BPHS Chapter 24 — 8th Lord in Houses 7–9 (Marriage, Longevity, Dharma)

8th Lord in 7th House

Verse result: two wives; loss in business; "if a malefic is there, it is certain"

Explanation:

• From the wife's side: count from the 7th house. The 8th lord is her 2nd lord, and he sits in her lagna. A māraka in her lagna can kill the first wife, so a second marriage becomes possible.
• From the native's side: the 8th lord damages the house he occupies and brings instability and change. In the 7th that means change in marriage — more than one wife.
• Both readings together give "a good chance of two wives".
• Māraka for the native too: the 8th lord in the 7th is a killer for the native. In that planet's daśā the native must be careful; there is some danger to his or her own life.
• Business: the 7th is interaction with others, dealing, business. The māraka sits in the lagna of that house, and from the native's side the 8th lord is there — trouble in dealing with others.
• The malefic clause: with a malefic there the result is sure. Without one it is only an indication and the native may get past it.
• It need not be both marriage and business. One may happen, and in some cases neither. Check daśāṁśa for business and navāṁśa for marriage.

8th Lord in 8th House

Verse result: long life (medium if the planet has no strength); thief (caura); blameworthy (nindya); one who blames others (anya-nindaka)

Explanation:

• Long life: the 8th is the house of longevity and its lord occupies it. Whether the planet is Saturn or Jupiter does not matter — it is a planet in its own house, so longevity is strong.
• Even if the planet has no strength at all, Parāśara says medium life, not short. So this placement is good for longevity — "not for other things".
• Caveat: if the 8th lord is with the 7th lord or 2nd lord and they are stronger, or there are afflictions, the same cannot be said.
• Thief: the 7th is other people; the 8th, 2nd from the 7th, is other people's money. That is why the 8th gives money without effort — lottery, inheritance. With its lord strong in it, the native puts other people's resources to his own use.
• Blameworthy: character and dharma are seen from the 9th. The 8th is the 12th from the 9th — loss of dharma. With that house strong, the native gives up or compromises his dharma. (The 12th is also giving, so it can instead show one who sacrifices for dharma; that is the other possibility.)
• Blames others: from the 7th house of interaction, this planet is the 2nd lord in the 2nd — a strong māraka for relations. It is hard for this person to keep good relations; others blame him and he fights with them.
• The 8th is also the seat of anger in the horoscope. Anger plus poor relations = fighting with people.

8th Lord in 9th House

Verse result: betrays dharma (dharma-drohī); no belief in God (nāstika); husband of a wicked wife (duṣṭa-bhāryā-pati); takes away other people's wealth (para-dravya-apahāraka)

Explanation:

• Dharma-drohī: seen from the 9th, the lord of the house that breaks it is sitting in it. "The one who is supposed to demolish the house — you tell him to construct the house; very unlikely that he will construct it."
• Nāstika: belief in God comes from the 9th. So the native can be not just irreligious and adharmic but an atheist.
• "Wicked" wife — the teacher calls this one "the googly":
  • Duṣṭa is a generic word; its meaning depends on context.
  • From the 7th house, this planet is the wife's 2nd lord in her 3rd house. The 2nd is speech; the 3rd is boldness, bravery, initiative, one of the houses of aggression.
  • So her speech is harsh and aggressive; she asserts — "do this, do this". She talks a lot, boldly, with pride.
  • He quotes a proverb: literally, if your mouth is bad the whole village is bad. Its meaning: if you have no control over your tongue, the whole town takes you for a bad person.

"So he may not be talking about an evil person, but he may be talking about a harsh person."

• Takes others' money: the 8th is other people's money. Its lord is in the 2nd from it — a māraka place for that money. Put another way, the 9th is the 3rd from the 7th: the 2nd from the 7th accumulates other people's money, and the 2nd from that breaks the accumulation.
• For the native this same house is the 9th, fortune. Other people's money is diverted to build his fortune — "taking away other people's money and building a big palace with it".
