Son's Career Chart (1992) — D24 Mars+Sun in 9th (Surgery/Mechanical/Chemical), D10 Venus Exalted in 10th (Luxury Sector) & Rahu AMK = Research

A father asks which field his teenage son should choose for college; the son is sure only that it is not engineering. The teacher calls it short-sighted to pick a degree from D24 alone and finds the career in D10 first. In D10 (Gemini lagna) exalted Venus in the 10th contends with Mars in his own sign in the 6th. Because the 10th lord Jupiter is debilitated in the 8th and A10 falls in the 6th, Mars is judged the primary career and Venus–Jupiter a secondary one that may bring fame. Mars means making things — mechanical, chemical, civil, automobile, hardware — or surgery; not software or abstract engineering. Venus, Moon, Sun and Rahu add medicine with research. D24 confirms it: Mars and Sun in the 9th house of the bachelor's degree. The advice is medicine if he will take it, otherwise mechanical, chemical or automobile engineering, with Venus pointing to luxury cars later.

Key principle

The 9th house of bachelor's education has Mars and Sun. Mars-Sun combination is very strong for surgery, for medicine. Mars can also show mechanical engineering and chemical engineering — technology-based engineering and physical engineering, not abstract engineering like computers.

Rāśi chart: Aquarius lagna; the 10th is Scorpio and its lord Mars is in his own sign Aries in the 3rd. Amātyakāraka is Rahu. D10 (Gemini lagna): lagna lord Mercury exalted in the 4th (Virgo), where AL also falls; Venus, 5th lord, exalted in the 10th (Pisces); 10th lord Jupiter debilitated in the 8th (Capricorn) with Sun; Mars in own sign in the 6th (Scorpio), where A10 falls; Moon and Rahu in the 9th (Aquarius) with A6. D24 (Gemini lagna): Sun and Mars in the 9th (Aquarius).

Chart Analysis — A Teenager's Career (D10 and D24)

The Question

  • A student brings his son's chart. The boy has two more years of school and must then choose a field for college.
  • The father thinks engineering fits. The son does not know what he wants, but he is sure it is not engineering — his father is an engineer and he has seen what the work is.
  • The teacher refuses to start from D24:

"To see what would be the right field for bachelor's education would be a short-sighted step. What would be more interesting is to see what would be the right career for him… If he is not going to have a career in that, what's the point? So instead of looking at D24, let us look at D10."

  • D10 lagna (Gemini) holds for 3.5 minutes on one side and 6.5 on the other. The father was present at the birth, so the error is a minute or two. The chart is taken as accurate.

D10 — Which Planet Leads the Career

Career is seen from the 2nd, 6th and 10th houses, and from the Amātyakāraka. The Amātyakāraka is Rahu.

D10 placementReading
Lagna lord Mercury exalted in the 4th (Virgo)A smart person in his career
Arudha Lagna with MercuryThe world sees him as smart — "his image is that of a smartie"
Venus, 5th lord, exalted in the 10th (Pisces)The 10th house is strong
10th lord Jupiter debilitated in the 8th (Capricorn), with SunThe 10th lord is weak
Mars in his own sign in the 6th (Scorpio)The 6th house of service is very strong, and Martian
A10 in the 6thThe tangible career falls in the 6th and strengthens it further
  • There is a tussle between Venus (10th) and Mars (6th).
  • The teacher's judgment: the primary career is Mars. Jupiter and Venus may show a parallel, secondary career — one that may make him well known, because Venus is the 5th lord of fame.
  • The rāśi chart agrees: the 10th house is Scorpio, owned by Mars, and Mars is in his own sign in the 3rd house of initiative. A very bold person.

What Mars Shows

  • Engineering — but not the father's kind. Not software, not logic. Making things: chemicals, civil engineering, automobiles. Mechanical engineering is a strong possibility.
  • Surgery. "Mars can show a surgeon, especially in Scorpio."

Medicine in the D10:

  • Venus and Moon are the planets of curing. Mars is the planet of cutting. Sun is named with them as the other planet for this field (his exact word is lost in the recording).
  • The 10th house has Venus. The 10th lord Jupiter is with Sun. A6 is with Moon and Rahu.
  • Rahu adds research — something cutting-edge.
  • "Medicine is something he can take very seriously."

The two possibilities from D10: surgery/medicine, and mechanical engineering.

D24 — The Bachelor's Degree

  • D24 lagna (Gemini) has more than a minute and a half of leeway in both directions (1m42s on one side). Taken as reliable.
  • The 9th house of bachelor's education holds Mars and Sun (Aquarius).
  • The Mars–Sun combination is very strong for surgery and medicine.
  • Mars also shows mechanical and chemical engineering.

"It is either engineering — but not mathematics-based engineering — technology-based engineering and physical engineering, not abstract object-oriented engineering. Not abstract engineering like computers. Could even be hardware. Mars can also show computer hardware, electronics."

  • Rahu's influence is there in the D10 too: some research effort is possible.

The Advice

  • Medicine, if he is interested — a good area for him.
  • Otherwise mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, that kind of engineering.
  • Automobile engineering is "clearly Mars only". If he goes into it he will not waste his life; it may be his career.
  • Then Venus in the 10th of D10 has its place: Venus is the planet of consumer and luxury products.

"Doing some automobile research and doing some luxury cars later on may be shown by Venus. So that is a tangible line for him."

  • He has two more years "to fall in love with something else".

Rules From This Chart

PointRule
Field of studyFind the career in D10 first; then choose the bachelor's and master's that lead to it. D24 alone is short-sighted.
Career houses in D102nd, 6th, 10th, and the Amātyakāraka. Weigh house against lord: a strong 10th house with a debilitated 10th lord can lose to a 6th that is owned and occupied by its lord.
A10Where A10 falls, that house gains weight as the tangible career.
MarsMaking things — mechanical, chemical, civil, automobile, hardware and electronics — and surgery. Not software, not abstract or mathematics-based engineering.
MedicineVenus and Moon cure, Mars cuts; Sun joins them. Rahu adds research.
Mars + Sun in the 9th of D24Surgery or medicine; otherwise physical, technology-based engineering.
VenusManagement; also consumer and luxury products.
