Deity from D-20 — Who Dominates the 12th from Ātmakāraka

The question

A student asks whether the software can give aspects on a chosen point — he wants the aspects on the 12th house from Ātmakāraka in D-20. The teacher says the next version (7.41) lists houses counted from every planet, as it already does from lagna and the ārūḍhas, with the aspects on each.

The student then asks about the teacher's Kārakāṁśa articles: when the 12th is empty, as with Ramana Maharshi, the teacher took the planet joining Ketu. Was it only Ketu's company, or also an aspect on the 12th?

Four ways a planet influences the 12th

Occupancy, lordship, aspect and argalā. The teacher explains them with a project team:

• someone with a deep desire to work on the project;
• someone who has access to the information, whether he has the desire or not;
• someone with a key role — the hardware architect without whose sign-off the chip is not made. That is argalā;
• and the one who goes to lunch with the project manager every day. He may end up the key man.

The last is the link to the kāraka. Ketu is the kāraka of spirituality and of the 12th.

"If there are multiple planets affecting a house, if one of them has a link to Ketu, that planet has a better chance of dominating the spirituality of the person, because Ketu is the karaka of spirituality."

The working rule

• See who owns the 12th from Ātmakāraka, who occupies it, who has a strong aspect on it — more than about two-thirds — and who has argalā on it.
• Then see which one dominates. The one with several links dominates: the lord who also aspects the house; an aspecting planet that also aspects the lord, or aspects the kāraka, or is with the kāraka.
• Look for the confluence of several parameters and go with that planet.
• To know beforehand which of two or three influences will win, without knowing the person, is very difficult.

The Job-Seeker's D-20

• Ātmakāraka is Mars, at 27° in D-20. The lagna is at 28°. They are almost at the same degree, so the 12th house from lagna stands for the 12th from Mars; the aspect figures are off by a small amount.
• The 12th (Sagittarius) is empty. Venus is at 23° Sagittarius, but that is the 11th house, not the 12th.
• The lord is Jupiter.
• Mars has argalā on it — the Ātmakāraka always has argalā on the 12th from himself. The Moon does not: he is in the 10th from it, not the 11th.
• Aspects on the point, from the software: Jupiter about 83% (his 9th-house graha dṛṣṭi from Aries), Saturn 56%, the Sun a little.
• Saturn in Taurus, a benefic sign, would show Viṣṇu. But his influence is the smaller one.
• Jupiter is the lord and has the biggest aspect. He dominates. Jupiter shows Śiva.

Which form of Śiva

• Jupiter is in Aries, a malefic sign owned by Mars. A sāttvika planet with some tāmasika influence on him.

"We are not talking about Rudra, we are talking about Śiva only. But within forms of Śiva, a form that has some aggression to it. It's not absolutely pure like Saraswati or Dakshinamurti."

• A slightly aggressive form of Śiva.

The Teacher's Own D-20

The 12th from Ātmakāraka

• Ātmakāraka is the Moon, at the beginning of Cancer in D-20. The 12th from the Moon is at 1° Gemini.
• Mercury is the 12th lord and is in the 12th, at 2°49′ Gemini — very close to the cusp.
• The Mars–Sun–Venus group in Virgo aspects Gemini (rāśi dṛṣṭi) and Jupiter aspects it from Libra (graha dṛṣṭi).
• In the class chart Rahu and Ketu are at 2°42′ Sagittarius, opposite. They aspect the 12th house closely and the 12th lord Mercury within 7 minutes of arc — an almost perfect aspect.
• The site's chart puts the nodes in Scorpio in D-20, about a degree earlier in the rāśi than the class chart. It does not show this aspect.

Order of influence

1. Mercury — the lord, and sitting right there. The most important influence.
2. Rahu and Ketu. Ketu is the kāraka; Rahu is with Ketu.

Why Rahu is so strong: the 8th from Ātmakāraka

• Do not look at the 12th alone. The 8th is the other mokṣa trikoṇa.
• The 8th from the Moon is Aquarius. Saturn is in it; Rahu is the stronger lord.
• So the 8th lord from Ātmakāraka closely aspects the 12th house and the 12th lord, and is with the kāraka Ketu.

How it came out: Caṇḍī in Mercury–Rahu

• The teacher performs Caṇḍī homam every day. Rahu shows that.
• It began in Mercury daśā, Rahu antardaśā. Until late 2005 he knew nothing about Caṇḍī.
• He had worshipped Lakṣmī every Friday since 1994 and did Satyanārāyaṇa vratam every full moon. A visiting Śivācārya, priest of a Kālī temple, came to the full-moon pūjā. On entering the house he said Caṇḍī wanted to come to this house, that he would do a Caṇḍī homam there during Navarātri, and that he would take no money for it.
• The teacher was uneasy. That morning he prayed to Lakṣmī to come in whatever name was being called and see that nothing wrong was done in his house.
• Hearing Caṇḍī pāṭha for the first time, in October 2005, he followed 60–65% of the Sanskrit. It was not what he had feared. It speaks of the inner struggle to find God, and of Caṇḍī as the consort of Nārāyaṇa. He could fit it with Vedānta and with what he calls his biased Vaiṣṇava understanding.
• Then came 108 days of Caṇḍī pāṭha, and then the daily homam.

"Suddenly, in Mercury daśā, Rahu antardaśā, I got introduced to Caṇḍī. I knew nothing about her, but now I am so attached to it."

Who is the Iṣṭa Devatā

• Mercury: the 12th lord sits so strongly in the 12th itself. The teacher expects it to be Viṣṇu at the last moment, not Durgā.
• The 8th shows the struggle — sādhana, tapasya. The 12th shows giving up ego completely — realization.
• While realization is incomplete, sādhana goes on. His sādhana is through Rahu: Caṇḍī, Durgā. Full realization will come through Mercury.

The 6th from Amātyakāraka

• Amātyakāraka shows the mission in life. The 6th from him shows the struggle to fulfil it. Here it is read in D-20, for spiritual purposes.
• His Amātyakāraka is Mars. The 6th from Mars is 24° Aquarius. Its lord is again Rahu.
• That 6th is the 10th house from lagna and holds Saturn, the 9th and 10th lord, the yogakāraka. The 10th is work in society. He will not take sannyāsa and sit in a hut; he has to be active in society to fulfil the purpose.
• In Rahu antardaśā that work began: the homam manuals, telling people to do homam. Now perhaps a thousand people do it.
• Rahu is in the 8th from lagna (Sagittarius in the class chart; the site shows the nodes in Scorpio, the 7th). The 8th from Ātmakāraka is the struggle to find the self; the 8th from lagna is plain hard work. Rahu antardaśā was that.

Mercury–Saturn and Ketu daśā

• Mercury–Saturn is running — the last antardaśā of Mercury daśā; Ketu mahādaśā follows.
• Saturn is in the 10th, the dharma and karma lord, a functional benefic. He keeps the teacher active in society, without seclusion. He is not tied to the 8th like Rahu, so it is smoother. As the 6th lord from Amātyakāraka he continues the struggle for the mission.
• Ketu is in the 8th from lagna. He is the other planet aspecting the 12th from Kārakāṁśa and its lord, and he is the kāraka of mokṣa. Ketu daśā is conducive for the teacher's own experience — provided the other daśās agree, since Vimśottarī is not the only one to see.
• For the mission in society Ketu daśā gives less. By then the homam work will run by itself, as people who have done it for three or five years tell others.
• Parāśara mentions Ketu in Sagittarius in particular for the 12th house.
