The Problem With Standard Arudha Calculation

The test: Parāśara says that when all or many planets occupy or aspect the 11th from AL, the person is very successful financially. Dhirubhai Ambani was one of the richest Indians, born in an ordinary family, founder of Reliance, fully self-made. If the principles are applied correctly, his 11th from AL must carry many planets and far more than his 12th.

Fractional graha dṛṣṭi used in the count (Parāśara's scheme):

• Every planet: full on the 7th, ¾ on the 4th and 8th, ½ on the 5th and 9th, ¼ on the 3rd and 10th.
• Mars is full on the 4th and 8th, Jupiter on the 5th and 9th, Saturn on the 3rd and 10th.
• Rahu is taken as aspecting the 2nd, 5th, 7th and 9th in full. Ketu's aspect is not counted.

Dhirubhai Ambani by the standard (sign) method

• Lagna Sagittarius. Lagna lord Jupiter is in Virgo, the 10th sign. The 10th from Virgo is Gemini — the 7th from lagna, not allowed. Take the 10th from Gemini → Standard AL = Pisces.
• 11th from Pisces = Capricorn: Saturn occupies (1), Jupiter full aspect (1), Venus and Mercury from Scorpio ¼ each (½) → 2.5.
• 12th from Pisces = Aquarius: Rahu occupies (1), Mars full aspect (1), Venus and Mercury ¾ each (1½), Sun and Moon ¼ each (½) → 4.
• The 12th has more than the 11th. For one of the richest self-made men in India that is the wrong way round.

Working with exact strengths from Parāśara's dṛṣṭi formula instead of ¼–½–¾ would shift the numbers a little, not the outcome.

Is the birth time off?

• A student suggested rectifying. The teacher declined: an error of about 6 minutes would move the lagna to Scorpio and change everything, but take the chart as it stands.
• Even so he checks it. With Scorpio lagna the AL is Aquarius and the 11th is Sagittarius: Sun and Moon occupy, Mars ½, Jupiter ¾. The 11th is now stronger than the 12th, but still not "many planets".
• And he is sure the native is a Dhanus lagna person, not Scorpio.

So something else is going wrong.

Alternative Arudha Longitude Approach

The teacher presents this as an alternative to study, not a conclusion.

"The alternative approach is not sanctioned by Parāśara, but it is possible that there are some missing verses or some corruptions. If you apply this, you will see a lot more things making sense with respect to Parāśara's teachings on Arudha padas."

Why a pada must be a point

• To reckon houses from any reference — lagna, Ghati Lagna, Moon, Sun, Arudha Lagna — a longitude is needed: 0–30° from it is the 1st house, 30–60° the 2nd, and so on.
• The sign method gives only a sign. Without a longitude there are no houses from Arudha Lagna.
• Sanjay Rath's answer was to give the Arudha Lagna the longitude of the lagna. The teacher calls this arbitrary: the AL is found from both the lagna and the lagna lord, and the last reference used is the lagna lord, so one could as well take the lord's longitude.
• The teacher does not accept that "the previous sign is the 12th house, the one before it the 11th". Houses rest on sphuṭas: Parāśara ties bhāva dṛṣṭi to sphuṭas; his graha dṛṣṭi regions for Mars, Jupiter and the rest are stated in degrees aligned to 30° steps; tradition calls houses 7–12 the visible half and 1–6 the invisible half.
• So any reference from which houses are counted has to be defined as a point.

The method

1. Take the exact longitude of the house cusp. For the lagna it is the lagna degree; each other house cusp is that same degree in the next signs — exactly 30° per house, not Śrīpati houses.
2. Take the exact longitude of the lord of that house.
3. Find the distance from the cusp to the lord, to degrees, minutes and seconds.
4. Go the same distance onward from the lord. That point is the Arudha pada of the house.
5. Exception: if the point falls in the 1st or 7th house from the starting cusp — within 0–30° or 180–210° of it — take the 10th from it, that is, subtract 90°.

Which house the lord sits in no longer matters, only the longitudes. Even with the lagna lord in the lagna, the 4th or the 10th the exception may not apply.

Standard and longitude methods compared

• Standard: a pada can fall only in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th sign from its house. Six signs, no others. For A10 that means only the 12th, 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th or 8th from lagna.
• Longitude: a pada can fall anywhere, even in the 2nd from its house, except the two zones Parāśara rules out — 0–30° and 180–210° from the starting cusp.

Where it comes from

• Research, not a classic. The BPHS the teacher has seen speaks of counting houses.
• Someone told him of a different version of Parāśara that refers to the sphuṭas of lagna and lagna lord. He has not seen it himself.
• Sanjay Rath, laying out the basics for him 11 or 12 years before this class, said two approaches had been given to him — one by signs, one by longitudes — that signs are simpler and are what he follows, and that the teacher could experiment. It was not discussed again. The sign method became the public standard by default.

"This is not really my idea. This is a possibility that was suggested to me by Sanjay ji himself, and I just explored it, and now I am sharing with you."

• The teacher experimented for some years and drew some conclusions, but is not fully confident: "I have not seen a rishi saying this is how you do."

The teacher's own chart

• Lagna 14° Virgo, Mercury 3° Aries. Standard: Mercury in the 8th, the 8th from Aries → AL Scorpio.
• By longitude: the distance is about 11° short of seven full signs, so 3° Scorpio minus 11° → about 22° Libra.
• Some things stay the same from the new AL — Mercury and Venus are still in its 6th. Some change — Mars moves from the 6th to the 7th.

Arudha padas in divisional charts

A student asked how to use this in a varga such as D-24. Two approaches; which is right is open.

1. Take the longitudes of the lagna and the lagna lord inside the divisional chart and find the padas there. Divisional longitudes are extremely sensitive to birth time, and this may not be the right thing: the ātmakāraka, for instance, is not found from divisional longitudes.
2. Treat the Arudha pada found in the rāśi chart as a point in the zodiac — like a planet, an upagraha, Ghati Lagna or Hora Lagna — and place that point in the varga as one would a planet. Still sensitive to birth time, but less so.

• Example: Dhirubhai's AL at 29° Taurus is in the last daśāṁśa of an even sign. Count from the 9th, Capricorn → Libra in D-10.
• Do it by hand for a while; it is not difficult.

Dhirubhai Ambani — Alternative Approach Validation

Birth data: December 28, 1932, 6:37 AM IST, Chorwad (70°14'E, 21°01'N)
Lagna: Sagittarius 1°20'. Lagna lord Jupiter at 0°10' Virgo.

Alternative AL

• The exact 10th from lagna is 1°20' Virgo. Jupiter at 0°10' Virgo is 1°10' short of it. Distance lagna → Jupiter = 270° − 1°10'.
• By house reckoned from the lagna degree Jupiter is in the 9th, not the 10th. That does not matter; only the longitude is used.
• From Jupiter go the same distance: 0°10' Virgo + 270° = 0°10' Gemini; less 1°10' → 29° Taurus.
• Exception zones: 1°20' Sagittarius–1°20' Capricorn (1st) and 1°20' Gemini–1°20' Cancer (7th). 29° Taurus is in neither.
• Alternative AL = 29° Taurus. Most of the 1st house from AL lies in Gemini, but the cusp — the start of the house, its most effective point and its controller — is in Taurus.

Personality

"He is a Taurus person in terms of the personality, like a bull. That is his personality — not Pisces, not like a rishi or something."

• Taurus need not show a businessman as such. It shows a forceful, very determined person. He struggled, worked extremely hard, and bullied the market.
• His sons may or may not be like bulls. He was.

12th house from AL — cusp 29° Aries

The teacher does not play this down: "It's a big number. There are a lot of aspects on the 12th house, showing a lot of expenses."

11th house from AL — cusp 29° Pisces

• Ketu is not counted, so eight planets. Every one of the eight aspects the 11th with half strength or more.

"On average, every planet has some 80–85% aspect on the 11th house. Parāśara says if all the planets or several planets are aspecting the 11th house from Arudha Lagna, the person will be financially very successful. That fits well here."

• 6½ on the 11th against 3¼ on the 12th. By the sign method it was 2½ against 4.

A10 (Rājapada)

• 10th cusp 1°20' Virgo. Its lord Mercury is at 21°43' Scorpio: the exact 3rd house from the cusp plus 20°23'.
• From Mercury: the exact 3rd is 21°43' Capricorn; add 20°23' → about 12° Aquarius.
• Houses from the AL by longitude: 29° Taurus–29° Gemini is the 1st, and so on; the 9th runs 29° Capricorn–29° Aquarius. A10 is in the 9th from AL.
• By the sign method the Rājapada is in the 11th from AL: good, but it meets none of Parāśara's criteria.

"Parāśara says, from Arudha Lagna, if Dārapada or Bhāgyapada or Putrapada or Rājapada — any Arudha pada — is in a kendra or kona, then it will flourish."

• Here it is in a trine, and the best trine. His career was a great success.

A2 (Dhanapada)

• Sign method: A2 is in Libra, the 8th from AL Pisces. Padas in the 6th or 8th from AL suffer. His Dhanapada — his tangible assets — did not suffer at all.
• Longitude method: 2nd cusp 1°20' Capricorn. Its lord Saturn is at 10°41' Capricorn, 9°21' ahead. Saturn + 9°21' = 20°02' Capricorn (the teacher rounds to 20°01').
• That is still inside the 2nd house itself (1°20' Capricorn–1°20' Aquarius), so the exception applies: take the 10th from it → 20° Libra.
• The 5th from AL runs 29° Virgo–29° Libra. A2 is in the 5th from AL.

Dhanapada in the 5th and Rājapada in the 9th from Arudha Lagna: well off in wealth and in kingdom.
