — The Earthquake

• Solar eclipse at maximum: October 3, 2005, 4:10 PM, Islamabad. (The software's "start" option had a bug for this eclipse, so the maximum was used.)
• Aquarius lagna for the Pakistan–Kashmir–Afghanistan region. Elsewhere the same eclipse gave other lagnas.
• The 8th house dominates.
  • Moon in the 8th: maraṇa kāraka sthāna for Moon.
  • 7th lord Sun and 8th lord Mercury together in the 8th. In a natal or annual chart, 7th and 8th lords together in the 7th or 8th means death or death-like suffering in that year: the 8th gives life, the 7th cuts it.
  • Ketu there: sudden, unexpected, explosive events.
• The 8th is Virgo. Aries and its trines are agni rāśis; Taurus and its trines are bhū rāśis. Earth sign: landslides, earthquakes.

Lunar Eclipse, Delhi, October 2005

• Start of the partial lunar eclipse: October 17, 2005, 5:03:21 PM IST, New Delhi. Pisces lagna.
• Sun at the very beginning of Libra, Moon at 29°53' Pisces — in adjacent signs to the eye, but opposite by longitude.
• Three bad things:
  1. Moon in lagna in deep gaṇḍānta.
     • Gaṇḍānta = the border between water and fire: Pisces/Aries, Cancer/Leo, Scorpio/Sagittarius.
     • The classics define it by navāṁśa: the last 3°20' of the water sign and the first 3°20' of the fire sign.
     • From experience, the last degree and the first degree are the dangerous part. Degree comes from Trimsamsa; that is why the degree matters for bad things.
     • Moon has 7' left in Pisces and changes sign 11 minutes of time later. A planet in that state is like a man so irritated that he throws the computer at you when you ask to borrow it.
     • Rahu afflicts Moon from about 10° — the saving grace; closer would have been worse.
     • Moon is the mind of the people: unhappy, restless for the next couple of months.
  2. Lagna lord Jupiter in the 8th (Libra), with 6th lord Sun and Mercury — bādhaka lord and 7th lord in the 8th, a maraka. Libra is a vāyu rāśi: an air disaster is also possible.
  3. Rahu on the lagna: lagna at 15°, Rahu at 19°, about 3.5° apart. Rahu is sitting on the head. Rahu-Ketu problems — terrorism.
• Moon in gaṇḍānta with Rahu: watery problems as well.

Lunar Eclipse, India, May 2004 — The Election

• Lunar eclipse began May 5, 2004, 12:18 AM, visible in India. Elections followed within days and Vajpayee lost.
• Rule:
  • 10th house = the ruling party, the executive wing.
  • 3rd house = the opposition — the 6th from the 10th, the enemy of the executive.
  • Whichever house or lord is afflicted in the eclipse chart suffers in an election held soon after.
• Both luminaries are eclipsed in this chart: Sun is with Rahu, Moon with Ketu.
• Here Moon is in the 10th with Ketu, Gulika and Mandi. The 3rd house and 3rd lord were fine. A bad time for the king. Had they looked at the eclipse they would probably not have gone to the polls then.
• A student: Sun is the kāraka for the ruler. Give that very low weight. Sun rules the whole political class, not only the ruler; otherwise every solar eclipse would unseat the government.

Lunar Eclipse, Washington D.C., October 2004 — The Election

• Eclipse began October 27, 2004, 8:14:12 PM Eastern Standard Time, Washington, D.C. Election on November 2, six days later.
• Gemini lagna. 10th house Pisces: not afflicted; only Mars aspects it. 10th lord Jupiter is in a quadrant (the 4th), aspecting the 10th, with Venus — 10th and 5th lords together, a rāja yoga. Mars is there too, so some undesirable factors, but overall quite positive.
• 3rd house Leo: empty, unafflicted. But the 3rd lord — the intelligence conducting the opposition — is Sun, debilitated, with Ketu a little over 3° away. Anything under 7–8° is close.
  • Sun is in the sign of Venus, no friend of his. Venus is Ketu's friend, so Ketu is the strong one in this fight.
• Republicans were the ruling party. A rout of the opposition — presidency, Senate and House.
• Every eclipse afflicts Sun and Moon. What matters is which houses they own and occupy in that chart. Here Sun owns the 3rd and sits in the 5th.
• The teacher was predicting Bush when others, his guru included, were predicting Kerry. The two men's charts were one reason; this eclipse chart was another strong one.

Who Suffers in an Eclipse

• Sun with Rahu or Ketu: nobody wins, both are destroyed. Sun's heat burns Ketu, but Ketu does not mind; he takes a sadistic pleasure in covering Sun.
• Moon with the nodes: it is poor Moon who suffers. Moon is mind, Rahu-Ketu are deception. Deception covers the mind and the light of the soul cannot reach it.
• The soul itself does not care. In a solar eclipse it is Jupiter who is most unhappy:

"Soul gives its wisdom through the mind, through your intelligence. So Jupiter is the agent between Sun and Moon."

Bush Annual Charts (2004 vs. 2005)

The Question

A student asks about Bush's popularity: 41%, and it had dipped into the 30s. The teacher reads the Dasamsa of the annual Tithi Pravesha chart — we know Bush through his work as President, not through his Rasi. The year runs to his next tithi return in July 2006.

2005–06 Annual Chart

• Hora Lord: Mercury. Keep it at the back of the mind. (The published class notes give Sun and call the Mercury of the recording a slip; the chart cast for this tithi return gives Mercury.)
• Tithi Ashtottari daśā running at the time of the class: Moon. Shukla Ashtami Moon — a benefic Moon.
• Arudha Lagna in Leo, with Mars. Image for the year: a tāmasic warrior, extremely aggressive.
  • You would expect a man facing this opposition to turn introspective and take back some steps. With Mars in AL he will not. He will be bold and do what he wants.
• AL is in the 9th house. In the 8th there would be a fall. In the 9th: no big change in status, whatever the ratings.
• A9 is with A8 (in the 11th, Libra).
  • A9 = Bhagyapada, the tangible event that makes you call a man lucky. His natal chart is very fortunate: when things look down, something happens that lifts him.
  • A10 or A9 with A8 is not favourable. Fortune deserts him somewhat this year.

"Bad things will be happening at bad times. Earlier, good things were happening at bad times."

• A student: A8 can also be good, sudden reversals. How to tell? See the strength of the 8th house. If the 8th shows sudden luck, A8 is that; if it shows setback, A8 is setback.
  • Rahu is in the 8th. Malefics are good in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. In the 8th, Saturn or Rahu is terrible: Rahu or Ketu there brings sudden bad events. In a natal chart it means constant struggle through life.
  • So the 8th is weak and A8 means sudden setbacks, eating into his fortune.
  • 8th lord Moon sits right in A8/A9, with lagna lord Jupiter and Mercury.
• A5 is in lagna with A11. Following is decent for the year. Jupiter, lord of that ārūḍha, is in the 11th from it and has argala on it.
• The trouble is daśā-wise, counted from A5:
  • Venus is the 6th lord from A5 — bad. Venus Dasha: August–September. Popularity fell.
  • Moon is the 8th lord from A5 — terrible for following. Moon Dasha: October 20 to December 8.
  • Mars is in the 9th from A5. In Mars Dasha, from December, tough talk and tough acts lift the numbers again; something good around Christmas.

"If you want Bush's numbers to come down to 35 or 30, I am sorry — I think this is just a two-month thing, not a whole-year thing."

2004–05 Annual Chart, for Comparison

• D-10: Venus, the 5th lord, in lagna; lagna lord Mercury in the 7th. 1st and 5th lords aspect each other — a rāja yoga, good for following.
• A9 is with the lagna lord in a quadrant (the 7th), together with A4.
  • A4 = the relief of "thank God, it went my way."
  • Things go his way and make him a happy man — and this sits right on the rāja yoga axis. A lucky year.
• A5 is in Aquarius with Jupiter and Ketu. The followers: religious, dharmic, pious people; with Ketu, also headless, eccentric ones — and spiritual ones. The sign colours their nature: Aquarius is Saturn's sign — philosophical, long-term, conservative, worried. Religious conservatives who fear the end of their religion unless they act. The same pair in Pisces would be relaxed.
• A6 is with A5. A6 = tangible opposition. A tug-of-war: some followers start hating him, some opponents come over. A borderline year for following.
• A10 is in the 8th house: something about the kingdom hangs in the balance. Good or bad depends on the 8th.
  • Saturn is in the 8th in own house — 8th lord in the 8th is Sarala Yoga. Saturn always makes you work hard, but you succeed.
  • To keep the kingdom he has to work very hard. No cakewalk, but it happens.
• When he became President again he was running the daśā of Mercury, who takes part in the rāja yoga and sits with A9 and A4.

Ārūḍha Rules Used

• An ārūḍha in a quadrant gives its results with some effort.
• In a trine it gives them automatically.
• In a dusthāna (6, 8, 12) its results are hard to get or come in a negative way.

Fortune, Popularity, Work

• A5 — popularity: how capable people think you are. The poll numbers are a tangible measure of A5.
• A9 — luck: when things are close, how often they go your way.
• A10 — the tangible work: whether you go to your meetings or relax on the ranch; the opportunity to get work done. It does not measure popularity.
• Katrina: the levees were not expected to break. His numbers went into the 30s at once. With another President the same storm may have given the same result. He was unlucky — that is A9.
• A student: can the chart show whether someone acted deliberately? Not from Bush's chart. For him it is an accident either way, the result of his A9 being damaged. The annual chart of the town itself might show it.

• Study Bush's 2006 annual chart (July 2006 to July 2007): what is he likely to do, and how is his popularity? Note that A5 is in the 8th — and judge whether the 8th is strong or weak. Also how the Republican Party does in the 2006 Senate and House elections.
