Example Chart — medical career and sādhanā

Situation: Married woman, two daughters (born 1978 and 1980), a pediatrician. She has been on a spiritual path for the last 7–8 years and now wants to give her time to a spiritual cause. The published class notes put it more strongly: she wants to renounce family life and live in an āśrama.

The question a student brought: Is this the right direction for her? What will be the impact on marriage and children?

PVNR's Conceptual Distinction

"You don't have to abandon anything. Spirituality is basically seeing who you are, where you are, when you are. Just be — that is spirituality."

• True spirituality needs nothing external and no change in the external environment.
• Wanting to spread spirituality, help people, do something in society = modifying the external world. That is Dasamsa.

"You modify the world around you through Daśāṁśa, not through Viṁśāṁśa. You modify yourself through Viṁśāṁśa."

• D20 = the internal changes.
• D10 = those internal changes wanting a role in the outside world.

Which Charts Must Be Right First

• Spiritual cause → D20 and D10. Marriage → D9. Children → D7.
• The lagna of each must be confirmed before any reading. The recorded time is from 1946 and "may be wrong by 15 minutes also".
• Order of work: fix the Navamsa first (wide window), then D7, then D10, then D20 (the narrowest window).

D10 Dasamsa Analysis — Career

The native is a physician — a pediatrician.

D10 lagna Leo or Virgo? The lagna changes 1 minute 20 seconds after the rectified time, so both must be weighed.

• Leo lagna: Moon is in the 10th house (Taurus). Moon is motherly care. That shows pediatrics.
• Virgo lagna: Mercury aspecting the 10th, Venus in the 2nd or Saturn in the 6th would explain a physician, but not a children's doctor.
• Sun or Mars can also show a doctor, but a surgeon. Moon is the only planet that shows a children's doctor.
• Moon in the 10th house of D10 can show a person who works with children or teaches them.
• Conclusion: Leo.

D20 Vimsamsa Analysis — Spiritual Path

Is She a Spiritual Person?

• Rashi chart: Ketu, the 12th lord (mokṣa), is in lagna, exalted.
• D20: lagna lord Saturn is in the 12th house. Lagna lord in the 12th shows a lot of meditation and upāsanā as a personal trait. Saturn is the kāraka for meditation.
• Paths differ. Some are ritualistic, with many materials. Some centre on yajña. Some need nothing external: "it's all internalized, you just meditate". The internalized meditation is shown by Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

Ask What "Spiritual Path" Means

PVNR had the class ask what she meant: inner awakening, external worship and rituals, following gurus, going to gatherings. The answer decides which houses of D20 to read.

Mars Mahadasha in D20 (Satabdika, 1985–2005)

The last 7–8 years of inner growth fell in Mars mahādaśā.

• In the Rashi chart Mars owns the 5th (devotion, mantra) and the 12th (mokṣa, all the upāsanā one does). He is like the kāryeśa for these matters.
• The rule, from the published class notes: the 5th lord of the Rashi chart (devotion) is the kāryeśa for D20. The 10th lord of the Rashi chart is the kāryeśa for D10.
• In D20 (Capricorn lagna) Mars is 4th and 11th lord in the 10th house (Libra), in parivartana with Venus in Aries.
• The 10th house of D20 is the karma we do in spiritual matters: meeting people, discussing spiritual things.
• With him in the 10th: Mercury, the 9th lord (guidance, the guru), and both Rahu and Ketu.
• Rahu and Ketu are the planets of spiritual awakening. They sit in the house of karma, so the awakening made her think of doing some karma in society.
• Rahu and Ketu together: physically they are always opposite, but in some divisions they fall together. In D20 Rahu is not an evil planet. He is very important for spirituality, and there Rahu and Ketu "are like one".
• Mars + Mercury = 4th lord + 9th lord: a rāja yoga. The 9th is guidance; the 4th is a clear direction, and with a clear direction comes comfort. The yoga works from the start of Mars daśā and is most pronounced in Mars–Mercury.
• Mars–Venus must have been a life-changing period: Venus is yogakāraka for Capricorn lagna and is in exchange with Mars.
• Rahu (ātmakāraka) and Mars (pitṛkāraka) are together in Rashi and again in D20. AK + PiK is a rāja yoga: someone who protects, guides and lifts you up in that area of life.

One Daśā Is Not Enough

Mars–Mercury is a good candidate. So are Mars–Rahu and others — six or seven candidates in one daśā.

"As long as you are looking at just one factor, you cannot conclusively say this antardaśā must give this result."

Look at Narayana daśā and the others too, and take the intersection.

D20 Narayana Dasha — 3-Part Rule

The Three-Part Rule

A Narayana daśā gives its results in three parts.

• The sign: a śīrṣodaya (head-rising) sign gives its result in the first third. A pṛṣṭhodaya (back-rising) sign gives it in the last third.
• The lord: by the sign the lord occupies — śīrṣodaya → first third, pṛṣṭhodaya → last third.
• Middle third: planets in the sign, planets aspecting the sign, and yogas formed on the sign.
• Pṛṣṭhodaya signs, counted from Aries: 1, 2, 4, 9, 10 — Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, Capricorn.

Cancer Dasha (1992–2003) in D20

• Cancer is the 7th house; its lord Moon is in the 8th (Leo). In Cancer daśā she did spiritual sādhanā.
• Cancer is pṛṣṭhodaya → the sign gives at the end (July 1999–March 2003).
• Moon is in Leo, śīrṣodaya → the lord gives at the beginning (March 1992–November 1995).
• Middle third (about 1996–1999): the yoga on the sign. Jupiter in Gemini and Moon in Leo flank Cancer — one benefic on each side, a śubha kartari. Equal numbers on both sides and friendly planets make it stronger.
• Jupiter and Moon then act as if they were in Cancer and give the result of Gajakesari yoga. That result came in the middle third.
• The class notes add: Cancer daśā must have given her some name in spiritual matters.

What the 7th and 8th Mean in D20

• D20 is the chart of the struggle to find who you are. Pūjā, mantra and reading are paths to that.
• The 8th house shows that struggle. The class notes call it the seed house of D20.
• The 7th lord in the 8th or the 8th lord in the 7th is very good in D20. When these houses are activated the struggle ends: ātma-darśana, an inner rising.
• Here the 7th lord Moon is in the 8th. His daśā gives spiritual experiences.
• Once you are yourself, "once you just be, there is no more struggle". That end of struggle is what the mārakas show in Viṁśāṁśa — not death.
• It is the experience of supreme bliss or the glorious light within, or Kuṇḍalinī rising to a higher state.
• Any planet associated with the 8th house, the 7th lord in the 8th, or the 8th lord in the 7th: expect such an inner experience in its period.
• Every combination has a positive and a negative reading. Judge which applies.

Sagittarius Dasha (from 2003) in D20

• Sagittarius is the 12th house — sādhanā, upāsanā.
• Sagittarius is pṛṣṭhodaya → the sign gives at the end.
• Its lord Jupiter is in Gemini, śīrṣodaya → gives in the first third (March 2003–March 2005).
• Middle third (March 2005–March 2007): Saturn in Sagittarius and Jupiter aspecting it (graha and rāśi dṛṣṭi). Lagna lord in the 12th with the 12th lord on it: very good for sādhanā and meditation.
• PVNR's question to the class: is that a time for a lot of karma in society, or for continuing meditation? The planets say sādhanā until March 2007.

D10 Narayana Dasha — Virgo Dasha (2003–2012)

• D10 shows what motivates a person to do something in society. Her wish to work for a spiritual cause must show here too.
• Virgo is śīrṣodaya → the sign gives in the first third.
• Its lord Mercury is in Sagittarius, pṛṣṭhodaya → the lord gives in the last third.
• Middle third (the coming years, March 2006–March 2009): Mercury's rāśi dṛṣṭi on Virgo. He is the only planet aspecting Virgo, so he alone gives this part.
• Mercury is in the 5th house: following and recognition — important work for which she is recognised.
• Mercury is the planet of communicating and educating. Moon and Mercury are the planets of compassion and kindness. With Saturn or Jupiter instead she would be like a sādhu: guide whoever comes and let them go.
• From the published class notes: Mercury is dārakāraka and in A7. She will work with people who are attached to her at the level of the soul.
• So 2006–2009 favours going out and working with people: teaching and charity work.

What the Mind Sees — Saturn Daśā in D10

• Narayana daśā shows what is on the ground. The nakṣatra daśā shows how the mind looks at it.
• Saturn mahādaśā began in 2005. In D10 Saturn is in the 7th house in his own sign Aquarius: a very strong desire.
• She will do service and lead a simple, humble life. By Narayana daśā she may even get fame and a following for it.

"Nothing comes easy in life. When you want something, you may have to let something go."

That is the question for the marriage (Part 13).

Annual D20 (2006) — Spiritual Activity

• Annual D20 lagna is Sagittarius. Sun, the 9th lord, is in the 10th. Mercury, the 10th lord, is in the 9th with Jupiter, who is lagna lord and 4th lord.
• A dharma-karmādhipati yoga with the lagna lord and 4th lord in it. "Extremely auspicious."
• The 10th house of D20 is activity related to spirituality. Sun in it is the ruler of the year.
• So her spiritual life "may not be just internal anymore", not just sādhanā. It comes to the fore: going to an āśrama, talking to people, giving money for a cause. Some recognition can come.
• Annual D10 (from the notes): the same three planets are in yoga there too — Jupiter and Sun in the 5th, Mercury in the 10th.

"This year may be a very important year. She may actually start implementing her thought."

The marriage may have to suffer for it. There may be a break in the marriage.
