The Case — First Job After a Master's in the US

What is known

• The native is a student's younger brother.
• B.Tech in electronics. MS in the US in computer science and electronics.
• Came to the US on December 31, 2007.
• He is looking for his first job. The question is purely about career: what should he do next.

How the houses are counted in this class

The teacher reads houses by divisional longitude, from the lagna degree. In D-4, D-10 and D-24 this lagna falls at the very end of a sign, so:

"It is at the end of Leo. So all planets will actually be in the 12th house compared to how they are seen."

Every planet sits one house earlier than a plain sign count shows. The site's charts count houses by sign, so read them one house back: Saturn and Mercury of D-4 show in the 8th sign but are in the 7th house; Jupiter and Ketu of D-10 show in the 8th sign but are in the 7th house; Mars and Mercury of D-24 show in the 10th sign but are in the 9th house.

The class uses a node longitude about 1½° later than the site's. In the class D-10 Ketu is at 3°36′ Pisces with Jupiter; the site shows Ketu in Aquarius. In the class D-24 Rahu and Ketu are in the 1st house by longitude; the site shows them at the start of Cancer.

Rectification — Cancer or Libra D-4 Lagna

The problem

• Lagna is 14°56′. Add 11 seconds to the birth time and it crosses 15°.
• At 15° the D-10 lagna changes. So do D-4 and D-24.
• All even divisional charts change sign at 15°: a D-2n chart puts n parts in the first 15° and n parts in the second, so 15° is a hard border for every one of them.
• That is good news. The date of going abroad tests the D-4 lagna, and whichever D-4 lagna is right fixes the D-10 lagna too.

"That can be used to see which D4 lagna makes sense, and that will basically tell us which D10 lagna is correct."

• The two possibilities in D-4: Cancer (time as given) or Libra (11 seconds later).

The test: coming to the US on December 31, 2007

Vimśottarī then: Jupiter mahādaśā, Saturn antardaśā, Mercury pratyantardaśā. The houses of foreign residence are the 7th, 9th and 12th.

Cancer lagna (at the end of Cancer)

• Jupiter is the 9th lord — foreign residence, fortune from a foreign country. He is in Cancer, but the lagna is at the end of Cancer, so he is in the 12th house. 9th lord in the 12th is the classical combination for going abroad.
• He came within a couple of years of Jupiter daśā starting, in its second antardaśā. He is likely to live abroad for most of Jupiter daśā; going back to live in India during it is very unlikely.
• Saturn is the 7th lord in the 7th house (1° Aquarius).
• Mercury is the 12th lord — leaving the motherland — in the 7th house of long journeys (19° Aquarius), together with Saturn.
• 9th lord in the 12th, 12th lord in the 7th, 7th lord in the 7th. Daśā, antardaśā and pratyantardaśā lords all tie to the 7th, 9th and 12th.

Libra lagna (at the beginning of Libra)

• Saturn is the 4th and 5th lord in the 5th. No link to foreign residence.
• Mercury does have a link: he is the 9th and 12th lord. But he is in the 5th, and the 5th does not show going abroad — it shows staying in the same country.
• Saturn is Mercury's dispositor and could give Mercury's result if he were close to him. He is far from Mercury in the sign; there is no yoga between them.
• Jupiter is the 3rd and 6th lord in the 10th. Nothing about going abroad.
• So the daśā lord and the antardaśā lord do not show it. Only the pratyantardaśā lord could explain it, and from a house that does not help.

Verdict

"In one case you have a clean explanation, in the other case extremely vague justification that you have to give."

• The given time is right. It could be earlier by a minute or two, but it is not later by more than 11 seconds.
• The D-10 lagna stays where it is: Leo.

D-24 — Bachelor's and Master's Education

D-24 also changes at the 11-second mark, so it is a second check. The aim is not to find which lagna fits best. Libra in D-4 is already rejected; the aim is only to see that the Cancer D-24 lagna explains the education reasonably, without forcing.

Bachelor's degree — the 9th house

• D-24 lagna is 28° Cancer.
• The 9th sign is Pisces. Jupiter owns it and aspects it (graha dṛṣṭi, his 7th from Virgo). Saturn also aspects it. Jupiter and Saturn do not explain electronics.
• A student points out the answer: by longitude Mars (13° Aries) and Mercury (24° Aries) are both in the 9th house, because the lagna is at 28°.
• Mars is in his own sign and mūlatrikoṇa. A planet in mūlatrikoṇa in the 9th dominates it.
• Mars shows engineering, electronic engineering in particular — Mars, Rahu and Ketu are the kārakas. Mercury with him shows computers, logic, mathematics.

"The moral is, apart from the aspect, see the planets who are in the house also, apart from the lord and aspectors."

Master's degree — the 2nd house and A2

• Master's is seen from the 2nd house.
• Jupiter, the 9th lord, is in the 2nd house (Virgo by sign, 2nd by longitude). So Jupiter can give the bachelor's degree and the master's degree, and the education coming in Jupiter daśā makes sense.
• Rahu and Ketu are not in the 2nd house; they are in the 1st.
• For the tangible subject of the master's, look at A2. A2 is at 27° Virgo. Its lord is Mercury — computer science.
• Aspects on A2 as read from the software: Sun 43%, Mars 45%, Mercury 11%, Venus 24%, Saturn 33%, Rahu 100%. Rahu dominates, and Rahu shows electronics.
• Mercury and Rahu together: a master's in computer science with electronics.

Continuity

• Across the 9th house, the 2nd house, A9 and A2, Mercury has influence on both levels. He is the connection.
• When there is such a connection the master's is related to the bachelor's. The person did not switch fields.
• The Siddhāṁśa explains things reasonably well. The lagna is accepted.

D-10 — Long-Term Career Direction

D-10 lagna is at the end of Leo.

The strong houses

• The 10th lord Venus is in the 11th house.
• Lagna lord Sun and Mercury, lord of the 2nd and 11th (money and gains), are together in the 3rd house. The 3rd is one strong house.
• The 7th house holds Jupiter (5th lord) and Ketu (4th lord). The 6th and 7th are owned by the same planet, but the 7th is occupied and by a Rāja Yoga of the 4th and 5th lords. The 7th is stronger than the 6th.
• The lagna lord is in the 3rd — a kāma trikoṇa, the house of initiative and of temporary service.

What it means

"This is not an advice for the first job, but in the long run, this is somebody who will be contracting, who will not be in a permanent service, who will not be working for somebody forever."

• He should build his career so that he collects the cross-section of skills an independent contractor needs, and keep that at the back of his mind from the start.

Jupiter daśā

• Jupiter is the 5th lord in his own sign Pisces, a trine lord in a quadrant, in Rāja Yoga with Ketu.
• Jupiter is at 4°25′ Pisces and Ketu at 3°36′ Pisces in D-10 — less than a degree apart. Ketu is also strong in Pisces. Two strong planets give a Rāja Yoga in the 7th house of business, and that daśā is running.
• There is a very good chance that within Jupiter daśā he starts his own business.
• Jupiter–Ketu antardaśā will trigger the Rāja Yoga. 2012 will be a good year for his career.

Timing the First Job — Daśā and Tithi Praveśa

The first job comes from the 5th house

• The first break is the result of pūrva-puṇya. Many people have studied the same subject; for you to get the job somebody has to trust you.
• Later it is different: few people specialise in a field, and a vacancy in that field comes to you.
• So the 5th house matters most for the first job. Next the lagna — the 1st house is the very beginning.
• Jupiter is the 5th lord. The mahādaśā is conducive.

Mercury antardaśā

• Mercury is not connected to the 5th house, but he is with the lagna lord Sun. He is capable of giving the job.
• He is not a strong candidate, only a possible one.
• From the daśā lord Jupiter, Mercury is in the 8th house (by longitude), in Scorpio. The 8th is the house of tension and Scorpio is an evil sign: worry about career during this antardaśā — no job yet, will I find one.
• From Jupiter he owns the 4th and 7th. He is a kendra lord, not a dusthāna lord — an average planet, not a bad one.
• Mercury is effective in the signs of Mars for material purposes. In the 8th, whatever good he gives comes suddenly.

Venus pratyantardaśā (running at the time of the class)

• Venus is the 10th lord. A 10th lord can give a job.
• Link with the 5th house: from the 11th house he has about 60% aspect on the 5th.
• A5 in D-10 is at 0° Gemini. Venus is not in A5; Venus and the Moon are together in the 2nd from A5. Planets in the 1st and 2nd from an ārūḍha make it flourish, more so benefics. Venus–Moon in the 2nd from Ārūḍha Lagna makes one very rich; here it blesses A5, the tangible recognition of one's abilities.
• From the antardaśā lord Mercury, Venus is the 7th lord in the 9th house with the 9th lord (the Moon). That is a Rāja Yoga.
• So there is a chance in Venus pratyantardaśā.

Sun pratyantardaśā — the strong candidate

• From Mercury, the Sun is the 10th lord in lagna: starting a career.
• From the lagna he is the lagna lord: a new beginning.
• It starts on September 5 and runs to October 17.

"Overall it seems, based on the daśā, that before October 17th there should be a job for him."

• The antardaśā is only average. The mahādaśā is very good and good pratyantardaśās are running, so the chance is good.

Confirmation from the Tithi Praveśa year

• In the Tithi Praveśa chart of the year the Hora Lord is Saturn.
• Venus is the 5th lord (recognition) and the 10th lord (career). He is in the 9th house in mūlatrikoṇa — a very strong planet.
• Before trusting that, check how close the TP lagna is to a border: if the lagna changes, a yogakāraka can become a functional malefic. Here it changes 2 minutes 52 seconds forward — and the birth time is known not to be more than 11 seconds late — or 6 minutes 35 seconds backward. The lagna is safe.
• Venus's period of the TP year runs July 11 to September 24. That is the best window.
• If he misses it: the Sun's period is not good — he is the 8th lord, showing hard work — and the Moon's is not great either.

"Until September 24th is the best opportunity. So he should put his best foot forward, send his resume to as many places as possible."

• The two systems meet in September: the Vimśottarī Sun pratyantardaśā begins on September 5, and around September 10 to 24, at the end of the TP Venus period, both are running. "Especially the month of September looks very, very good."
• This holds even though times are very hard for new graduates.

Remedy — Āditya Hṛdayam

A student notes that the Amātyakāraka is Jupiter. The teacher builds the remedy from there.

• In D-10 the 6th from Amātyakāraka Jupiter is Leo. Its lord is the Sun.
• The Sun is also the lagna lord of D-10, so his influence is lifelong.
• The Sun is with Mercury, the antardaśā lord, so he has influence on the running antardaśā.
• The Sun's own pratyantardaśā is the one coming in September.
• In the rāśi chart the Sun is the 5th lord of pūrva-puṇya.
• So the Sun is the key planet to propitiate. Pray to the Sun or to Śiva.
• It is said in class that Rahu and Saturn also fall in the 6th from Amātyakāraka. The site's D-10 shows Rahu in Leo and Saturn in Virgo.

The prescription

• Read Āditya Hṛdayam three times every day for about 60 days. Once takes a few minutes. Text and audio are easy to find.
• In the morning, around sunrise, if possible.
