The Failed Prediction

• Two years earlier a student had predicted marriage for this native in July–August 2007. It did not happen. The family is looking and asks when.
• Lagna Libra 12°50'. Moon Aquarius 15°17', in Aquarius in the Navāṁśa too (vargottama). Navāṁśa lagna Capricorn.
• The Navāṁśa lagna changes at 13°20', about two and a half minutes later. The birth time is taken as given and not rectified. Everything below rests on that.
• Saturn daśā began at the end of 1997 (19 November 1997 with standard Lahiri; a few months later with the fixed-plane variant PVNR uses) and runs to 2016.
• At the time of the class Saturn–Venus antardaśā is almost over, with no marriage.

Saturn–Venus — Why Did It Not Give Marriage?

PVNR's first reaction is that it should have.

• Student: Venus is the 8th lord in the Rāśi. PVNR: he is also the lagna lord, in the 11th. Not inimical.
• In the Navāṁśa Venus is the yogakāraka — 5th and 10th lord — in the 7th house. Strong.
• Saturn is in the 8th house of the Navāṁśa, but he is the lagna lord, and he is in the Upapada (Leo).
• Venus in the 12th from the daśā lord Saturn is no fault. The 12th is a good house for Venus.
• The one fault seen at this stage: the antardaśā Pāka from Saturn to Venus falls in the 6th house. That is not auspicious.

"Looking at all the factors, I would have actually quite honestly expected the marriage in this Venus antardaśā. … So something is fishy."

Two more points against Venus come out later, when the Vimśottarī is reconciled with the other methods:

• Take the Navāṁśa Upapada (Leo) as lagna. Venus is in the 12th from it. He does not show the giving of the UL.
• Take Saturn as lagna. Venus is in the 12th from him and owns the 3rd and 10th from him — a functional malefic. He is yogakāraka from lagna, but a malefic from the daśā lord.

Nārāyaṇa Daśā of the Navāṁśa — the Student's Method

Libra daśā is running.

• Libra is a śīrṣodaya rāśi: it gives its own results in the first third.
• Its lord Venus is in the 7th, in a pṛṣṭodaya rāśi: he gives his results in the last third.
• The middle third gives the results of the aspects on Libra: Moon, Sun and Saturn, by rāśi dṛṣṭi.
• Order by chara kāraka rank: Moon (Bhrātṛkāraka), Sun (Putrakāraka), Saturn (Jñātikāraka).
• Each third is exactly three years, so each planet gets one year.
• The class first applied these to August 2004–August 2007. A student pointed out that those years are the first third, Libra's own. The aspects run from August 2007.
• Moon's aspect on Libra: August 2007 to August 2008.
• Libra itself is the 10th house and only aspects the Upapada. It is not a strong candidate for marriage.
• Moon is the 7th lord. Moon and Rāhu exchange signs, and if the exchange gives its result it is as if Moon and Venus are together in the 7th. Moon's year can give marriage.
• Sun's year: unlikely. Saturn's year: possible, he is the lagna lord.

Tithi Praveśa — Look Before You Commit

"It is very rarely that you are so confident that a particular antardaśā must give a particular result, because there are always two or three different candidates. … In the year the person gets married, there are clear indications in that particular year. So for simple events like promotion or marriage, I strongly recommend looking at Tithi Praveśa before you commit yourself to a prediction."

The student had not looked at Tithi Praveśa when he made the prediction.

TP 2006 (the year the prediction pointed to):

• Ruler of the year: Sun. In the Rāśi he is the lagna lord in lagna (Leo).
• In the Navāṁśa the lagna lord Sun is debilitated in the 3rd house. Not good for the lagna. A lagna lord in a kāma trikoṇa shows initiative, but that alone does not give marriage.
• Favourable: the 7th lord Saturn is in the 7th house, with Mars. Mars is the 9th lord in both Rāśi and Navāṁśa and lord of the Upapada.
• Verdict: a chance, in the TP daśā of Saturn or Mars, but no telltale combination. This chart does not show a year of marriage.
• The Navāṁśa lagna here is not on a border: about eleven and a half minutes of leeway on one side and six on the other.

TP 2007 (the year running during the class):

• Ruler of the year: Venus. In the Rāśi the 7th lord Mars is in lagna (Taurus) and the lagna lord Venus is in the 3rd.
• In the Navāṁśa (Aquarius lagna) Venus is the yogakāraka and 9th lord, in lagna. The kāraka of marriage, ruling the year, in lagna with 9th lordship: very strong, unless the lagna lord or 7th lord is spoiled.
• The 7th lord is spoiled. Sun is in the 6th — Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna, the 12th from the 7th — and eclipsed by Ketu.
• A student objected that Sun and Ketu are both dharmic planets for marriage. PVNR: they still do not like each other; Ketu eclipses Sun. And leave Ketu aside — any 7th lord in the 6th is bad for the 7th.
• The positive reading: the 7th lord in the 12th from the 7th is a relationship formed with some giving up. The 12th also means moving, and Ketu is the kāraka of far places. She may marry and move to another town, state or country.
• Venus and Saturn exchange signs. Saturn is the lagna lord and her Dārakāraka; Venus is the Kalatrakāraka and 9th lord. That points to marriage in this year.
• Sun can spoil it and Venus can give it. Strengthen Venus and propitiate Sun.
• Vivāha Saham and the Upapada are in Gemini. Their lord Mercury has nothing to do with lagna or the 7th. Drop him.
• Venus is the strongest candidate. Venus daśā of the TP: June–July 2008.
• The Navāṁśa lagna of this TP is on a border — it changes 2 minutes 45 seconds later. The class noticed this only afterwards.

Why the Two Programs Gave Different TP Times

The student's software and PVNR's gave Tithi Praveśa times eight to nine minutes apart.

• Standard Lahiri fixes the starting point of the zodiac but projects the planets onto a plane that keeps moving.
• PVNR's variant fixes the plane as well (he calls it the Viṣṇu-nābhi plane; "Chitrāpakṣa" in the new software).
• A small change to the starting point moves Sun and Moon by the same amount, so the tithi return and the TP time stay the same. Changing the plane moves them by different amounts, so the Sun–Moon difference changes.
• The TP time shifts by two or three minutes, sometimes up to fifteen. That can change the Navāṁśa lagna of the TP chart.
• In a natal chart the difference is immaterial outside border cases. It can move Vimśottarī dates by a month or two.
• PVNR tested both on Tithi Praveśa charts and finds the fixed plane more accurate. His argument: if a fixed star is the reference, the plane it is projected on should be fixed too.

Nārāyaṇa Daśā of the Rāśi

Libra daśā is running here as well.

• First third: Libra itself. Second third: its lord Venus. Last third: the aspects on Libra.
• The last third runs from April 2006 to August 2009 — 40 months.
• Six planets aspect Libra by rāśi dṛṣṭi: Moon, Mars, Ketu, Mercury, Sun, Venus. Each gets 6⅔ months.
• Order: Ketu, Mercury, Moon, Venus, Mars, Sun.
• The fourth part, Venus, ends about 19 June 2008. The fifth, Mars, follows.
• Venus is the lagna lord. A lagna lord aspecting lagna gives an auspicious event, not necessarily marriage. As the natural significator he still has a chance.
• PVNR picks Mars: he is the 7th lord and is with Ketu, the other kāraka of marriage.
• So the second half of June and July 2008.

Vimśottarī — Can Saturn–Sun Give Marriage?

The window falls in Saturn–Sun, not Saturn–Venus.

• In the Rāśi the Upapada is in Cancer. Sun is the 2nd lord from it, the one who brings the marriage.
• In the Navāṁśa the Upapada is in Leo. Sun is its lord, and so the dispositor of the lagna lord Saturn.
• Sun is in a kendra from Saturn. Venus is in the 12th from Saturn.
• On Vimśottarī alone PVNR would still have picked Venus, not Sun. Sun becomes a candidate only because the Tithi Praveśa and both Nārāyaṇa daśās point to the same months.

Transits for 1 July 2008

PVNR does not usually lean on transits; he makes an exception here. Count from natal Moon first — the same sign in Rāśi and Navāṁśa.

The two kārakas of marriage, Venus and Ketu, are transiting well. Then look at the sensitive points:

• Ketu in Cancer touches natal Navāṁśa Venus and the 7th house of the natal Navāṁśa. Cancer is also the Upapada of the natal Rāśi. Ketu is the 11th lord of the natal Navāṁśa and sits in its lagna.
• Saturn in Leo transits the sign that holds the Navāṁśa lagna lord Saturn and the Navāṁśa Upapada.
• Leo and Cancer are the two sensitive signs, and Ketu and the lagna lord are on them.

"Ketu transit is very, very vital. So praying to Gaṇeśa will help her get the most out of the transit."

Remedies for Marriage

The general remedy from the Upapada:

1. Fast on the day of the lord of the sign holding the UL. Here the Rāśi UL is in Moon's sign: fast on Mondays.
2. At the end of the day pray to the deity of the 2nd lord from the UL. Here that is Sun. She wants a husband, so choose a male deity. Mercury is with Sun, so a Viṣṇu avatāra fits: Rāma. Śiva is equally good. Whichever she likes more.
3. A simple mantra is enough — Om Namaḥ Śivāya or Śrī Rāma Rāma Rāma. One mālā, then eat.
4. If a full fast is hard, cut the food down to juice and fruit and tighten it slowly.

Lakṣmī Gaṇapati, for Ketu's transit:

• Whenever possible, not on a fixed day: Om Śrīṁ Hrīṁ Klīṁ Glauṁ Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Vara Varada Sarvajanaṁ Me Vaśamānaya Svāhā.
• 108 times takes ten to fifteen minutes. If that is hard, 28 times.
• Why Lakṣmī Gaṇapati: the event is auspicious, transit Ketu is on Venus, and natal Ketu is in a sign of Venus.
• If someone were working against the marriage, a different Gaṇapati would be chosen. This is a straightforward case.

Arranged or Love Marriage?

• A student: Rāhu is with Venus in the Navāṁśa. The 5th lord Venus is in the 7th and the Upapada lord Sun is in the 5th.
• PVNR accepts the 5th house link: Sun, whose antardaśā is about to start, is in the 5th, and the 5th lord is in the 7th. Some chance of love.
• A student suggested Ketu gives a marriage across boundaries. PVNR: a marriage across community or country is a separate category from a love marriage. The two overlap but are not the same.
• Every other factor shows a traditional marriage.

"It could be an arranged marriage where they go on some courtship for a few months."
