Rahu vs. Saturn as Stronger Lord — The Determination Rules

Aquarius has two lords. In this D-10 (Libra lagna) Saturn is in Taurus with Venus and Rāhu is in Pisces with Mars. Which one is the lord for the Aquarius daśā?

Rule sequence:

1. Number of planets conjoined: Saturn has one (Venus), Rāhu has one (Mars). Tie.
2. Association with Jupiter, Mercury and the dispositor:
   • Saturn: his dispositor Venus is with him and Mercury aspects him from Libra by rāśi dṛṣṭi. Count 2.
   • Rāhu: Jupiter aspects him from Virgo by rāśi dṛṣṭi. Jupiter counts once as Jupiter and once as the dispositor. Count 2.
   • Tie.
3. Exaltation / debilitation: neither. Parāśara mentions only exaltation and debilitation here — own sign is not in the rule.
4. Odd sign vs. even sign: both are in even signs. No help.
5. Movable < fixed < dual:
   • Saturn is in Taurus, a fixed sign.
   • Rāhu is in Pisces, a dual sign.
   • Rāhu is stronger.
6. If still tied: for Narayana or Chara Daśā take the planet that gives more daśā years. (Comparing longitudes is the tie-breaker for finding ārūḍhas, not for daśās.)

"Movable signs are the weakest, fixed signs are stronger, dual signs are even stronger… Rāhu is in a dual sign, so he wins."

Rāhu's slot: Pisces is Ubhayodaya → the lord takes the first available part. Aquarius, Śīrṣodaya, has taken the first third, so Rāhu takes the middle third.

How D-n Narayana Daśā Is Found

• Take the lord of the n-th house of the rāśi chart. See which sign he occupies in D-n. Treat that sign as lagna, treat D-n as if it were a rāśi chart, take the stronger of that sign and its 7th, and apply the ordinary Narayana Daśā rules.
• Here the 10th lord of the rāśi chart is Moon. In D-10 he is in Libra, which is also the D-10 lagna. Libra is stronger than Aries, so the daśās start from Libra.
• Why: the D-10 is only the professional environment. Narayana is in the work done in that environment. The 10th house is the work; the 10th lord is the intelligence behind the work. The daśā shows how that intelligence is acted on by the environment from time to time.

"Narayana is not in the environment. He is in the work you do in that environment."

The D-10

Lagna Libra with Moon and Mercury. Sun in Aries (7th). Mars and Rāhu in Pisces (6th) with A3. Venus and Saturn in Taurus (8th). Jupiter and Ketu in Virgo (12th). Aquarius (5th) is empty and holds A9, A7 and A8. AL is in Sagittarius.

Aquarius Daśā — the Three Parts

• Aquarius is Śīrṣodaya → the sign takes the first third.
• Lord Rāhu (Part 5) in Ubhayodaya Pisces → middle third.
• No occupants. Sun (Aries), Moon and Mercury (Libra) aspect Aquarius by rāśi dṛṣṭi → last third.

1st Third: Aquarius Itself

She was not working when the daśā began.

• Aquarius is the 5th house — recognition of abilities and being given a chance. This is the house for getting a job offer.
• From AL it is the 3rd house. Judge a sign in the 3rd or 6th from AL by whether the sign is malefic or benefic — the easy test is its lord. Aquarius is Saturn's sign: a malefic sign in the 3rd from AL is good for material success.
• It holds A9 (Bhāgyapada) — fortune blooming; A7 (Dārapada) — new associates, new colleagues; A8 (Mṛtyupada) — danger, a break.
• What happened: she started working, worked about a couple of years, and was then laid off.

The rule on the 3rd and 6th from AL:

• Malefics in the 3rd and 6th from Ārūḍha Lagna are excellent for material prosperity and terrible for spiritual progress: no compromise, desires, activity. A saint in such a period is seen as chasing material things.
• Benefics there are the reverse: bad materially — compromise and complacency — but good for a spiritual person.
• A student objected that Saturn is slow and cannot give initiative. Answer: he is slow, but Saturn in the 3rd or 6th from AL is very good.
• Example: with AL in Libra, Sagittarius daśā (a benefic sign in the 3rd from AL) is materially not so good.

2nd Third: Rāhu's 4 Quarters (Malefic: avasthā → yogas → owned → occupied)

Rāhu is the 5th lord in the 6th house of service, with Mars. Everything he gives is as lord of the 5th — putting her abilities to use. The lord of a house is the intelligence behind that house.

1. Avasthā (May 2003 – April 2004): Rāhu is in Jupiter's sign Pisces. Jupiter is his natural enemy, and in Virgo, the 7th from him, also a temporary enemy (only planets within three signs on either side are temporary friends). Compound relation: adhiśatru. The lord of recognition in his worst enemy's house does not give a job.

   • What happened: after the lay-off she did not get a job again in this period.

2. Yogas (April 2004 – March 2005): Rāhu (5th lord) with Mars (2nd and 7th lord) = trine lord with quadrant lord = Rāja Yoga. But what is Mars's agenda? Mars and Sun never show service; they show business and independent work. Being in the 6th, she works hard and deals with obstacles — yet wants to use her abilities in a business.

   • What happened: in 2004–05 she tried business with a couple of different people. She did not want a job and did not even type her résumé.
   • Count only the yogas Rāhu himself takes part in, not the yogas of planets that are with him.

3. Houses owned (March 2005 – February 2006): Rāhu as lord of the 5th, of Bhāgyapada and of Dārapada → recognition, a lucky break, in a job or in the partnership she is trying. He also owns Mṛtyupada, so it is not smooth: a break, anxiety, dropping one thing for another. The 5th house gave her a job earlier, so the 5th lord gives hope again. Prediction made in class: a favourable period, something may materialise.

4. House occupied (February 2006 – January 2007): the 6th house and A3. Either she finally gives up business and takes a job, or she stays in business, works hard and overcomes many obstacles. A3 = a contract job, a short venture, work with short travel, incorporating a company.

3rd Third: Sun, Moon and Mercury — 3 years 8 months = 44 months, about 15 months each

Order by longitude: Moon (29°, Ātmakāraka) → Sun (25°, Bhrātṛkāraka) → Mercury (7°, Jñātikāraka).

• Moon (January 2007 – April 2008): the results of Moon's aspect on Aquarius. Moon is the 10th lord (in rāśi and in D-10) and Mercury the 9th lord; they are together in lagna = Dharma-Karmādhipati Yoga. A Rāja Yoga in lagna or in a trine is especially powerful.
• Sun (April 2008 – July 2009): the 11th lord in the 7th house of business. His agenda is the fruits. Rāhu with Mars only brings hard work; the gains are promised by Sun, and they come from business.
• Mercury (from July 2009 to the end of the daśā): 9th lord, the other half of the Rāja Yoga. Good.
• A student added that Moon and Mercury are also tied to the Ghāṭī Lagna. Agreed: they are yogadas too.

"Overall, the last one-third will be the highlight of this whole daśā."

(At the time of the class the third quarter of Rāhu had just begun. Everything after it was prediction, not record.)

Aside: a Software Gap

A student noticed the Rāhu–Mars Rāja Yoga was not listed among the D-10 yogas. The yoga module took only the seven planets as sign lords, so yogas formed by Rāhu or Ketu as a quadrant or trine lord were not shown. He called it "an uncomfortable Rāja Yoga" and said he would fix the software.

Key Rules About Malefics in 6H from Lagna

A student asked: in Rāhu's last quarter, does she give up the business? Not necessarily — she may stay in it, working hard. That led to the rule.

From Lagna (not from AL)

• Rāhu in the 6th from lagna = plenty of obstacles to overcome, and overcoming them well.
• Jupiter in the 6th from lagna = no obstacles, and no overcoming either. You are happy, but nothing is pushing the success through.
• A malefic in the 6th makes sure you have obstacles and makes sure you overcome them.

"Malefic planets in the 6th house, they are good because they give you success. You have to work hard and you have to get that success, and you will get that success."

The Planet's Agenda Decides

The 6th house is both obstacles and overcoming them. Which one a planet delivers depends on the houses it owns.

• Rāhu as 5th lord in the 6th (this chart): his agenda is recognition and success. A malefic is comfortable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th. He makes her work hard but does not forget his agenda, so he gives the success. Jupiter as 5th lord in the 6th would not be comfortable there.
• Rāhu as 8th lord in the 6th: 8th lord in the 6th is called Viparīta Rāja Yoga, but for Rāhu it is not exactly that — Rāhu in the 6th is good even without the 8th lordship. With the 8th as his agenda he gives obstacles plus anxiety, and can give failure in place of Viparīta Rāja Yoga results.
• 6th lord in the 6th: his agenda is trouble and success. He takes care of both.
• Any other planet in the 6th takes care of one of the two, whichever fits its agenda.

Nimittas — Omens During Consultation

A phone rang in the classroom just as he was about to say that Sun's portion is the one that brings the fruits (Part 6). Then the sun came out.

"You should always look at the nimittas also. When you are thinking of something, when you are about to say something, there are certain signs that are happening around you. A good astrologer should keep an eye on those things."

• A bell, an auspicious sound, pleasant music at the moment of speaking = what you are saying will come true.
• It must come by itself. Arranging a sign does not work.
• Resolving a doubt: you cannot decide whether Saturn or Mercury will give the result of a Rāja Yoga, and at that moment a small child walks in and plays in a corner. The child is Mercury. Time it by Mercury.
• Use nimittas as one more input — to settle a confusion or to reinforce what you already think.

"If there is a signal sent by God without your manipulation, then that means God is telling you, yes, you are thinking in the right line, that will actually come true."

Earlier in the class he had given the picture behind the Saturn–Mercury example: Saturn is a strict, serious grandfather who wants things done one way; Mercury is a playful, witty child, and the only planet who can make Saturn smile. Saturn with Mercury is more relaxed.
