Kurma Chakra — Dynamic Mapping for Natural Disasters

The question

A student had read that the south-east (Āgneya) corner of the world would suffer in 2012 and asked whether astrology supports it. PVNR: he knows no reason for it. There are disasters somewhere every year. He takes "this year Āgneya will be bad" or "Nairṛti will be bad" with a pinch of salt.

The classical Kurma Chakra

• Given in the Rudrayāmala and other old texts. Imagine a giant turtle (kūrma) enveloping the earth: head in the east, legs in the south-east and north-east and so on, tail in the west, the body at the centre.
• The land is divided into 9 parts: the 8 directions and the centre.
• People read it statically: a fixed set of stars always shows the east, the next set the south-east, and so on. Saturn transiting a "southern" star then means trouble in southern India.
• Two problems. The fixed mapping was made by people looking only at India, and it gives no way to judge the US, Kenya or France. And the static mapping did not make sense to him when tested.

PVNR's dynamic mapping

This is his own research, published as an article on his Yahoo group. It is not a classical view.

• Cast the Lunar New Year chart (the standard Chaitra chart). It may hold for the monthly new-moon chart too.
• Cast it for the geographical centre of the unit, not the capital. The unit can be a city, a state, a country or the whole world.
  • India: Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, close to Ujjain. Ujjain may have been the centre in the old days.
  • The whole world: Mount Meru in Kenya, near the equator. This idea came from another researcher; PVNR did not accept it until he tested it.
• Lagna shows the east. Take the star containing the lagna of that chart as the start of the east and assign the stars to the directions from there, 3 stars to each portion.
• He divides each portion again in three: nearest the centre, middle, furthest. Any area is thus cut into 27 parts, one per star.
• Take the Sarvatobhadra Chakra of the same chart. Stars that receive vedha from malefics and from planets badly placed in the chart point to the regions in danger.
• To conclude it is an earthquake he used the higher divisions of the chart: D-30, D-40 and D-60.

"D40, D60, etc., are very risky to use in natal charts because we don't know if the time is accurate enough. But in the case of mundane charts, assuming that our planetary model is correct, you can be sure of the D40 and D60 lagnas."

How it was tested

• He tried about 10 mundane charts: solar new year from Aries, from Capricorn, lunar new year from full moon and from new moon, the Sun's Ārdrā praveśa, and others. Only the Chaitra Lunar New Year chart showed the correlations.
• He did not try the Indian independence chart.
• About 10 examples (Japan, Turkey, the US and others): earthquakes and tsunamis, natural disasters in general. The technique pointed to the area where the disaster happened. He calls the correlation statistically significant.

Sudarshana Chakra Dasha — Method and Rules of Judgment

Why this dasha

"Parasara said Sudarshana Chakra Dasha, especially when combined with Ashtakavarga, is basically the best technique for making predictions in Kali Yuga — daily, monthly, and annual predictions."

This is the Sudarshana Chakra used as a dasha, not only as a way to read Vimshottari from three lagnas. In PVNR's experience too it is the technique to rely on.

Calculation

• Three references: lagna, Moon, Sun — the tripod of life, showing the physical body, the subtle body and the causal body.
• Work in the chart of interest: rāśi, or the divisional chart of the matter (D-10 for career).
• Each reference progresses one sign a year. First year of life: the signs holding lagna, Moon and Sun. Second year: the 2nd from each. And so on.
• The signs repeat every 12 years. The results do not, because the dasha is not judged from the natal chart.
• Parāśara says to judge it varṣādau, māsādau: from the planetary positions when the year or the month begins. So cast the Dasha Pravesha Chakra (entry chart) for the start of the year and read that chart from the three progressed signs.
• Jagannatha Hora computes the dasha and the entry charts.

What makes a sign strong

1. The sign contains its own lord.
2. The sign is aspected by its own lord.
3. The sign contains an exalted planet, or is aspected by one.
4. The lord of the sign is exalted.
5. A rājayoga of kendra and koṇa lords (counted from the progressed lagna) sits in the sign.

What weakens it:

• Parāśara: a sign occupied by Rahu becomes weak, the house is destroyed. PVNR: take this with a pinch of salt. It depends how bad Rahu is in that chart and who is with him — Mars–Rahu is not Saturn–Rahu. Jupiter with Rahu (Guru-Chāṇḍāla) and Moon with Rahu (Chandra-Chāṇḍāla) are bad.

Ashtakavarga is left out. Parāśara says the dasha is unbeatable when joined with it, but PVNR has only partly worked out how, and does not teach what he finds unreliable.

Reading the three references together

• There are 9 planets and 12 houses from each of 3 references. Look for what is common.
• Example: from lagna the 5th contains the 5th lord, from Moon the 5th is aspected by its lord, from Sun the 5th has an exalted planet. Then the 5th is strong that year.
• The house that becomes strong gives its results, good house or bad house.
• At first he says the house must be strong from all three. Working the examples he settles on this:

"If something important is happening, there has to be a corresponding indication in 2 of the 3 references, 2 or all the 3 references."

• Houses as he uses them in the D-10: lagna strong = a career-oriented, good year. 5th = power, following, popularity, fame. 8th = setback, ups and downs, tension, struggle. 9th = fortune, blessings, things that come easily. 10th = the work you do and the effort you put in — not popularity.
• The technique works 80–90% of the time. It does not give crystal-clear "this will happen, this will not" readings.
• Caution: the D-10 lagna of the entry chart may be on a border even when the natal D-10 lagna is not. Then the reading cannot be relied on.
