Devata Framework — Clarification

The Three Devatas

A student recited the three definitions in class and PVNR repeated them: "Some basic things are worth stressing several times."

5th in Vimshamsha (D20) — Natural Attraction

A student recalled an earlier discussion about seeing the Ishta Devata from D20. PVNR corrected it:

• The Ishta Devata is the 12th from Atmakaraka in navamsha, the one who gives moksha.
• The 5th from lagna in Vimshamsha is the deity you feel a natural attraction towards. It does not show which deity is appropriate for you. Navamsha shows that.

Application to the Baby's Chart

All of this is read in navamsha. Atmakaraka Mars and Amatyakaraka Moon are both in Pisces there, with Venus.

The class's first suggestion: Lakshmi Narasimha, from Scorpio and from Moon and Mars being the problem planets. PVNR: "Very good." For a small child, a picture in her bedroom.

Palana Devata: 6th from Amatyakaraka Moon is Leo. It is empty. Its lord Sun is with Mercury. That could be Shiva, or, Sun with Mercury, Rama.

Dharma Devata: 9th from Atmakaraka Mars is Scorpio. Jupiter and Ketu are in it and could be taken. For the lord: when one co-lord occupies the sign the other is taken as lord, so with Ketu in Scorpio the lord is Mars. Mars can show Kartikeya, Hanuman or Narasimha. He is with Moon and Venus, a female influence. So Lakshmi Narasimha.

"If we take Lakshmi Narasimha, we are covering many bases."

Why Dharma Devata and not Ishta Devata:

"If you want overall blessings when life is in shambles, Dharma Devata is the best Devata to get a hold on. If you pray to Ishta Devata, Ishta Devata will cut off all the bonds one after the other. But right now you want the Dharma Karma Adhipati Yoga in the chart to function, the person to do her dharma."

• If health is bad she cannot do her dharma. Moksha comes later.
• The Dharma Devata is not only for health. Anything that blocks you from doing your dharma in the world, the Dharma Devata comes to the rescue.

If the family is not Hindu: do not force Hindu deities on them; be creative and find something else. If they are Hindu but do not know Lakshmi Narasimha, tell them about him.

Gandanta Shanti Recommendation

Why

Moon is in Gandanta, Mars is in Gandanta, and Saturn is on the other side of the same junction as Moon, about to go back into Moon's sign. Mars dasha is running. "It is a very, very critical case."

The Antardasha

• Running: Mars–Rahu. PVNR was relieved it was not Mars–Moon or Mars–Saturn, which would hammer the Gandanta effect twice.
• A student objected that Saturn is in the 9th house. PVNR: Saturn has argala on the 8th house and graha drishti on the 6th, he is karaka for both, he causes disease, and he is in the deepest Gandanta, retrograde.
• The student also noted that the bhoga of Mars–Rahu falls in the 6th. PVNR agreed that is not great, but still preferred Mars–Rahu.

"Right now Saturn is very, very disturbed. He is on the edge, literally and figuratively. You should be very careful with Saturn right now if you have any Saturnine problems in your chart."

What to Do

• Gandanta Shanti by the given procedure. Failing that, a Navagraha Homa with the Mrityunjaya Mantra, and if they can, the Ayush Sukta combined into it rather than a separate Ayush Homa. They can have a temple priest do it.
• The grahas and the Mrityunjaya Mantra in the fire are what matter most. An idol for the nakshatra lord is not essential. With three planets on junctions one may keep all three (the deities of Ashlesha, Magha and Jyeshtha). If only one, choose Mars, since his dasha is running, and use the mantra of Jyeshtha.
• Rather than load the parents with many things: tell them to pray to Lakshmi Narasimha. The Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba Stotra of Shankaracharya, or just its refrain "Lakshmi Narasimha mama dehi karavalambam" ("O Lakshmi Narasimha, give me your hand"). It is part of a shloka, not a mantra. Or give them a Lakshmi Narasimha mantra.

How to Tell the Parents

• First tell them what a child she is. "And we are not lying." She is born to do great deeds. Then mention the health caution and the remedy. "You should not scare them because they just got a child."
• Say plainly that the Ayush Sukta is not being suggested because longevity is short.

"The person will live long and do great things, but the beginning is perilous. That is why we are suggesting."

"Sometimes parents get overly concerned. They may not say it to you, but it will be eating their brain."

Timing — the 21st Day

• The 21st day is the recommended day. If it is a bad day (an eclipse, a bad tithi) do it on a nearby day.
• 21st day here: Saturday, January 27, 2007. Shukla Dashami for most of the day (71% of the tithi left at 10 AM), Krittika nakshatra.
• Shukla Dashami is a very auspicious tithi. Saturday is not that bad. Krittika is an Agni nakshatra, not a terrible one. A weekend, so convenient.
• Tara: a student counted from the baby's nakshatra Ashlesha to Krittika and got Kshema Tara. PVNR first disagreed, having taken Krittika as ruled by Mars, then conceded: Krittika is ruled by Sun and it is Kshema Tara. "Kshema is basically well-being. Maybe that is why they said 21st day."
• Caution on the shortcut: the 21st day usually lands on the same tara, but depending on how much of the nakshatra is left it can be off by one, so check.
• Make sure a priest is available. If that day is not possible, pick another good day, preferably within the next month. The bad dasha is already running, so do not wait.

Parents from the Baby's Chart — Dvadashamsha

Telling parents what the child will do at 50 "will feel like eternity". Something about the next year is of more use to them. So: what is the immediate effect of this child on the parents? Look at the running dasha in the Dvadashamsha (D12).

Father — from L9

Take the arudha of the 9th lord, L9. It is in Gemini. Read the dasha lords from Gemini as lagna.

Mars dasha: Mars is the 6th lord from Gemini, in the 5th from it. Dhimanta yoga. Some success for the father, some overcoming of obstacles. The child is lucky for the father.

Mars–Jupiter antardasha (from October 2007, for somewhat over a year):

• Jupiter is the 10th lord from Gemini. He is in the 12th from it, but with the 2nd lord Moon, who is exalted.
• Moon and Jupiter together give Gajakesari yoga.
• "Jupiter antardasha is particularly good for career."

"The child basically within a few years from birth will bring some luck to father, father in career."

Father or Mother — Who Guides Her More?

Compare the 9th and 4th houses of D12 (Virgo lagna).

• 9th house (Taurus): Moon and Jupiter, the 11th and 7th lords, are in it. Two benefics. Its lord Venus is in the 12th from it, but the 12th is not bad for Venus. The 9th is the stronger house. More guidance comes from the father.
• 4th house (Sagittarius): its lord Jupiter is in the 6th from it, joined by Moon, who is the 8th lord counted from Sagittarius. Rahu is in the house itself, and Rahu is the worst enemy of both the lord Jupiter and the karaka Moon. The 4th is afflicted.

"Motherly happiness, there is some problem. There is some tension with mother." While she is a baby the mother looks after her. "When she becomes older, the real nature will come out." She is not as drawn to the mother as to the father.

Mother — from L4

From L4 as lagna, Mars is in the 4th house. Not a happy placement, but he is the yogakaraka from there, and as 10th lord he aspects the 10th, his own sign. If the mother works, Mars dasha gives her a good position in career.

Overall: the child brings good luck to both parents. The mother's career benefits in Mars dasha now; the father's career gains more later, in Jupiter antardasha.
