BPHS Ch.22 — 11th House Begins: Great Gains (Verse 2), Gains Accumulated (Verse 3), Go-Getter Fortune by 36th Year (Verse 4) & Suryamsa = Leo (Not Combustion)

BPHS Chapter 22 — Labha Bhava Phaladhyaya (11th House)

(Verse numbers follow the class: PVNR calls the 36th-year verse "verse 4" and says the next class starts from verse 5.)

Verse 1: Introductory Verse

"Now I am telling the results of the 11th house, O great Brahmin; please listen. By the auspiciousness of this house the native will always be happy and comfortable in the world."

The comfort of the native is guided by the 11th house.

Verse 2: Great Gains — 11th Lord in the 11th, a Kendra or Trikona, Exalted, or in Suryamsa

Combination: 11th lord in the 11th house itself, or in a quadrant or trine, or exalted, or in Suryamsa (sūryāṁśa-go 'pi vā)

Result: Bahu-lābha — he gives great gains.

The Suryamsa debate:

• Santhanam reads it as combustion: amsa can also mean "ray", so sūryāṁśa-ga = gone into the rays of the Sun, burnt by the Sun — and he takes it as "despite being combust".
• PVNR does not agree: "The probability that he is right is very, very low."
  • Parashara uses other words for combustion elsewhere. Amsa also means a division, and Parashara is unlikely to use the word confusingly here.
  • Ga means "gone into". It is used for placement in a house or the like. "If you are burnt by Surya's rays, you would not use the word ga."
  • The vā at the end means "this or this or this" — these are all alternatives. It is one more condition, not a "despite".
• PVNR's reading: Suryamsa = the amsa of the Sun = Leo.
  • Leo is the 5th house of the natural zodiac and shows royalty and kingdom. It is an auspicious sign for comforts — the comforts that come with power.
  • Which amsa — navamsa, chaturthamsa or shodasamsa? Navamsa shows overall fortune; shodasamsa shows comfort. The 11th house is about the comfort and overall well-being of the person, for which shodasamsa is very important. "It is one of them. Probably shodasamsa."

Verse 3: Large Gains, Accumulated — 11th Lord in the 2nd + 2nd Lord in a Kendra with Jupiter

Combination: 11th lord in the 2nd house + 2nd lord in a quadrant + with Jupiter

Result: Guru-lābha — large gains.

Why:

• Jupiter is the karaka of the 2nd house and a natural benefic. The 2nd lord in a quadrant with Jupiter is good for accumulating wealth.
• On top of it the 11th lord, who shows gains, is in the 2nd.
• A11: the 2nd is the 4th from the 11th, and the 4th from the 2nd is the 5th. But the 5th is the 7th from the 11th, where A11 cannot be — so take the 10th from it. A11 is in the 2nd house itself.
• A11 shows the tangible gains you are getting, and it is in the house of accumulation, the house of wealth. "The person makes gains and he does not dissipate them. All the gains are accumulated into a bank account or something."

Verse 4: 2000 Nishkas in the 36th Year — 11th Lord in the 3rd with Benefics

Combination: 11th lord in the 3rd house (vikrama bhava) + conjoined by śubha grahas (natural, functional benefics)

Result: In the 36th year he has 2000 nishkas in his fortune. A nishka is a measure of money, a coin of the old days.

How to read the result:

• "This is too specific. Bottom line is you become very rich." For today one might say a million-dollar lottery. "Do not be misled by the specific result." In the previous verse Parashara said guru-lābha, great gains; here he quantifies it a little.
• Why the 36th year? "Just as always, we have no clue why 36th year." PVNR takes it to mean early success: the person achieves early in life.

Why the combination is good:

• Just as the 10th lord in an Artha Trikona was good in the 10th house verses, the 11th lord in a Kama Trikona is good. It connects two Kama Trikonas.
• The 11th lord's agenda is to give gains; the 3rd house is initiative. The person has great initiative to get gains — "a go-getter kind of person." He is likely to have early success, especially if that planet is associated with benefics.

PVNR's caution:

"This combination is actually easy to find. Anything that is easy to find you should apply with a pinch of salt, because it cannot be so simple."

• Many people have initiative and are not successful. Other factors must be seen: where is lagna, where is lagna lord, where is the 10th lord, where is the 9th lord.

On the 2000 nishkas (student's question at the end):

• The weight of a nishka is not known. Taking it as the size of a gold coin sold today — almost $1000 — 2000 coins is $2 million. A lot of money even now.
• "Do not be misled by the count. Is it 2000 cents or 2000 thousand-dollar notes? 2000 elephants, 2000 houses, 2000 acres of land? The unit matters, not just the number."
