D7 Saptamsha — Analyzing Children & Siblings

Complete rules for D7 (Saptamsha): how the lagna is determined, reading the sign of children planets, and the 5H/11H for progeny. PVNR's own D7 — first child (daughter) and second child (son) perfectly predicted. D3 Drekkana for siblings — and why PVNR is skeptical of its completeness versus D7's reliability.

"D7 works beautifully. As long as you have the right lagna, things just work beautifully. But D3 is something I am suspicious about — you sometimes have to explain things away and satisfy yourself even though it does not make perfect sense."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

D-7 (Saptamsa) — Finding Children: Complete Rules

Counting Children

Step 1: Look at D-7 Lagna. Is it odd or even?

  • Odd signs (Aries=1st, Gemini=3rd, Leo=5th, Libra=7th, Sagittarius=9th, Aquarius=11th) → Count forward
  • Even signs (Taurus=2nd, Cancer=4th, Virgo=6th, Scorpio=8th, Capricorn=10th, Pisces=12th) → Count backward

Step 2: Find the 5th house (forward or backward per above). The sign you land on = first child's indicator.

Step 3: Find the lord of that sign. Go to where the lord is placed. That sign = the child's "Lagna" for reading from your chart.

Step 4: For subsequent children, continue the same direction:

  • 3rd from first child sign = second child's indicator
  • 3rd from there = third child, and so on

Manduka Gati = "Frog Jump": The process of hopping from one child sign to the next (every 3 signs) is called Manduka Gati — the frog's jump. Each jump represents the next child.

Ketu stops the jump: If you encounter Rahu or Ketu while counting from one child to the next:

  • Ketu (and Rahu) try to stop the flow of children at that point
  • If the planet intended to give the next child is very strong (own sign, exalted), it can overcome Ketu's resistance
  • If weak, the count stops there — no more children beyond that

Special rule: Ketu in D-7 Lagna → Reverse direction:

  • If Ketu is in the D-7 Lagna itself, reverse the counting direction (Ketu reverses everything)

Finding the Child's Lagna (from Father's/Mother's D-7)

Important: If the lord of the child-indicator sign is in that same sign (lord in own sign), take that sign itself as the child's Lagna.

If the lord is elsewhere: Go to the lord's sign and take that as the child's Lagna.

"This lagna in your D-7 chart doesn't mean the child's actual natal lagna. It is the child's nature and fortune as viewed from your point of view — from your vantage point."

— PVNR

Subjectivity of relatives' charts: What you see of your child in your D-7 is how you (the father/mother) experience the child — not the complete objective reality. The child's own natal chart and the other parent's D-7 will give different (sometimes contrary) perspectives. This is by design.

Male/Female Determination — 3 Principles

Apply all 3 and see which dominates:

Principle 1: Sign of the Child's Lagna (Where the Lord Is)

Sign TypeResultExceptions
Odd signMaleGemini (odd but female), Aquarius (odd but female)
Even signFemaleCancer (even but male), Pisces (even but male)

The 4 exception signs: Gemini, Cancer, Aquarius, Pisces — their sex is reversed.

Principle 2: Planets in the Child's Lagna Sign

PlanetsSex
Sun, Mars, Jupiter, RahuMale
Moon, Venus, KetuFemale
Saturn, MercuryEunuch (no preference — look at other influences on them)

Principle 3: Dignity in the Sign

  • Exalted planet in that sign → Male
  • Debilitated planetFemale

Summary: Evaluate all three; the most dominant principle wins. If they conflict, the stronger planet or sign wins.

PVNR's D-7 (Saptamsa) — His Own Children

D-7 Lagna: Gemini (Mithuna) = 3rd sign = odd → count forward

First Child (Daughter)

  • 5H forward from Gemini = Libra (Libra is the 5th sign forward: Gem→Can→Leo→Vir→Lib = 5th)
  • Lord of Libra = Venus. Venus is in Taurus.
  • First child's Lagna = Taurus

Sex determination:

  • Principle 1: Taurus = 2nd sign = even → female
  • Principle 2: Planets in Taurus = Venus (female) + Rahu (male) — but Venus is in own sign (much stronger)
  • Principle 3: No exalted or debilitated planets here
  • Verdict: Female child ✓ (PVNR's first child is a daughter)

Nature of first child: Taurus = hardworking, Venus = very creative, passionate, artistic.

Verification (daughter's actual chart):

  • She has Virgo Lagna with Rahu in Lagna
  • Venus exalted in Pisces (7H from Virgo) → Malavya Mahapurusha Yoga + Lakshmi Yoga; Venus aspecting Lagna
  • Venus = her Atmakaraka (highest degree among all planets → soul's indicator)
  • Strong Venusian nature confirmed → matches D-7 reading perfectly

"She is a very creative person with lot of Venusian qualities. That actually tallies with what you see in my chart."

— PVNR

Second Child (Son)

  • 3H from Libra = Sagittarius (3rd from Libra: Lib→Sco→Sag = 3rd)
  • BUT: Between Libra and Sagittarius lies Scorpio — Ketu is in Scorpio
  • Ketu in the path tries to stop the second child (Manduka Gati halted)
  • However, Jupiter is in Sagittarius in own sign → very strong. Jupiter overcomes Ketu's resistance.
  • Jupiter's strength (own sign) is what gave PVNR his second child.

"Without Jupiter's blessings, the second child would not have come. It is really Jupiter who gave the second child."

— PVNR
  • Lord of Sagittarius = Jupiter. Jupiter is in Sagittarius (in own sign).
  • Second child's Lagna = Sagittarius (lord in own sign → take the sign itself)

Sex determination:

  • Principle 1: Sagittarius = 9th sign = odd → male
  • Principle 2: Jupiter (male) in Sagittarius
  • Verdict: Male child ✓ (PVNR's second child is a son)

Verification (son's actual chart):

  • Libra Lagna with 4 planets in 10H (Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus)
    • 1L (Venus) + 9L (Mercury) + 10L (Moon?) — multiple Raj Yogas
  • AL in Capricorn. 3H and 6H from AL = empty (no malefics) = clear saintly image
  • Jupiter in Pisces in Purva Bhadrapada 4th quarter (own nakshatra, exaltation Navamsa, own sign) → extremely strong Jupiter. Son's strong Jupiterian nature dominates.
  • Jupiter in Pisces aspects Cancer (10H in son's D-7 from Lagna) with Graha Drishti → Jupiter strongly influences his karma.
  • Son (age 5 at time of lesson): very sweet, soft-spoken, doesn't get angry, extremely mature for age — pure Jupiter.

Timing Events in Children's Lives Using Father's Dashas

Rule: Take the child's Lagna (from D-7 above). Count from that Lagna to see what the running Mahadasha lord means for that child:

PVNR running Mercury Dasha (current at time of lesson):

ChildChild's LagnaHouses Mercury owns from that LagnaInterpretation
First child (daughter)Taurus2H (Gemini=Virgo? Wait: from Taurus: 2H=Gemini, 5H=Virgo; Mercury owns Gemini+Virgo) → 2H (family/resources/speech) + 5H (abilities, scholarship)Learning, showing abilities; speech and scholarship important now
Second child (son)Sagittarius7H (Gemini from Sagittarius) + 10H (Virgo from Sagittarius); Mercury in 5H from SagittariusRelationships, learning, scholarship — also confirming learning

For young children: Focus on 4H (basic education), 5H (abilities/scholarship), and 6H (health) — not career, marriage, etc.

Example — Ketu Dasha (PVNR, 2011–2018):

  • Son (Sagittarius Lagna in D-7) during this period: age 13–20 (teenager)
  • Ketu in 12H from Sagittarius = Scorpio. Ketu in own sign (Scorpio). 12H = Moksha Sthana. Ketu = Moksha karaka.
  • Result: During this period, son will be very spiritually inclined. More interested in religious/spiritual matters than typical for a teenager. Important spiritual events/turning points.

"It doesn't mean he will get Moksha. He is just a teenager. But for a teenager, he will be more interested in spiritual matters and there will be some important events relating to spirituality."

— PVNR

Caveat: These predictions from father's chart give approximate 3-7 year windows. For precise timing, use the child's own Narayana Dasha computed separately.

Overall Luck With Children

This is a separate question from "identify and analyze individual children":

Chart TypeHouse to CheckMethod
Male charts5th house (irrespective of odd/even Lagna)Look at 5H lord. Where is the lord placed? Is it well placed or in Marana Karaka Sthana?
Female charts9th house (irrespective of odd/even Lagna)Look at 9H lord strength

PVNR's D-7 example: Gemini Lagna → 5H lord = Venus (Libra's lord). Venus is in Taurus (own sign) in the 12H from Gemini.

Rule: Dusthana lord in own sign = good. Venus in Taurus = 12th lord in 12th house = Vimala Yoga. This is a good placement despite being in a dusthana.

PVNR: "Very happy and contented with my children." ✓

Marana Karaka Sthana warning: If the 5H lord is in its own Marana Karaka Sthana (e.g., Venus in 6H from any lagna), the person is very unfortunate and dissatisfied with children. Suggest remedies — strengthen that 5H lord.

D-3 (Parashari Drekana) — Siblings: Review and Caveats

Counting Rules (Same as D-7 principle)

  • Odd D-3 Lagna → count forward; Even → count backward
  • Younger sibling: Count 3H forward/backward from D-3 Lagna
  • Elder sibling: Count 11H forward/backward
  • Continue: each additional younger = 3 from last; each additional elder = 11 from last
  • Ketu in D-3 Lagna → Reverse the direction (special exception)
  • Rahu/Ketu in the counting path → stops or significantly hinders the sibling flow at that point

PVNR's Caveat on D-3

"D7 works beautifully. As long as you have the right lagna, things just work beautifully. But D3 is something I am suspicious about — I don't know if it is really perfect. You sometimes have to explain things away and satisfy yourself even though it does not make perfect sense. Maybe there are some missing links in how Drekkana is applied today. I advise: don't pay too much attention to D3 until it is better understood."

— PVNR

Sex of sibling from D-3 has more exceptions than the child rules — not covered in this lesson.
