Example Chart — Lottery Winner ($200,000 House)

The Event

• The native lives in the USA. He walked into an open house for a new development. A lottery was being drawn for a $200,000 concession on the price.
• He won. The one condition: he cannot sell the house for five years.
• "It is worth it to wait because he needs a house anyway. That is why he presumably went to an open house."
• Time: second half of 2005. The exact month is not known in class (some time from July to November).

Which Daśā Applies

The teacher runs through the conditional daśās before using Vimshottari.

• Lagna vargottama? No — rāśi lagna Leo, navamsa lagna Gemini. Shatabdika daśā does not apply.
• Lagna lord in the 7th, or 7th lord in lagna? Sun is in the 6th; the 7th lords Saturn and Rahu are not in lagna. Dwisaptati sama daśā does not apply.
  • A student offers Rahu, a 7th lord, in the 7th. The teacher: 7th lord in the 7th is not the condition. "Had Rahu been in Leo, a special daśā would have applied."
• 10th lord in the 10th? No. Chaturashiti sama daśā does not apply.
• Sun in lagna? No. Shashtihayani daśā does not apply.
• So use Vimshottari from the Moon.

Which Chart

• Fortune with a house you own or live in is seen in D4. "D4 is the chart of residence and any real estate that you own or occupy."
• Before looking at any daśā, judge the D4 itself: does it show luck with property or not?
• The D4 lagna is not on a border: it changes 5 minutes 37 seconds earlier or 26 minutes 11 seconds later. If the recorded time is good to five minutes, the lagna stands.

D4 (Chaturthamsa) Chart Analysis

D4 lagna Scorpio. Sun, Venus and Saturn in Cancer (9th). Moon and Rahu in Leo (10th). Mars in Gemini (8th). Mercury exalted in Virgo (11th). Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn (3rd). Ketu in Aquarius (4th).

Lagna Lord in the 8th

• Mars as Mars in the 8th is not good: sudden setbacks, sudden changes.
• The lagna lord in the 8th is good, whoever he is.

"Mars in the 8th is not good. But lagna lord being in the 8th is good, whether it is Mars or Mercury or Jupiter or whoever it is."

• The 8th house is sudden change — a sudden rise or a sudden fall. Which one depends on the planet's agenda.
• The lagna lord's agenda is always to set you up in the matters of that divisional chart: good work in D10, good education in D24, fortune with residence and property in D4.
• Here the lagna lord is also Mars, the planet of property.
• So: a very good price when buying or selling, or land bought in some far-off place that suddenly becomes valuable because of something the government does.
• Mars also owns the 6th (Aries). The 6th lord in the 8th is a viparita raja yoga.
• The other lord of Scorpio, Ketu, is in the 4th: "nothing good, nothing bad", in a friendly sign.

The 5th and 9th — Houses of Fortune

• The 9th is the primary house of fortune. The 5th is purva punya, the fortune carried from past lives.
• The 5th lord Jupiter is very weak: debilitated and in the 3rd, his marana karaka sthana.
• The relief: Jupiter is in the Arudha Lagna (Capricorn) and aspects the 9th house by graha dṛṣṭi.
  • Lagna is the self with respect to property. Arudha Lagna is that self as the world sees it. "If he suddenly got lucky and people know it … that is Arudha Lagna."
• In the 9th: Venus (7th lord), Saturn (4th lord), Sun (10th lord). Apart from the lagna, all three other quadrant lords are in Cancer. "Cancer is a very crucial sign in this chart."

Raja Yoga 1 — Quadrant Lords with a Trine Lord

• Quadrant lords together are not a yoga. Quadrant lords show effort; trine lords show luck.
• Quadrant lords are Vishnu, trine lords are Lakshmi. "Unless Vishnu and Lakshmi are together, there is no yoga."
• Jupiter (5th lord) in Capricorn and the three quadrant lords in Cancer aspect each other. That mutual aspect is the raja yoga.

Raja Yoga 2 — Dharma-Karma Exchange

• Moon is in the Sun's sign (Leo, 10th) and Sun is in the Moon's sign (Cancer, 9th). The 9th lord and the 10th lord exchange places.
• In the chart of property, dharma is not charity. "Dharma is he acquires more properties." The yoga means luck in what this chart shows.

Moon with Rahu — Badhakesha with Rahu

• The 9th lord Moon is afflicted by Rahu in Leo. Rahu is a lord of the 4th (Aquarius), the house of sukha. The two do not like each other, but it is still a yoga of the 4th and 9th lords.
• Moon's agenda is fortune. Rahu wants to give sukha, in his own way, and he makes Moon use that way.
• Rahu's way to fortune: deceit, or a foreign country. Rahu is the karaka of being abroad.
• Scorpio is a fixed sign, so the 9th lord Moon is also the badhakesha.

"If badhakesha is with Rahu, or the badhaka sthana is very strong — it has either Rahu or the 9th lord or the 12th lord or the 7th lord — then you can say that the person will live abroad."

• "It is not a great yoga, but it shows fortune away from motherland."
• In another chart the same yoga can show money in property through deceit: selling bad properties, cheating, occupying another's property illegally. Judge from rāśi and navamsa whether the person is dharmic, and from D10 what he does. Here the teacher takes it as fortune abroad.
• A student asks whether the yoga is bad. "It is not bad. It is a yoga. It is an uncomfortable yoga."

Sukha from the House

• For a malefic such as Saturn or Rahu, owning a quadrant is neutral. Give him the 3rd, 6th or 11th and he knows the job. Give him the 4th and he says: "Sukha, what is it? I know how to make him work hard. I know how to make him determined."
• Rahu knows how to give acquisitions, not inner happiness.
• Ketu in the 4th is not good for the 4th house.
• Redeeming factor: Moon, the karaka of mental happiness, aspects the 4th (graha dṛṣṭi from Leo to Aquarius).
• Conclusion: much fortune in property away from the motherland, but he will not enjoy the houses he owns or occupies very much, and will not spend much quality time in them.
• This says nothing of his happiness overall. That is seen from the rāśi chart and D16.

Narayana Dasha (ND) Timing in D4 — Full Analysis

Narayana daśā of D4 at the event: Capricorn, February 2004 to February 2010 (six years, twelve antardaśās of six months).

The Three-Part Rule

Divide the daśā into three parts: the sign itself, the lord of the sign, and the planets occupying and aspecting the sign.

1 — The sign chooses first.

• Capricorn is a pṛṣṭodaya (back-rising) sign. It gives its results at the end.
• Last four antardaśās, February 2008 – February 2010: results of Capricorn.

2 — The lord chooses next.

• Saturn is in Cancer, also a pṛṣṭodaya sign. He too wants to give as late as possible.
• The last third is taken, so he takes the middle: February 2006 – February 2008.

3 — Occupants and aspectors get what is left.

• First third, February 2004 – February 2006: Jupiter (in Capricorn), and Moon and Rahu (in Leo, aspecting Capricorn by rāśi dṛṣṭi).
• 24 months shared equally by three planets: 8 months each.
• Degrees: Moon 27°, Jupiter 12°, Rahu 20°. The order the teacher gives is Moon, Jupiter, Rahu. He does not spell the rule out here; the class notes state it as the order of decreasing longitude. (That gives Moon, Jupiter, Rahu only if Rahu is measured from the end of the sign: 30 − 20 = 10.)

Why Rahu

Moon, Jupiter and Rahu are all tied to the 9th house and its lord. The teacher asks what Rahu has that the others lack.

1. Rahu is with the 9th lord Moon and takes over Moon's function. "It is an uncomfortable relationship, but there is a yoga and Rahu dominates that yoga."
2. Rahu has argala on the 9th house (he is in the 2nd from Cancer).
3. Rahu is a lord of the 4th, the house of home.
4. Rahu has graha dṛṣṭi on two arudhas. The class reads the aspected signs off the software: Virgo (his "2nd house aspect"), Sagittarius, the 7th, and Aries. (The recording says "Capricorn" for the 7th; the 7th from Leo is Aquarius.)
   • A4 (Gṛha pada, Sagittarius) — the tangible house you live in.
   • A9 (Bhagya pada, Virgo) — the tangible manifestation of fortune.

A lottery win is not just fortune. People come to know of it and are in awe. That is a tangible event, so A9 matters. The other planets linked to the 9th house and its lord have no link to A9. (Moon is in A6.)

"What does graha dṛṣṭi mean? Desire to give. So Rahu is not only the 4th lord of house, but he has a desire to give a home to live in. He has a desire to give him fortune."

A7, A8 and A9 Together in Virgo

• A9 is in the 11th house with exalted Mercury — very strong.
• A8 is with A9. The 8th is suddenness, a sudden fall or a sudden rise. A8 is its tangible form.
• Here it turned to luck because an exalted planet is in that arudha, and the 8th house itself is strong with the lagna lord Mars in it.
• A7 is there as well. The 7th house is interaction as it goes on inside the mind; A7 is the part of it the world can see. A friend told him about it, he went to an open house, he dealt with people — and then something sudden happened.

Graha Dṛṣṭi and Rāśi Dṛṣṭi — the Project Analogy

A student notes that Rahu's friend Mercury owns and occupies Virgo. The teacher agrees and recalls his analogy:

• A house is a group handling a project. The house lord is the group manager. The occupants are the members. The karaka is the project manager.
• Planets with rāśi dṛṣṭi are people who have exposure and the skills needed, who have a chance of working on the project.
• Planets with graha dṛṣṭi are people who have a desire to work on it. They may or may not get to.
• Mercury is both the manager and the lone member of the Virgo group. When his friend Rahu says he would like to work on that project, Mercury says "come on board".

Summing up, Rahu is linked to all three: argala on the 9th house, yoga with the 9th lord, dṛṣṭi on A9.

The Rāśi Chart Agrees

• In the rāśi chart Rahu is in the 9th from Arudha Lagna, and he sits in A4 and A9 together — a yoga between Gṛha pada and Bhagya pada with Rahu in it.
• That same Rahu, in D4, aspects the daśā sign Capricorn and the Arudha Lagna.
