M.S. Subbalakshmi — Rasi Yogas, Singer's Navamsa & Spouse Analysis

Introduction — M.S. Subbalakshmi

She had passed away the day before yesterday. She was a great Carnatic singer. If you heard the Vishnu Sahasranamam cassette playing in a temple, it was in all likelihood her voice. She sang bhajans and songs in praise of God, and her Vishnu Sahasranamam is especially popular in South India.

What the class knows about her:

• Her death — the only dated event.
• She was a great singer.
• She was very humble and brought compassion and humility to her work.
• She acted in several Tamil movies for a while in the 1930s or '40s.
• (From students, later) her husband was a politician; she had diabetes.

Rasi Chart — Yoga Identification

Libra lagna with Mars in it. Moon and Jupiter in Aries (7th). Venus, Saturn and Ketu in Cancer (10th). Sun and Mercury in Virgo (12th). Rahu in Capricorn (4th).

Gajakesari Yoga

• Jupiter and Moon are together in the 7th house (Aries).
• Result: fame. If the yoga occurs in lagna or the 7th house, or aspects lagna, the fame is long-lasting. Otherwise it is "some fame".
• Sri Rama had Jupiter and Moon together in Cancer lagna — Jupiter exalted and Moon in his own sign, which makes the yoga very strong. Long after he ended his existence in this world, people still remember and revere him.
• Here Moon and Jupiter are in the 7th and aspect lagna, so the yoga is strong. She is well known and will continue to be after her death.

Tapasya Yoga

• Saturn, Venus and Ketu are together in Cancer, the 10th house.
• The yoga forms when these three are either in mutual trines or together.
• Result: a person very dedicated to a cause, who can devote the entire life to that one thing. It makes a great tapasvi — in her case a great tapasvini.

Budha-Aditya Yoga

• Sun and Mercury are together in Virgo, but Sun is at 0° and Mercury at 25°.
• The yoga is very weak.

Raj Yoga Embedded in the Tapasya Yoga

• Venus is lagna lord.
• Saturn owns the 4th (Capricorn) and the 5th (Aquarius) from Libra — a kendra lord and a trine lord at once.
• If the lagna lord conjoins a trine lord or a quadrant lord, it is a Raj Yoga. The conjunction of Venus and Saturn is "a nice Raj Yoga".

Navamsa — Singer's Combination

Apart from marriage and married life, the Navamsa shows a person's abilities. The trines of Navamsa — lagna, 5th and 9th — show what your abilities are.

The Classical Principle

Either Sun or Moon has to be in a trine from Navamsa lagna for somebody to be a really good singer.

• It does not always work — "there are clearly some exceptions, but it works in a lot of cases".
• Somebody may be well known as a singer without being a good singer. Then you may not see the combination.

What each luminary gives:

• Sun in a trine = sense of rhythm. Sun is the planet of rhythm. The music is more beat-oriented than melody-oriented. Such people can be instrumental musicians rather than good singers — okay singers, great instrumentalists.
• Moon in a trine = sense of melody. A good singer of melodious music.
• Moon and Venus in trines = a melodious singer.

In Her Navamsa

Navamsa lagna is Pisces. Venus and Moon — two watery planets — are in Scorpio, a watery sign, the 9th house.

• This gives good singing ability.
• Her singing is melody-oriented more than rhythm-oriented. "She will have a very strong sense of melody within herself."

Navamsa — Husband Analysis (7H as Lagna)

For the husband, take the 7th house of Navamsa as lagna. Here that is Virgo. Its lord is Mercury.

PVNR says he knows little about the husband and is "shooting in the dark".

• Mercury as lagna lord: a learned, intelligent, smart person.
• Mercury is with Saturn in Leo — the 12th house from Virgo. Lagna lord in the 12th.

Lagna Lord Placement = Focus of Intelligence

A student offers "spiritual or philosophical" for lagna lord in the 12th. PVNR: possible, but the 12th is not the house of philosophising. It is the house of giving.

"Wherever lagna lord is, that is where your intelligence is focused."

The reasoning:

• Lagna is simply your existence — brain, body, everything that makes up "my existence".
• Signs and houses are inanimate. They are just there. They have no intelligence in them and no force behind them.
• Lords of houses — planets — are animate. They carry the blessings of Narayana. They show the intelligence, the engine that runs the matter. "There is God in that particular part."
• How I apply my intelligence to my existence, how I think and feel — that is seen only from planets.

"If you see the house that lagna lord occupies, that is where your intelligence will be focused on. That is the primary focus of your intelligence."

Lagna lord in the 12th: the person gives intentionally. A natural giver, a natural philanthropist — vitaraṇaśīla, a great giver.

Venus and Moon in the 3rd From Virgo

From Virgo, Venus and Moon in Scorpio are in the 3rd house.

A student says "romance". PVNR corrects it:

• 5th house is the house of romance. 7th house is the house of relations. A7, the Arudha of the 7th house (Darapada), shows your relationships with people.
• Venus and Moon in the 5th with Darapada also there: you can confidently say the person will have a romance, will probably not listen to the parents, and will most likely have a love marriage rather than an arranged one.
• The 3rd is not the house of romance. It is the house of initiative (parakrama), and also of creative abilities.

Venus in the 3rd in anybody's chart: guess a composer or a poet.

• Watery planets are creative. Earthy planets lean toward structure.
• Mercury in the 3rd — Mercury is an earthy planet — a good writer, a journalist, novels and essays.
• Venus in the 3rd — one of the 108 names of Venus is Kavi. He is the natural poet among the planets.
• Venus with Moon in the 3rd — a good poet and composer. He can make tunes and songs, be a bard, a singing poet. Moon adds some singing ability.

PVNR does not know whether the husband sang. The chart says singer, composer or some creative person is very likely — "assuming that this Navamsa is right".

Political Power — 10th and 5th

A student says her husband was a politician.

• To see whether somebody can have political power, look at the 10th and 5th houses. The 10th is the house of karma. The 5th is the influence you have in society — the house of power and fame.
• Sun and Mars are the planets of power. From Virgo they are in the 5th house (Capricorn).
• But they are with Rahu. They are eclipsed. Rahu is also the planet who ends power.
• Reading: many connections, some popularity, some power — not a chief minister, governor or minister.

PVNR's verdict on the Navamsa: he does not know when she married or much about the husband, but on the little the class supplied "it may be okay".
